    Very nice, doing an aftermarket fender on a 2014 Chevy Traverse this weekend. Large crease dent in it, auto body quoted several thousand to fix it! Instead of that, I bought a brand new aftermarket fender for about $80.00 shipped, spent about $50 on sandpaper and materials. So for less than $150.00 going to have a brand new fender! Thanks man.

    Excellent production-quality preparation. I needed this for the process, but plan to pay extra attention to the rust-prone areas, like the inside bottom corners (rocker area) and behind the fender lip. I'm also taping so I can spray stone guard the lip that faces the tire, another spot for future rust.

    I don't know what the other posters are complaining about. I thought it was a very informative video. Basically sand and primer all new metal parts before painting. You're right they will rust eventually if you don't seal and prime them.

      This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "automotive painting equipment" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Banayce Wordless Blueprint - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to master car body work and spraying techniques minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my m8 got excellent results with it.

    nteresting and enjoyable video but leaves me with a couple of questions.
    why do you need to use primer when the panel is not bare metal ?
    shouldn't you wash down the panel with a wax and grease remover as well or at least some water to wash away any dust left from the sanding and scouring?
    ( also when you wash the panel after primer maybe wash underneath first and then the other side instead of the other way around where you wash the good side and then flip it over onto the ( dirty ) trestles. :-)

      The black primer used on new parts is only there to prevent part from rusting when in storage... simply wont last...
      And no real need to wipe it with wax and grease remover since the part is brand new and we usually blow off the dust with a blow gun or you could also use a tack cloth...

    I'm replacing the LH fender on my "93 (Yes, I said 1993) GMC Jimmy, that I've driven for 24 years. Note that he put some heavy cloth (towels or old blanket) on his horses so as not to scratch the paint. Protective gear? Shorts and T-shirt for me.
    Rather than paying for 1 quart of paint, hardener and reducer. I'll try a few rattle cans of paint, assuming I can match the correct white.
    Since the bottom areas are prone to collect dirt and moisture, I plan to coat these areas with used grease and tyranny fluid. One video said that tyranny fluid contains rust inhibiters. I've found that where oil and grease collect, there is no rust. May collect dirt. But it won't rust.

    Why paint over the Gravel Guard? It seems like it should go on last inside the fender to protect the paint? I'm a newbie just asking, not making a criticism. Thanks for taking the time o make these videos. cheers.

    • @HomeGrownPyro1
      @HomeGrownPyro1 3 года назад

      The clear coat or topcoat on a vehicle is the protection for the paint.
      The gravel guard is a textured rubberized coating, usually black in color, that is applied as an undercoating to protect the metal rather than the paint. It's an extra layer of protection to prevent the rock chips and scratches from getting all the way down to the bare metal because any exposed bare metal on a vehicle will rust.
      Hope this helps

    When sanding the primer layers, instead of the 500 grit (dry) sanding paper, can I do this with 600-800 grit WET sanding paper? The result seems far more smooth. Just curious. Thank you for taking the time to do this tutorial.

    • @TheMechanicDoctor

      It’s really that at this point, you don’t really need to be “far more smooth”… you could do it… it wont arm anything… simply not really needed at this point

    How do we treat the insides of e coated parts? Before gravel guard? Need to sand also? Oh okay for it. Use same technique.

    • @TheMechanicDoctor
      @TheMechanicDoctor  5 лет назад +1

      It really depends on the part you are working on and if the inside will be visible once installed on the car... for fenders, for example, we spray the inside with gravel guard first (4:40 in the video) and then with primer (6:49) and leave it like that since they'll be covered with plastic fender panels anyway.... same with quarter panels...
      The visible portions of inside doors, however, should be painted just like the exterior...

    • @MrCbell57
      @MrCbell57 5 лет назад

      @@TheMechanicDoctorDoctor okay great that helps. You mean the part of inside doors where the interior panels won't cover. Right? Not talking about painting the interior of the entire door. It is hard to sand when sanding inside these doors! Thanks again. Hopefully, you meant just the outer edges of the door, on the inside.

    • @TheMechanicDoctor
      @TheMechanicDoctor  5 лет назад +2

      It really depends but we do the inside of the door just like the outside minus the clear... so yeah we sand inside the door too lol... otherwise if you just leave it on the OEM primer, the door panel will start to rust from the inside eventually...
      Dont forget that when it rains, the interior panel of the door is full of water, thus why there’s small holes to let the water drip at the bottom of the door panel... so it depends on how long you expect the car to last 😉

    The fenders and hood I ordered already come primed, I know I need to scuff them for the basecoat, but why are you adding another primer sealer coat? If they come prime can I not just scuff wipe down and add a few coats of base, than a few coats of clear?

      What it has is a Ecoat… I Wet sanded with 600 or 800 lightly, then sprayed 2 coats of sealer before my base coats. You don’t need sealer, but with Ecoat parts it’s a better foundation for any color you put on top. I did get some orange peel in my clearcoat, will now sand the clear with 1500-3000, then rubbing compound and polish, and done

    I’ve asked about this in the Uk and was told no need to spray prima fila etc.
    One person also said if it’s a black car don’t worry about prima to..
    Go straight for the top coat..
    It’s confusing...

      There’s a big difference between painting a car and painting a car correctly so it looks and lasts as long as a factory finish...
      I would personally never spray paint without spraying a primer coat first... 🤷🏻‍♂️

      The Mechanic Doctor get rid of the soundtrack, inform everyone what type of surface you're prepping, Ex: urethane, gel coated, fiberglass, metal, etc. Discuss the difference and methods used to prep. How's that amigo, constructive enough? You have to be better then the other guys making the same video and assume the viewer has little to no experience. Cheers mate

      Wow, you really seem to know what you are talking about! Maybe you should make your owns videos on your free time too so I could tell you everything you are doing wrong instead of aknowledging what you are doing right... sorry bro, but we put a lot of work and time into this only to help people for absolutely nothing in return.... and yes it could be more detailled, but when we do, people complain about the video being too long, can’t please everybody I guess... ✌🏼
      P.s: if you don’t like the soundtrack, you do know you can turn off the volume right?

      The Mechanic Doctor ok, so my initial comment may have been harsh, but my second post was for your benefit. An expert is not going to watch your video, but someone looking on how to do a prep properly is. Nobody likes to have to read instructions, it is better as the expert to walk everyone through the process by you narrating your video. I'm telling you this as a viewer who is looking for this type of information as are many others. 18minutes is plenty without have to go to granular and still get the information across. Just my 2 cents

    • @TheMechanicDoctor
      @TheMechanicDoctor  6 лет назад +2

      Ok sorry for harsh response then... but can I tell you a secret? Do you wanna know why we aren’t narrating? It’s simply because we aren’t native English speaking people... we come from Montréal, qc, Canada... and because our mother tongue is French, we thought we would get tons of shit comments about our accent since most of our viewers come from the states... so yeah... maybe we will think about hiring an English voiceover guy once we make some money... but in the meantime this is what we have to deal with... if we wanted to make a living outta this and make real money we should’ve created a makeup tutorials channel! 😂
