Guitarists thoughts: "It's ok though, extra whammy can cover it up"... 6:59 "oh crap it's not getting any better".... 7:49 "Ok let's rely on my years of experience and genius to make it sound vaguely not awful to end the song". Fair play... 8:16 "No, drummer WAIT! I need time to tune up this guit......oh sod it" *shred*
in all likelihood it is probably the exact same mix recorded directly / untouched, it's just that what works in a live setting is vastly different from what works in a home setting on speakers or headphones or what have you. this is unfortunately common with youtube videos like this
I've seen/heard good live mixes on youtube, even amateur ones. Behemoth's live mix you can also watch here sounds much better in comparison. I agree that live always sounds different than CD, especially on home speakers, but it does sound that the levels are off here or that someone isn't mic'd properly.
Familie Kruizinga Thus ducking guy is straight up cringy dude. Like....painful to listen to, he could have at least bothered to properly tune before performing.
This mix isn't doing them any justice, sounded much better there, also why is it so quiet?? Still thanks for the upload as have been waiting to listen back to it 😀 also, achercocke??? 😂😂
agree completely. this seems like dry soundboard audio or pro shot whatever it's called. I understand modern sound is usually dry but Akercocke has so much atmosphere that was wasted to shity sound. Hopefully, we get a good mix
Knowing Jason, he was probably busy doing a Satanic ritual in style with a suit on. Jason cloned the demonic skinhead form of himself to cover for him.
Starts out pretty rough but they pull it together (and more) pretty fast. It's very interesting to see them improve on the fly like that, at least I thought so. Can't wait to hear a new album. One of my all-time faves and there's nobody like Akercocke. Like the new material they play in this show.
@@rorz999 I wouldn't know because I've never seen them live, but they're one of my favorite acts in extreme metal so I would have very much liked too! Even if they are not that tight live. Hope they come back together for another album!
No Of Menstrual Blood And Semen, or A Skin For Dancing in....fuck. I saw them twice before they split and the fucking CRUSHED both times. Was gonna watch this tonight...but going by the comments above I dunno of I want to, would rather wait until there is footage of them destroying again, like before the split. Can't wait for the album..
Dude, I'd definitely watch from Inner Sanctum (18:07) onwards, when the mix is already much improved. Actually, from Verdelet (13:07) things are already better and the initial tuning issues are sorted out. Enjoy!
My old band played, as support, with Akercocke, back in 2000, for a couple of shows in Great Britain. Satanic gentlemen! Welcome back, Ak. We've missed you :-)
Yeah it does, horrible sound altogether. Truly bad. Considering this was such an enormous show there is no excuse for this level of shit. Drums are SOOO badly Mic'ed and mixed. They sound flat as hell, no punch and it leaves the whole set feeling hollow. Then you throw in that guitar (which he didn't even bother to tune properly btw) that sounds like its playing out of a $20 travel amp and those god awful vocals and this is one of the worst performances I've ever heard from a professional band playing a festival like this. No excuse
I miss the days when Bloodstock would get more stuff like this on the main stage In the last few years especially the main stage has been alot lighter and to an extent alot more mainstream and I don't know how to feel about that, we need less of that and more of the Cocke at Bloodstock!
reading the comments here, I really can't hear a problem with Gray's double bass drumming or Paul Scanlan's playing. Akercocke's music is dissonant, so a slightly out of tune solo isn't that big a thing. I'd love to have the audio of this as a live album. I DO think their image is fucking horrendous though, they really need the suits back.
Good to see that this was just a really rusty performance. Just watched the footage from damnationfest and David is a completely different drummer there, fast and tight.
as much as it pains me to admit it paul scanlans guitar playing is quite bad in places...the new bassist however is fuckin sick as fuck so im still looking to seeing them next month haha
Fantastic band, admittedly this doesn't sound amazing but the albums are incredible. Do prefer the suits and general elitist look and style from the past. I've never listened to any other band and felt blown away like i did when i first heard akercocke.
Offt, I remember seeing this live and I wasn’t impressed. The mix was no better from where I was and the tuning of the guitars was a crying shame, they did there best but hell so much hype for these guys specifically on this performance
I'm glad at least Paul Scanlan kept his satanic locks hhahaha, really it's so nice to see him back! Also, the new bassist rules, but I wonder what Peter Theobalds is up to, why he's not involved with this glorious reunion?
Yeah, that's what I assumed. I was mainly talking about David, he looks classy as fuck but damn it's hard to get used to that look, haha. As "vain" as it sounds, I do wonder why he cut it, a bit. Oh well, I'll forgive him for this amazing performance!
There was a lot of fuck up, but he got cleared up towards the end. I guess he might have had bad monitor settings, and being out of practice. Give them time, they'll be back in shape
@deadasfak - Exactly. The sound improves vastly as the set progresses. It seems commenters just listened to the first song (which is admittedly painfully out of tune). And Paul totally nails the beautiful solo on Inner Sanctum.
I miss their old visual. And frankly... the drummer is playing worse than ever. His double bass are really fucked up. =/ I know that Akercocke never was a PERFECT band on stage. But... oh god, the drummer is killing the music!!!
Love how all answers are straight to the guy who made the comment, not to the comment itself. I don't know whether the drummer can't barely play double bass at 180bpm and above, or his eletronic bass drum is shit. Anyway, this bass drum is pretty annoying indeed!
That mix is criminal. They clearly had monitor and tuning issues. But it being so quiet bugs me the most. Made the crowd sound like they weren't even there.
Maybe their performance isnt’t the best , but they’re amazing... sound unique , their albums sound better ... 🥰 ... ❤️❤️❤️❤️ primero hay que conocerlos bien para juzgarlos ...
Electronic kick pads offer a consistent feel from practice room to show. Festival or shared kits are always tuned differently to what you get used to, floppier or bouncier drum skin reacts completely different to how your pedals are set up. Triggers react differently on different drum kits as well, you often get trigger misfires if the kick drum isn't dampened or tuned correctly. And of course at festivals and gigs there's no time to tune a shared kit to how you like it.
No doubt at all. i´m a drummer and i know that the feel with digital and if you are use to, specially on bleast beats or kicking hard, the rebound and feel are different. Otherwise, you can have that similar feel if you fill the bass drums with blankets and using the heads tight. Finally it´s a live show, i would rather see him playing without the pearl´s, assuming the digital kick drums! Its just my opinion! Thank you for the comments!
I was here and loved the set. I last saw them in 2004 and they are probably my favourite UK band! Alot different to when I last saw them. I was up on the barrier and thought it sounded great. I was chatting to some guys after who were saying the lead guitar was out of tune but I have never been a sound guy so I didnt notice..
i love how this band is like, "genre? what genre?!" its like blackened-death-prog-thrash-djent-atmospheric metal saw this show, it was fucking phenominal! first time ever hearing them!
After listening to parts of this video again, I'm inclined to agree. Paul's guitar sounds fucking horrible at times. The soft section of The Dark Inside, for example, leaves a hell of a lot to be desired.
Nah guys, I've seen em' live twice and seen a bunch of their live footage, they always sound had live. There are some better ones but they just don't translate to the stage well, at all. Vocals sound like dog shot and the lead guitarist...literally...can't play the parts. I also don't know if he ever learned how to tune his guitar, he must have someone do it for him in the studio cause it sounds great on record hahaha. It really sucks because you go to see a band you love, you wanna support them, five them money, keep them going and then this is what you get. It sucks, they need to figure something out. If they had a backing track that played to add more layers to the vocals it would sound tremendously better. Oh and if they fired their fucking road crew it would REALLLY help. If they are paying their crew to set up their mics and everything then they need their money back right away!!!
Try not commenting but all the flack with the suits? Gtfo with that, this is metal to it's core, stay in your lane, this ain't no Fleshgod Apocalypse ok?
I think they did very good, despite some issues as others have pointed out. The vocals could use some echo/reverb live i think, would make them seem more haunting and expressive. The audio technician or whatever must have been drunk or high as well.

I swear, Akercocke always gets stuck with really bad live mixes. It's a shame considering their technical and creative prowess.
in all likelihood it is probably the exact same mix recorded directly / untouched, it's just that what works in a live setting is vastly different from what works in a home setting on speakers or headphones or what have you. this is unfortunately common with youtube videos like this

Can barely hear Jason's guitar in this. It's a desk mix so not what the audience was listening to. Everything is so dry especially the vocal track.
agree completely. this seems like dry soundboard audio or pro shot whatever it's called. I understand modern sound is usually dry but Akercocke has so much atmosphere that was wasted to shity sound. Hopefully, we get a good mix

Fuck me, Jason really CAN get his growl as low as on the record!
And as high!
David Gray looks like someone left Benedict Cumberbatch in an elevator with Ricky Gervais for slightly too long.
So…he looks English 😂
I can't belive that's Jason Mendoca.
Knowing Jason, he was probably busy doing a Satanic ritual in style with a suit on. Jason cloned the demonic skinhead form of himself to cover for him.
It's good that they're back, but was Paul completely drunk during this performance?

Spot on. They do settle into a great set, and the mix of this video is not doing them justice.
The recording is pretty thrash so it doesn't do them any justice.
Beyond just the recording, the drums are sloppy at least in the first few songs. Double bass work is not tight.
@@rorz999 I wouldn't know because I've never seen them live, but they're one of my favorite acts in extreme metal so I would have very much liked too! Even if they are not that tight live. Hope they come back together for another album!
