Unauthorized transportation of gold out of Nazi Germany could be punishable by up to death. When the Nazis invaded Denmark, chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the medals in aqua regia and stored the solution in a flask on a shelf in his laboratory. The Nazis searched the lab thoroughly but never thought that the flask was anything important. The gold was precipitated out after the war and the medals recoined from the original gold. Chemistry frustrated fascism.

There was an episode of Hard Core Pawn when a couple wanted to sell their mysterious can of gold powder. When the Pawn owner tested it with a solution, it quickly erupted into a brown-orange fume. They determined that the gold powder was not gold. I thought that it may be gold plating scrap attached to another metal, and it was the other metal that reacted violently. I also noticed that in this video, the gold solution also had a similar reaction in the fluid; thereby, making me think that the family with the mysterious gold power may in fact had real gold plating, but it was the other metal(s) that reacted violently in the test. However, after seeing your video, I feel their final decision that it was not gold may have been wrong. Of course, there is no way for me to prove this. I am thinking, the pawn shop owner didn't really test the gold powder properly or more thoroughly.

So my concern is, the customer tossed the can of gold dust in the trash, maybe thinking it was just trash. Oh, and BTW - the customer and his wife said they found the can stashed 'somewhere' in of their home; something that a previous owner may have left behind. So, as far as I know, the Hard Core Pawn shop didn't keep the gold dust.
For those of you that don't think this guy reclaimed 22+ grams of pure gold from 10 lbs of plated pins, research this process. Also, there is documentation on the plating process and how much gold is in a plated pin, particularly military grade. People that are out scrapping TVs and laptops for gold content are largely wasting their time and effort, THIS is the way to go. You have to science.
I have kgs of gold plated electrical contacts from aircraft. Could I be bothered to do this and ensure it was done safely? Nope. Will they probably end up in a metal skip? Most likely.

Do it the way I am starting. Collecting and sorting into the various metals. So far all I have sold is the 125kg steel from items collected and 33kg of power cords. Total raised so far just under £60GBP. All funds raised will be used to fund a full recovery project. Aluminium, copper, brass and zinc will be recast into small trinkets to raise funds for 3 Veterans organisations here in UK

Hows this even difficult? Youre simply dissolving and separating everything. Its a more complicated version of putting salt into water and recouping the salt.
I have some notes as a chemist who does this on the regular. 1. Make your aqua regia separate. It needs time to react with itself before it can really be used effectively (this mainly saves time but also allows you to add the correct measurement, not sure why you added some sulfuric to that mix, especially to the Hydrochloric you already added). 2. It is the mixture of Hydrochloric and Nitric Acid in a specific ratio (3 parts Hydrochloric to 1 part Nitric, for those who don't have time to look it up.) 3. Don't wear gold accessories (Your watch) when handling aqua regia if you like said accessories. 4. Just overall more PPE (A labcoat or something with sleeves. PPE is not your first line of defence, it is your last) Sorry for this, it just rankled me horribly for no reason.
Jack, premixing aqua regia 3 to 1, or 4 to 1, is antiquated and no longer used by small gold refiners. It wastes chemicals, and guarantees problems with excess nitric during precipitation. Instead we use incremental nitric dosing. I can dissolve one ounce of gold in 150ml hydrochloric and 15ml to 18ml nitric acid. Incremental nitric dosing, one of the most valuable refining techniques that I’ve ever learned. Second only to inquartation.

How about a video on how to retrieve gold from electronic and computer-boards trash ? Isn't there gold in computer waist and the electronic likes ? And not only gold , but other precious and rare metals .
Actually it's becoming more profitable now to just go through e waste to obtain gold than to mine it. Quite a few companies are now in the field of mining gold from e waste. Alot of those gold played pins probably cane from old e waste. This is Definitely not something the avg. Person should be attempting after watching a couple youtube video. I mean of you dedicate the time researching and learning that's one thing but without proper PPE this can easily kill you. I work with HCA, Nitric and Aqua Regia note something you should be fucking around with without ample ventilation and filtration. Even outside stay the fuck away from the Fumes compleatly. It takes alot of e waste to accumulate a decent amount of gold though.

It would be interesting to repeat this experiment with the ferric chloride process, then recover the ferric chloride and copper in an electrolysis cell to see if this can be done with a much lower input cost, and using all that nitric acid.
He may do this: Perform all steps slowly and keep containers cool while neutralizing. Acid neutralization: Make a basic solution using a large volume of cold water and an appropriate inorganic base. Stir the solution while slowly adding diluted acid. Base neutralization: First add the base to a large vessel containing water. Slowly add an appropriate inorganic acid. Allow the contents to react for 15 minutes to dissipate any heat before testing the pH. The container should not be hot, and the contents should not be smoking. If the container is still hot after 15 minutes, allow the reaction to continue until the heat has dissipated before continuing to the next step. Test the neutralized solution to confirm a pH between 5 and 9, and flush to the sewer with at least 20 parts water.
Its mostly just acid. You neutralize it with something like Baking soda and then it can be sent down a drain. It isnt harmful to anything once diluted and neutral. At least not in the quantities he uses. If your going through drums of it I imagine its a bit more involved. That being said, that is a vast simplification, do not try this at home without proper training.

Just remember that gold is not an investment. Gold is real money and doesn’t change. What changes is the value of the currency that gold is priced in. The currency is declining in value and purchasing power. This decline is reflected in the price of gold and silver - they only appear to be rising.
1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds. The yield on this was a little over 22 grams. That's about 0.78 ounce. Multiply the current price for an ounce of gold by 0.78 to find the yield. You'll need to estimate the cost of materials, mostly the acids. Also you'd have to consider the cost of the hood, air filtering system, chemistry equipment and disposal of waste materials. Plus the cost of the raw material, the pins. Not to mention the cost of your location for the lab and any transportation costs. Plus the cost of your time. Reality can be a bitch.
@@brianmccarthy5557 Divide the current spot price of gold by 31.1 grams. Multiply that X 22 grams.Your mistake come in the fact that you are figuring an oz as 28 grams which is actually right, but gold is measured in Troy oz which is 31.1 grams to an ounce.

My grandfather who was the meat cutter for the Plumas-Eureka gold mine in northern California went blind and had to go to a sanatorium in Reno. He was in his early 40's. The processing mill used mercury to separate the "fines" from the coarser tailings and then got rid of it in Jameson creek which unfortunately was the town's water supply. Over the time of a few years he did regain some sight but not enough to work anymore. My dad was on his own at the age of 14. At 17.5 he joined the navy to fight in WW1. Modern living through chemistry.

I know this took a lot of nitric to do the refining this way. If you have a starting material that your pretty sure is 99% copper and gold, would it be easier to start with aqua Regia and dissolve it all then add additional copper to drop out the gold out of solution in accordance with the reactivity series of metals or bubble SO2 gas? Or is the gold to copper ratio too low and that would cause problems?
Nitric acid in the England is £11.95 per litre or £59. 75 for 5 litres. Do not know how much it is in the States, but if similar! Not a bad layout. Sulphuric acid is even cheaper.
Hello Street tips. I have a question. I have gold pins I have been trying to dissolve in 67.2 % nitric acid but it never fully dissolved them and I keep having to add nitric acid. I also had some of the blue plastic that the pins were inside of in the mixture and now it's bubbling up pretty badly like there's dich soap in it and some of the pins also had the solder on them still but now in my bucket it seems to be a bluish mess with some of the pin not dissolved and the plastic isn't dissolving either it's just kinda dissolve some of the plastic but what's going to be the best for recoving the gold from this. Do you have any advice. Thanks

The only reason I did these is because the seller had them analyzed and knew their composition including how much gold was present. I knew that I could dissolve the base metals with nitric to get the gold off.

Nordic gold looks just like real gold foil. But is mostly copper - no gold at all

Pawn shops are not metallurgy experts. They're the worst place to sell gold to, because they have no idea what to do with it.

Heat more and use borax flux. It's not ready to pour until it's pulled into a ball with no sharp edges. You'll get it.
Higher temperature. That way you have more time to pour

I sold for well over $100 per gram. The spot price is way off and can’t be relied upon for an accurate determination of the price of gold.

Hows this even difficult? Youre simply dissolving and separating everything. Its a more complicated version of putting salt into water and recouping the salt.

It’s not that complicated. But if you’ve never done it then it can be very intimating on your first try - gets easier after that.

I have some notes as a chemist who does this on the regular.
1. Make your aqua regia separate. It needs time to react with itself before it can really be used effectively (this mainly saves time but also allows you to add the correct measurement, not sure why you added some sulfuric to that mix, especially to the Hydrochloric you already added).
2. It is the mixture of Hydrochloric and Nitric Acid in a specific ratio (3 parts Hydrochloric to 1 part Nitric, for those who don't have time to look it up.)
3. Don't wear gold accessories (Your watch) when handling aqua regia if you like said accessories.
4. Just overall more PPE (A labcoat or something with sleeves. PPE is not your first line of defence, it is your last)

Jack, premixing aqua regia 3 to 1, or 4 to 1, is antiquated and no longer used by small gold refiners. It wastes chemicals, and guarantees problems with excess nitric during precipitation. Instead we use incremental nitric dosing. I can dissolve one ounce of gold in 150ml hydrochloric and 15ml to 18ml nitric acid. Incremental nitric dosing, one of the most valuable refining techniques that I’ve ever learned. Second only to inquartation.

Hello , what a video , fantastic . Incredible that the gold is just there for the picking with scraps when one knows how to do it . How about a video on how to retrieve gold from electronic and computer-boards trash ? Isn't there gold in computer waist and the electronic likes ? And not only gold , but other precious and rare metals .
Actually it's becoming more profitable now to just go through e waste to obtain gold than to mine it. Quite a few companies are now in the field of mining gold from e waste. Alot of those gold played pins probably cane from old e waste. This is Definitely not something the avg. Person should be attempting after watching a couple youtube video. I mean of you dedicate the time researching and learning that's one thing but without proper PPE this can easily kill you. I work with HCA, Nitric and Aqua Regia note something you should be fucking around with without ample ventilation and filtration. Even outside stay the fuck away from the Fumes compleatly.
It takes alot of e waste to accumulate a decent amount of gold though.

Hopefully companies will mine more e-waste in the future , so that these metals (not only gold) are not lost to the economy . All e-waste , computers , mobile phones , etc. , should be collected as trash seperatly , so as not to loose it . The economy and the environment will fare well like that .

It would be interesting to repeat this experiment with the ferric chloride process, then recover the ferric chloride and copper in an electrolysis cell to see if this can be done with a much lower input cost, and using all that nitric acid.
Or using a homemade carbon arc to burn /melt

He may do this:
Perform all steps slowly and keep containers cool while neutralizing.
Acid neutralization: Make a basic solution using a large volume of cold water and an appropriate inorganic base. Stir the solution while slowly adding diluted acid.
Base neutralization: First add the base to a large vessel containing water. Slowly add an appropriate inorganic acid.
Allow the contents to react for 15 minutes to dissipate any heat before testing the pH. The container should not be hot, and the contents should not be smoking. If the container is still hot after 15 minutes, allow the reaction to continue until the heat has dissipated before continuing to the next step.
Test the neutralized solution to confirm a pH between 5 and 9, and flush to the sewer with at least 20 parts water.
That's a very good question.
Its mostly just acid. You neutralize it with something like Baking soda and then it can be sent down a drain. It isnt harmful to anything once diluted and neutral. At least not in the quantities he uses. If your going through drums of it I imagine its a bit more involved. That being said, that is a vast simplification, do not try this at home without proper training.

Just remember that gold is not an investment. Gold is real money and doesn’t change. What changes is the value of the currency that gold is priced in. The currency is declining in value and purchasing power. This decline is reflected in the price of gold and silver - they only appear to be rising.

1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds. The yield on this was a little over 22 grams. That's about 0.78 ounce. Multiply the current price for an ounce of gold by 0.78 to find the yield. You'll need to estimate the cost of materials, mostly the acids. Also you'd have to consider the cost of the hood, air filtering system, chemistry equipment and disposal of waste materials. Plus the cost of the raw material, the pins. Not to mention the cost of your location for the lab and any transportation costs. Plus the cost of your time. Reality can be a bitch.
@@brianmccarthy5557 Divide the current spot price of gold by 31.1 grams. Multiply that X 22 grams.Your mistake come in the fact that you are figuring an oz as 28 grams which is actually right, but gold is measured in Troy oz which is 31.1 grams to an ounce.

My grandfather who was the meat cutter for the Plumas-Eureka gold mine in northern California went blind and had to go to a sanatorium in Reno. He was in his early 40's. The processing mill used mercury to separate the "fines" from the coarser tailings and then got rid of it in Jameson creek which unfortunately was the town's water supply. Over the time of a few years he did regain some sight but not enough to work anymore. My dad was on his own at the age of 14. At 17.5 he joined the navy to fight in WW1. Modern living through chemistry.

I know this took a lot of nitric to do the refining this way. If you have a starting material that your pretty sure is 99% copper and gold, would it be easier to start with aqua Regia and dissolve it all then add additional copper to drop out the gold out of solution in accordance with the reactivity series of metals or bubble SO2 gas? Or is the gold to copper ratio too low and that would cause problems?
This, sulfuric acid stripping cell and acid/peroxide are the three ways that I know of

Nitric acid in the England is £11.95 per litre or £59. 75 for 5 litres. Do not know how much it is in the States, but if similar! Not a bad layout. Sulphuric acid is even cheaper.

Hello Street tips. I have a question. I have gold pins I have been trying to dissolve in 67.2 % nitric acid but it never fully dissolved them and I keep having to add nitric acid. I also had some of the blue plastic that the pins were inside of in the mixture and now it's bubbling up pretty badly like there's dich soap in it and some of the pins also had the solder on them still but now in my bucket it seems to be a bluish mess with some of the pin not dissolved and the plastic isn't dissolving either it's just kinda dissolve some of the plastic but what's going to be the best for recoving the gold from this. Do you have any advice. Thanks
The only pins I’ve attempted were copper base metal. I’m not sure what you have there.

Can you do this with any type of metal for example what if those pins were brass with nickel plating and gold plating would i stil be able to recover the gold?
The only reason I did these is because the seller had them analyzed and knew their composition including how much gold was present. I knew that I could dissolve the base metals with nitric to get the gold off.
