"..that's all there is to refueling in a Tomcat...." says Jabbers to a certain group of individuals (myself included) that struggle to maintain 'finger-tip formation' while parked cold on the deck.
Thanks so much dude. I'm new to the Tomcat and on my first few attempts I kept wondering how can people keep this cow straight. Then I looked up this tutorial. The wing sweep helped me tremendously and I went from not even being to fly in formation to being able to refuel an empty tank on first try in 15 minutes. Great vid!
The air to air refuelling is the first thing I want to try out. Extremely cool to know that Jester updates on the fuel in the tanks. Thank you so much for this video and your superb content! Liked!
I know it's an old video but thanks to it I managed to glug glug glug in the tomcat. My trouble was I was trying to find a sweet spot on the throttle to match the tanker and was failing of course. So constantly moving it back and forth to match that speed made it way more stable
Is there any appreciable difference in turbulence when tanking from a turboprop like the KC-130 vs. large jets like the KC-135, KC-10, or another fighter-sized jet like the KA-6D or S-3B?
The KC-135 and KC-10 both have much larger areas that get effected by aerodynamic flow, on top of that the jet motors are so powerful they may cause a one-wing stall if you get caught behind them. That is however much harder to do in the large F-14 than the small F-16C as you need to shove almost the entire wing in behind the engine nasel
Yep bomb mode on the wings made a world of difference. Along with setting the curves on my axes on my HOTAS. Of all the planes I have on DCS, the F-14 ironically was the one that I finally successfully refueled with the tanker! Thanks for the video!
A2A refueling is the thing that really pushed me into deciding to get a TrackIR. In the Refueling practice instant action mission you're fueling from a KC-135 and let me tell you how difficult it is to fly in formation with something you cannot see nor move your head to see. any touch of the hat switch usually sends me careening off in some direction. I can't wait to get this tracking device set up so I can actually get gas. Should also help with traps too.
Second time you mentioned the radio menu you said 'backspace' vs backslash. Otherwise, great vid! I've ran out of gas trying to refuel already, now I'm ready to give it another go. Bomb wing sweep is brilliant.
Thank you! I've been trying and trying and Don't think I've seen other videos mention to turbulence. I thought it was something I was doing wrong withy set up.
Hello. So I can not figure out what I am doing wrong. I try and set up a simple mission to practice refueling. One F-14 and one tanker. However, when I pull up behind the tanker after making the initial call for fuel and the call that i am ready to hook up the basket never comes out. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I have tried several different types of tankers with no success in getting the basket to deploy when I prompt the tanker.
@@Jabbers I figured it out. I was calling for fuel while I was on the left of the tanker instead of being behind it in the fuel ready position. Thank you.
@@Jabbers But now that you mention the response I think that is what threw me off. Because he did respond when i was on the left but nothing happened. So you have to be behind in fuel position before you can make the call out and trigger the proper response from the sim.
I'm having issues where it seems the basket seems to be invisible to the probe. It needs to catch it but the probe just goes through it. It's kinda frustrating since I can AAR other aircraft pretty smoothly.
@@Jabbers I was working with the KC-130 on an instant action mission and spent a good 90 mins practicing. No hookups. Then I did the aar instant action after I commented and hooked up pretty quickly. So my next step is mixing up these variables a bit to see if there are differences somewhere. 👍
Hey jabberz. I notice you sort of oscillate the throttle up and down. Does this help with maintaining on speed with the tanker by engaging then disengaging the throttle constantly. This is probably the thing I find hardest with AAR. I can fly straight and in the right spot but find myself constantly chasing my tail with the throttle. Edit: just practised doing this with the throttle it has helped a lot. Have just achieved my first two refuellings with the tomcat within an hour oscillating the throttle. It may not be something I have to do forever but it has definitely helped with being able to judge my speed and adjust it on the fly without concentrating too much. This allowed me to concentrate on my stick a bit more and free up my stress levels. Cheers
It's something really done, getting the exact speed perfect and maintaining it without ever touching the throttle is probably never gonna hapoen Same with landing on speed,
Ya and if yiu think about it, as your attitude changes left right and down when staying lined up, your airspeed in relation to the tanker (closure) changes, requiring you to increase or decrease your throttle slightly
Was playing the fear the hones campaign and when I connected to the a6 it wouldn't transfer and fuel. I sat there for a while. He ended up disconnecting from me and there was no more radio option to rejoin
I wonder if anyone can help me as to why I can't see mirrors in my Cockpit of F-14B , I have RTX 2080 & up to date drivers, you guys have any idea as to why ?
I don't even know how to match the speed with another aircraft ( like a tanker) , either I don't reach him or I go too fast. Is there a flight rule I missed about how to fly in formation ?! How can we know how fast to go without knowing the other aircraft's speed ?!
Hey great video here! Little question: I'd like to give rides to my buddies in the RIO seat, do you think it will be possible to be in the pilot seat with the track IR, and a friend slotting in the RIO seat with a VR headset on the same PC? I assume it's not possible to do on the same PC as we cannot run two instances of the game at the same time but still would be pretty neat if there would be any hack to make it possible! guess it would be tough for the rig even with a high end one... thx
Try the Harrier. The refuelling probe is about 2 metres off to your left so you can't even see it it without completely turning your head so you can't see the tanker...

I’ve been trying to do this in VR but just don’t have enough buttons on my HOTAS to do everything and the clarity is not as good in VR so I’ll go back to Track IR and try it again but this time put my wings in Bomb Mode and hope the aircraft is more stable because the buffeting is killing me.
