    This is seriously one of the most brilliant Case 1 landings I have seen on RUclips, can't tell you how many times I've watched/studied this. One thing that blows my mind is how the heck do you get on speed and trimmed out so fast after completing the initial 180 break back towards the carrier?! You get dialed in so quickly and so precisely! Is there heavy use of DLC, or is that purely from trimming and managing throttle? I always run into the issue with struggling to keep the nose from taking a huge dive and losing too much altitude after completing the turn and trying to get on speed. Never quite sure when to get back on the throttle and how much to give. You do it flawlessly man, so many things happening in such a short window of time! Truly impressive! Cheers!

    In the fleet out on deployment or doing work-ups with the CvBG, most of the time there will be a guard ship stationed 1000yds directly aft which in addition to being there to pick up anyone who goes in the drink is also there for a quick indexing while landing. You should be coming out of the 90 just forward of the duty guard and is especially useful while doing quals.

    Question: You are not using auto throttle in this video correct? Also, on the final turn towards the back of the carrier how do you keep your onspeed AOA so perfect? Are you primarily managing throttle, or constantly trimming as well to keep the E bracket centered? Much use of DLC? My issue is that right at the last second when I level out from the turn just as I'm about to reach the deck my AOA goes totally out of whack. Do you have a recommendation in terms of keeping it simple / focusing on just certain control elements and leaving others alone? I think I might be messing with too many things and making it overly complicated. But at the same time, every adjustment with the Tomcat then requires re-adjustment of some other area. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much! Still the absolute best Case-1 vid in the Tomcat on RUclips, hands down!

    I know this video is old, but it's really great to watch someone do this and have them slowly explaining things out at first and speed it up as the procedure goes on. A lot of the stuff for this procedure just barely made sense because in most cases it doesn't seem like you should have a speedbrake for landing, rely so much on weird flaps and stuff to land but seeing it in motion it makes much more sense. I know this video is old, but I do have a question. Do you possibly know why the procedure asks for wings swept back so far on the approach? Wouldn't it make more logical sense to have the wings forward for lift and to slow down? I don't know, just has always seemed odd.

    Serval question maverick
    1 how do you maintain on speed whilst the rpm is around 90%, for at 90% rpm the aircraft would accelerate for which would rise the E bracket over over 10 AoA making it unreachable , for me is usually 85%~86%rpm
    2how do you ensure stable banking and on speed while the aircraft is in 120 knots extreme low speed, and still having steady glide slope
    3 the dlc is highly disruptive to aoa and on speed, but in you video, there is no such sign
    4 in manual, dlc are designed to control sink rate without using throttle, did you use both throttle and dlc on on final approach? If is, how do you still ensure sinking while having an 90% high rpm?
    if you don’t mind, please consider remake a video that could show your stick movement as well as the mirror to help us learn about your control. you have so far the BEST carrier landing in RUclips

    Hi Maverick great video and very controlled flying and that's what originates this post. Case 1 after the break you keep 800 ft altitude really smoothly. When I do my break turn I'm really fighting the plane to keep it at 800ft in terms of the additional lift from the wings coming forward and then the drag from lowering the gear and flaps. I'm not very smooth. Do you have any tips to help? Are you using constant rudder input to keep your turn smooth. Any advice will be greatly appreciated 🙏

    • @104thMaverick
      @104thMaverick  3 года назад +1

      Hi Justin, in regards to maintaining 800ft its important to be ahead of the aircraft and to be able to predict how its going to behave as the wing position changes, so this means making control adjustments before the aircraft reacts, essentially what I mean is you have to start counteracting the aircrafts tendency to want to climb before it actually happens, this takes a lot of practice my friend and is something I struggled with early on.
      Its also very important to always start the turns with the rudder and never the stick, I don't tend to keep the rudder in all the way around the turn however there are certain wind conditions where this will be required.
      Practice makes perfect my friend, I struggled for a good while before I got on top of the aircraft to this level so don't be to hard on yourself if you don't see results straight away, remember... this is the hardest thing you can do in an aircraft! But the good news is if you continue to practice you WILL see results my friend and then you'll be catching those crispy groove entries that give you lots of confidence to fly the ball all the way down to the 3 wire.

      Hi Maverick. So when, for example, the gear is about to come down, you know your nose is going to dip because of the drag. To you counteract this with pitch adjustment only or to you pre-trim at the crucial point. As always brother your guidance is appreciated.

    Maverick, fantastic tutorial. I am still straining to get lined up correctly on the e-bracket in this jet. In the hornet I get speed settled in and use trim to get it on the e-bracket and it stays there no problem. In the 14 I feel like the e-bracket is constantly moving and I'm having to chase it with trim constantly. Any tips or ideas about what I may be doing wrong? Again, I have LOTS of wire 3 traps in the hornet but this is really vexing me. Thanks for the help!

    Sorry to harp Maverick. In terms of arresting the drag from the gear down do you compensate with power or stick or do you pre-trim or a combination of all of the above? As always, your guidance and help is greatly appreciated.

  • @TacticalOni

    Mav, this is a great video. I'm working on my traps now, trying to get more proficient at them. The main issue I'm having is throttle control. I want to get good with manual throttles befor letting AUTO take over. The only thing I want to see in videos like this is a repeater for your input, so guys like me who can't quite get positions right can see where you are putting the controls at certain moments.
    I'm loving the 'Cat, she really needs finesse and I'm working still on calming down my inputs.
    I suppose the smarter thing to do would be to try landing on solid ground first >_>

      @@104thMaverick That would be great! I got my first couple 3 wires today but I went way outside NATOPS and started on the groove more like 1.2nm out instead to give myself more time to get the bird where I wanted it to be. I can get everything else sorted, but in the final 90s I tend to get swallowed up chasing the E bracket and trying to balance engine power with DLC and everything else.

  • @bh2022

    minor thing but when you said you were at 600 ft you were actually at 700. need to reference the radar altimeter for the approach also shown as the right vertical strip with the dots on the hud. also would have been nice to know the proper abeam distance since that varies per aircraft iirc and is a big point to hit for a good lineup (saw this later in the video so nevermind). good looking tutorial though! also why is it in the procedure for 68 deg wing sweep for the upwind? I dont see why you cant just leave them in auto the whole way so I dont know if there is an actual reason or its just showboating

    • @104thMaverick
      @104thMaverick  5 лет назад +8

      Thanks for the feedback... I spoke to a real Tomcat pilot regarding the 68 degree wing sweep and asked him the same question... he told me there was no operational reason for it, they simply did it because it looks cool :D

      @@104thMaverick more than fair! Just wanted to clarify. Thought initially it might be trim related since you need a lot of nose up trim to get that 15 unit aoa I would imagine so thought it might start you closer to it. But guess not and that's fine

    • @CakePrincessCelestia
      @CakePrincessCelestia 5 лет назад

      IIRC I've read (written by Victory205) that the 68° has the purpose of having more drag when initiating the break as well. It's like a delta wing, being a massive airbrake with some AoA.

    Do you have to use the DLC to help descend in the groove while using AUTO throttle or is it enough to be on speed to descend?

    • @evoman44
      @evoman44 5 лет назад

      I am also trying to figure this out. So far just using AUTO throttle on the F-14 has not being as useful and reliable as the Viggens Auto throttle.

    Great vid, Maverick. The Top Gun sound bytes were ON POINT.
    Couple of quick questions:
    800ft should be AGL, and not MSL right?
    Is it like the hornet with regards to keeping on speed AoA, by using trim to set AoA and using power/dlc to maintain altitude/descent? Or is that just a fly-by-wire thing?

    • @104thMaverick
      @104thMaverick  5 лет назад +1

      Yes mate 800ft should be the radar altitude which is AGL over water. I messed up in the video and flew the Baro Altitude instead of the Radar Altitude. There is no Fly By Wire in the Tomcat but it is the same process of getting on speed as the Hornet, you slow down and trim to get the aircraft on speed at the correct AoA and use power and trim to stay on speed.

When you are using the little bit of rudder to start the turn towards the groove, is that all it is?
