- Best-known for his work with Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's versatility and technique as a soloist made him a hugely in-demand session guitarist from the '70s on. Baxter (who still refuses to discuss the origins of his nickname) landed his first recording gig in 1969 with the psychedelic pop group Ultimate Spinach. In 1972, he began his association with Steely Dan, playing on their debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill. Following 1974's Pretzel Logic, Baxter moved on to the Doobie Brothers, debuting later that year on What Once Were Vices Are Now Habits and continuing on for several more albums through 1978. During the mid-'70s, he also began to expand his session work, going on to work with the likes of Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand, Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams, Ringo Starr, Carly Simon, Donna Summer, Joni Mitchell, Rick Nelson among many others.
Jeff's general interest in technology led him into production, most notably helming several albums for hard rockers Nazareth. He also developed an interest in military hardware and weapons systems and was hired in 2001 by the Bush administration as a defence analyst, also serving as a consultant to several U.S. congressmen (and continuing his music career).
Join me as I sit down with the world-renowned guitarist to explore his incredible journey in music. From early beginnings at the age of five, to the legendary bands he's played with, and his journey to launching his first solo album, "Speed of Heat", this episode of A Breath of Fresh Air has it all. Jeff shares about the intimacy of the guitar, his first band that was "way too nuts and way too much fun," and the secrets to his enduring success.
We go behind the scenes of the iconic songwriting duo of Donald Fagan and Walter Becker, and how they made their mark in the music industry.
Jeff walks us through his life and times. It's an incredible story. Check it out here on youtube, through the website www.abreathoffreshair.com.au or on any of your favourite podcast platforms. Видеоклипы
❤😊favorite female singer 😊❤
Kenny Edwards & Andrew Gold RIP
linda ruled the world for a while, what a great vocalist.
For a while she had 6 consecutive platinum records based on todays sales standards including the biggest selling spanish language album of all time a record that still stands suggest it was quite a bit longer than a while
Linda had a great set of pipes! Que rica!
The harmony singers kick ass! Thanks Clydie and Shirley!
That’s Andrew Gold on lead guitar! He was in Linda’s band before having a career under his own name with hits like “Thank You for Being a Friend”.
he was an awesome muso, wasn't he?
Lonely Boy won't go off my playlist. Lol
Some really hot musicians playing with Linda such as Richie Hayward from Little Feat on drums and the great backing vocalists Clydie King and Vendetta Fields among others.
"Go Back Home Again" is always in my brain!
Also one of the original Stone Ponies along with John David Souther. RIP to both.
That was a fast fifty years.
wasn't it!
True that!
Had its moments though...😎
Skunk is on the congas. Wild.
Skunk is playing congas
Richie Hayward of Little Feat is on drums.
Back up is Clydie King and Shirley Matthews
I believe it's Ray Manzarek of the Doors on keys!
Andrew Gold on lead guitar is no slouch
Willie Nelson said 'there were 2 types of men; those who knew nothing about Linda & all the rest who were in love w/her.' Most of the cats of our BOOMER generation were indeed in love. Linda, a voice that soars w/eagles & then can melt away into a meadow of velver; so talented, highly intelligent & what a gorgeous lady!
Oh yeah, she was a cutie all right. Just ask Jerry Brown, lol.
My god what a voice. So nuanced, open and powerful!
I love how LR steps aside and starts playing the tambourine during the guitar solo. Respect for the band. She had such a tremendous voice.
Dynamite voice we all fell in love with. Thank you Linda for all the great music.
One of the great female voices. She could really belt it out.
Ronstadt’s bands always had top flight musicians. What a talent!
Skunk was hell on the congas. Played them on several Steely Dan hits.
And Linda is just too damn cute.
Most remarkable is the mother and daughter backing singers !! great voices
Outstanding vocal! She could do it all. Linda at her best!
The girl next door!
my childhood love. what a fantastic voice❤
Had no idea Skunk could play rhythm so well or even congas.. figures..
My grey hair doll. Living in California, she had the windpipes. a beautiful natural lady. Prayers. "SIMPLE DREAMs". Became reality
Once Ms Linda covered your song you no longer owned it❤ What a singer!!!
lets have a shout out for whatever kind of material these ladies are wearing
Thank you SK for this gem.
Skunk on percussion, no less.
Wow, she could sing.
So good!
What a voice Linda had ! Just about my favourite female singer of this genre. She even turned the Eagles song Desperado into gold. And yes, that was Andrew Gold, not Skunk Baxter. Well spotted !
Linda was a total POWER HOUSE. What a voice. Love the backup singers. Linda keeping her fingers crossed due to the lead guitar player going off the rails, she knew when to come back in vocally despite guitar player doin' his thing big time. lol. Drummer was great.
Governor Brown was a lucky, lucky man.
Betty Everett recorded You’re No Good in 1964
Hot stuff
Agree with Georgewells9047 it's Andrew Gold on guitar!
She was pretty good
Thanks
Ronstadt was truly a pioneer of chick rock and was very good.
Skunk on timbales.
Skunk Baxter - congos, Richie Hayward drums, Andrew Gold lead guitar, does anyone else think that's Ray Manzarek of the Doors playing keyboards?
I was only 4. But started playing drums a year or 2 later
That's Andrew Gold
Is that Simone Jackson on backing vocals?😂
Little feat drummer Richie Hayward.
J Barnes. Andrew Gold did not write the song it was written by Clint Ballard Jr.
Skunk Baxter could also play guitar ( doobie brothers)but equally great on the congas… ( steely Dan ) perhaps other instruments as well, he was and I think still steeped in the music business.
He had quite a few moments on guitar with Steely Dan.
He was in Elton John's band for a while
Andrew Gold on guitar
Linda rocked. That guitar was way off on that solo at 1:30
I wouldn't want to be on the same stage as a skunk 🙂
Very impressive how she (rolls?) her voice on "I'm gonna say it again".
Very good, but Van Halen's version on their 2nd album is dynamite!
If it was skunk baxter he be in his high chair
Skunk, now designing defense systems for the US govt.
He does NOT design defense systems. He just spews a lot of bs talk about the various systems and has a few concepts.
Pipes.
Where is Jeff Baxter?
Where is Skunk. That's Andrew brother
Seems to be Andrew Gold on guitar there, Sandy?
I'm pretty sure that is not Jeff Skunk Baxter. (Correction - it seems that is him playing tomtoms, not guitar.)
he's certainly part of the action, isn't he!
Well, congas, actually. Tom Toms are on the drum kit.

Linda’s voice was so good it’s beyond description she is iconic. How many female singers are known strictly by their first name LINDA WHITNEY TINA STEVIE ADELE Nothing else needs to be said
And Janis.
@@michiganriverman
Janis body of work since she died early probably doesn’t qualify her for this maybe Nancy Wilson
@@robertbyington7715 You said "female singers who are known strictly by their first name", and you knew obviously who I was talking about.
@@michiganriverman
I didn’t suggest I didn’t know her the correlation was her body of work 3 albums
wasn’t large enough to be considered in this group was the point being made.
That is Andrew Gold on guitar. Please change the title.
Andrew Gold, not Skunk Baxter.
Looks and sounds like Don Felder on lead to me. Or even JD Souther. Can't tell though.
Bigger surprise - Andrew Gold!
@markberryhill2715 You are right! Good catch. Another one who left us way too soon.
And I think that's Dallas Taylor on drums
I think it looks like Dallas!
Little Feat's Richie Hayward on drums.
@@musicsavant1079 Thanks! You're right
That's not Jeff Baxter. That is Andrew Gold.
No Jeff Baxter in sight !
No Baxter here.....
Wrong Title..the Skunk is not in on this one!
Skunk on congas,Richie Haywood on drums.
That is Andrew Gold- NOT Jeff Baxter.
He wrote the song and Linda Did not care for it when first presented with it.
Andrew owned a Binson Echorek that had been dropped sustaining some minor damage- thus had a warble in the spin.
He recorded the demo with it- hence birthing the iconic guitar solo as it was played on the finished Master track.
Andrew Gold on guitar but written by Clint Ballard Junior and originally done by Dee Dee Warwick in 1963.
I don’t see Skunk Baxter anywhere on this video.
Watch it again, the first person you see when the Band starts to play is Jeff playing Congas. He played Congas on a Steely Dan Video too.
@@Timinator62 I did, hilarious that he’s there for one second, then his hands are in there for a few seconds later.
He was called "Skunk" because his farts stunk so badly.
That's not Baxter.
Wonderful little bio of Jeff in the description but indeed, as has been pointed out below, it's Mr Gold on guitar this time out.
As to Linda, she is seriously overrated. She's an above average (compared to me, for example) but not particularly strong singer, and her song choices were often quite confounding for her style: These often undermined her credibility as an artist ("Tumbling Dice" is the most egregious example; it's akin to Avril Lavigne talking about listening to Radiohead ... i don't buy it for a second).
However, her take on this song is magical! It's a damned close second to Dee Dee Warwick's version, and the addition of the lovely guitar work, as well as the subtle lyric changes (in the second verse in particular), make this rather a keeper. And to show i'm not a total snob on this stuff, i also prefer her "Blue Bayou" over Roy's (i know, i know, NOW who's being confounding, right?).
Thanks for posting; it's a terrific performance.
PS - that isn't Yvonne Elliman doing back-ups, is it? No. Is it?
Jeff's playing the Congas, the clip shows Jeff right at the start of the song. Jeff is here on RUclips playing Congas with Steely Dan too.
That’s not Skunk…..
He is on the congas, of all crazy things!
Good voice, great band, but her politics are horrible 😮
Hey Sandy Kaye ...@georgewells9047 is spot on ... that is Linda's musical director (and solo hit maker) Andrew Gold on guitar ... check out his career and many independent hit songs here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Gold
Linda Rondstat and not Jeff Skunk Baxter
the congo player is Skunk.
