Nice to hear this about Jimmy Hodder...that SD debut is one of the best debuts by any band, any genre. Still sounds fresh in 2022.

My only regret when I saw Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic Tour stop at the U. of Toledo in April 1974 was that they didn't perform "Midnite Cruiser." I so wanted to hear drummer Jim Hodder sing that one. The following September I discovered their first single "Dallas" in the listening library at Bowling Green State U., and fell in love with his voice once again. It also features some drop-dead gorgeous pedal steel guitar from Jeff Baxter, which made the song a perfect fit for Steely Dan's ABC Records labelmates Poco and their pedal steel wizard Rusty Young. I bought Poco's 1975 album "Head Over Heels" just so I could hear their cover of "Dallas" anytime I wanted.

Met Jeffrey Baxter and Jim Hodder in November '73 backstage at the Roxy when they were backing up Linda Ronstadt. Cannot remember if Walter was with them or not due to my increasingly faulty memory. Met Jeffrey again a few years later -- post-Doobie Brothers -- at his home in Nichols Canyon. Jim's lead vocal on Midnight Cruiser has long been one of my favourites from their first lp. Jeffrey wanted to get my band together with Little Feat's Richie Hayward, but it never happened. His lectures relative to his time with the DOD are illuminating about music and thinking outside the proverbial box in which too many government types are locked in and "never even know they have the key" (as that Jack Tempchin song lyric goes).

Loved his drumming on those early records. Kings and Fire in the Hole were perfect😉.

Here is a question that I would like to ask Jeff. Would you consider working with Donald Fagen again at some point, maybe not on a Steely Dan thing (R.I.P Walter Becker) but maybe on a solo project. How do you really feel about bringing up that point in your career again?

I've no idea who Ritchie is. Maybe when a name is introduced to a conversation, take 5 seconds to say "who" the guy is.

Just about every musician that signed a recording contract was inadvertently " Selling out to the Man"- that's why so many were ripped off.

Great point about Hodder as a singer. Wish we'd heard more of him, while he was around.
