Tank Destroyers are probably called Tank Chasers because the German word for them is Panzerjäger or Jagdpanzer. Jäger means hunter but can also be translated as chaser. Tank hunter would make more sense, but hey.

I ended up deleting this bit from the video because I couldn't coherently articulate the thought, but basically: a Russian term for Tank Destroyer (one of several) is Exterminator. It also happens to be their term for the class of aircraft designed to chase down and intercept enemy bombers. I think in the mind of underpaid programmer who ended up translating the UI-related stuff, all these things became conflated.

Rapa Nui (aka Easter Island), where the famous Moai statues are located, IS the easternmost of the major inhabited Pacific islands, and closer to South America than any other continent.
But it's still like 3000 miles away (about as far away as Hawaii is from the mainland USA), so the image in the game, which appears to show the South American mainland being visible from Rapa Nui, is still hilariously wrong.

Actually there is a very obscure scene that does make these types of games with the Blitzkrieg engine. This is one of them. Others are Stalingrad, Talvisota: Icy Hell, and some WWI game i forget the name of (pretty sure it was called simply WWI). The Blitzkrieg game is really a niche taste type of game. It is frustrating and janky from a gameplay perspective, but the games themselves are quite well researched and the battles are spectacular most of the time which kinda balances out the jank. That's why it still has a serious (albeit really small) community up to this day.

Penetration system works like this: Each side of vehicle has min to max armor stats. Visible stat is average. Weapon penetration is exact value +/- random value. On successful hit, random value from within armor values is matched with random penetration from within penetration values. Also every vehicle has hidden stat which decides chance to fail enemy hit even if it should hit based on spread and distance (mean to represent how hard it is to hit I guess?).

Oh wow, this is literally just cold-war blitzkrieg. Anyway, too bad it seems they worsened resupplly mechanics; they had a winning formula with blitzkrieg 2. Having played it and its expannsion, Fall of the Reich, i can see how this sort of game-balance will feel really frustrating. Tank fights really do feel, transparently, RNG. You can manipulate them a bit by forcing defensive tactics even while on the offensive, attempting to provoke hostiles to attack you. Infantry in trenches are great for this to draw fire.

The "Chaser/Destroyer" thing is something that oddly enough makes sense to me, as I have seen it before. A naval Destroyer is not called a "Destroyer" in Swedish, but rather a "hunter". And "hunt" is the same word as "chase". Could be something to do with that.

Honestly, it wasn't that bad. It just felt half finished and the ending was like "wtf that's it?" I only completed the Chinese campaign because there wasn't any payoff in completing the other campaigns given the universal ending. The biggest two annoyances in gameplay were the inability to see enemy units at varying elevation and the incredibly easy defense missions. The radiation environmental hazard was also nice until I realized how tedious it was to clear a path and how often the AI would path through radiation patches and kill itself. I put up with the game because of my niche interest in the period and my liking of the blitzkrieg games of the same engine.

I think you're in the same boat as me and many other buyers of the game, in that we liked the concept so much that we were willing to put up with the flaws in the gameplay. It was a very unique idea and having so many period-specific units to play with, as well as feeling like you could go anywhere you wanted on a strategic map while building up and maintaining a persistent army, was worth putting up with the lackluster gameplay.

I remember this game, since I also played it. It was my Blitzkrieg-phase so there we go. Especially the chinese campaign was rather interessing. Mostly because they had an additional resource they could use - manpower. They were the only faction that could reinforce infantry squads. So I basically ordered all my squads to attack a fortified position, put supply trucks slightly behind them and set them to reinforce them and all I could see was infantry trying to rush and dying on mass until the enemy was slowly whittled down, or ran out of ammunition - most of the times it was the latte. Fun times. I also tried modding a bit since tanks like the Abrams were hidden in the files.

I feel like the idea of a "vision" mechanic is actually a really good idea, if only for the fact that these are such huge concepts in real-life wars that go almost completely unrepresented in games for the sake of convenience. The issue with this game is that they neither implemented any sort of conveyance that this mechanic exists or how much you can manipulate it, but also there is absolutely no way to _improve_ your vision. As a result the vision mechanic is not something you have to account for, rather it just remains a handicap. I want someone to make a game that handles this idea better.

The engima engine (used in Blitzkrieg, TDA/CMC/IC, Stalingrad, WW1, Desert Law) is very long in the tooth now. The sad thing is a lot of the issues you described can and have been fixed.
Stalingrad for example fixed the issue with buildings and objects not blocking line of fire. It's a feature easily transplantable back to the original Blitzkrieg. Sadly TDA/CMC/IC is too different, adding radiation and fuel and 3d-mesh based missile based weapon (amongst other things) to port those changes to.
The issues with line of sight being too short, the camouflage problems, AA issues (being too effective, or not enough) are all fixable with XML changes. I've done it myself, albeit on the original Blitzkrieg rather than CMC. I've considered porting my mod to CMC to take advantage of the additional features that version of the game engine offers but as your review shows, there are just too many downsides.
TLDR, all the issues you mentioned could have so easily been fixed with proper playtesting, porting over features from Stalingrad and XML tweaks. They just couldn't be bothered.

Good review, brings back memories.. got this game for my 8th birthday and finished it albeit with cheats, gonna redownload it and give it a go, if i manage to find it, I personally love it but because of nostalgia mostly
Btw if i remember correctly you can use + and - to speed up or slow down the game, so you can avoid the bad traction of wheeled vehicles on snow or desert maps, doing so you will be able to finish the filler defensive missions in literally 30 seconds because the game can go up to +10 speed, just set your infantry in defensive structures and trenches to counter tanks, if it fails just replay it since it takes little time because of the speed up

I remember this game and I loved it...16 years ago. I recall playing filler and scenario missions, spending resource points, planning on the strategic map.
I can imagine that this game feels bad now for a grown up person, but back then for a teenager it was perfect.
You rightly pointed out to the features that pissed me off, like nonsense with aviation and refuelling. Strangely enough you didn't mention ATGMs in Ice Crusade DLC - it was quite an innovative mechanics in strategy games those days, but their implementation made it very hard to use tanks.
Actually this game is based on famous Blitzkrieg series, that is WW2 strategy. That's why the game has so many WW2 stuff.
Anyway, thank you for making me remember this wonderful game.
I would like you to make Combat Mission games review. Sounds like you can tarnish them pretty well.

And every time you are attacked on the strategic map when you go to the tactical mode -- you always need to attack. So, on a strategic level, they are attacking you, and you are outnumbered 3 to 1 or even worse. You go into Real-Time mode and YOU need to attack the entrenched position, again, being outnumbered 3 to 1. And AI defense always has the AT and AA Artillery, slaughtering all of your vehicles and aircraft at the sight. At the same time, when you defend your facilities, you have only infantry and light-armored personnel vehicles. That's just not fair.

Believe it or not, this game has a semi-active modding community that makes it into something enjoyable. The most popular mod right now is "Chronicles of Third World War", which greatly expands on the story, available missions and unit roster. For instance, Act 1 of the Soviet campaign is dedicated to performing "police action" in Polish People's Republic that decided to break away from Warsaw Pact (with a little help from Anglo-American expeditionary force), and your starting units are late WW2 surplus (IS-2M, T-44, IL-10M etc). Oh, and the damage model was somewhat fixed, the battles are no longer a coin toss between win and fail.

The game uses the same engine in which the game Stalingrad was made - It is a game inspired by the Sudden Strike and Blitzkrieg series by the looks of it - isomentric artwork meets 3D vehicle units, tanks with actual different armor over front, side and rear and lots of different unit types working together.
But something is a little off - the detail about the camo-effect of static units appears in Stalingrad too.
It's a really good attempt but somehow i cant decide wether just masss-blob strats of methodical working out enemy positions is the most effective and or enjoyble way to make the game work.

You didn't mention it but when defending random facilities the ai also gets a lot of AT emplacements that the player doesn't get when defending meaning your garrison consists solely of infantry squads and is expected to fend off tank hordes with shoulder carried AT weaponry or the tanks getting too close. The Ai being what it is this actually works somehow but is a pain to do because it takes a while and you can't autoresolve.
Also aircraft wise the only plane really worth using are fighter bombers because they do more damage, stay on for longer and can and will single handedly clear pretty much any mission where SAM sites aren't in play and those to my knowledge only show up in some story missions. Other aircraft like level bombers just plain can't compete.

Looks like translator decided that "tank fighter" would sound retarded and sticks to older term for "fighter" part of the "fighter plane" that is "chaser" plane. Translator was professional in linguistics but unaccustomed to military terminology, it seems.

This reminds me, graphically, very strongly of Panzer General 2. It's really surprising that this was all made from the ground up and isn't a mod of that... but then I can't recall if Panzer General 2 had any kind of realtime option. I only played the original PG a ton as a kid, but remember being really impressed with the visual leap taken for the second game. I think my computer was too crappy to run it when it came out, something like that. I would love a total visual update to Panzer General that left the mechanics intact besides some further options etc... like making Norway less of an insane step up in difficulty. It's like it checks that you can beat Poland easily and know what you're doing, and then because of that you get sent to an insanely difficult mission to take Norway... I don't have a problem with the added complexity of the mission, but it shouldn't also require such slim margins to win. Maybe I should check out PG2 all this time later...

Man I loved this game when I was a teen, the one i liked most was Ice Crusade, it started my love of Object 279 :) I never really found it boring, i just thought it was really hard and to be honest I love a crazy concept delivered with a straight face, my biggest issue with Red Alert 3 was that they made it too much of a joke while Red Alert 2 was basically a perfect balance.

Well, the game has very good atmosphere of nuclear apocalypse. I played it quite a lot and sometimes I stop playing because I wanted just listen to music and watch my tanks before most of them will go to tank heaven or tank hell. But the random battles are nuisance. Most of them are almost the same. Even with few tanks enemy had few squads of infantry with rocket launchers and in most situations they will just act passive and wait in ambush. The air forces are essential to defend territories from the enemy incursions (again with few tanks and a bunch of infantry) but they can win a battle in few minutes. It is almost like auto resolve only better. And a big plus is I've learned much about equipment. And I think that USSR, at least on the beginning is really overpowered while in the second US-UK scenario my M48 Patton tanks which are heavier than Soviet MBT/Medium Tanks were massacred by T-54/55. Overall it wasn't bad game.

The interesting unit lists and feeling of freedom that it gave the players, as well as putting the effort into making unique scenario missions, rescued the game from its flawed mechanics for me. I have fond memories of it.

There's a stand alone game that comes in several version- Mars Wars, Doom Wars, UAC wars. They're all the same product really. Its a doom based RTS game, think its a mod of either Warhammer 2 or command and conquer if I had to guess, that's pretty fun and free to download and play. Small file at that. Never really left the alpha stages though.
give it a look sometime its down your alley.

nice vid i only have one problem with everything you said. as a hetzer fan it is everything but Czech it was a German tank developed in Germany the only thing that makes it remotely Czech is it was based off the Czech panzer 38.

It was using the Sudden Strike engine. The same problems are valid to the entire Sudden Strike series.
Use artillery and push slowly, repair and head your units and use spotters.
Thankfully they upgraded the Sudden Strike engine to the Blitzkrieg and that was quite a good game.

I'm not a fan of limited ammo and fuel. While it might be more realistic, having to micromanage each unit is just painful. At least in real life, those units will have the brains to get to refuel and rearm themselves.

Blitzkrieg was a really good game. I've always liked RTS games and my friend recently introduced it to me. It's obviously old and clunky and some game mechanics (particularly line of sight) are kind of broken, but I feel like it provides a pretty realistic take on WW2 era combat.

First of all....the game is good. Much better than most of the modern games. Second....the publisher was full of original ideas with several actually good and original games. I still remember a countless hours spend with Jagged Union. The graphic is a little under the critic but the game is full of fun. Actually, this video reminded me on those games to play them again.....
