Man im glad you made this. I used to tie flys when i was a kid. I just got back into steelhead this year and these in black, white and olive are one of the things im going to stock up on along with trout beads and the couple go to flies like hare's ears, copper johns, sucker spawns, egg sucking leaches and buggers
Hey Bill & Mike - Me and my four boys enjoy your videos and have used your tips and tricks on steelhead, trout fishing with lots of progress. Few days a go we cought our first steelhead on black f jig and just yesterday we cought two steelhead on single bead rig .. Just like to say thank you and keep up the good work and enjoy outdoors ..
I tied a bunch of these in a few different colors but went a size smaller jig head and hook. Crushed the smallmouth and a few rock bass and perch this past weekend. Fished them the same way under a float. Defiantly a lot cheaper than buying pre tied wolly buggers and you get the same or better results. Thanks for the tips!
Awesome and thanks~ I still use the ones you traded with me~ luckily I haven't lost them like I did when we were fishin lol my buddies going to the Catt tomorrow~ wish we could all fish ~have a great one bro!
Just wanted to say that I used your pattern last year and landed a beautiful hen out here in Washington. I'm tying up some new jigs for the opening on 11/1. Thanks!
Just started going for them last winter in Lake Ontario tributaries and Jegs are my definite favorite although I haven't tied any myself yet I've even use crappie magnet Jigs and caught my first steelhead on one then it would be beads and flies! Good video
Thank you guys for sharing this valuable video, yesterday landed four monsters steelhead with exactly the same jig.. Merry Christmas and happy new year ..
excellent video and fishing technique... never tried jigs for steelhead usually flyrod and nymphs, streamers, or spawn, eggs etc... I'l have to try them next time I'm over at oz. thanks
They aren't the prettiest jigs but they do work. I recently got into steelhead fishing while visiting the UP of Michigan. It is addictive!!! I started tying my own jigs and being the perfectionist that I am I am very proud of my jigs. I like black too. I also make olive ones and a variety of different colors like blue, purple, pink, and orange. I will be revisiting the UP in the Spring and you can bet that I will be doing some salmon and steelhead fishing.
Hey Bill! Keep up the content, love watching your videos. You should set up an affiliate link, to purchase the items you use to make these jigs. It would be worth while, and help your subscribers with making the Black F’s. Tight lines buddy, look forward to seeing you out!!
Awesome video on how fun fishing can be... Thanks. I have a jig that I have made called The Fat Bastard. It is a take on the famous fly The Wooly Bugger.
love and appreciate your videos... I'm from the south so only get two weeks for steelhead fishing each year. Can you do a video showing how you collect, cure and store eggs? SeeYa... Thanks!
+Zak Smith hard to say , they both work well under various conditions but i think the black shows up better under water in stained dirty water . jigs seem better later in the season after the salmon are long gone and the trout are feeding on bugs and minnows and other things but i still prefer eggs in faster water and jigs in the slower moving sectins
Hi, thanks for the video, I like this fishing method but here in Spain is not usual. I would like to know how to fish marabou jigs, do you need to move the marabou jig when it is into the water or it is enough if you leave the jig hanging of the bobber without any movement? Many thanks and sorry for my english.
+M Boyd we fish them under a float alternating drifting and jigging them , sometimes drifting with the occasional twitch works best other times a more aggressive swimming jigging action is best
hey I'm new to tying jigs, what is that tool called that you put the string in so it's easier to wrap the string around the shank of the hook? I've looked for them but I don't know the actual name name of the tool. thanks !
me and my brother used to compete tying different jigs seeing which would outfish the other - he had jigs like the superman with a cape on the back but i just named this jig after myself - F is the initial of my last name . so far mine is the best jig in my opinion
and in my opinion as well I tied your jig and it is absolutely amazing! I'm also from West Seneca and watch all of your videos you are indeed the reason for a lot of My Success on the water thanks man
This is great. Looking forward to tying a few. Just a couple questions. I find the wire hooks on Cabelas and some other jigs can be flimsy. Has this been an issue at all with these hard fighting fish? Also, how durable are these materials? Do you have to put a new one on after each fish? I’m thinking you have to have quite a few with you either way. Thanks again.
thanks man , they are flimsy and i do lose the occasional fish but i catch a bunch on a jig before they wear the paint off - i been tying some with the voodoo jig hooks - they seem a lot better and heavier wire for fighting big fish
I've tied dozens of your black f jigs (black and olive, black and white, even black and pink or purple), and I can tell you that black will almost always out fish every other colour. I know that you know this to be true as well. There's just something about its natural look, combined with its ability to stand out and be visible to fish in all conditions that makes it the greatest colour for a marabou jig. Great stuff, btw are you guys getting out anytime soon for some trout fishing? I hear that the action at Burt is starting to heat up.
+TheFisherman78 thanks man , i was at burt the other day GOT SKUNKED . didnt see many being caught at dam of down below either , water was stained but very fishable
+TheFisherman78 dude i caught 1 fish in last 3 trips - after last 2 skunkins i considered giving my gear away and quiting fishing for good but i got out today and hooked 9 or so on a erie trib - feels good to catch a fish again
+Bill & Mikes Angling Adventures jeez man, I haven't been doing well here either . Hooked a few decent ones but there spitting the hook like nothing, even after a solid hook set. Just little smolts with the odd jack mixed in. Last year the run in Oshawa ON was completely DEAD. Hooked 1 fish all fall and winter on about a dozen trips. Hopefully that doesn't happen again. Might be giving Burt a try this Saturday, after what you've told me I'm not so sure yet though LOL.
I don't know if this question has been asked but why wrap the marabou? Wouldn't it be easier just tie it first at the tail end and just wrap the chenille?
Im 16 and live 10 mins from the Waterport dam, and just getting serious into steelhead and brown trout fishing this year. what gram floats do you guys use for bead and jig fishing? Thanks!
Just want to thank you for showing ppl how to tie these jigs. I tied some up and on Thanksgiving weekend the wife caught a good amount of fish on the black. Thanks again keep the awesome videos coming. Tightlines
Two questions. 1. Do you fish the jig close to the bottom (within six inches or so), and 2. Do you jig it under the bottom, or just let it drift and allow the current to impact action to the marabou? Thanks much.
we try the jigs at different depths , sometimes 2' under the float sometimes closer to bottom - mostly we give the jig a couple twitches the let it sit for a few seconds then repeat but we do change things up to see whats working best on a given day
@@BillMikesAnglingAdventures yeah i actually ran out of black marabou so i tied an olive one black jighead yellow eye, crystal flash in the tail and the flashy black chenille the fish hammered it deadly combo for sure
Works of art are supposed to be hung on a wall .... lures are meant to be fished !! I tie flies enough to know and see you did a fantastic job !! (but modesty appreciated ; )
how are you getting fishing to bite this? watch another one of your videos and it looked like you were fishing slack water almost ? you would pop the bonnet every now and again and fish would smack it?
It's all about the strike zone. fish have excellent peripheral vision at the certain depth they"re holding at. When the action of the jig is right they'll move on it. The "steelhead" or salmonid fish group are fish that are attracted by patterning and action more than scent or flavor like that of the bass family. Though steelies love a properly presented spawn sack or minnow during certain times of the year. Hope that helped.
thats cool fishing is not for working but relaxing thanks for getting back to me Im looking at your other videos right now and wanted to ask. you like a fixed float or a sliding float for steel head and trout??
i do like a fixed float as i rarely find steelhead deeper than 6 ft or so except in the lower niagara river where i use the slip float to get down 10 ft and deeper
Great video and even better by showing the catches with the jigs you have made! Beautiful!!
thanks ✌️
Great instructional video Mike. May God bless with many fish in your net for being so generous with your knowledge and sharing. Amherst, N.Y.

If you don't mind me asking, when would you use white jig vs. black jig and when would you use a jig vs. egg sack? Thanks

who needs a whip finisher looks like it works fine I'm going to tie some of those
Br. Mike! What jig vise and tools do You recommend? I'm new to the sport. Also where to get these items?
any vise will do , all i use is scissors, hackle pliers and thread bobbin . any fly shop or tackle store will do

Thanks great vid.. I tied a couple of these with white and olive marabou and had caught one steelhead and lost two others.
good to hear man but not the 2 lost though lol
Hey nice video. What song is this?
Besides the maggot on the jig do you put a scent on the jigs?
i never tried scent but i hear guys say they swear by it
Thanks for the reply. I enjoy your videos
@@tomdeegan9717 Just a warning, oil based scents will kill the action on marabou. I learned the hard way many years ago hahaha.
do you drift these under a float or do a bass/pike style Jig retrieve?
+M Boyd we fish them under a float alternating drifting and jigging them , sometimes drifting with the occasional twitch works best other times a more aggressive swimming jigging action is best
Had a buddy tie some up and brought to shore my biggest brown ever at burt 35 inch brownie on the black f
awesome 👍
What hook sizes accommodate the 1/16 oz and 1/8 0z jig heads?
+Leonid P i'm not sure but here the hook gap can not be wider than 1-2 inch i believe
Leonid P the white are the same but with no chenille body
Do you work the jig the same way(straight retrieve) when using a centerpin? Or do you just give it a few pops as it floats downstream?
just give it a few pops as it floats downstream
hey I'm new to tying jigs, what is that tool called that you put the string in so it's easier to wrap the string around the shank of the hook? I've looked for them but I don't know the actual name name of the tool. thanks !
+Zach Dubravcak i think its a fly bobbin
+Bill & Mikes Angling Adventures thank you! I'll look em up
Do you twitch it a bit on the drift under the bobber or just let it do its thing?
in moderate to faster water i just mainly dead drift , slower water i twitch it every few seconds or so
@@BillMikesAnglingAdventures thanks for the reply

i use the sheffield clear floats in larger size and i add wieght for sacks depending on the current
do you think a okuma celilo 9'6" ML is good for targeting steelhead and occasionally salmon
should be fine for trout & salmon
How do you tie the white
