I agree and that goes with Wild Turkeys products also, both brands make great bourbon but there names, I think has negative connotation of being a cheap brand. Years ago when I heard Four Roses I thought bottom shelf and Wild Turkey was something you drank to get smashed with your college buddies on the weekend, regardless of what you think of the brand names they both make available, premium whiskey.🥃
I haven’t had any bad four roses. My favorite is Single Barrel. I found the Select for $68 at Christmas time and enjoyed this at the holiday gatherings on cold nights with friends around the fireplace. My favorite four roses is the single barrel at $48. I bought a case of 6 and gave 3 as gifts. I have my local ABC store manager checking his shipments for select and hope one day he calls and tells me he has a bottle for me.
Bought this recently, blown away by how much I like it. I had it at the 4r bottling facility tasting in bardstown and thought it was just ok. I was sleeping on it for sure.
This is the best bottle of Four Roses I have. I am not the biggest fan of any of the single barrel bottles I have. Going forward I will be sticking to this one. Cheers!
@@whiskeyisajourney It does make me wonder though, is there inconsistency here? Even with the small batch select. Do I just have an especially good bottle? The tasting was nothing special.
I agree it's a sip it, I just wish it wasn't $57 (NY) out the door! I can get OF 1910 for $1 less. The proof is not to much to have it over ice (dont drink bourbon neat) and is just right in an old fashioned, and the regular Four Roses Small Batch is $20 cheaper and also quite tasty 🥃Cheers!
Just bought a bottle today and it’s a pick every day for me. I haven’t had a bad one yet. I like the single barrel as well. But I only buy the 4-6 floors on the barrel proofs. More flavor. Enjoy!!
When I started drinking bourbon, I wasn’t a fan of four roses, but as my palate has changed over the years, it is one of my favorites. I feel like it is a very polarizing bourbon, much like peated single malt is to scotch whiskey. Keep up the great, straightforward reviews Peter!
Thank you. I felt the same way about Knob Creek. I did not like it when I fist got into whisk(e)y, but now I really like. It's crazy how much my palate has changed over a short period of time.
For me 4 roses small batch select is a sip, but if I can get it at a good price. The last one I had was super good and I drank so much of it. I was a little hung over the next day. It can be very good. The single barrel as well. If I had to choose, though, I agree in getting the small batch select.
I've been wanting to try this one, and it's good to hear that it tends to be more sweet. Agree the floral note is sometimes not the best, but hey, guess they have to stick to the branding. The barrel strength OESK is one I like, but at $55 this one caught my eye and is always available.
Finally bit the bullet and got this. Definitely better than the standard Small Batch. I think it's worth it for the right price - I found it at a local store for $60. I still like the Single Barrel better, but it's solid.
I haven't had the select. I am generally speaking a fan of Four Roses, even their entry level. I will keep my eye open for the select. Additional: I was wrong. I checked my tasting notes. I have had the Select. It was a positive review. As I recall, I got her at Costco for under $60.
There is only regular small batch and occasionally their standard single barrel offering available in my market. I have had a couple of bottles of their single barrel and it was pretty good but the small batch select you reviewed seems have good following and reviews. Cheers Peter.
I’m with you on Four Roses! It’s like a hit or miss for me as well. It’s a skip for me, unless I want to try a new release or some higher end of their lineup and that would be a glass in a bar, as opposed to adding a bottle to my collection. Nice review as you hit it with all these classic Four Roses notes and flavors!
It's a sip it for sure,...but only if you like the high rye mash bill. The small batch select usually edges out any single barrel I've had. I have a couple 6 level single barrels. Both very rich.
I live a few minutes outside Atlanta, and 4 roses select is about 45 dollars. I personally skip it because we get a lot of single barrel store picks that are barrel strength between 127 to 137 proof, and those will run between 85 to 100 dollars, and they're so much better.
I paid a little more for this bottle due to buying it at a local liquor store and not a big box store. I have come to the conclusion that I am not the biggest fan of the Four Roses profile no matter what bottle I have. They are good, but I would reach for something else most of the time. Cheers!
Under $50 at Costco, I'll be keeping this one on the shelf. A great intermediate bourbon for those that had any of the lower priced bourbons and appreciated them and are ready to take the next step in their bourbon journey down the rabbit hole. 6:41
Peter, I am exactly the same! Four Roses is hit and miss with me! I do like this expression! I find this Four Roses to be more sweet than spicy. I can ditch Four Roses at times and other times enjoy it! Hey I am excited about your anniversary lineup!! Hope u r well!! Fab video!!
I bought this a week ago by accident cuz I misread the price, but OH HOW DO I LOVE THIS BOTTLE! I got it at TW for 52 bucks, a bargain, imo. Its juicy bold and spicy.
Agree. I’m the same way vs single barrel. Those are a little too variable for me. I’ve never had any of the single barrel private select recipes. One note I picked up from the small batch select early on was a nuttiness that I couldn’t draw out later in the same bottle.
Nice review, Peter, as usual. Had the 'regular' 4 Roses and the Single Barrel, but haven't tried this one yet. Seems like I should look for a bottle. Congrats on 2 years and over 7k subs. Well deserved.
I am in the same boat. Four roses is too inconsistent for me to enjoy it. I have skipped four roses and moved on to Scotch and Irish whiskey. To each their own, others I know love this brand.
I personally am a little conflicted on Four Roses. Their core lineup is fine, but feels a little limited but the number of single barrels they can have is overwhelming. Not to mention the LEs can have drastically different quality, even though they all use older stocks.
I enjoyed doing a guided tasting at Four Roses to learn about their 10 recipes. But overall, I've never been a big 4🌹fan. That being said, if I'm going to have one, it would be the Select or the Single Barrel. I have one of the cask strength bottles and it's weird.
I have this bottle too but I think it’s a skip for me…..there is a sweet tea/old book note on the nose and palate that I just hits me wrong. I’m more into the woody bourbons like Knob Creek 12 and Baker’s 7. I’ll keep trying this bottle though and see where it takes me.
They have/had it on sale at tge Costco for around $40. I would say if you paid $80, skip it. But I feel that spending 40-50 bucks is a good price for what you're getting.
Everyone says these are so creamy and tasty. The one time i got this btl it was so thin, I was beyond unimpressed... i want to try again but i think for $55 theres a ton of better options.
I have a love hate relationship with Four Roses. This bottle is better than any other bottle I've had. Still not my preference in bourbon, but for Four Roses it's the better bottle. The price I paid is more expensive than the normal price. I think it goes for 10.00 less.
I’ve said this many times before on other channels…. The four roses small batch select might be the most underrated readily available bottle.
Based on what I tasted today I think you could have a good point.
Yes. I really love this one.
Fact!

I am right there with you Dean. Of all the four roses I have this is the bottle I gravitate to the most recently.

I have said this in other comments, but Four Roses is hit or miss for me. I am happy this is a sip for me because other bottles will not be. Cheers!
My 3 buy again to sip it are 100 proof Old Grand-Dad, 90 proof Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey, and 100 proof Early Times. $31 or less for 750 ml.
Early Times is a Liter here for $21. That Bernheim is a hidden gem.
All good values and tasty.

Nuttiness sounds like it would be a good note to pick up in Four Roses. I'll have to see if I can get something like that the next time I have it.
@@whiskeyisajourneyFollow up. Sipping right now. Getting a nutty note. Weird. Mid to late palate. Not sure why it comes and goes.

Select is more consistent than single barrel
Good to know. So far I have not liked any of my single barrels as much as this one. Cheers!
@@whiskeyisajourney That's why your observation made sense to me - select is a blend, so quality is standardized. Single barrel can be a crap shoot.
