    What type of grease/ oil should I buy for vintage lenses?

  • @viewericeberg

    I purchased a 105 2.5 from ebay. The seller stated "no issues" with the glass,but upon on receiving it it was obvious that the lens had been hot. I ended up keeping the lens at a discount ,and even though the inside looks horrible the image is fine.I would love to have it cleaned but it would cost more than I gave for the lens. I know better than to try it myself because the chance of me screwing up a good lens is too great.I'm living with it.

    1:17 That assembly (focus ring + grip ring) actually has another set of helicoids that join them together, that can also get REAL stiff. That part on the pancake I bought would actually lock up below about 55F. Requires some more disassembly to access, clean and re-lubricate it.

    Do you have advice for working on a stiff aperture ring on a Mamiya TLR 65mm f/3.5 lens. It seems to open and close fine, but the ring is difficult ti turn especially closer to wide ope. Thank you for the great work and service that you are providing to vintage camera lovers.

    What would cause a very very stiff zoom ring on a modern lens?

    YUP..... I have a 1980s Nikon Micro Nikkor 55mm F2.8 lens, that focuses like molasses in January. Often I have had thoughts of taking it apart to degrease it some. I'm afraid once I do that, I would never get it back together :-)

    I don’t have a stiff focusing problem. The problem I have is how stiff and tight the lens mount is. I don’t know if that’s just an old lens thing or what

      Video bonus option - 2:12 , just above Uncle Kenny's left thumb, you can see the click detents for the aperture. I'm pretty sure that's a plastic part. File those down, and presto! de-clicked aperture. Of course, it's irreversible. You don't have to dig very far into it, just remove the rear mount (3 screws) and then pull the aperture ring out.

    What if it's too dry in your dry box? Will that cause the grease/lubricant to dry out eventually?

    Bought the 50mm f1.8 identical to this one. Noticed that the focus ring has a little play forward and back (no rotational play though). Focuses perfectly fine. But is this play normal?

  • @timorraiman537

    So, once you clean out the dry grease from the helicoil, what / how do you apply in its place?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  6 лет назад

      MOST smear it in with one finger
      anything else could leave FUZZ which can BIND the helicoil

      What type of grease do you put in? Teflon grease? I saw someone use wet lube for bicycle chains...

    • @Gabez82
      @Gabez82 5 лет назад

      Timor Raiman HELIMAX-XP, Optical & Instrument Helicoid Grease, w/ White Lithium & PTFE, available on ebay, about ~13$ USD.

    Don't you have to wear soft gloves? How do you prevent dust particles entrapment on and on between the lenses? Do you have a Teflon grease?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  8 лет назад

      +Nikolai Tsakov i do have teflon grease
      no on the gloves, you just gotta be careful, even NEW lenses have a hair of dust, no worries :)

      Theoria Apophasis hey man, my nikon 50mm 1.4 has a veru stifd focus ring, is there any way to fix it without dissasembling it? You said heat could cause it, so maybe putting the lens on the freezer for a while?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  7 лет назад

      its dried grease in the helicoil, needs to be taken apart ):

      Theoria Apophasis tks, I'm from brazil, and people who fix photo gear here charge A LOT of money, so, its it to jard to do diy? What sould I do after I dissassemble it? Just remove the grease and re-assemble?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  7 лет назад

      +Theoria Apophasis kind of you to reply sir, i thanked you for the second hand lens choosing guide , i was trying to pick up a tokina 116 from grey market (said to be new) but it has noise in its zoom ring and pics were not sharp either although it looked clean even in screws and glass. I dont really know what could be wrong with it!!
      WHat i wanted to ask was, i am thinking to buying the same lens from US, what would be a cheap and reliable site to buy it and does tokina offer international warranty (i tried to read about it on their website, but honestly im confused )
      Thankyou

    looks like you will fit in very well with us in nikongear, you will find many like minded people there. i believe it is being moderated and ran by bjirn rosslet.

      by the way, you should lubricate (slightly) the aperture column near the end of the video or it will squeak when you focus. this is also true with the smaller 50mm f/1.8s and the GN nikkors.
