  • Sculpture Coralarium
Where Land, Sea and Art collide
Fairmont Hotel, Sirru Fen Fushi, Maldives
The Sculpture Coralarium is situated in the centre of the largest developed coral lagoon in the Maldives, on the island resort of Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi. The artwork by Jason deCaires Taylor is a semi-submerged tidal gallery space that exhibits a series of sculptural artworks on the skyline, inter-tidal waterline and seabed.
As world's first semi submerged tidal Art Gallery it is cube shaped, six metres tall, with its front façade submerged up to median tide of three metres. The design of the walls is based on natural coral structures and is porous to allow the tides, current and marine life to pass through and the structure to “breathe” within its location.

This is/was very beautiful artwork. So creative and looked like it was both educational and environmentally friendly for marine life and the coral. I'm glad we can at least see what it looked like here on youtube.

This is interesting. They story seems to want to make this out to be Islamic extremism ... but another story revealed that it was public sentiment against the "sculpture". I have seen how people can be mobilized against works of arts or statues. I think it is the creepy looking people in this thing that have people weirded out, not necessarily any religious thinking.

    • @wingsuiter2392
      @wingsuiter2392 5 лет назад

Since you appear to believe anything you read, I will try to explain the truth to you. The negative public sentiment in the Maldives was caused by an ignorant warlord who lived over 1200 years ago, who created a fascist ideology from a mixture of plagiarism from Judaism and his own immoral thoughts. He was hell-bent on world domination through the creation and forced spreading of his own fascist ideology. It became a scourge of the Earth that still festers to this day. His name was Muhammad and the ideology is called Islam. To be fair, Christianity is hardly any better and the only reason Judaism is no longer a problem is because all current 12 million living Jews are smart enough to realize their ancestors made up that part about a god and simply remain Jewish because they like the ritual and lifestyle.

Being Muslim in the Maldives is mandated by law which says a lot, the people who have torn this down are your every day Muslim, you dont hear very much about Islamism in the Maldives do you, they might not be a threat but are certainly intolerant of any culture that isnt islamic.
As for islamic art of course thats allowed to be expressed because it affirms Islam as the law, look to charlie hebdo mocking the prophet, some Muslims didn't like that so they killed them for the crime in their eyes of mocking their prophet. nut jobs yes but islamic nut jobs, islamists and everyday Muslims read the same books

@@CyKosis1973 Simply saying something is or isn't true does not make it so. Additiomally, his claim was in regards to a present situation. Your response was arguing something in the past. Do you see how your argument does not track.
Let's assume that Islam in the past was open to free, artistic expression (it was not, to be clear). So assuming this incorrect argument to be true, it in no way proves that Islam is currently open to free expression of any kind.
In fact, I argue that not in the entire history of the ideology has there been any significant example of an openness to free expression within Islam. Islam was imagined by an individual hell-bent (hell is a mythical place, used here in "religionis ironiam") on fascist control, and it is apparent in the plagiarism of Judaism and the disgusting claims he invented on his own.

What a beautiful structure. But how can the sculptor be so naive or ignorant enough to include human figures in this installation. How can one be in that country and not be aware of the cultural sensitivity to any perceived slight to their religion? It's like a Western artist going and painting a Mural on Ayer's Rock then being surprised when the locals object. He should have erected it somewhere where it would have been fully appreciated and not destroyed because of primitive superstition.

You are free to have your opinion, and I'm equally free to call your opinion disgusting.
When you seek both personal and absolute truths, those truths only need be protected by reason and evidence. There is no evidence or reason to support the supposed personal or absolute "truths" suggested by Islam. This is evident by the facist control exerted by any government with an Islamic majority population. This is yet another example among many.
Religious apologetics is the most vial and dangerous thing that we face as a civilization aside from Nuclear Weapons.
I understand from your comment that you are either secular or hold very liberal religious beliefs, but what you need to understand is that Islam (in its current form) will not rest until the entire world is Islam and all infidels are converted it killed. Once the world is under Islamic control, the mere subjugation of non-Muslims will no longer be needed. This is why your apologetics may be more dangerous the the doctrine or the believers themselves.

perhaps you weren't aware that the authorities had previously granted permission to build the structure, and that it was done in consultation and continuous dialogue with them? It took 9 months to build, with both international and local collaborators, so it would have been impossible for them not to be aware of it. Sadly, it seems local politics and religious over sensitivity caused it to be destroyed..what a waste of money, effort, resources and above all artistry.
