- For sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, the ocean is more than a muse - it's an exhibition space and museum. Taylor creates sculptures of human forms and mundane life on land and sinks them to the ocean floor, where they are subsumed by the sea and transformed from lifeless stone into vibrant habitats for corals, crustaceans and other creatures. The result: Enigmatic, haunting and colorful commentaries about our transient existence, the sacredness of the ocean and its breathtaking power of regeneration.

I am a Grenadian and I have snorkeled over our current underwater sculptures, and yes, it is fascinating to see such 'life' underneath the water. I absolutely APPRECIATE the aim of this incentive and how it has created employment, created a new tourism niche and preserves our natural marine environment. I would love to see them add some structures made in the likeness of actual coral reefs.
it's like doing part of the work and letting god finish it for you .. i love this so much
There is something uniquely beautiful about watching nature devour a beautiful piece of art in living color. It echoes the oblivion we all face should we fail to meet the challenges of our modern existence.
art with a purpose and he's contributing to the community. seems like a pretty good guy. amazing project
Thank you, for your love for our oceans and the underwater creatures. Thank you for your absolutely divine artistry. Thanks for caring. Thanks for the most beautiful eco-museums portraying "the symbiosis between humans and nature", a deep inter-relationship that escapes most of humanity. Your visionary work helps humanity recognize the beauty and value both of art and of our oceans. Thanks. I adore your work
This is breathtaking. Imagine how surreal it would be if you happened upon this when diving or something.
This is one of those things people will forget about and find again in 1000 years, thinking it's a miraculous thing to worship gods or something. Can't wait.
+Annemiek Sluijs I don't follow. I understand that sometimes we pray to some sort of deity and it makes you feel relaxed, but this is the work of people. Artists are the ones who made these sculptures. Worshiping those artists should be what happens in 1000 years.
+Harvir Dhindsa You are right, we should still be giving credit to these artists years into the future, but just as we do now with archeological foundings, we tend to explain them as religious items when we can't find another explanation.
A while ago an ancient temple was found submerged underwater in Egypt. Not quite the same as it was an actual place of worship, but it has happened.
+Annemiek Sluijs Nothing this significant will disappear like it has done so unfortunately in previous history. We have the internet now, with millions of petabytes worth of backups all over the world.
+Harvir Dhindsa you missed the point she was making
As an artist this is inspiring on another level. Why have I not heard of this? (There are hotels in the Grand Canyon)
I absolutely loved this video!!! I usually don't get art, but I was so moved by these creations and with what deCaires had to say. It was amazing!!!
Can you imagine a sculpture of a giant hand rising from the bottom to reach the surface? Now that would be cool!
Italy has something like that at their canals search it up !
Sacred is the perfect word. Brilliant vision.
Favourite sculptor ever! Making use of a wonderful space and doing so in a way that benefits said environment. Then watching the piece transform into something even better at the hands of nature makes it that much greater!
so, so beautiful. I hope future civilizations find this and wonder.
+Perplexion Dangerman lmao
+Perplexion Dangerman i swear i thought the samw thing 😂😂
agree
Nature is the artist here!
This guy is awesome and I love the message he is sending and what he is trying to do
Great idea!!!!! A wonderful way to help the marine life and reefs. Absolute beautiful transformation of these sculptures!!!
Concrete isn't toxic, and this kind is even pH neutral. The statues are just as harmless in the ocean as sand and rocks are. As he said, it even provided new habitation. It's not hurting the environment, it's helping
are you replying to someone or just stating the obvious?
Totally agree with u!
@@3rdJose exactly 🤣
Your works will be GOLD centuries from now when many non pf us no longer walks this planet.
Absolutely stunning, can't wait to see them in real life
Planning a dive here with my best buds. Can't wait to see it.
I want to see that ark, oh my goodness, how beautiful. And to see it helping the coral reefs and ocean diversity...that would be amazing.
Do it now,it may soon be too late.
very creative,admiring work .
made us to think to show concern about our precious things
7:46 this whole part has such a powerful message
We are doing a 2 tank dive at MuSA Tuesday. So excited. Thank you 🙏
i am blown away by this work. Surprised i haven't heard of it before

Absolutely breathtaking.

Gorgeous work that carries a very importany message, Thank You !
Very good presentation! The underwater sculptures look absolutely amazing!
We need to plan another trip to Lanzarote soon :)
Thanks for sharing!
OH MY GOSH THIS IS MAGNIFICENT
this is great, more of it please! (:
This statement is of sound body and mind and directed to Mr. Taylor, supporters of a museum like this, scientists, ecological experts etc.
Having a different view of life/afterlife/quality of life/burial etc. I was wondering whether someone's human remains, could if bequethed to this project, be incorporated in similar installations (where like those left to scientific research are being used to study decomposition/composting?) as both nutrients for plant/animal/ocean life as well as a foundation similar to those you create (in the donors case skeletal system) as a foundation for coral/algae growth etc?
Obviously this is not for the squemish, nor anyone unable to accept their mortality, just an honest inquiry by someone intrigued and inspired and willing to "give back" to the ocean of life...
Thank you for this video, this Art, this respect for life, yours, mine, everyone's, OUR WORLD - OUR OCEAN - NURTURE - NATURE.
Beautiful in so many ways ❤ thank you
Reminds me of Morrowind and Boethiah's Shrine..I need to play that game again
Şahane,müthiş,olağanüstü.Türkiye'den selamlar.
Incredible!! Added to list of things I must see before I die! :)
This is amazing!
it´s different and it´s good for the for the environment. GREAT
+João Martins
I guess you could do better with the resources than building statues...
+TheAnnoyingGunner he could also do nothing...
+TheAnnoyingGunner he's an artist. He isn't a scientist. This is not only his art, but a way to help the environment. You can't expect an artist to spend his time doing scientific research. He's helping the way that he knows how.
Meg Alyssa
You don't have to be a scientist to do some research. Yah, research, not research, stupid language that can't differentiate those two... But I prefer his statues over some daub of Pollock or Picasso, that's for sure.
+TheAnnoyingGunner i don't actually, don't get me wrong, i love it, but it doesn't teach me anything i didn't already know. Just the mere fact people are still upset Pollock or Picasso is art already proves how much more intellectually valuable the genius work of Pollock or Picasso is. I honestly didn't need these sculptures, I understand how it helps the ignorant, but I get the same aweinspiring spiritual buzz out of watching a plain nature docu. Artistically speaking this artist is totally forgettable, just a nice idealist making pretty pictures.
Terrifying, beautiful, awesome.
I would love to travel through an underground museums
Absolutely beautiful
I LOVE IT!!!
Wow! so beautiful.
i’m here bc of my teacher 😐

Simply amazing!!!!
Awesome work!!
1. Explain his reasons for exhibiting in the sea rather than on land?
2. In what way did Jacques Cousteau influence Taylor?
3. How does he alter his process to for displaying under water?
4. Describe how his art effects the local community and environment?
5. Does his work inform us about ourselves in any way? explain
6. Do you have a favorite work by Jason deCaires? Describe in detail your personal responses to his Sculptures.
7. Have you ever been inspired to create something because of something you experienced? Please describe in detail what has inspired you & how it has influenced your thinking/creativity? Can yall help me please

I'm here just for my homework.
Wonderful. Wonderful idea and it looks wonderful. They should do more of it athough there will be a great deal more exhibits thanks to climate Change.
I just saw a nightly news report on your sculptures. I mean, 200 tones of cement!
Big Fan. Would like to get more involved.
It is nice job buddy , you are most well come at Bangladesh.
now i just think it is so beautiful
OTG!I thought I was the only one...kinda creepy😵
and thousands of yars later, if humanity or earth survives, we will think there were an Atlantis drown under the sea ... this is a beautiful trace to leave to the future... i VE always thought that unlike previous civilisations we don't have real monuments: internet and hi tech doesn t compare to pyramids or ...
idk why but these sculptures kinda creep me out...
Ikr
That’s what I said !
No seriously tho
Because they are ugly. He could have done beautiful things, but chose really ugly subjects.
Justine stfu

How did you overcome the nay sayers and self doubts to begin these sculptures? How were your initial sculptures financed, please?
💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Cool but why the ark man?
you know what i like to see underwater a dragon i hope you make something like that you a lot of people but not animals make a horse then it a sea horse
i understand that these GREAT Sculptures have a meaningful purpose. but it's too bad they can't be easily seen.
you have to dive into the ocean to see them.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Senseless.
What are those people doing under water?
Alterior Motive ?? I reflected on this and initially was amazed, but everyone should read ALL the comments first before doing so themselves, as there are several detractors on here making very good points and questioning the validity of these sculptures. "Dynamiting seabeds, relocating poor local inhabitants, illegal ports, etc.....". Not everything is what it seems.
He says he does it for ecology, for nature, for justice ... and yet he does the opposite, he does it in an illegal port built by throwing people from their homes, built by dynamiting the seabed. And it does it against the opinion of its inhabitants, in an illegal place, paid by the Government, without transparency, hiding the information.
anyone excited about the noahs ark musuem ....that would blow my mid take my money now
underwater WW2 monument ftw?
+Aaron Dewhurst
Why not, much WW2, much underwater.
기후 변화로 사회 저소득 국가의 지불 비용 부담은 더 늘어나게 된다고 하는군요
과거의 관행을 멈추는 방법은 강력한 벌금 서비스가 아닐까? 생각합니다. 🧠
I cant read but im sure you said im hot
I can read, and its saying how this man has found a clever way of drawing attention to himself and making money. You're welcome
As if there is not enough harm humans made on actual earth, now they move under the sea. The ocean is stunning without all this manly creation. I am sure it does no just for the living world of waters as well. Vile project.
+Bradan Domhnull You are misguided, friend. These sculptures encourage the growth of corals. We need as much as we can get with all the corals dying off everywhere. They also help to move toward the goal the presenter described-sanctifying the oceans. This project is doing nothing but good for the oceans.
As an aside, just because it is a creation of man does not mean it is good. Similarly, just because something is natural does not mean it is good.
+Kronimiciad he must have ADD and could not get thru after 45 seconds of the video because commercials tend to last that long as does his mental capacity
I'm glad you'll fascinating with Moors/Israelites formerly know as Blacks People.... We're true people of Jah!!!! Can't cover this up about our ancestors!!! Jah said called firmament
" Heaven" under the water. Created Ahyash ( Adam) and Asha (Eve) Love my Beautiful Brown Sisters and Brothers.
Meanwhile, Bieber's latest video just hit 500,000,000 views...
make sure you keep count...
I think you should tell people the real reason why you did this.
ugly scenes of this underwater museum reminds about rests of people... which brings thoughts further into bad sad direction. it is just SPOILING OF NATURE. what for?
plenty worlds in about 50 years most of those sculptures will be completely covered with coral and sea life, so I don't see a problem with it
what the !! very baad idia and sick
Too much of the person in the video and talk, like a sales commercial.... Make it more journey of pictures images
0:44 Can you explain what does it mean? "One sculpture became too, too quickly became 26." Does it means other people make a sculpture and place it there? Or Taylor make more sculpture? What does it mean?
