  • Artist Jason deCaires Taylor builds breathtaking underwater sculptures that double as artificial coral reefs. Watch as his newest work, "Ocean Atlas," a massive, 60-ton sculpture that reaches from the sea floor to the surface, gets deployed and installed off the coast of the Bahamas.

Everyone is getting upset about this, But I must say, These sculptures are absolutely breathe taking! I couldn't imagine the time that goes into these pieces of art, I adore the fact that they're giving them a bigger canvas to work on by putting them in the ocean! Honestly, if I saw one of those sculptures while scuba-diving I'd be quite scared because of how life like they look, But entirely mesmerized due to the beauty it beholds under the clear blue sea. Beautiful, Stunning work!

The reason why you build these statues is to create an artificial reef in a places that have had the original reef destroyed. If you go to 7:25 you can see two "reef balls" at the base of the statue, that's what artificial reefs normally look like. It's a little boring. What Jason DeCaires Taylor is doing is blending this idea with art. These statues help the ocean by allowing coral and sponges to attach somewhere where there is nothing. They won't attach to sand. Eventually, this will become a new coral reef, and the statues will all be gone. In the meantime though, it attracts tourists interested in seeing is art, and money is generated to protect the oceans. Nothing about this is a bad thing.

Reminds me of Damien Hirst's Treasures from the Wreck of The Unbelievable, with some good meaning behind it. Really cool work!

Why is this on Vice Asia when it's literally about the Bahamas? It's super interesting and I'm glad to hear about blending art & conservation but surely this is the wrong channel for it?

So many idiots here who are typing the planet is dying while this guy is creating value in a sea bed that has been exploited and creating new habitats for corals and fishes to thrive and because now that it's an art piece you can bet it won't be vandalized by humans thinking nature is all for the taking. Honestly this is brilliant.

I have mixed feelings regarding this. Although what he does it's very original and see those sculptures in the sea must be breathtaking, I think we should preserve wild spaces without leaving human traces behind. There must be another way to help marine life develop in those areas. Then, I'd like to know what the primary motive is, to attract visitors or protect marine life? because they oppose one another.

Why can't people just leave the natural world the hell alone? Why can't people just *stop* ?
