Edit: I know the flag for Austria-Hungary I used is technically just their civil ensign. It was the closest thing to a state flag I could use to represent the entire empire.
Gotta love leftover feudalism! Keep in mind that these are the CONSTITUENT lands, and many of them were divided into further duchies, principalities, or locally autonomous areas, but I can only show so much at the same time. Enjoy!

Wait, so what even is the difference between a civil ensign and an actual official state flag? Is it something about its use - civilian vs. governmental/military? If so, then, f.eks, what did Austro-Hungarian soldiers use as their flag during ww1?

I don't know why this become such big debate recently, since you can argue most flags throughout history used to represent certain countries, aren't what we would today consider national flags or were used for different purposes.

    Great video as always!
However, there is one misleading thing in the infobox on the right, which is the use of Austria-Hungary's civil ensign (i.e. the flag containing the colors of modern austrian and hungarian flag and their respective coats of arms, which in reality was used only by civilian and merchant ships). Here's a video explaining the problem with the civil ensign: ruclips.net/video/HgvB9aW98z8/видео.htmlsi=etqsJmXXDtdYquL0
Also, there is a small error with the map, and that is the fact that Bosnia and Herzegovina had a second corridor to the Adriatic Sea located where now the border between Croatia and Montenegro exists. It existed as administrative boundary until 1940's, when it was transferred to Montenegro (as part of Yugoslavia).

Very very very (very) technically, there never was an 'Austrian Empire'. Which sounds like an odd thing to state, but in German, the term 'Kaiserreich Osterreich', which would literally mean 'Empire of Austria' was never used, and the term 'Kaiserstum Osterreich' (which is used in this video) was intentionally used instead. 'Kaiserstum' has no direct translation in English-it would roughly mean something like 'Emperordom of Austria', and this is the term used in the 1848 constitution.
The reason 'Kaiserreich Osterreich' was never used-not even after the Ausgleich of 1867; was twofold: first, the Czech and Polish nobility and estates (parliaments) within the Austrian half of the Empire were opposed to any such naming, and the second is because it was never meant to refer to a ruler of a notional Austrian state, but, like the title of 'German Emperor', sort-of referred to his dynasty rather than the state he ruled-the House of Habsburg-Lorraine was the 'House of Austria'.
After 1867, the *very* unwieldy name 'The Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council' (ie, the Parliament of the Austrian half of the Empire) was the consistent official name, and it wasn't until 1915 that a rescript from the Emperor okayed the formal use of the term 'Austria' (note no descriptor like 'Empire/Kaiserreich'-just 'Austria' alone) for the first time.

About the possibility of reforming the Habsburg Empire: The Habsburg Empire would not survive the necessary reforms, the Hungarians would not accept lowering their status within the empire, no matter what, and it would be simply treason to try to take away Hungarian privileges even if Austria-Hungary had been on the winning side of WW1, because it would be the same as spitting on all Hungarian sacrifices. And there is also the issue of the Germans, while the old regime reigned, the monarch and the nobility did not care about the nationality of the subjects, but if you make a reform to give equal rights to anyone, this becomes more relevant, because any reform in Austria would be the same as removing the position of dominance of the Austrian Germans, something that would be somewhat manageable if the overwhelming shadow of the German Reich did not exist, give the relative small numbers of Austrians Germans on the empire, but that is not the case, the Austrian Germans accepted the old regime in exchange for privileges within the empire, but lowering them to the level of the like the Czechs? A comprehensive reform of the Habsburg Empire would be seen as a betrayal by both the Austrian Germans and Hungarian nationalities, reform was good for the monarchy and for the ideia of the "empire", but not everyone was be better of for it. The Hungarians would declare independence, and the Germans would cry out for Anchluss with the German Reich, so no, the Habsburg Empire is impossible to reform in the age of nationalism, and the old regime will not survive until an Liberal age came forth.

The Hungarians actually did accept a Triple Monarchy in October 1918 after some hesistation, but it was too late then. And no, the idea of an Anschluss was never popular among the Austrian elites until the Habsburg Monarchy collapsed. The Habsburg Empire had *much better* chances to survive than Russia or the Ottoman Empire.
