The pure shame is how much context has been lost with time too. Knox does the best job reacting to early Em but he experienced it all firsthand so obviously he knows the context since he lived it. Same with Cliff. I’d say on probably 95% of reactions to anything from SSLP/MMLP/TES I always find myself wishing it was possible to convey everything going on at the time because it’s literally impossible to fully appreciate his early work unless you understand the context but it’s practically impossible to convey now.
Ironically, TES contains maybe the greatest example in Em’s entire discography. The literal first thing people heard on imo his best album ever were jet sounds in a song he was telling the government to fuck off… EIGHT MONTHS after 9/11 😂😂 like even if someone explained that to you it’s simply impossible to process the true gravity of that without living through it lol

Yeah. Em is a dope producer. Lot of ppl don’t know that. He says he’d rather rap, but when he produces, it’s dope. So many of his best beats are ones he made. And, arguably, one of the most iconic beats (Renegade), he made too. Em’s flow is married to that beat so well it seems he made the lyrics and beat simultaneously. Which is nuckin futs!

born 1989 - this Eminem album released just I started falling deeply in love with music, poetry, and the magical power of the spoken word. Its # 1 for me, and always will be. Later in life I spent some time studying the intricacies of linguistics, and found it to be a true passion. It has made me completely captivated by Eminem's modern music, he consistently dose things to the English language that is truly revolutionary. But no amount of syllable and rhyme pattern mastery will ever be able to replace the emotional attachment he was able to make with this album. And no other album since will come close. - My humble opinion.... Great review! your energy was infectious. Keep of the good work.

There’s so many clever comments about niche pop culture moments from the time across this record, it’s almost like a time machine glimpse into the public hivemind of the time. Em’s rapping was probably at its peak around this time, able to fluently switch between serious and Shady personas. After this album there was a noticeable change in him accepting and coming to terms with his A+ list celebrity status, which was evident in his approach to his music after this. Feeling more comfortable, he went back to his horrorcore style that he started out with and experimented harder with wacky beats and lyrics, with varying degrees of success up until MMLP2.

He was dealing with charges and felonies between MMLP and this album after he ran up on a club bouncer when he saw him kissing Kim outside, and punched him and they scuffled until Em pulled out a gun and pistol whipped him over the head with it and fucked him up but the gun was unloaded. That’s what he talks about in cleanin out my closet where he says “the smartest shit I did was take the bullets outa that gun, cuz I’d of killed them, shit I woulda shot Kim and them both”, and later what he also mentions in Soldier when he says “pistol whip a motherfuckin bouncers six two” because the bouncer was 6’2”. Also mentions it in sing for the moment when he says “you’re full of shit too guerrera, that was a fist that hit you!” That’s the bouncer who sued him for the pistol whipping. He got lucky not having bullets in the gun otherwise he might’ve gone to prison. But even though he says the dude was full of shit and it was his fist, he definitely did pistol whip the dude 😂 so I think he’s joking there. But also in the song Hailie’s song, he says “here’s what I’m facing, three felonies, six years of probation” which he also talks about the whole incident going down in Saying Goodbye Hollywood, and that’s why he was basically saying goodbye and was planning to go on a hiatus and just deal with probation and being a father and take a step back from the spotlight because it was making him do crazy shit lol. That’s not the only time he got charged for gun related shit and also a time that his former security talked about him pulling a gun on him when he came to Eminem’s house to get a paycheck after he was fired. Eminem apparently aimed it at the dude from his door and wouldn’t put the gun down and the former security showed his gun too but Em didn’t give a fuck and told him he’ll shout him lol. Bug they ended up talking it out and Eminem got the dude his money. There was another incident that ICP themselves talked about in an interview where they said Eminem actually pulled a gun on a couple of the members of ICP outside of a club one time and think was arrested that night because of that. Eminem was crazy back in the day. Probably had a lot to do with his pill addiction at the time though.

I’m American, Texan, Houstonian, white, female, and was 15 in the year 2000. Eminem was such a fucking big deal in the controversy of all of my teen years. Not necessarily to my family, but to others it was like this is dangerous. It was what are our kids listening to? Corrupting the youth! That’s when parental advisory stickers had to be placed on CDs and Walmart stopped selling anything with cuss words. Making him bigger than ever of course

When solider is playing, how can you say “is this the first Eminem song I’ve liked?”
When you’ve literally loved every tune prior to it from the album, not to mention the countless songs you’ve liked from his previous albums, just a strange comment that’s all😅

Great reaction. You said was em with Mariah? She released a song called "obsessed" aimed at em. He fired back with 'THE WARNING' where he fkin DESTROYS her (and nick cannon). You MUST react to it asap! Keep doing what your doing.

After this album he moved back to Detroit, and became a recluse to raise his kids, he made a cd a year just about but he treats it as a 9-5 he's in the studio 9 am to 5pm and goes home to his kids... its all real shit... its an amazing album...

Fun fact when this CD first dropped almost all the parents wouldn't get it for their kids in my high school. So I burned like 50 CDs and handed them out for free to any kid that wanted one. I made sure everyone in my high school herd this absolute banger of an album.

His line in Til I collapse about amoxicillin not being real enough is insane bc it is literally a man-made medication that mimics Penicillin, which is a natural byproduct of fungi. This man is truly a genius.

I think it’s tough not to shoot your shot too early on hip hop songs, but Em writes these perfectly like an author, having the third verse of almost every track be the climax of the song and go absolutely nuts.
