- I mean, at least the names aren't hard to pronounce like Seeker's or all have the same starting letter like Erth Dragons. (shivers)

I always maintain that whirlpool didn't deserve a name that cool
THIS IS SO REAL I HATE IT SO MUCH
Fr! He's my least favorite character, Tui should've named him Weed or smtn and saved the name for someone cooler.
@@ThePissling ngl seaweed would have been a perfect name for his slimy ass
should’ve named him sea cucumber
Yeah!
Fun fact: There is a canon Warrior cats character named Icewing.
Hopefully that will become new leading of riverclan
There's also a character named Nightwing
@@faraskye7362 Are they the enemy of Icewing? Because that would be hilarious lol
@@onythecandlefox unfortunately, they are not alive at the same time 😔
i noticed that and started laughing for 5 minuets straite
Hey the names in these books are by far the easiest names I’ve ever had to remember in any series with hundreds of characters in it. I’ll take it over fancy elven or rough dwarven or wild futuristic names any day.
I agree with.
ITS ANOTHER ONE OF TRICKYTALON'S CLONES
Like JOANANANANANANANANANANANA?
There are hundreds of possible names for each of the tribes. Landmarks of their kingdom; animals that are found in their environment; colours of their scales or the element that's associated with them.
The NightWings even have a unique naming system and the RainWings keep a list.
We won't be running out any time soon.
To cut the books some slack, they do have one of the easiest naming systems to remember. If running out of names, all they have to do is be creative, use more uncommon words like Vaquita, Dustdevil or Foxfire.
Also, forgive my nit-pickings, but you said Cottonmouth's name as Rattlesnake again
OOOHH! I actually have an Icewing named Foxfire! giggles kicks feet
If the IceWings living in We-Venerate-Caribou give themselves surnames, the only on-point one that aligns with lore would be 'Caribou'. Caribou Caribou, who lives in We-Venerate-Caribou would be PERFECT. XD
I usually just spend an unnecessary amount of time naming characters by looking up scientific names or specific species that look or act like my character. For example, I have an oc called Izula, she’s a hivewing named after the scientific name for bullet ant. It’s actually a lot of fun trying to use interesting color, animal, or plant names in a different way. I recommend it if you need a unique name idea.
It's been a while since we've seen a dragon called Hvitur, If there were a new book protagonist with that name, I doubt anyone would be confused.
as a certified hvitur fan, our numbers may be small but we are dedicated
@@Rhyxelzwho was Hvitur again?
@@nollaigburke7982 he was the icewing from the prologue of book 1, he was supposed to bring the skywing egg to the talons of peace but burn killed them both (that part was not included in the graphic novels)
@@laceys_funtime ah ok,it has been a while since I read book 1
Could definitely get another Asha, a Sparrow wouldn’t hurt, nobody’s ever heard of Harrier- just reuse the background characters!
It could be just me who thinks it will be hilarious if we had a seawing named Phoque (Seal in French), I think being able to use words from languages that aren't English can help with the naming issue and I personally have WoF ocs that have names that aren't an English word.
We already have Tsunami, so other languages are definitely on the table.
Don’t even do seal in French do anything else! Hear yourself when you say that
@@siobhannoble8545 and i think hvitur is just the word “white” in another language
I keep forgetting about the naming system sighs. I have a Nightwing named Pluto named after the mythological figure. I literally used the scientific name for an African Wild dog for my Sandwing.
I am also planning to name another Nightwing Hearthstone after the Magnus Chase character. I just go “If it makes sense then it is a name for a Wings of Fire dragon”
I love AWDs!
So, uhh that’s why I had to name my silkwing Clarisight.
Feels illegal to be so early lol! My thoughts are that if humans can have the same names, then so can dragons. I do agree that the names do get a bit confusing and repetitive, but overall I think having names as a lineage (kind of like warrior cats) would be cool! Caribou names are cannon, so maybe there’s a few sky wings named Scarlet. Great video as always
You have forgotten that there’s a reason why last names and even middle names existed. Dragons have no such system. Not to mention that English names aren’t the only names used by humans. Remember that we have more than a thousand languages.
Yeah, they might mean the same things at times, but they sound different which cancels out the fact they would be the same name should they be the said language.
I've always thought about what if the characters from WoF had last names and I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought of this
Agreed. Also I really think they should've had different naming conventions for the human characters to distinguish them more from the dragons
For my own fan tribe, I gave them a simple system: their last names are combinations of those of their parents. Simple yet effective.
Good thinking, although one of my dragons would’ve been named instead of Horizon, I know that’s a real Wings of Fire name, but there’s no way you can recognize both of them. So they would be named. SandWaveProph or something like ProphetSawave
Haha sunny thornmover

My Skywing OC Sunset lives in a small castle called Hyflyer Keep, so I imagine she would take that as a last name.
Realistically, there are many people with similar names, but there could be maybe different spellings in the books for others named the same? But last names complicate things for me-
I do like the idea of titles like Noble Monarch or Bookkeeper, though the noble title would fit close friends of the queens, not "this dragon was noble"
This isnt meant to be rude at all, just my thoughts.
Clicked for Snowfall, stayed for the rant
Just the names of there parents combined into one thing
Maybe they could work like the MLP naming scheme? Like where ponies take a second word to complete their name, and may pass it down generations. I just feel that just taking a dragon's last name from the place they live or from some other object/animal sounds a little unwieldy when said aloud, like "Hope Sapphire".
How about they add more hybrids and when they have a hybrid they name it something like:
If it’s a seawing-icewings, maybe MeltingIce? Or FrozenSea.
Skywing-mudwing, maybe Mudskipper or MarshFire?
This could be my current interests speaking, but maybe naming could be inspired by sci-fi avatar? The na'vi do have a unique naming system! For example, Neytiri's name is Neytiri Te Tskaha Mo'at'ite, which means "Neytiri, daughter of Mo'at".
So maybe we can do names like, for example, Cliff Son of (Queen) Ruby or Moonwatcher Daughter of Secretkeeper? Note that sons usually take the father's name, such as Tsu'tey's last name being Ateyitan based on his father's name Ateyo.
Over all, i just like the na'vi naming system because of how useful it is to track families and keep them unique lol
i didn't even know wings of fire had 464 characters- thatsalot-
Ooo, I am in love with this idea!
Haven’t watch the video yet, but I think it would be interesting if a character decided that they don’t like their name, and want to change it to anything. This could make all the queens agree to make dragon mother/fathers be able to name their dragonets anything. It would be harder for the author to keep track, but it solves a way more vital issue.
this is what I thought about when writing my book & adding my characters, I usually try something with latin versions of different elements including the wings of fire type names I like to include all sorts of things
pfft younger me named my sandwing oc “Trixie” which literally means bringer of joy. I went against the system LOL
Honestly, Tui just has to be more creative with names and stop making duplicates. There are plenty of available names that make sense, just waiting to be assigned to a character. It's a pretty simple fix imo.
On the last names thing, some ppl got their last name from who their father was (eg johnson) so maybe in wof there could be dragons with names like Cliff Rubyson or Ostrich Sixclaws
It's hard for me to come up with my OCs names ( night/sand/ice hybrid, a mud/ice hybrid and rain/night) I would give the last name something like wingless or something
Nightwing names are sometimes a little like warrior cats names
A few I did was (these are weird, but the way, just random things I came up with):
Darkstalker legends
Clearsight Reuwan
Darkstalker Shyona
Foeslayer Shyona
Arctic Gracious
Whiteout Shyona
Listener Foxfire (not sure about this one)
Thoughtful Free/Shyona (I headcanon he would have taken Whiteout’s last name if dragons had them)
Fathom Vast (original last name was Seastar but he took Indigos)
Indigo Vast
Arc 1
Clay Terrain
Tsunami Seastar
Glory Morning-Majesty (not very happy w/ this but I like both words because Morning hints to Morning Glory, which is Glory’s name! Buuuuttt idk, any better ideas?)
Starflight 107 (last name is their family status, dumb ik but i was thinking outside the box)
Sunny Solarstar (I think Thorn never had a last name that she could remember, so she took one based on her daughter and true love)
Might do arc 2 and arc 3 later!
but there are like names that ppl use like Moonlight or Sunset that get sooo over-used
Sounds logical if done right good idea 😊
Do keep in mind that there is many names out in the world that would be perfect for new characters. For example, species names, like my main OC Andrias/Japonicus, which Andrias is a genus of giant salamanders and Japonicus is the species from the andrias family.
There are SO many other words related to environments, colors, etc. You just gotta do research. I could say so many diverse names for new characters, but I will not because this is already so long lmao
So I believe that Sutherland should find new names from the billions upon billions of words. Last names would be actually great, I'm not sure how marriage works for dragons yet, but it would be cool to find out.
I think matronyms/patronyms would be cool to see
I love this

do you… like the books? by any chance? like at all? it’s an easy to understand system because the books are for middle schoolers. sometimes people in real life are named the same thing as another person! that’s okay to do in writing as well, as long as you dont have 3 tsunamis running around per book
But like why make scavengers have the same naming theme and take good Dragon names?
i do like this idea, i don't like characters having the same name. Yes, in real life humans do have the same name, but.. there isn't as much characters as there are humans. (well, course not. that would mean there would be over a billion characters, can you imagine that?) point is, i don't think names should be repeated in wings of fire, but i do like that they are easy to remember
my first oc's name (Before I read the books bc my sib told me ab it) was named Horizon, as in the first Sandwing to be noted to die from Peril in book one, I named them that because they where a Sandwing/Skywing/Nightwing trybrid. threw many stages of development on my main oc, they became a Sandwing/Nightwing hybrid only, threw another stage i renamed them to Crecent, and gave them a Crecent moon shaped marking on their head near their eye. they are currently my main oc, the newest oc I've made is named Tetra and is a red and blue seawing, looking like a Tetra fish. If you disagree with my design choice then why? if Anenome can have light blue and pink scales why cant my oc have blue and red scales when ppl always talk ab Anenome and Albatross having "Lighter than normal" scales, prob bc of pigment loss, what is a color darker than pink? Red wich makes it reasonable.
I imagine it wouldn't just be place names or jobs. But dragonets might also take the name of one of their parents as a surname, too, if said parent is particularly famous.
For instance, if one day there are multiple dragonets in the Jade Mountain Academy called Firefly, then Glory / Deathbringer's daughter (from a Darkstalker vision in Moon Rising) would be called Firefly Gloria.
Perhaps to make it extra exotic to western readers one of the tribes could frontload their surnames... If anyone were to do it like that then I think it would be the Icewings, given how much they have traditionally devoted themselves to the seven circle rankings and their roles in society over any individuality, frontloading their surnames might be a substitute for the "gift of order"?
My oc's name would be Hummingbird Healer!
Not even Warriors is safe! There already are 2 Frecklewishes...
My ocs name ➕ last name equals : Flake snowstorm ; )
0:38 I mean.... it's realistic.
I actually didn't notice all the doubles of names except the bullfrogs I don't really think the naming is a problem for me though and I think it would be fine for maybe one off background characters if they would accidently have the same name
You know, I’m quite surprised Tumbleweed hasn’t been used yet (unless it has . . . ?)
One of my OCs is named Tumbleweed. I also have a Pebble, Dawn, Sunstone, Silverfish, Bloodstone, Amber, and Aurora. I don’t . . . Think those are used yet?
I suspect the reason dragons don't need to bother with extraneous identifiers is that they're unable to maintain a large population by their very nature.
They are, bar the Rainwings, hunters, after all.
Even the Rainwings seem to be foragers, lacking any agricultural focus. What few examples we have seem to be mostly exceptions, rather than a primary means of food procurement.
We don't see much of anything at all suggesting animal husbandry. Most I recall is with Scavengers, and that didn't seem with the interest of breeding a stable food population.
I wager the kingdoms are numbered at most in the thousands, dependant on their regions. Only the Icewings seem capable of supporting greater numbers, thanks to their gift which i forget the name of, which gives free food to those who need it. And then, they only seem to worry about the noble houses, when it comes to names, anyway.
I think that Tui should just learn new words lol. Do more research! Need SeaWings? Look up different species of a fish! Need an IceWing? What are all the different types of ice structures? MudWings? Look up types of frogs! My favorite website to use for this is reverse dictionary.
Some examples I found are:
Caribou
- Carideer
- Reindeer
- Antler
- Rangiferine
Lagoon
- Atoll
- Lagune
Crane
- Demoiselle (found a SeaWing name)
- Trumpeter
- Pinion
Eagle
- Harpy
- Erne
- Aquila
And then some names I personally like are:
Archipelago (SeaWing)
Dugong (SeaWing)
Rhubarb (LeafWing)
Mallard (MudWing)
Floe (IceWing)
Hummingbird (RainWing)
Oriole (SkyWing)
Bayou (MudWing)
I have an Icewing's OC named Moraine.
("an accumulation of earth and stones carried and finally deposited by a glacier" is the definition of it XD)
@@cookie856 i love that name! Like I said Tui needs to learn more words and this is a great example of that
