    It took me a long time to figure out when and how his relationship with Meredith happened. He wrote about her in his book but he left out the one little detail that he met her when he was 13 years old. It wasn’t until the Elliot Mintz tapes that it came together for me. The first time I listened to it I didn’t pick up that it was Meredith until others started talking. Then I listened to it again. He actually names the man she moved on with as “Birney”, as in David Birney. All the facts he said about her lined up when I googled it. So here’s the timeline: He was completely mesmerized by Meredith when he meets her at 13 years old, she was 16 years old, through his Mother and stepfather. They stayed in contact until she gets married in ‘66. Fast-forward to 1971, Meredith gets a guest spot on PF. After 5 years David finally gets his chance. The episode airs December 31st 1971, so they were filming in mid August after David recovers from his emergency gall bladder surgery on July 15th and a month before the kidnapping threat happened. The kidnapping threat happened just before he received the Golden Apple award on October 1st live on the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. David went all in, in his love for her. While he was away for a month during the kidnapping threat he couldn’t tell anyone what’s going on, including Meredith. I don’t know if in that time she thinks he dumped her, she can’t handle his fame or she doesn’t feel the same way he does but she moved on to David Birney. The magic is gone. He is completely heartbroken. His worst nightmare, she abandoned him. This I think was the last brick in the wall that DC built between the abandonment issues, alcoholism and surviving the hysteria of his fame, that forever changed how he viewed relationships with women. He wasn’t going to ever allow himself to let a woman in that deep again. The first collateral damage from that was Susan Dey. This is why he would never let her out of the sister box. He had a mental block with Susan that he couldn’t figure out. Would Meredith and David’s relationship survived his fame? Probably not. But, I think he thought so. Does anyone ever get over their first heartbreak? This for David was the one that got away. This background story sure adds a whole new perspective when you watch that episode of PF. I really had to fight the urge to spell defense with a “s” instead of the British version that is with a “c”. He really sang the hell out of that song. That song was in his wheelhouse. DC is so charismatic and adorable in the interview with Rosie O’Donnell. His whole 40’s was just a beautiful time for him in more ways than one.

      Awesome Stacy, yes those tapes unfolded a lot of things didn`t they. You really don`t have to leave my name on the pictures in your videos. Stunning video though, I really enjoyed that. Thank You XX

      Yes, those tapes really clarified so much for me. It helps to understand him and the sometimes decisions that he made that seemed inexplicable. It just makes me sad that on the outside he came off as narcissistic with women. On the inside I think he had a lot of turmoil about his behavior that he couldn’t seem to change. What a complicated man....

    • @SM_6861
      @SM_6861  4 года назад +3

      Yes she is, but didn’t come out until sometime in the 2000’s. I don’t think he or she had a clue on that in ‘71. I would imagine he didn’t see that coming when Meredith came out.

    • @lynneweinstein3932
      @lynneweinstein3932 4 года назад +4

      Sm6861 but that might very well explain why she didn’t stay with him?? And interesting that he was in love with a woman who probably didn’t ever reciprocate his love, I assume she couldn’t ever match his devotion. Being gay isn’t something the just “happens” later in life. So here’s the psychological part - that would mean that he was unconsciously drawn to a woman who couldn’t love him back. It’s a sad commentary on his early insecure attachment. And who knows - perhaps that’s why he sang with such passion.

      When you listen to the Elliot Mintz Cassidy collection you really get the raw DC and how he felt in ‘74. I believe that his relationship with Meredith and how broken he was from it, really changed how he viewed relationships with women forever. Would their relationship ever survived his fame? I doubt it. I think Meredith saw that. But, for him that was the only time that he ever let a women in all the way, in his mind. He never let that happen again.

      Yes, he did. David and I met in March of '72. We had a very private, personal relationship until he died. There are things I know about David that his ex-wives don't even know because he never trusted them enough. I'm probably the only one who knows the real reason for his marriages in the first place. True love is putting up with a lot of things other people would never understand. I'll never regret my life or the things I've ever done in it.

      Susan bore the fallout from David’s love and devastation of Meredith. David never allowed himself to be that vulnerable with a woman again, ever. He loved Susan, but he put a wall up with her and never got out of his head. Too bad, cuz he never forgave himself for hurting her as bad as he did, especially in his ‘94 book.

      I saw that episode, she wss looking at him all lovey dovey too, too bad it never worked out. I bet it was a shock to him when she came out. But I also read he supported GBLTQ causes. I also read he was happy his daughter portrayed a bit or lesbian character on some show. In addition, his dad was rumored to be bi.
      Meredith's character Jenny was skinny dipping on the PF. That had to be kinda racy for a family show then. Naturally she had a body suit on. Susan and Merdith both starred in a 70's version of Little Women. I think it aired in 1978. I saw it as a kid.

      I did ask Elliot Mintz if he was going to release anymore tapes. He actually answered back. He said he was , that they were time consuming and expensive to convert. He didn’t know when it would be that he would get them out but that there would be more. I too loved listening to him for almost 4 hours. It was what he really thought and felt, not the public version we saw in interviews. It just makes DC all that more fascinating for me. I have to admit I teared up to we he sang In My Defense cuz he sang it with so much emotion. ❤️

      Oh, Wendy, so sorry to hear that you are still in lockdown. Do they know how much long that will be? We went from the pandemic and TP shortage to riots and looting in the major cities. All of a sudden the COVID virus is a non-factor with these riots. It’s insane. It makes me happy I live in a small town in Montana where there’s none of that ridiculousness going on. My mom is still recovering in a rehabilitation hospital. She has 3 more weeks to go. It’s been such a long haul for her but she’s hanging in there. DC really put everything he had into In My Defense. It was kind of his theme song his whole life. I’m pretty sure he really felt these kinds of songs personally. The Elliot Mintz tapes gave me so much insight into DC. Hopefully he releases more soon!

      I found this on the Elliot Mintz David Cassidy collection. Taped interviews that Elliot Mintz did with David in Hawaii in ‘74 after his world tour. He released almost 4 hours of those tapes on YT. What he released is all the stories DC has talked and wrote about but more details and all in his own words. Nothing salacious. It’s mesmerizing listening to David talk. I just used his own words about Meredith and brought it to life. Here’s the link to the Elliot Mintz tapes. ruclips.net/video/my9W-rohxVk/видео.html

    After listening to Mr Mintz tapes Ive made some research on DC website..And Ive found that actually it was a known fact that he'd met Meredith much earlier (Feb 1974) - "..bc her (Meredith's) father was his mother's Evelyn agent in the 60s" and that in (Nov 1974) '..David may be pinned for ex-friend , Meredith" and..(Oct. 74) "Those close to David here report that he really misses his lost love, M."..he also said that he had gone to Europe in the early 1972 to forget about the girl who had broken his heart..It wasnt hard to find if you knew what you were looking for.. I've even found that in 1994 he told the journalist who intervieved him "You look like a girl I went out when I was 19(?) , she played the mermaid on TPF"...

    • @SM_6861
      @SM_6861  4 года назад +1

      Yes, you had to know what you were looking for. He left that little detail out of his books which made the story and the timeline hard to figure out. For instance, it was hard to understand how he could fall so deeply in love with her in a month when he had just met her on the PF. When the EM tapes came out it all became really clear. It’s also explains what the Italy trip was largely about besides the emergency gall bladder surgery and the escalation of the hysteria when he started doing the concerts that year. He really did live through a lot of trauma in his life.

    Great video Stacy. Love your time line. Interesting that Susan Day has been positioned with her back to Meredith Baxter during the song. The Elliot Mintz tapes really fleshed things out. He seemed to enjoy spending time with Meredith and her 2 small children. I think perhaps she wanted someone more mature, but from what I've read about David Birney, it wasn't the best of choices. You're right , he did sing the hell out of that song, even though, in his autobiography he didn't consider "Time" to be a great musical. His forties were great. He seemed to be less hard on himself and was able to enjoy the ride. I hope you're well. They are slowly easing lockdown here but I don't think things will go back to how they were for some time to come. x

      Thank you! We will never know if Meredith had the same intense feelings for DC that he quite obviously had for her. They lived in a bubble for that month it sounds like. I wonder when he was away with that kidnapping scare if she really got to see how life would’ve been with his fame. There was no way he would’ve been able to stay away from those groupies on tour. It would’ve been hard to live with getting your heart broken every time he left. I’m sorry you all are still on lockdown. We seem to go from one crisis to another in the US. I don’t know if that is a coincidence that Susan was positioned like that. She was seriously dating one of the crew during PF so I don’t know where her crush for DC was in ‘71. Probably not as intense as it was in later years.

He had a fling with famed actress Gina LolaBrigida. In afdition, Keith crushed on few older gals as well. I never saw the episode, but I heard in the last season, he crushed on an slightly older classmate in college. I can imagine Shirley's reaction.

    Meredith had a very unfortunate partner in her marriage to David Birney; she had (3) ?children by him but through it all she claims (and her grown children back her) that he was a violent man and abusive. They divorced and she later came out now as being a lesbian.

    • @SM_6861
      @SM_6861  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I think she may have been hiding that fact she was a lesbian the whole time cuz in the 60’s and 70’s that was not ok. I don’t think David had a clue she felt that way. He was so infatuated with her from the age of 13 years old he couldn’t see it wasn’t really based in reality and he would’ve eventually destroyed that relationship.
