- Awesome little guitars with a single pickup that'll rip your face off when it's cranked up. Best bargains out there. Don't let their diminutive stature put you off. Size isn't everything, you know!
Excellent review as per, Foxy.. I love the simplicity of these guitars.. plug in and play!
Hi Kev and thanks :-) No push/pull nonsense and very little to think about except a volume knob (and/or a tone knob if one's that way inclined). Vastly underrated and usually pegged as student instruments but these are proper little potent rock machines! Cheers :-)
First Melody Maker I owned belonged to Steve Marriott, it was given to me by Ronnie Lane, he acquired it when the Small Faces split up. He told me that when Ron Wood & Rod Stewart joined they deemed it too student like and so surplus to requirements. Rather foolishly I did the same at a later date.
Hi Michael :-) Oh my, if only we could see into the future....we'd have all picked the correct six numbers by now! In reality, they are student like but I love the simplicity and they're potent enough to gig with IMO. Ah, you've just prompted me to have a listen to All Or Nothing - Steve Marriott was amazing. Cheers :-)
It's a flat shaped plank of wood with a pickup and strings attached. "The guitar" in its most simplest form, but it sounds rather good in your hands. Great review.
Hi Chit and thanks :-) That's an accurate description for sure and I really admire the simplicity of these and can only think they're not more widely used because of their student affiliations but these little fellas can rock all night with the best of 'em! Cheers :-)
I bought one back in 07 and foolishly sold it a year or two later. I just scored an identical one in pristine condition for a great price and will never get rid of this one. It is in deed liberating.
Hi Nicer :-) Ahh, the old 'I'll never get rid of it' scenario, eh? It's so funny you should post this contribution right now. I've owned and reviewed either 2 or 3 Yamaha AES 800 B's and sold them all. Recently, one popped up locally and I bought it because I really missed the ones I'd previously had. Let's see how long I can keep it hahahahaha. Cheers, Gary :-)
Its a fine guitar, sold mine 2010 and 2011 version's years ago, but I got one (2009) back a few days ago. Nice punk and rock guitar, and blues ofcourse. Very nice demo as well. !!!!!!
Hi Henry and thanks :-) I absolutely adore these guitars. They're very liberating in terms of ease of use, light weight and simple controls. For my money, they could even do without a tone knob! Cheers, Gary :-)
I bought 2 when nobody cared for these guitars. Now they are sought after triple in price. I wouldn't sell mine because I friggin love them. I have the same MM but in white and I have the 11' explorer in black.
Hi BB :-) The question is, would you spend £500 - £600 on a high end Epiphone or an entry level Gibson? There's an argument for down the pub! Cheers, Gary
@@FoxysGuitarShow Well the entry Gibson is the LP tribute @ $999 USD. The fit and finish is flawless I presume, usual gibson quality. I bought a Epi 61 LP SG and its not on par with a finished Gibson. Noticed some dips in the neck, the binding wasnt finished properly, some overspray on the fret board, other minor finishing touches. Nothing that cant be worked around or touched up, but I guess thar justifies paying top dollar for the Gibson. But also the 61 SG LP is in that same bracket at $899 USD and it comes nicely equipped, has inlays, nice Gibson pickups and electronics. Definitely a thin grey line right there. But the SG sounds phenomenal. Its basically an entry level gibson at this price with equipment.
Loved the passing Nod to the Quo and Focus. A basic guitar indeed not quite my cup of tea. I like a carved cap. Good informative review Foxy. Keep em coming.
Hahahaha, hi Sam and thanks :-) Well done for spotting Focus - I thought they'd been long forgotten! These little guys can be picked up for less money than an Epiphone and whilst they don't have all the whistles and bells they're just so well put together - I was amazed at the potency TBH. More guitar based tomfoolery on the way! Cheers :-)
I always liked these at the time, in black. Every now and again I look on ebay. That one is clean!
Back then you could get one brand new for £360, I still remember.
Hi there Paul :-) Although these were aimed at the student guitarist as an entry level Gibson, they were very serious instruments and vastly underrated. Their simplistic design lets you concentrate on the job in hand rather than complicated settings. Blimey, £360, eh? Even now, they're not fortunes and they're properly potent Little Rock Machines. Cheers, Gary :-)
@@FoxysGuitarShow Finally got one in black, 2009 so very thin paint and nice grain. I'm quite taken by it to be honest, it seems to be a true reissue of the '59 they made exactly 50 years before and feels like it.
I recently read a review from the release that listed them at £399 which is probably 600 in today's money
Got mine from Chris Wintrip, great action and tone! Sold it to Tucker Parsons. Now I’m looking for another
Hi Kevin :-) They really are versatile little blighters and suited to all styles. Also, you can wear one all night without getting a bad back. Man, you know some excellent musicians. Cheers :-)
Fantastic playing and sound
Hi Patrick and thanks :-) They're proper potent pocket rock rockets! Cheers, Gary :-)
I want This guitar
Hi Patrick :-) They're brilliant little pocket rock rockets. Easy to get along with and really well made. Cheers, Gary :-)
Wonder why they don't put pro bucket pick ups in them or emg
Hi Kel :-) I see what you're saying but from a personal perspective I have quite a fondness for the little single coils. Not massively powerful but tonally they cut like a knife! Cheers, Gary :-)
Have you tunneled into KFC yet for free Zinger burger's ;-) Love me some MM
Hahahahah, hi Bigsbee :-) I'm off the KFC ATM. I've been on a diet because I put 15kg on when I packed the fags in. It seems I replaced the tabs with beer and pies hahahahaha. Cheers, Gary :-)
I shall be 64 in 2 weeks and just started back ice skating after a 50 year lay-off. I can't believe how much better I feel.....apart from when I fall over hahahahaha :-)
....y por qué es liberador?
Hola Leonardo :-) porque no pesa nada! Salud, Gary :-)
Less time farting around with guitars and more time sorting out your garden please.
Hahahaha, hi Mucous :-) I know! It's been so miserable and my CBA has really kicked in this year! Cheers, Gary :-)
