I was lucky enough to get one of these in a Deal of the Day Sale for $999, exceptional lens. I opted for this lens over the Canon EF 35 F/1.4 II
That's a great price for it. You would have come out with a great lens either way.
Love my new Sigma 40 and Sigma 105, but for me anyway, Canon still rules the zooms. I also have the 11-24, 16-35 III the 24-70 II and the 100-400 II. If I can't take a decent photo with that lot I'll give the game away.
That's a pretty sweet kit.
Thanks for review! I have one and this is my favorite lens on EOS R! Love it!
The EOS R is a great platform for it. AF works great, the better grip (than Sony) helps the balance, and being able to put your focus point pretty much anywhere and get reliable focus is fantastic.
Great review. I have this lens on my 5DSR. It produces awesome images. I do think Sigma should throw in a free burro to help pack it around. 🤠
LOL @ the last comment, and the 5DsR is a great pairing for this.
You probably will not see this but because of this video I got the Sigma Art 40mm . It went down to $999 at B&H . I was looking hard at the Tamron 35 f/1.4 . I did like it’s bokeh better but something about this lens made me want it more . I think it was the slight tighter fov. I sold my 50mm art to help offset the cost .
With me shooting live music photography and videos the 40 seemed like it’ll tell the story of a show better than the 50. It just takes out that bit of background information I like .
I shoot a 28mm a lot and it’s become a trademark “look” for my work . The 40art will complement it well I believe. If I like it’s performance I’ll get the 28mm art next .
Thanks for all you do
I'm sure you won't be disappointed by the lens.
As always, another great review. Only wish you would’ve touched upon the astro/coma performance also. Cheers
Unfortunately I'm somewhat limited by the weather conditions at the time I do the review, and this time of year we have a steady amount of overcast.
thank you for this....i am considering this lens
It's a great performer.
I think I am an unconventional trinity sort of guy as I go through my portrait work, cheers. And thank you for biting down hard on that bullet.
LOL- thanks
Exc video,…as usual 😊… have a joyous Xmas!
You too, thank you.
As a Canon R6/5 user and we’re still awaiting dedicated RF mount Art lenses from Sigma would you still be drawn to this 40mm adapted EF mount?
Great review by the way. Thanks 🙏🏻
It's huge, but it is beautiful optically, so yes.
As the owner of Canon R6 and Sigma 40/1.4 with EF mount I can easily say ABSOLUTELY YES. This lens is incredible not only by its crazy sharpness right from f/1.4 but mainly due to its very unique and beautiful 3D rendering. I own several EF and RF "L" lenses but this Sigma shines among them.
The EF/RF adapter is only an issue in the internet discussions. In the real world usage, it disappears easily.
I bought this lens from B&H a few days ago as it was on sale for $999; I'm still waiting for it to arrive. The dilemma I had was whether to choose Canon EF mount or Sony E-mount. I've been shooting with a 5D Mark IV for over a year, but I very recently got a Sony a7R IV. I have the MC-11 adapter, but I noticed when I use my Canon lenses on the a7RIV, the AF options are limited. I didn't have a lot of time to research since the B&H deal was about to expire minutes before I made the purchase, so I chose the E-mount in hopes that I get the best continuous eye AF performance from that lens. I don't know if there is a huge difference in performance compared to using the adapter. If there isn't, I think I should have gone with the EF mount.
I probably would have gone for the EF mount in your situation (it works very well via the MC-11), but you'll be happy with the lens either way.
Thank you thank you for checking the boxes on this review. Did you make up my mind for me on the Sigma 40 vs Tamron 35 ? No . But closer for sure .
I am a lover of the 28mm focal lenght and want the Sigma 28 .
And I’ve been shooting an old actually 2 different old Nikkor 28s and a 35 . Contrary to most folks views there is a big “look” difference for my uses of live music photography. I’d been thinking of just getting a 35 to split the difference.
I’ve been shooting the Sigma art 50 in combo with these others and honestly it just misses focus too much and I don’t particularly like a 50mm fov . I sent it into Sigma and it came back focusing slower than before? So can they slow its focus down ? And that is one reason it misses but the other is it front and back focuses . One hit in many misses . Check it before a show in good conditions and it’s nailing focus . Get in the field and it just don’t make it happen. I noticed part of the problem is focus shift on my DSLRs.
Ok thanks again Dustin you rock brother !
Sigma has gotten MUCH better with their newer lenses.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yeah, their 28, 40, and 105 kick the butt's of their own earlier 35, 50, and 85. The new gen of the 50 and such do perform better though. And that's to say a lot considering how good the worst of the Art line is compared to most lenses.
Thank you for the review
You're welcome.
Thx, as ever, a thorough review.
My pleasure.
I ended up with the Nikon 50mm 1.2 Z.
Better bokeh.
40mm is pretty impressive though.
It is pretty impressive.
Great review. Great pictures to show off the various aspects of the lens. Always an aesthetically appealing quality to the images that really contributes to the uniqueness of your reviews. Like always, I delay on my purchase of new stuff including a mirrorless camera. I would like to see the Z series mature particularly in its lens selection. While I wait for that, I am tempted to move to Sony but that is complicated by my decades long commitment to Nikon. This lens will likely remain far beyond my $ tolerance but I think there is a rising tide when it comes to lens design and future less expensive lenses will benefit from these advances. Kind of like TV's. Anyway, I love watching your reviews regardless of the subject matter. Keep it up!
It is tough when you have long had brand loyalty. I had the same thing with Canon, but I've slowly shifted towards Sony more (though I'm still shooting Canon as well). Nikon has some pretty glaring flaws with the Z series, from what I can tell, and they are also in a difficult position financially. We'll see...
@@DustinAbbottTWI What flaws outside of the lens selection have you seen? I have heard things about af tracking and some banding in the shadows (which is a deal killer currently for me having dealt with the D7100).
Mr. Abbott, how about when compared to another third party 'big beefy boy' standard prime like the Tamron 35 1.4? They seem to have very similar optical qualities. Do you prefer the one focal length over another in your shooting? Thanks!
That's a tough question, as it really is subjective...and can be situational. I'd personally probably trend towards the Tamron because it is more reasonably sized.
Nice review
You're welcome.
Dustin, someone ranked this Sigma Art lens to the same grade of Carl Zeiss Otus which I'm aware that you've hands-on experience, do you think the aforesaid observation is fair and correct? Thanks for your view in advance.
That's not far off. The color rendition isn't Otus worthy, but this is lens is extremely sharp and very well corrected. It is optically one of Sigma's best.
How’s the bokeh of the 40 compared to the 50 and the new 35 1.2?
It's very nice, actually. This lens was designed for Sigma's CINE lineup, so it (along with the 28mm F1.4), are some of the most optically superior Sigma lenses.
@@DustinAbbottTWI do u have full size samples?
I do, but I only give my full size images to Patrons.
@@DustinAbbottTWI ohh I see :-(
Between sigma 40 f1.4 and Canon rf 50 f1.2, which would you choose if the budget is not limited? Can't decide on these two lens.
Both great lenses. I would probably go with the Canon, as it is a native mount lens and has slightly nicer rendering, I think, but there really isn't a wrong answer there.
How would you compare the images from the Sigma 40mm F1.4 ART vs the Zeiss Otus 55mm F1.4?
Also, I just purchased a Panasonic S1R camera, and I was wondering if I should buy the Sigma 40mm for L mount or should I get it in Canon EF mount?
I already have the Sigma MC-21 adapter and I still have lots of (Canon) mount lenses. My concern is that for resale purposes it's probably easier to sell a Canon EF lens as opposed to an L mount lens. Thanks.
First of all, you're definitely right about the resale potential. Are you wanting to do video? If you are wanting to do some manual focus, then the Otus is the way to go. Both lenses are incredibly good optically.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for your feedback.
Muchas gracias amigo. Saludos desde Madrid
De nada
Hello Dustin. I wanted to know how does this lens perform in comparison to Zeiss Batis 40mm CF in terms of sharpness and overall image quality? Thanks.
This lens is sharper and has a bit better contrast. The Zeiss is obviously a LOT smaller and lighter and has the close focus abilities.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the replay!
Hey Dustin! For rendering, do you recommend Tamron 35mm f1.4 or Sigma 40mm f1.4?
They are both great. The Tamron is cheaper and smaller; the Sigma is probably a hair sharper.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks!
Works well crane lab 3 and rs3 pro
Cool. That’s a pretty heavy combo, so I’m glad it works.
Hi Dustin. How is the Eye Auto Focus on A7R3 via MC-11. Is it good?
It works very well
Thank you Dustin for doing such a great review of this beast 😊 I miss it ever since I switched to sony but the 35 1.2 has impressed me tremendous. Maybe in future i will get it again to satisfy the GAS buildup 😁👍
The 35mm F1.2 is a great alternative.
Dustin, thanks for the video! Please tell me what would you choose as a Sigma 35mm 1.2 or Sigma 40 mm 1.4 working glass?
If I shot only Sony, I would go with the 35mm F1.2. I had shot on both Canon and Sony, I would buy the 40mm so that I can it on both.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the answer! I have Sony a7-3 and I need a lens for portlets, I choose from these two.
Definitely go with 35 1.2 if you shoot sony only. It's exceptional since its designed for sony mirrorless.
@@Xetenor Actually designed for the Leica L mount ;) But the principles are the same :)
@@Xetenor Thank you friend!
How can a 16 element lens have good micro contrast?
Hi Bruce, just because someone says something on the Internet doesn't make it true. There is no guarantee that lenses with fewer elements will have better microcontrast (or they all would). The Zeiss Otus lenses spot some of the best microcontrast that I've ever seen, and they are often high element count. It's all about the individual optical design, not some Murphy's Law.
I’m realizing this about the amount of lens elements also . And it may have been true in a way at one time period or another . I think light transmission with better glasses and coatings have much to do with that and maybe something about lens designs? Better sensor designs in combination with all the other things . So much going on in the physics.
But we do know companies like Zeiss and Leica use some exceptional glass elements in their lenses. Probably better than a company like Sigma in their price range there has to be an area of cost cutting.
@@troyphillips1077 I think your confusing cost with value, the Leica lens most likely costs the same, maybe even cheaper than the Sigma, but they are valued more. People buy Leica for the little red badge on it, performance is secondary and it is often the case when scientific testing is done.
Luckily i waited for this to arrive rather than get the 50mm f1. 4
This is the superior lens, for sure.
OK, the only gallery I can found of the 40mm 1.4 its from the same guy that make on of the few videos I can found....
Nobody just bought that lens?
I don't think it has been a big seller...though it is excellent.
I wonder if the hsm motor will be a noticeable downgrade for stills on the sony system or if it’s only noticeable for videos!? 😬🤷🏻♂️
It's not as critical for stills. I've mostly found that accuracy isn't quite as high, but usually quite good.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks for the information 😃
