Hey sir Peter, I'm planning to purchase this 40mm art to replace my 50mm 1.8g on my z6ii as well. How's the focusing performance? Does it hunt a lot or something? I'm a wedding photographer by the way.
If you care about video, then the RF lens does better. I tried using it for video before but due to the weight and length, it’s alittle hard to balance on gimbal. The af wise is comparable to other ef lenses
The weight of this lens is a curse and a blessing. I ended up going out only with this lens on the camera, no other. 40mm replaces 50 and 35 easily... I tried this lens on my GFX 100. Not a good idea, I used a Techart adapter but I had no IS, no AF, only focus peaking in Manual. Techart crops the image in order to avoid the vignette so you end up having 9552x6268 instead of 11648x8736
Great video. You convinced me to get this 40mm over the rf 50mm 1.2, due to the CA. Just like you, I can't stand looking at CA. I'm replacing my sigma 50mm 1.4. How's the autofocus in video? You mentioned the recommended shutter 140, but in video mode shutter will always be lower than 140 speed.
I use it on my Fuji GFX 100 it works Great and it covers the sensor almost totally. I use it in 35mm auto on the camera and it picks the full frame every time
Personally I’m not too sure. The sigma 40mm f1.4 is crazily good. I think it’s a high order for the Canon zoom to beat honestly. That said both are so different don’t think you should compare them this way
I own both. The 40mm is a portrait or specialty lens in my opinion. It’s great in low lit situations to allow you to get the shot without extra lighting (think restaurants, events, etc), but 40mm is still somewhat tight, so you can’t be too close to the subject. My 15-35 is my to go lens if I have no idea what I want to shoot or where I will be going. The 15-35 is sharp enough, but I’d say the 40mm art lens is on a different level in terms of image quality and sharpness.
I hope your interested in the RF 85 f/2 , I wouldn’t mind your opinion. Maybe 3rd parties might introduce native R & Z mount lenses, even Zeiss Milvus/ Otus top of the list, so far the native mount lenses that I’m aware of are wide angle , Loawa etc
Thanks for the review. I am planning on getting a used gfx body, it would be very very very nice if you can do a video for adapted lens on the gfx since you have both gfx body and some ef mount lenses. I am very looking forward to adapt this Sigma 40mm on the gfx. Thanks!
I personally dont like adapting. But my friend who also owns a GFX loves doing it. His take was the Sigma 40mm works pretty well with dark vignetting at the corner but the sharpness do extend quite a large portion of the frame. However the steel string adapter gives alot of error using it.
Great review, buddy! Thank you! I have the R5 and RF 50 1.2, Tamron 35 1.4 and Canon RF 35 1.8 as well as RF 24-105 f4. What do you recommend me to get as my next lens? Optimally it should be a telelens. I'm considering RF 70-200 2.8, but I would have to save for a long time. Alternatively I could get the 135 1.8 Sigma to use with an adapter, as I do with my Tamron 35. 1.4 Oh, and is there a big difference between Sigma 40 1.4 and RF 50 1.2? I am surprised the Sigma is sharper since people call the RF 50 the best 50'ish lens ever made, but well done Sigma!
You can consider getting the older 70-200 EF mount like Version II or III. They are more affordable then the RF but just weigh more. Else sigma 105/135 are alternative
@@ZPProductions yeah but the weight on those older 70-200 2.8 is a deal breaker unfortunately, because I want to bring my lens hiking. Thank you though!:)
Good review. I did think that the 40/1.4 would beat the canon 50 1.2. And that was designed for old mounts. Just shows how good sigma are. I also think after seeing the wear on the barrel of some 50 1.2 lenses, that the sigma is much better built externally at least. Their art series is excellent. The 40 art is class leading for astro and avoiding the dreaded winged stars (astigmatism) effect/
The sigma art is really as good as it gets for a standard/wide focal length lens. Modern optics are getting better though and I foresee newer lenses will one day be even better but probably at significantly higher cost
Actually, if you're able to could you test it on the GFX 100? I've seen samples adapted to the 50R and S but never the 100. They said coverage is good with minimal vignetting. I feel like it would be sharper than the 45 GF.
That will have to be tried but the last adapter I got didnt AF too well so I dropped adapting lenses. Maybe when I get a better adapter again. At the pixel level im sure the Sigma is same in the center and better in the outer region. But at the extreme edge which the sigma is not designed to cover, will need testing.
@@ZPProductions I did get upset at AF adapters too but I've heard decent things about the Steelsring. I autojammed the Samyang 85mm f/1.2 XP wide open then moved it to a dumb adapter which I used with the GFX now. Still I wish I could occasionally stop it down.
A Visual Novel I actually own the first gen steelsring but with sigma lens the af is too wild for me and manual af don’t make much lense when the gf lenses are already pretty good hmm
@@etcoyote that shouldn’t be a problem with R5. You can have your mode move randomly and if it’s more then half body it will hit eye af (as long as the box is there)
The Sigma 40mm 1.4 Art is wonderful. It is big and heavy but it produces beautiful images… I use mine on a Nikon Z6II.
The 40mm sigma is still my gold standard in performance at that range

Thanks a lot. The RF 50/1.2 is great, however I like the look of the 40 Art and really consider buying it for my R5C.
For video considering you are using R5C, the 40mm I feel is a nicer to use range
Here 3 years later, i picked up the 40mm 1.4 for what equals to 740 us dollar. Man this is a great lens. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for excellent review👍😇
my mind is blown... the 50mm 1.2 is so crazy sharp. And the sigma bests it....
Great info, nice work
Thanks for this comprehensive review. This is a beautiful lens, if you can get past the size! How does it perform for video AF on the R5?

It works nicely with steelsring and gfx100 on latest firmware. But that said, I use it using my R5 blazing fast.

Great review, you have convinced me, it is already bought, in two days to play like a child :). Too bad it still doesn't have an rf mount
It’s a fantastic piece of glass. Only issue is that it’s really big and alittle long with adapter

Use the Canon EF to R adapter. Just the basic one will do

Sigma 40mm f1.4 cover FUJifilm GFX?

how about adapting this lens on gfx 100?

The video autofocus with sigma lens the speed ok?
