  • In this video we're listening to more from Status Quo. We've only tried a couple of songs from this group, but from later time periods. We were told their earliest work is the best, so we're very interested in hearing this track. Let's dig in. Enjoy!

Still heavier than most so-called "heavy" bands these days, who all have this overly compressed, scooped sound that takes all the punch and aggression out of it.

I got to know Alan Lancaster, the bass player. He was my teacher at TAFE in the early 2000's, and upon my quest to retrieve and save Donnie Sutherland tapes (host of a TV show called Sounds in Australia(, I discovered he was also a friend of Donnie's. Very nice man with a lot of knowledge on the music business.. He had a lot to say.

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering I tell you what, Jay. It was actually weird when I first saw him walk out of his class as the teacher. I had to ask another teacher if I had seen him before, and that teacher laughed and told me who he was. I also recognised him for being in an Australian superband called The Party Boys. Because I was one of the few students that knew of his music career, we'd have chats before class and I learned quite a bit about Quo. He had a lot to say about Quo and life in general. Then I got to meet him again when I was doing all my Donnie Sutherland tape hunting (digitalizing old Donnie Sutherland/Sounds episode before the tapes deteriorated). Some stories he told me sounded quite Spinal Tap.

QUO jammed and wrote and rehearsed, then they recorded LIVE in the studio.
There is far more depth to their lyrics when you scratch the surface.
"I want all the world to see
To see you're laughing, and you're laughing at me
I can take it all from you
    Again again again again
Again again again and deeper and down"
"I have all the ways you see
To keep you guessing, stop your messing with me
You'll be back to find your way
    Again again again again
    Again-gain-gain-gain deeper and down"
"I have found you out you see
I know what you're doing, what you're doing to me
I'll keep on and say to you
    Again again again again
    Again-gain-gain-gain deeper and down"
Of course it's got all the Down Down lyrics in between, but he's talking to a woman who has been messing him around.
From the late 60's to the early 80's Status Quo were untouchable.
They released an album every year from 1968-1983.
They derailed and imploded mainly due to 2 members over use of Cocaine.
After the Drummer and Bass player left they were never the same.
    RIP -Alan & Rick

  •  6 месяцев назад +4

Quo created a sound all of their own. Heavy. Dense sound. Lots of barre chords. Lots of bass root notes. Two guitars, both contributing rhythm and lead/fills, but the basis was a twelve bar shuffle ( tump-tee-tump tee-tump tee-tump tee-tump tee-tump tee-tump tee-tump ) those barre chords which alternate from a standard 7th chord to the movement of the 5th to a 6th note, ring finger supplanted by the little finger coming down to achieve the uplift on each third beat. That sounds way more complicated than it is. Just watch their little finger whenever Francis Rossi or Rick Parfitt's guitar is shown on camera.
    They were very loud live.
Mr H, Francis did use a Strat from time to time; whilst Rick mostly played a Tele, he also played a range of Fenders and Gibsons, single coils and humbuckers...and yet the combined massive sound was always the same...
Mrs H you really are a Rock Chick.
    Great stuff!

Saw them several times during the 70’s and 80’s. The were/are a great rock band with a huge following in many parts of the world (although not the USA). Surprisingly Down Down was their only UK number 1 single however. As a point of interest but not criticism as it’s another of those “common language” quirks we have - in the UK their name is pronounced “State Us Quo” with a hard “a” rather than the soft “a” you would use. Great video, keep up the good work.

If you're from Australia this song was drilled into our sculls by being used in an advertising jingle for a supermarket in the 2010's ("Down Down, prices are down"). The band even cashed in by appearing in some of the ads. Introduced the band to a new generation. Thank God I'm old enough to know it in it's original incantation. 😁Oh and edit...The bass player (Alan Lancaster) moved to Australia & played in a few bands. One called The Bombers who I saw supporting AC/DC. Sadly, he's passed. Meaningless trivia, I know.

I recall British comedy duo Mel Smith and Griff Rhys-Jones at a live benefit introducing Status Quo and making fun of their songs sounding an awful lot like all their other songs... as they were quite a basic rock n' roll band.
Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster were schoolboy friends (and I'm always reminded by old photos of Spinal Tap that they used in their movie of the same name), and like that fictional band the old Quo did psychedelic music in the 60s notably "Pictures of Matchstick Men" before settling down into just good straight rock

Their only No.1, (to date!), in their native UK. This is a TV performance, (usually for Top of the Pops), that's been adapted, somewhat, where the shortened single version has had the longer album version merged onto the end of it. This was pretty much at the height of their popularity/success, but would plateau/maintain it for approximately another 10 years or so, with singles almost entirely constant within the top 20, if not top 10 of the charts. Quo have always been a, 'feel good', band who never took their output too seriously. In their earlier years, (up to the mid 70's), they kind of wanted to prove themselves, and managed to do so around about the time of this video. By the following year, they wanted to ease off a tiny, little bit on the, 'serious rock artist', persona, and wanted to diversify a little. The release of a cover of, 'Wild Side of Life', was probably the first step toward that. Universally accepted and still considered part of the same period, but it lead onto a more commercial sounding, dare I say, poppier sound that had, (if we're perfectly honest with ourselves), always been there. That's not to say that they couldn't rock with the best of them, of course. But, other than the aforementioned early 70's period of proving themselves, they've always had a happy-go-lucky approach to their song writing, doing what they do best. Creating a blend of 12 bar boogie influenced rock/pop that appealed to many, ever since.

That's not actually the proper ending, it's a mix of the edited single version, with some of the album version added on the end. you can hear the change in tone towards the end where someone has bolted on some of the album version to the single version.

70s Quo were the classic rock 'n' roll band. For me, things went a bit downhill when they added a keyboard player. Mystery Song is my favourite of theirs because of the killer riff which Rick Parfitt apparently spent all night in the studio working on - he was on something else as well! Funny you mention the guitars, because Francis Rossi has a green Telecaster which has become his talisman over many years, so this video must have been filmed before he bought it.
