- In this video we're listening to The Undertones. We watched a documentary for our Patreon channel on John Peel's record box, and the story of how John had asked that this song be played at his funeral came up. Naturally, we had to hear it front to back after that. So, this should be quite interesting. We can't wait! Enjoy!

Singer and frontman Fergal Sharkey is now one of the UK most prominant environmental campaigners. The man is a true legend in any sense.
John Peel was always right
When he died, so many bands playing gigs played this in tribute, fantastic
John Peel was massive for me as a teenager in the 90s. When he passed, me and my friends got suitably drunk in his honour. Also my friend once pinched his bum at all tomorrow’s parties. Legend gone too soon
I'm so glad to learn that the thermal paste worked!
This is a great track by this band. John Peel was so important in the British underground music scene, he championed bands that no one else would, and he'd give any band a chance regardless of genre, his late night music show was mandatory listening.
John Peel was the most important figure in my youth.
@FFM0594 Quite definitely, during my teenage years too, sadly I don't think that we'll see his like again.
@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis. No, he was unique.
@@FFM0594 I agree.
They were kids who got together in a youth club, the local music shop loaned them the posh guitars for the recording session. Most honest bit of punk rock ever.
This was John Peel's favourite song of all time. There was a documentary many years ago where John explained that he would receive hundreds of cassette tapes from fledgling bands and he couldn't possibly listen to them all so he would listen to a bit of each tape then used a star marking system. If he marked the tape with 3 stars then it was one he definitely wanted to come back to, 2 stars was good and 1 star was decent, most probably got no stars. He actually pulled out the original cassette tape he received from The Undertones, and the entire label was covered in stars.
We reviewed a documentary on John Peel's record box for our Patreon channel. Very interesting guy.
It’s hard to understand the impact John Peel had on music particularly late 70’s/80’s for me his show was unmissable and I found some great bands through him, everyone knows how much he loved this song he asked for “teenage dreams so hard to beat” engraved on his headstone, really enjoyed your reaction
was a Peel devotee at the time and bought it immediately after he first played it. At the time, it was only available via mail order and I still have that single, on the Good Vibrations label - and it's now worth a smallt fortune.
Widely regarded as one of the best-ever pop songs. Must be played LOUD ❤
At the time and first time hearing this it was simply the best thing ever........and still is. Very much appreciate you putting this out there.
On John Peels' birthday party, the band were wondering what gift they could give him. They decided to give him the original handwritten lyrics of the song complete with crossings out and alterations and frame if for him. Being an emotional man, when they gave him it, he said ''I had to go inside for a while to compose myself, it was the perfect gift''
Peel loved the Wedding Present. So many good songs from them . How about playing My Favourite Dress because its fab!!!!
Any band that puts George Best ⚽️ on a cover is worthy ! 👍
The Wedding Present made a fabulous album of Ukrainian songs.
Yup , John Peel single handedly made the Undertones stars, his championing of this track and the band brought these toe rags from Derry in NI to everyone’s living rooms their first appearance with this song on TOTP is sensational, they are SO thrilled to be on the telly and it’s so refreshing . It’s just a rock n roll track with youthful new wave energy , what’s not to like - loads of other bangers from this band to come hopefully? My perfect cousin and Wednesday week are my other favs
👍🏴
Double Yay !!!
How Tery Hooley found them
@@andymullen4534 sorry Andy that sentence doesn’t make any sense , who’s Terry ? If it’s the guy who discovered them in Derry that’s great but I meant that JP’s unwavering support and constant playing of their single put them in the mainlands headlights and directly led to TOTP , have I picked you up wrong ? 🤷♂️
👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering watch the film good vibrations Terry Hooley deserves a lot more credit than he got . It was he who got the track to John peel
@@andymullen4534 I’m not gonna go to all that trouble tbh Andy , so Terry gave the single/tape to JP , fine , no dispute there , I’ll take your word for it - then JP did exactly what I said he did and Voila they took off ! Not sure why you want to nitpick with what I said tbh ? 🤷♂️
👍🏴
Amazed you haven't reacted to this before! As others have said, one of the great raw pop songs of all time! Always good as well to hear respect for the great John Peel.
Your ginger boy always has something to say about the good videos . This song has been one of those lifetime favourites around forty years for me. Chris and Cynthia Thank you guys 👏👏👏✌️🤘👍❤️
Fergal is hero in my book....a real environmental hero....saw him on tv recently talking about and almost raging about pollution in a small river.....top guy....top song....great reaction reaction.
John Peel regarded this as the best pop song ever, who are we to argue ?
I was that young kid that got to hear it twice and I was lucky to have two older brothers and a older sister listening at the same time all thinking wow 👏
An absolute banger, The mighty John Peels favourite song and way up there on my list. My second shout out, cheers
A great track. John Peel did a great show. Most folks my age had tapes they made of the shows.
Aye - me n my mates were 15/16 and we used to go round to each other’s houses just hear his show - imagine THAT happening these days ? 😮
👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering Nae Play on Demand in those days. If you missed it you missed it. You would have to hope one o yr mates Taped it.
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering Mi bloody comment just disappeared.
@@SPKdesign1 dang ! Did you impugn RUclips or Google in yer comment sir ?

@@SPKdesign1is THIS the one that disappeared? The one aboot taping it ?

Great track from these guys ! This is a staple on punk rock compilations & one of many great singles they did in the early days of punk. Love the handclaps. Would loved to have seen them & The Ramones on the same bill !
The riff was the first i learnt
😊.John Peel a superb DJ and music guru said this was the perfect pop song!
Yay , Ace ! How this great band from Derry rose to fame despite the "Troubles " in NI is well shown on many TV documentrys . The Movie "Good Vibrations " tells the story of a Record shop owner in Belfast who promoted a few bands ,during the 70 s , the " Undertones" were one of the success stories ! and the Journey it took to get the great John Peel to give them a listen !
Peely played Teenage Kicks twice on his Radio Show . This had never been done before !
Great Band , that Movie is a must See !!! Cheers ! Great blast from the Past ..
The drummer was 14, the rest of the band were 17 when this came out.
Love this song, to me it's perfect Punk Pop with Feargals distinctive voice. The Undertones were from Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland and largely avoided singing about the 'Troubles' unlike Stiff Little Fingers (from Belfast) who approached it head on. I love both bands and was fortunate to see them both live in their early days. The Undertones had several hits - 'My perfect Cousin', 'Jimmy Jimmy', 'Here comes the summer'. Their sound matured with the excellent third album 'Positive touch' with songs like 'Julie Ocean', 'Positive touch', 'When Saturday comes' and 'It's going to happen'. Cheers
We did Here Comes The Summer. The others are now on the list.
takes me back to when i was a teenager, brilliant.
Yep, the Undertones wete like the Irish version of Buzzcocks - perfect punk pop. Check out My Perfect Cousin of I've Got Your Number. The grat thing about John Peel was that his musical taste got more exteme as he aged - i remember thinking, cripes, this band Big Black (Steve Albini) are hard to listen but Peel kept on playing them. We have only got Radio6 in the UK these days and it is a much paler version of Peel.
Song of my youth!- best ever!! Great band- still touring now!
But not with Fergal Sharkey as singer and front man.
@@jabbathehut656
Yes correct!
But Paul Mcloone is a great singer in his own right and actually more charismatic than Dergsl on stage ! However have to agree Fergal was a one off and is an icon!
Fergal!
Great track. For some reason I always gravitate to listening to Another Girl, Another Planet by The Only Ones after I've heard this. Another great track you should check out if you've not already done so.
I like this group when they were on a simple album great live album great music
Magic, My Perfect Cousin is great too. These guys were about during a time of extreme violence in our communities, lots of bombs and bullets.
I bought this as a single when it first came out and then bought the second album Hypnotised which is great and a little more knowing.
The only song I believe John Peel played twice in a row on the same show. The lyrics are carved on Johns tombstone.
For facial expression from a drummer, my favourite is Simon Kirke with Free, All Right Now TOTP. 1970
These guys were great live.
he loved the fall too so you'll have to react to some of them i would think 👍
I wondered if we might get something from the John Peel Record Box doc!
A timeless classic, there will always be teenagers, there will always be hormones, this song will live forever.
Feargal Sharkey had a dubious solo career, and the some of rest of the band became, That Petrol Emotion. They did some good stuff, like, Big Decision.
Big Stick doing Drag Racing is on that documentary iirc, its a lot of fun!
i saw the undertones in about 1979/1980 and they were brilliant- fergal sharkey's voice was as good as the records
Such a great song 🤘

Wicked 🖤 i love this song
See a lot of comments here Relating John peel to this record not a mention of.the real man who found the undertones Terry Hooley check out the film good vibrations good watch its about the record store he owned & the journey him the undertones & other bands went on
Saw that film and really enjoyed it. Great look at grassroots music.
The lineTeenage kicks so hard to beat is on John Peels gravestone.
Great song from a great band!
2:20, 2:41, 4:51, 5:12, 5:34 - You may be interested to know that 'you' was changed from 'it' at the last minute so the song could be played - nice ❤
Undertones debut album is pure RnR genius
My Perfect Cousin, Wednesday Week, Jimmy Jimmy and It's Gonna Happen are excellent choices too.
We did Wednesday Week. We put the others on our list.
Undertones have a lot of great tunes.....
Try "Get Over You" or "You Got My Number" next :)
ALSO. MY PERFECT COUSIN AND JIMMY JIMMY 2 BRILL SONGS BY THEM 😊
What a great reaction to The Undertones! I have been a sub for a long time, and you two really listen to your followers- when you can, check out "You got my number" by these guys! I have it as a Top 10 favorite single!
Only just discovered you by accident. WHY, it's my kind of stuff.
There are alot of John Peels festive top 50s available on RUclips
This band was I think from Derry in Northern Ireland.
That's how to do it. Fergal Sharkey had a huge solo hit called, A good heart.
It was originally "I want to hold it tight..."
If you like great drumming and bass you should check out Infectious Grooves - Violent And Funky. A band that has Mike Muir from Suicidal Tendencies on vocals, Robert Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies/Metallica) on bass and Brooks Wackerman (Avenged Sevenfold) on drums. Also the guitarists Adam Siegel and Dean Pleasents. Great musicians
The Undertones certainly had some great tunes, playing the kind of punk that had a broader appeal than most bands of the genre, but still with that raw edge. If you do like the upbeat punk sound though, a modern favourite of mine are Rumkicks, a female punk band from Korea. This is their song "Drinking Every Day" ruclips.net/video/sKvaozzxAt0/видео.html which is in English, despite them not being fully fluent in English.
Saw them live a few times but with new singer paul mcloon..still amazing live.
Mrs. H loves it.
Favourite Undertones track has to be, 'My Perfect Cousin.'
Pop/punk just didn't get any better than this.
I don't believe you had never heard this before!! 😃😃😃
She looks demented 😂
Nice one.
You might care to preview: '(Can't) get over you' by the same band.
Another good tune by them is :The undertones - my perfect cousin
🎶 What I like to do he doesn't 🎶
Another for you. Anthea and donna, uptown top ranking
I never got to see that John Peel box collection doco, but I heard Sydney group, XL Capris, got a mention for one of their singles being in that box.
Wiki say about XL Capris ''My City Of Sydney": It is one of the 143 singles stored in a small wooden box by British DJ John Peel that is the subject of the television documentary John Peel's Record Box.
Maybe do a Tommy Leonetti vs XL Capris 'My City Of Sydney' one day.
Bubblegum punk classic ⚡️🩷
You missed the intro! (Drums). That's what kicks us off
sorry about that
Still touring today, minus Fergal.
It's widely known that the song's about Masturbation.
at last tuuuune
I'm sorry guys Kia Ora hello and yippee i hear this song and i get a lump in my throat i love it ❤️
The undertones where a great band, until they changed their name to fergal Sharkey, love teenage kicks , more! 🏴✌️
I didn't mind them as That Patrol Emotion
@@DogInSpacewasnt sure any would remember That Petrol Emotion , their self named track is AWESOME Doginspace ✊
👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering I've been following the more leftfield music since '73. I still listen the newest and outthere music to this day.
@@DogInSpace great way to live your life sir ✊
👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering I did sell my entire record collection to support a drug habit ..🙄 and most of my record collection are of things released after I kicked the habit. I never got back to listening to any 70's punk except for a few aussie things here and there, and even they bring some disturbing memories. That Buzzcocks song just made me feel dead inside which was the way I felt when I last listened to it in 1979.
Are these punk or new wave?
Apparently it's a song about masturbation!!!! 🎶🤔🤩🙌👍😉
Your ginger boy always has something to say about the good videos
Not watching this one. While John Peel was still alive, BBC2 did a tribute night to him for his 60th birthday, Somebody obviously thought it was clever to use this as "stings" over and over again thoughout the night. As a result, I became so sick of this song that I never want to hear it again and would vote for anyone who promised to track down and destroy every copy in existence.
You're mad
@@andrewlane8105They drove me to it.
