Totally agree with the "support the author" part. I've been following One Piece for at least 16 years, and recently I made my mind, saved some money and bought all the Mangá box set (not all at once because it is expensive). Imo it was worth it since Oda gave me so much joy with One Piece through all this years.

Japan being tolerant of scanlations honestly reminds me of the relationship doujinshi artists have with the publishing companies TECHNICALLY it's copyright infiringement, but unless the manga artists complain they don't have an issue with it because they recognise that a lot of mainstream manga artists started by drawing doujinshi and that the sales of doujinshi don'r affect their sales usually and potentially even help them.

They release the volumes online, but only at the same time as the physical ones. For context it’s not as bad as in other languages (poor Norwegians), but still the Japanese one is at 107 while the German one is at 105. that‘s a difference of about 20 chapters I think and lemme not even start on the anime. To make it short, I don’t know a single One Piece Fan over here who doesn’t read the English scans. But I know a ton who still go out of their way to buy the official releases afterwards.

Although the fan base has become bigger than 10 years ago, manga and anime are still underappreciated here in Norway and Scandinavia. Generally, Norwegians don't watch animated stuff (typically from the US) unless they are with children.
I started reading the scanlated versions because if this channel. I didnt really want to, i was perfectly happy reading it on the jump site each sunday, but the videos about new chapters just kept getting earlier til it got to the point where i had to read the early scans or stop watching grand line

But then i still see it on my feed. Quite unfortunate as i used to religiously watch Liam's videos back when he only did reviews after the official release came out. I don't blame him. Most of his viewers read scans do he has to cater yo lem or lose a massive chunk of his audience to someone who doesn't wait.
I read scans but at the same time I have already bought 90 volumes of one piece, the scans for me are a way to read one piece before the volumes are available in my country, I’m not paying for the monthly subscription simply because I want to buy all the volumes and I get supporting the creator, but at the same time I don’t want to pay twice for the same content :’)
I used to read the official translation weekly. One day this channel started posting early scanlation videos and I had to start reading them. I didn't realize why or how the culture had changed but I remember the moment very well. Now I go a month or so and read mostly scans and then read the latest chapters on Viz during a break week. As a person who abandoned Scanlations many years ago (I got sick of people arguing about the scan groups translations, only for the official to come out and clear it up) something like this has been a LONG time coming. I spent years thinking Jump came out on thursday, and I know I wasnt the only one
I like this because I avoid early leaks and such. I always want my first experience with a new chapter to be the official translation, and I don't mind being patient, but it means I never get to join the discussion in GLR comments because by the time I read the chapter, the video with everyone's comments and insights is already published. :(
I don’t think the watermarking/leaker culture is much a business move as you suggest. It seems like these people go into this business purely for attension seeking behavoir. The best example is the Jujutsu Kaisen leaker who will hold onto the leaks constantly posting “5 hours until leaks drop!!!” When he had them the whole time, hosting basically an event where he shares the leaks 1 page at a time, asks everyone to thank him for it constantly, etc. We definately see a lot of these same traits with the one piece leakers as well and people kinda have to give them the attension they want to see the leaks. It makes sense too because no reasonable person would enter into this small profit margin, extremely dangerous field of work unless you have a couple of screws loose

I had a funny experience last year. My wife and I went to Japan for two weeks and I found out that the scan-lation sites I use are blocked in Japan so I actually had to wait longer to read One Piece when it was in the country it's created in.
Back in May 2020, I was working on a Convini in Japan during Sunday nights. A guy used to arrive around 3am with a bunch of magazines and newspapers, Jump among them. I had to go and have nice and organized. I wish I were into One Piece back then.
I'm curious, you always post on community the one piece chapter release the day it's released by scan groups, usually on Thursday and even make your reviews before the official viz manga drops how do you get hold of manga legally and review it before the official release? I might be missing something, but I'm just asking out of curiosity
I am more of a scan guy myself, just because that's when all the RUclips videos start coming out. Thankfully the nuances between chapters are made clear due to consistent injections of One Piece culture in my RUclips feed. Although I don't always read the official, I do have a Viz membership to read other things in Shonen Jump, and I support the series whenever possible by buying merch and terrorizing all my friends by constantly telling them to read One Piece.
I'm French and personally i read the chapter on a site that is affiliate to Glénat which is the editor of One piece in France. The chapter is kinda available as promotion then is off fews days later. I'm then buying the collection bit by bit in my life and read it with my coffee in in one hell of a confortable chair :) Started in 2002 as a 10 years old, jesus. Just take it easy guys it's a long run with Oda sensei no need to ruch just appreciate it! Thanx for your work!
If you are caught up in One Piece, at least in Canada, VIZ/Shonen Jump release official translations on Sunday morning and it is free. They leave the last 3 chapters free at all times
"The correct way" of reading one piece is to read it however you can, but as someone who has read some really bad scans I totally encourage people to try and read from at least ONE source with nice quality images, even if you need to read the same issue twice.

Personally I read scanlations on Thursdays and the official translations when they release. VIZ have had some shaky translations back in the day, but when different scanlations disagree on certain points, having an official translation to clarify is nice.

The best way Viz can take people back to reading official is by making better translations. TCB always takes into consideration the personality of characters and their manner of speaking, while Viz gives it to you in the blandest way possible. That and, you know, "Zolo"

They exist between the printing house and the retailers, such as bookstores and convenience stores, and are the intermediaries between the producers and the sellers. Imma be honest I think the best the leaks ever got was that we would get the fan translations on Friday and get the official on Sunday so we had 2 days to theorize before the official came out
I started watching One Piece years ago. At the beginning of the Zou Arc. So I’ve been caught up a while. I can never find the time to watch weekly anymore with my job and my family. The scans and leaks are perfect for me because I can still keep up with what’s happening for the most part and it saves a lot of time. Not to mention I can just read the scans on my phone at work.
I do have a problem with it personally, I don’t understand how people can’t just wait for a new chapter to come out. Like knowing 4 days prior or official release is going to change/mean anything.

Been a viz member for about 3 years or so now, and now i avoid watching your chapter reviews until after release day. I like you am not saying what I do is morally superior, but i do like to make sure my support for the content is known... And then i buy the massive boxes of one piece after, currently waiting for there to be enough volumes for a 5th box set to be announced! Honestly i have nothing against scan readers, but i hope they support what they love in some way as well as getting early access to what they love. Especially the ones providing the scans.

GLR, could you talk about the famous fake scans of One Piece? I remember chapter 538 where they made a story that for Ivankov to save Luffy from the poison, he had to become a woman forever and the chapter ended with the female version of Luffy.
To be honest I read scans online on thursday but still buy the volumes when they release in the UK as a means to support the official work where I can. I think that's the fairest way I can support Oda and co while loving One Piece as much as I do.
I look at the early scans but also have a subscription to viz and like to compare the difference in translations sometimes, I love OP and everyone involved
As a german it blows my mind how close we are to the latest one piece content. In march we get vol. 106 and the anime is currently around episode 1050 and in 2024 we'll get 50 new episodes. The anime with ger dub is only available on tv or disc. After a 5 year break, it took 10 years, a new tv channel and at least 50 episodes a year to get at this point
I’ve blocked pew piece many months ago. Now i only read the tcb scans that are available like three days before the shonen app releases the english translation. But i do still read the official’s still every Sunday morning.
I will never understand why people look at those easily text only leaks, you get an objectively inferior experience and you still have to wait the same 1 week for the next chapter.

If you are caught up in One Piece, at least in Canada, VIZ/Shonen Jump release official translations on Sunday morning and it is free. They leave the last 3 chapters free at all times

"The correct way" of reading one piece is to read it however you can, but as someone who has read some really bad scans I totally encourage people to try and read from at least ONE source with nice quality images, even if you need to read the same issue twice.

Personally I read scanlations on Thursdays and the official translations when they release.
VIZ have had some shaky translations back in the day, but when different scanlations disagree on certain points, having an official translation to clarify is nice.
I always read the official Viz translation. I do it every week, because I love One Piece, and I want to support the official release.

The best way Viz can take people back to reading official is by making better translations. TCB always takes into consideration the personality of characters and their manner of speaking, while Viz gives it to you in the blandest way possible. That and, you know, "Zolo"

Thanks to time zone shenanigans I read the one piece official translation Sunday afternoon.
Imma be honest I think the best the leaks ever got was that we would get the fan translations on Friday and get the official on Sunday so we had 2 days to theorize before the official came out
I started watching One Piece years ago. At the beginning of the Zou Arc. So I’ve been caught up a while. I can never find the time to watch weekly anymore with my job and my family. The scans and leaks are perfect for me because I can still keep up with what’s happening for the most part and it saves a lot of time. Not to mention I can just read the scans on my phone at work.
This has happened to comics since forever. Marvel and DC tried to evade this for about 30 years now. It's failed every time.
I do have a problem with it personally, I don’t understand how people can’t just wait for a new chapter to come out. Like knowing 4 days prior or official release is going to change/mean anything.

Been a viz member for about 3 years or so now, and now i avoid watching your chapter reviews until after release day. I like you am not saying what I do is morally superior, but i do like to make sure my support for the content is known... And then i buy the massive boxes of one piece after, currently waiting for there to be enough volumes for a 5th box set to be announced! Honestly i have nothing against scan readers, but i hope they support what they love in some way as well as getting early access to what they love. Especially the ones providing the scans.

GLR, could you talk about the famous fake scans of One Piece? I remember chapter 538 where they made a story that for Ivankov to save Luffy from the poison, he had to become a woman forever and the chapter ended with the female version of Luffy.

To be honest I read scans online on thursday but still buy the volumes when they release in the UK as a means to support the official work where I can. I think that's the fairest way I can support Oda and co while loving One Piece as much as I do.
I look at the early scans but also have a subscription to viz and like to compare the difference in translations sometimes, I love OP and everyone involved

As a german it blows my mind how close we are to the latest one piece content. In march we get vol. 106 and the anime is currently around episode 1050 and in 2024 we'll get 50 new episodes. The anime with ger dub is only available on tv or disc. After a 5 year break, it took 10 years, a new tv channel and at least 50 episodes a year to get at this point

I’ve blocked pew piece many months ago. Now i only read the tcb scans that are available like three days before the shonen app releases the english translation. But i do still read the official’s still every Sunday morning.
I will never understand why people look at those easily text only leaks, you get an objectively inferior experience and you still have to wait the same 1 week for the next chapter.
