  • The One Little Problem With Assassin's Creed Origins
    Shouldering the responsibility of saving the entire series, Assassin's Creed Origins does a lot of things right, but hides it all behind a persistent grind designed to squeeze more money out of you.
    Buy Me A Coffee: www.buymeacoffee.com/borangedunn
    Assassin's Creed Origins is a 2017 action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the tenth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, following 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Principally set in Egypt, near the end of the Ptolemaic period from 49 to 43 BC, the story follows a Medjay named Bayek of Siwa and his wife Aya as they seek revenge for the murder of their son, and explores the origins of the millennia-long conflict between the Hidden Ones-forerunners to the Assassin Brotherhood, and the Order of the Ancients-forerunners to the Templar Order. The framing story, set in the 21st century, follows a new character, Layla Hassan, who relives Bayek and Aya's memories using a modified Animus device.
    The game's development began following the release of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag in 2013. Ubisoft Montreal led its four-year development with help from a team of nearly 700 people from other Ubisoft studios around the world. The team consulted Egyptologists and historians extensively to ensure the setting was authentically represented in the game. In response to the common criticism that the gameplay of the series was getting stale and overly familiar, Ubisoft decided to reinvent the Assassin's Creed formula with Origins. Whereas previous entries were mainly stealth-action games, Origins introduces many elements found in role-playing games and an overhauled "hitbox-based" combat system. While Assassin's Creed had been an annual franchise since Assassin's Creed II (2009), an extra year of development time allowed the team to polish the game further. This was largely a response to the tepid sales of Syndicate, and the troubled launch of Assassin's Creed Unity, which was plagued with technical issues when it was released in 2014.
    Announced at E3 2017, Origins was released on October 27, 2017, for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, and for Stadia on December 15, 2020. It received positive reviews from critics, with many calling it an improvement over previous entries and praising the story, characters, voice acting, reworked gameplay systems, world design, historical accuracy, and the visuals. However, the game also drew criticism for its pacing, quest design, and technical issues. The game has sold over ten million units worldwide and was nominated for several end-of-year accolades. Ubisoft supported Origins extensively following its launch, releasing two story expansions-The Hidden Ones and Curse of the Pharaohs-and a free Discovery Tour mode, which removes all combat from the game and allows players to learn about the history and culture of Ptolemaic Egypt through a series of guided tours. Its successor, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which is set in Classical Greece during the Peloponnesian War, was released in October 2018, expanding on the revamped gameplay and continuing the new framing story.

    The grind is about to get WORSE. I used Cheat Engine to give myself double XP in Odyssey and leveling still felt slower than Origins.

      Funnily enough I've just been looking at reinstalling cheat engine for Origins so I can give the DLC a go. I thought there'd be new quests with decent xp rewards in the high-level areas but they're all just a vast expanse of nothing with a viewpoint at one end 😫

      The core problem with modern AC is that the length of the games has tripled while the amount of meaningful content has remained the same
      It was refreshing to go back to AC2 and finish most of the story and side content in just 20 hours

      @@alphagamer9505 its fine for people that like doing additional content and exploring but absolute horror for people that just want to play only the story. im a completionist and a explorer type gamer too so for me it was not an issue either. Its pretty clear the devs intended for people to explore as much of the world as possible and also so they can sell stuff for the impatient gamers that cant control themselves lol

    Never had a problem with levels in this game since I'm a gamer that explores a lot and does this additional content. In fact I was overleveled a lot of the game haha and if that happens theres a setting that makes enemies scale to your level if you wish so. I get that some people like to just beeline the story but that was not clearly something the devs intended people to do.

    Love that game, the grind wasn't a problem for me and I did every ounce of side content. It was my first AC type game and I just got a PS4 Pro. I don't think I can ever recreate that feeling of playing that game after getting a console for the first time, it was pure magic for me.

    6:16 Aya does "rename" herself to Amunet in an ending cutscene of the base game and her killing Cleopatra is shown in a comic after the games release

    • @borangedunn
      @borangedunn  8 месяцев назад +3

      You're right, I'd forgotten about that bit in the cutscene. It's a shame an assassination import enough to make a statue of is only covered in a comic. They could have put it in this game or at least the DLC.

    • @ShrapnelProductionHD
      @ShrapnelProductionHD 8 месяцев назад +4

      @@borangedunn Agreed, they could have done a DLC for her at least. Also as you have noted it does feel like it should have been Aya as the protag, many people have noted the same thing, Aya does seem to be the proactive one while Bayek seems more reactive. Most people chalk it up to the higher ups thinking a female protagonist wont sell when the game was planned out.

    • @borangedunn
      @borangedunn  8 месяцев назад +2

      @@ShrapnelProductionHD That sounds about right. Feels like Kassandra should have been the only protagonist in Odyssey, and it seems like most people feel the same. I've only just started Valhalla but they both feel a bit lacklustre so far...

    • @ShrapnelProductionHD
      @ShrapnelProductionHD 8 месяцев назад

      @@borangedunn from what I was able to gather both characters in Odyssey have basically the same dialogue choices. I have heard there's a few differences in some cases when talking to NPCs but nothing that changes the plot. I have also heard that Kassandra's voiceover is better quality than Alexios but in my limited time playing I wasn't able to really notice, probably a skill issue on my part. In Valhalla it is confirmed that Kassandra is the canonical one, although for me it felt kind of disconnected to have a female mercenary that acts the way the character does in the story. Different times and attitudes and all that. Now if Kassandra had more of a spy role with intrigue and changing disguises kind of what you can do in AC Liberation I would have a super easy time buying it (probably would also jive better with the classic AC fans too). On the note of Valhalla its all but confirmed that Eivor is meant to be female because of the last name "Varinsdottir". Sons get "son" at the end of the last name while daughters get the "dottir" so that's a nice little nod from the devs for those who know where to look.

      @@borangedunnI believe a former Ubisoft developer is on the record saying Bayek was supposed to be killed off early in the original story, and Aya would have been the MC for the rest of the game.

    Idk brah, i didn't feel like i ever had to grind. I was having fun playing the game...I dont get why people pay for a game and want to rush the process. Idk i got a natural way of playing every game that just happens. Idk if its b/c ive been playing games for a long time or what but when i 1st start a new game im kind of lost & trying to figure everything out & usually the safest quickest way is doing the main quest so i just play the main quest & little by little they kind of walk u through different things & after maybe 5 or 6 missions then i want to go out own my own & start doing the open world things whether it be side missions, collecting materials to craft, getting money, buying clothes, etc. Basically i create my own missions by doin things that i don't have to do but things that will make the game easier in thr long run & those things are the things that level u up & gets u money without that even being the goal...Me goin around doing all the synchronizing points isn't something i have to do, its just something i enjoy doing, but it comes with xp, but even if it didnt i still would do it. I spent hours 1 time doing nothing but hunting for crafting materials to upgrade my weapons like my hidden blade power, arrow damage, the amount of tools i can carry, etc. I was having fun doin that. Actually i didn't start doin a whole lot of side missions until i fell in love with the game. I had did a decent amount but once i realized how much i loved it & didn't want it to be over, i started doing way more. Also when i found out what the title he held meant & wjat the patch of the eye on his arm meant. He was basically at service of the people. Thats his job b4 being an assassin. His original job was to serve & protect the people, just like police officers, so the side missions fit in perfectly with the story & who he is...Doing these different things is also how u explore the map. Thats how i like to explore. I dont like randomly going to somewhere exploring. I like it to be a purpose why in there,. So i never felt the grind. I think now days everybody has ADHD & have no patience..i play games for the experience

    The reason that man said “Caesar is the father of understanding” is because earlier that man was telling Caesar “the he is now a god” and the father of understanding in AC lore is a all encompassing way of respecting everyone’s different beliefs and gods and just mashing it into a easy smooth catchphrase so that guy is basically telling you that ceasar is now a god and therefore is “The father of understanding” also as the man saying it believes ceasar to be a god therefore it fits accurately in the way he says it although idk if they did that on purpose but it is a nice hidden detail that makes it fit more but yeah it’s also a thing that is referenced in the ac games somewhere maybe AC3 or something random like that yk cuz I don’t read the comics and all that but maybe I saw it in a video on RUclips but yeah your welcome amazing videos by the way I hope I was able to help you my fellow hidden one/assassin 😂

Park our perfection if you actually understand how to utilize it , secret underground hide out a cafe’ to fix up with a mansion attached, secret assassin uniform room , actual stealth, badass animations , 1:1 scale world everything in it , crime scenes to investigate suspects to blame , mysteries , then we have the cheap claymation simplified trash of origins odyssey Valhalla and mirage won’t touch them .

    AC has taught me that the fan base is just split between those who want a linear experience and those who want an explorative somewhat sandbox experience.
    I can assure you none of the modern AC games feel like a grind. It took me the same amount of time in hours calculation to beat AC2 that it took to beat AC Origins or Odyssey. Side quests are optional for those who want to explore.

    All 3 of the recent entries require either playing on PC and cheat engine to avoid the extreme grind, or paying a shit ton of real money for helix credits to satisfy your gaming OCD & keeping your gear up with your level with "timesavers". Not an acceptable design choice IMHO.
    The advantage Origins had is that you can use in game currency to buy randomised chests/loot boxes and with cheats/trainers get all of the Legendary gear without having to buy any Helix credits. If you have the patience. In Odyssey, they shut that out by using online currency in the form of orichalcum & trickle feed it to you. The amount of weood/iron/obsidian required to take a single Legendary item from lvl 1 to lvl 99 in Odyssey is horrendous. And an armour set has 5 pieces. Then there's the ship. And while there seems to be a max cap of how much things can cost when jumping multiple levels, if you're trying to stay within a couple of levels of the character, it's about 1000 drachmae per level.
    One armour set will cost ~$500,000 to level up. I have 21...

      Not at all. Beat origins and odyssey in 30 hrs total playtime (around the same as the older games) without a cheat engine or buying xp boost. Shit odyssey is extremely generous with the XP compared to Origins.
      Plus these games aren’t meant to speed run. Although I u derstand there’s a fan base that does like it. They’re a minority

    I’m playing through this now. Currently at L31.
    I played Odyssey first and actually finished that massive game. Compared to Odyssey, I feel Origins lacks real skills or abilities or whatever we’re calling them. Odyssey has that nice system where you can setup two sets of powered abilities for fighting and another set for your bow. That system really helps deploy your “superpowers” to punch above your weight to defeat groups of higher power enemies or a boss.
    There’s nothing like that in Origins though, so I feel really limited by my level in what I can take on…
    Also the story overall is just not as interesting to me. I felt much more invested and intrigued by the story in Odyssey and thoroughly enjoyed tracking down all those cult members, finding mom, confronting the brother, sailing around with my crew of singing Greek warriors, finding mysterious islands.
    All that stuff made Odyssey feel like I was in a Ray Harryhausen sword and sandal adventure movie…

      @@leeroynaggins AC Origins is more of a linear story like the prequels. It's kinda easy to grasp what is going on. Valhalla and Odyssey weren't what I hoped for story wise because of the multiple choice option. If it was added in the side quests, that'd have been better. As a stand alone RPG, Valhalla and Odyssey are awesome but not as AC games.

    imo the grind felt worse in origins than odyssey due to the [for me] more same-y environment, and also after a certain point combat feels really unrewarding in origins. Also origins has an awful grind spike at the end of the game, which is really annoying and at least for me ruined the tension building in the story at that point. Odyssey felt a bit better in that regard since there was at least some background as to why you'd help civilians, and also more reliable rewards that weren't just xp.
