  • WWII, an RAF Bristol Beaufort bomber was shot down and its crew were taken prisoners-of-war. They over-powered the crew of the Italian transport plane, and flew it back to their base.

    My father was in 217 Sqdn flying Beauforts prior to their posting to Malta (this probably helped him survive the war as he became a radio instructor at RAF Millom). He joined up in 1938 and joined Coastal Command flying Ansons, later converting to Beauforts in 1941. I still have his logbook and full Irvine flying suit.

    South African pilot ,English Navigator , Two New Zealanders . All survived the war .

    Great story, my grandad told me this story about 30 years ago, he was based in Malta at that time flying beauforts, he also has it recorded as a note in his flight book.
