I've been waiting for a way to jump into Savage dragon, I'm so happy to hear about this
Never read Savage Dragon but this looks INSANE!
Yes, Kirkman helped make this book happen.
I asked Erik Larsen on the now-defunct Image forums about why the Megaton Man crossover has never collected in its entirety, he said he felt it was goofy, and disliked having a sideways spread in the middle of it. Sounds like Don Simpson is talking with Fantagraphics about doing a Megaton Man Omnibus, hopefully it gets included there.
So psyched this is finally coming out! - Quick correction though - this edition includes the extended 5-issue ‘The Dragon’ series, not the originally published 3-issue mini. The images in the back Omar refers to as pin-ups are the covers to that series. Erik has also confirmed that Jim Lees Savage Dragon will not be included as Lee retained the publication rights and it is now owned by DC. But his version will be used.
Ah thank you for the clarification. And man, I was hoping both would be collected.
@@NearMintCondition thanks for the overview! I just hope he decide to include the Sex & Violence mini.
@Near Mint Condition It is 13 issues total. The 5 issue mini and the first 8 of the ongoing.
Thanks 4 this video. I ordered 2 copies. I became such a huge Erik Larsen fan in the last few years and regret not collecting this when it originally came out.
Hey Omar! I've been organizing my single issues to sell and figuring out what to keep and ran across my Savage Dragon stuff. Check this collection against the original 3 issue mini series and you'll see there are pages in this collection that are NOT in the mini series. What this collection actually reprints is "The Dragon" 1-5, a mini series that re-ordered and expanded the original 3 issue mini series. If you check the right hand page at 7:27 where Frank is in silhouette you'll see that's one of the pages not in the original 3 issue mini series. Also, the pages in the back that you refer to as "pin ups" are the covers to the 5 issue "The Dragon" mini series.
Thank you so much for that info sir!
Thank you for this. I’m always worried that the covers won’t be included. This will be a must buy now.
I was 15 when the first issue came out and I've been collecting the book since then ! The story is so well built, the different art styles Larsen have experienced (inking, colors, art style...) over the years, this incredible letter column, all the other characters, everything makes it one of the best book out there. The respect Larsen shows to all crossovers and guest-starring, eveything matters and fits somewhere. The real-time thing is absolutely great, Dragon eventually grow old, has a child, childs grow to teenagers, and so on... The first 100 issues have so many clues and leads and twists here and there, this is so much better that "Cop-Hulk" may feel !
Whew! I used to love reading Savage Dragon. This brought back a few memories. I’m definitely buying this. Thanks for the video.
Same, brother. Same!
The "pin-ups" after the covers for the 3 issue mini-series are the covers for the five issue 99 cent Dragon series that reprinted the first trade paperback back in 94 or 95
Thank you for that.
Still my favorite bok image has ever released. Erik Larsen is a gem. Also, great vids, thanx a ton ! Peace !
Savage Dragon ultimate collections...next stop the Maxx Compendium!
I've honestly never read this or any other Image series from the '90s, but I sure remember the short-lived cartoon show, lol.
Cool review. This should be a real treat as I never read Savage Dragon.
Been looking forward to this for a while now. My copy was due yesterday but got delayed until the 21st which sucks. I hope they get to do the whole series in this format, as a 90s kid who grew up reading the early image titles it would be cool to be able to collect the whole series in ohc.
Hi Omar
Definitely buying this because of your review. There is a different cover available in Canada and it is really cool.
Jeff
Omar. Great Review and thank You for sharing those memories. I got the essentials (the telephone books You Say) because I have always love Erik Larsen art and for me he was the ultimate drawer of Spider-Man (the same as Mari Bagley) over Mcfarlane. The first issues had a lot of images from Revenge of the Sinister Six. I would have prefer that the covers should have been between each issues, at least they are at the back and they include the title. Finally, Sácate Dragon appear first on the pages of Marvel Comics Present #50, is not he? Thank You for the video, I can't wait for My book. Thank You!
I read that savage dragon tmnt comic over and over again as a kid
Patiently waiting for somewhere in the uk to get this I’m stock so stoked to read 🙌🙌
Yep got this one coming 💪😁. Been waiting for this to come out.
Hope you like it! Also how have you been, brother?
@@NearMintCondition it's the Savage Dragon I know it will be 90s goodness. Working like always brother.
My Image ultimate collection hit list
Savage Dragon vol.2
Pitt
Young blood
I really enjoyed the series back when it originally came out and I'm looking forward to cracking open this book this weekend. About issue 13, Erik was on Omnibros and said issue 13 will be his version that was released later. He said he couldn't include the 13 by Jim Lee due to rights issues. Only thing to make this better would have been to include the letterpages but oh well.
Pre-Ordered this thing so fast, when i heard of it beeing published.
Loved reading Dragon when it came out, this and Gen13 were my jam growing up.
Heard that vol2 is coming out in may already, can't wait to have a nice collection,
instead of having a look out on his previous published out of print hardcovers.
a bit sad that he didn't use the cover he came out with innitially, but this one works as well.
Of all the earliest image titles, I read and reread Savage Dragon more than Spawn, Wildcats, or Youngblood. Until Wetworks came out, this was one of my favorite titles.
The whole super-dude becoming a cop and fighting evil super-dudes reminded me of Robocop, a bit, a movie I was a huge fan of, and - like Robocop - it was pretty violent, especially for a teenager. This could make a great film, so long as they steered clear of his origin and just kept it a mystery.
Also, idk about anyone else, but I prefer the covers to be where they should be, as opposed to in the back of a collection. I know a lot of collections do this, but I find it distracting, especially when the next issue doesn't pick up exactly where the previous one left off. Just a small nitpick
So this is what he has been doing, instead of putting out new issues.
Peep that Omnibus you compared it to!
I'm excited for that x-men adventures omni.
Per the comments about issue #13 with Jim Lee art. Larsen drew his own version of that issue, so I would bet that will be included and Lee's version will either not be included or included as a bonus feature.
Yup, you're right, Larson mentioned that his version would be included instead of Lee's in a recent podcast about the collections.
Love Erik when he's not spouting off on politics and social issues. Sometimes it's better when you only know your favorite creators through their comics and not from their social media accounts. Purchased this book on InStockTrades directly after watching this vid!
Glad they are doing these series in collected volumes. I just wish Image still owned Wildcats.
Or at least get some WildCATS by Moore collection.
I hope DC reprints the Image Wildcats books in omnibuses or compendiums
Really wish DC would either reprint Absolute Wildcats by Jim Lee or release it in a deluxe edition hc. Plus a bunch of the other Wildcats and Wildstorm comics. I used to love those.
@Near Mint Condition Not sure what it means, but DC just got done digitizing WildC.A.T.s & stopped literally before Moore's run. Might be something going on there preventing/delaying any reproduction.
This is one of the few collection I still keep the floppies (I have the first +100 issues). I really love this series so I might be purchasing this.
Question: does this hardcover include the original 3 issue miniseries or the reworked 5 issues miniseries Larsen released later on?
Also, there are 2 issue 13s, one by Jim lee and one by Larsen so he could keep the full series uninterrupted. I wonder if volume 2 will include both.
There was a Saturday morning cartoon too.
About time!
Omg I didn’t know this was coming out🤩🤩 I didn’t wanted to buy the savage dragon archives cause of the black and white
Just ordered mine, can’t wait. The series has dropped off a bit, but I’ve been happily collecting it for 30 years at this point, so I’m in for the long haul
Where did u order it?
wow thats incredible. how many deluxe volumes to include all 30 years?
@@taviscardenas1048 just Amazon
WHEN are we getting this treatment for Liefeld’s 10-issue run of Youngblood?
He lost the rights sadly.
I'm Waaaaay pumped for this! It was my fav image comic too! I've waited a long time for this. Happy to see the meaty extras section. Also...I might be crazy but I'm noticing some color differences in the original min series. Could it have been re-colored to match the original issues? I'm seeing some different highlights? Maybe just looks different on video. Any how So pumped for this and hoping they keep pumping the volumes out! MUST BUY FOR ME!
Oh! They credit "Color restoration" on the credits page. I wonder what the story is about that.
Other than Will ferrel, I had no clue what a savage dragon was. Im here for this and will check it out. Thanks Omar.
Edit: Probably a DEEP cut, I know. Lol
Deep cut indeed. :)
@@NearMintCondition Lol! I knew Uncle Omar would get it.
Always wanted to get into Savage Dragon, this seems to be a great start point. Sure hope these volumes will keep coming out, will be so many... and why does DC think going for the New52 Supes movie way is a good thing.. (sorry my mind drifted a bit :p)
This is going to run SO MANY volumes. Still, sure looks great.
Right? We are talking 11-13 issues a book...woof. But man, what a ride.
It’d be 20 volumes of this size just to get to current day. I really hope these sell well and subsequent volumes continue to be released.
@@NearMintCondition I'm actually hoping future volumes won't have as many extras, leaving room for more issues per release.
Take my money!
Looks so nice. Just don't want to commit to 20 volumes haha!
there was a stretch in there where his artwork just blew. I remember I stopped buying it during that period. Not sure what happened, but he was just not putting a lot of effort into the art at that time. It would be tough buying a collected volume of those issues
Kevin Smith's praise is just a bunch of crying emojis. Lol!
Definitely looking forward to checking this. And nice X-Men Animated Series tease.
God I can’t stand Kevin smith.
Maybe too soon to ask, but what're we thinking vol. 2 will collect? This one only has 13 issues (maybe 14 if you count all the back-ups as one). Figure vol. 2 might collect SD #9-21 when the Overlord saga is finished? That would be 13 issues, so makes sense no? I hope they manage to churn out two volumes a year at least. The 30s and 40s issues are favorites of mine. Too bad the "Freak Force" and spin-off minis likely won't be collected, those were great too.
I'd expect / hope that it would include both versions of SD #13, as well as WildCATS 14. Definitely wondering if he will integrate any of the 'extended universe'(Freak Force), the non-Larsen minis, or the other TMNT crossovers
@@cullenn2100 I doubt he'd include the non-Larsen version of #13 since he's been vocal about not liking it at all. With DC owning WildStorm, I imagine including that "WildC.A.T.s" issue would be difficult too. I'd love to have the Jason Pearson + Mike S. Miller SD minis and the "Star" ones collected somehow, but not holding my breath.
@@juanj.arroyo870 WildCATS issues were included in the Cyberforce Complete Collection, published by Image, so I don't think it would be too hard (not in comparison to other more stubborn licensing situations). And though Larsen may not like the Lee issue, he also was vocally against this kind of deluxe SD reprint, yet here we are.
I'm not sure if I want this or not. I had all the early issues and really enjoyed Dragon, was very entertaining but I did eventually stop reading it. Looks like a neat collection though and nicely put together, so tempted ....
Also - just noticed, different cover on Amazon, are there two versions?
Looks great but the spine looks pretty weird. Its really hard to tell what it says and looks like a barcode from far away. Im hoping its easier to see and read in person
All of the Tpb releases of this series did not have the covers in between the issues. They where always in the back.
Wrong on the Jim Lee issue, Eric Larsen re-drew the whole thing and released his version. Really wonder how it'll get collected in the next volume.
Wait. So you're saying that Jim didn't draw Dragon? Because I may be old...but my brain still remember those images in issue 13.
@@NearMintCondition there’s 2 versions of that issue, one is by Jim Lee
@@NearMintCondition Jim Lee did 13 originally but then Larsen went back and redrew his version later because he didn't want to miss an issue. There are 2 versions. Kinda funny but cool too, Larsen loves his Savage Dragon.
Also, Erik straight up said he didn't like the issue Lee did & has ignored it since. It's not even available digitally.
@@chuckenigma That's too bad, I remember liking that the Image guys all traded books that month. I hope both are in the next hc but from what you said I wouldn't be surprised if the Lee 13 was left out.
The font on that spine is unreadable. What a shame. Nice to see the Dragon being collected properly.
Yeah it really is, I got the book and love the contents, but that spine is a damn shame - terrible font!
Erik went back and made his own issue 13, so I doubt the Jim lee issue will be in the next volume.
Im sure I preordered this like 10 years ago on amazon 😆
I thought the same thing.
I preordered this through amazon in the UK and it's been delayed twice 😭
How many pages is this
His version of savage dragon is great. I wish he would do a run on the hulk. Could be fun.
Get the Revenge of the Sinister Six. His Hulk is phenomenal.
Are there two covers? I can't find the red issue #1 cover anywhere but ebay. CGN and Amazon are only showing a cover with Dragomn coming straight at you. Is this the same release?
Same book. Originally solicited with the coming at you cover and then actually published with the running from right to left cover
@@Madbmberwhatbmbsatmidnight Thank you very much. I knew it was the same contents, just wanted to make sure I got the cover I preferred.
We need The Maxx omnibus. Nothing represents the 90's grit and edginess like Sam Kieth's & William Messner-Loebs work.
19:21 actually, Erik Larsen doesn't have the rights to Jim Lee's Savage Dragon, DC Comics does (via their buyout of WildStorm). It almost certainly won't be included in the Ultimate Collections.
Are these the "unwieldy books"?
Id much rather have 50 issue soft cover compendium like theyre doing with spawn.
The Jim Lee issue won't be on the next volume. Erik Larsen doesn't own the rights. But he does own the rights to the Wildcats issue he did.
So did savage dragon get canceled recently, heard someone say 264 is last issue, or that bad info?
Probably bad info.
Lol, doubt it. Savage Dragon is Eric Larsen's baby and he is so close to breaking the issue 300 by a single creator mark... Like Spawn but all actually written and drawn by him.
Yeah, bad info. Issues have been slow to come out the last 2 years. 2022 only has had 2 of them. Putting this hardcover together soaked up a couple months of his time. 263 through 265 are solicited and 263 should be out in January or February at the latest.
I think these video tags are actually for DIE by Kieran Gillen for some reason?
Thank you. And odd.
@@NearMintCondition fixed now! :) great vid, getting me intrigued on the character!

Wow
I know, I should win a Nobel prize
Will a No-prize be good enough? I always wanted one.
Well u won. Here is your cookie. 🍪
@@NearMintCondition U DEFINITELY won the Nobel prize. Imo, a "No prize" mention is worth it's weight in gold. 🤷

Bro pls do "the invisible Iron Man vol 1"
The Fraction run?
I'm intrigued, but when you say "derogatory comments," do you mean homophobia?
I can think of once and then two other parts with slang that isn’t used in media anymore. Which is weird because it’s not like people stopped saying those things. But I didn’t think about it until rereading the book.
@@NearMintCondition I mean, people I know stopped saying those things. It's a deal-breaker for me, but thanks for the heads up.
You hang around the right crowd! I’ve worked some ummm interesting places.
@@ineffablejoy I'm surprised Larsen didn't alter the text to be more in line with his current sociopolitical views, then. He's about as liberal as they come. Might end up cancelling himself at this point.
"the exact same IMAGE" heh
Dad jokes just can't help but come out.
Might get even though not the biggest fan of this series.
I never read Savage Dragon because i thought he was going to be a bootleg Hulk
I think thats a very common misconception.
@@NearMintCondition thank god after reading invincible since him and his cast appeared in the book I gave Dragon's books a chance and I'm now a fan of him
That's Pitt. 😁
@@Krypton_Ken wasn't there a one shot comic where Hulk fights Pitt
@@ChamarM Yeah, it was a prestige format book, I think Peter David even wrote it alongside the Keown art.
Way too slim for a series with such a large number of issues to collect.
Was about to buy this untill i saw that Eric Larson turned savage dragon into a porn comic for perverts
Does he have to be a savage dragon? Can't he be woke dragon and speak his truth?
But what would that make Conan's Sword?
Savage dragon suck in all ways posible.
Have to give this 3 Barfs! Larson is such an unlikable tool I can’t imagine giving him money.
I'm not familiar with him. What makes you say that?
Omar, I think you're doing a disservice to your audience by not warning them that the Savage Dragon series eventually degenerates into hardcore p0rn by issue 200, some of it involving children and r&pe, all played up for laughs. A lot of your audience is underage, and Savage Dragon is a series I could never recommend simply for how sick and depraved Erik Larsen is. Savage Dragon of 1993 is nothing compared to Savage Dragon of the last 15 years, and you should warn people not to go any further unless they're adults who can handle some pretty bizarre and graphic depictions of the above. Oh, and Larsen's incessant narrative bitching and moaning about anyone remotely not fascistly left-wing can get tiring.
I didn't make it that far. I got to around issue 100, but then couldn't find the trades to keep going. That's why I didn't and during this time, this book was just stupid fun. As far as people's personal political stances, I never let that stop me from their reading books. Whether right or left wing. I really don't care about their personal political takes.
fascistly left wing lmao
