DUDE! Thank you!! This is exactly what I needed. I've not only been wanting to get into Spawn, I was a little disappointed with the compendiums. You hit the nail on the head when you talked about how the story may not be for you and that many get into the books based on the artwork. I'm so torn over this as I too love having everything but haven't been blown away with the story in the earlier books. Didn't know if I was going to shell out more money for these....maybe. But your review really helped - I LOVE the oversized books but they might have to wait until another time cuz it is a big cash outlay. Thanks again and keep up the great work!!
I love Spawn dude. It’s pretty much popcorn reading, fun stories, and great art. I’m also very nostalgic for this stuff. Definitely picking these up, missed out the first run and kicked myself. I have all the compendium’s too. These stories came for me when my heavy metal loving self was looking for something gritty. I’ll always have a soft spot. I remember constantly renting the film from the local video store when that came out too. I ended buying the VHS. 😂Anyway, I get why people can’t get into it, I just try to enjoy it for what it is. Also bought Iced Earth’s first album because it had Spawn on the cover. Turned out they were great, and the album was about Spawn! 🤘love the vids man.
I was 100% on board with Spawn when they came out. I have like the first 80 floppies or something. At some point well before that I started to feel like the stories never really went anywhere, like the main problems Spawn had to deal with just never getting resolved and it was kind of the same non-progress in every issue. Maybe this isn’t entirely fair, it’s just my memory and it was a long time ago. The thing is, for all the nostalgia books I’ve picked up after leaving comics for 20 years and only coming back like 3 years ago, the vast majority of stuff I remember loving did not hit me the same way (there are some exceptions). The stuff I didn’t love felt like a waste of time to read. Sadly, I am pretty sure Spawn falls into this category for me.
If the shrink wrap is in good condition I usually slit it where the hardcover comes out of the slipcase and that generally helps to preserve both and minimises marks. These Spawn editions look amazing and reasonably priced although buying all five at once would hurt! Thanks Omar!
One thing I noticed on my original volume 2 is on the front side of the book . In the middle has a increase and the I just picked up new volume 1 and on the middle of middle of book doesn’t have increase but like a smooth crease. Also volume 2 original book is missing origins 4 cover 😂.
I got a signed copy of the first one in Toronto 10 years ago, and IINM Vol.5 is on layaway at my LCS. Gotta get the other ones someday (I especially want vol. 2, with tie ins to the Violator and Angela miniseries, and vol. 3, which features a guest appearance by Savage Dragon.
I love Spawn! Some of the stories are gold!!! I do think it is worth getting and reading the whole thing! I hope they make Omnibus editions that include some of the Mini series, like: Angela, Blood Feud...

Ahh I'm waiting on mine to get here I ordered all 5 at once because I had such a huge backlog of books to order I just couldn't do it last time the other 4 were in print. I thought video games were expensive when I got into that hobby collected editions can easily make me broke if I'm not careful lol.

I finally bought all 5 and they were in perfect condition when they arrive, I am amazed by that. Love these books. These book will be 14 volume long at this point and level 15 by the time they are caught up. If they do 2 volume a year, we won’t catch up until 2028 at least, wild
I want these collections but they are hard to find in Canada right now. I can't find them at my usual places. Instocktrades doesn't have 1 - 4. Amazon and chapters are spotty.

Thanks for an overview, Omar! One question still remain tho: aren't those pages stitched to the ribbon? I see glue there but pages are very close to the ribbon. I remember seeing that combo of a bit of glue+stitching to the ribbon, in some books. Really undecided about the format tbh. 12-issue hardcovers looks so much more solid hahah
Would love to get these but CGN has dropped the ball the past year or so. They don’t ship international anymore and wouldn’t apply the minties code when I was shipping in the US because I purchased from Canada. So dumb.
So I’ve never read spawn before and want to get into it. Do these 5 books collect the full series for the most part? Would the full collection of the origins books also collect the full series (outside of any new issues obviously)
Since these are pretty pricey and I want the covers included, would you suggest going with the Spawn Origins TPB's over the Compendium and Deluxe Editions?
If you want it even in a nicer scale, go the origins HC route. When they come back to print. The cheapest route with covers are the tpbs. However they don’t have issue 9 and 10 in the previous printings of them.

It's a real shame these deluxe issues don't contain any of the cross-overs, as they are considered canon. Without them, there are continuity problems, and that's tough to accept when the price for these books is so high.
I am not happy That the covers are virgin without the title and other indicia so you have no idea what issue you’re reading. But at least the cover art is there, unlike the paperbacks.
Misprints in every book? Lazy introductions? Missing covers in the extras? I'm sorry, I'm a little OCD, I just can't buy books with misprints. I'm gonna stick to the Compendiums.
wow, that's a lot of misprints and issues on these books! The one I think is the worse was the duplicated page on volume 2 or 3, but having the same introduction word for word reprinted from volumen 3 in volume 4 is just lazy. For such pricey books one would expect the production and editorial department to be more thorough

Ultimately, I would have preferred a hardcover omnibus for the series but I’ll stick with the Compendiums. They seem to be coming out pretty quickly.

Upgraded my Origin HCs, looked for these for the longest time, only hope that they will eventually up-size the HellSpawn and Dark Ages books.

TMP have a bit of a record for copy-pasting. A few of the OHCs have the wrong issues listed on the covers.

I went with the tpb omnibus of Spawn. Kinda wish I went with these now.
Eh I only paid 35$ for each of my compendiums, so I don't feel to bad going that route over these

OPB has a picture of vol 1 HC that says it collects 1-8 and 10-13. So no issue 9 and I think the original vol 1 didn't include 13.

Yeah, the binding looks dubious to my eye.
He mentioned in the video the original binding is why he went the OHC route. These look bad. IMO I was waiting for his overview.
I wish you could have put a marvel treasury edition in front of the book for scale as well.
