I finally left the Episcopal Church (US Anglican Church) and converted to Buddhism partially in protest (like Ajahn Brahm's example). A gay bishop was ordained about 10 years ago in New Hampshire. The entire Episcopal Church was suddenly overrun with people who hated all gays. I was shocked-this was not my church. I had already been meditating with a Tibetan sangha; then I noticed the utter lack of judgment re: people of all kinds-I realized then that I needed to change my spiritual path.

This talk was given back in 2007. It's 2015 now. It's so fresh and still current with the times. The TRUTH never changes with time. Ajahn Brahm always hits my bone marrow of delusion. Thanks for uploading. Like I always do, I'll listen to this talk over and over again.

I am personally a life long atheist who has recently found the Buddhist philosophy. I've come to realize Buddhism is not at all a religion, so in no way flys in the face of my atheism or scientific materialism. But I have also found that the more understanding of Buddhism I obtain, the more inner peace and understand of the way of the universe I have as well. Science is great at describing what the physical universe DOES, Spirituality is great for understanding what reality IS.

If we were to stop and see and walk at a slower pace we will definitely get to feel the beauty of all things and things that we have missed out . Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu for this talk on the meaning of life by being real to ourselves and to people around us. Still watching your Dharma Talk even though is February 2020. Thank you.🙏 Greetings from Singapore.

One thing Buddhism does not do is to judge or criticise or ostricise another religion - That is why we need tolerance and not hubris n pointing out to others what we perceive to be an inadequacy which more often than not only serves to highlight our own inadequacies. Very easy to criticise - blame - in order to feel in control or superior - happiness starts with the self - forgiveness - letting go - non attachment to our prejudices - remember anger comes from fear - unecessarily stifles belief

Imagine a cup that has a crack in it. If you drop the cup the crack will become bigger and the cup will beak. That is why we must care for the cup so that it doesn't break. Now imagine a cup that is made of an unbreakable material. You wouldn't care for it because it isn't breakable. The cup with a crack in it is a person. The crack is mortality. Because we are certain to die, we can care about others. If we were imortal, we wouldn't need to care about others. Death helps us to care for others.

I'd love to see a discussion between Ajahn Brahm and Richard Dawkins. I was watching a video last night with Dawkins interviewing Daniel Dennett and every moral conclusion they came to agreed with Buddhist teachings. Perhaps a lot of theists might see that a belief in a god is not necessary in order to live a moral life. It'd also be very interesting to watch for atheists who have found Buddhism.

You would need to look up buddhist monasteries in your locality and ask them. Then, it would also depend on whether you would like to join the Tibetan, Japanese, or the Theravada sect. Each are quite different, so you might want to explore each one before you decide (Ajahn Brahm is from Theravada). Usually, their monasteries organize retreats, where you can get an idea about their monastacizing process . An orientation and subsequent training could take anywhere between 7-9 years. Good luck!

@Containforum The buddha was not a God, but an enlightened human being. Theres a buddhist teaching which explains this well: A disciple asked the buddha what he was, he asked
are you a Mosiah? the buddha answered no
are you a healer? again no
    are you a teacher? no
so the disciple asked: what are you? the buddha replied : I am awake.
the essential thing the buddha awoke to was the truth of suffering, and how to remove it by eradicating its cause, which is taught in buddhism to be ignorance,

  • @johnnyphisit
    @johnnyphisit 13 лет назад

@tomwash1 How do you feel dude ? Do you feel angry? Unhappy? What is your feeling telling you?
How do you deal with it? Now i know how good your budist is . There are many ways to find some answers with a little push. Have a good night my friend :) I'm going to meditate now.

  • @XzmazX

... aswell as the chain of things which are caused to arise due to that ignorance. So according to the teachings of buddhism, the buddha wasnt a God but just a normal human being, who found out how to remove suffering, and then taught other people how to do the same by following the path that he did. this path is called the Noble Eightfold path, and is made up of three groups: Morality, Concentration, Wisdom. These are the only three things the buddha ever taught. Hope this helps its only

That's your evidence then is it? A quote from a review on his book, I notice you didn't give the name of the critic. "Scientists...... want to root out every vestige of mystery and religious awe from society," what's wrong with that then? I am not a zealous fan of Richard Dawkins, I just happen to agree with what he says, why not watch some of his videos here on RUclips and you will see for yourself that he is not an arrogant person?

If you're into butting heads, you might come up with quirky ideas like this. For all the things that I like about Dawkins, he is very much caught up in ego, as many intellectuals are, and I see zero benefit from cantankerous big-noting that Dawkins would find hard to resist, despite his bent towards Buddhist ideas ...
Or do you find it appealing to "win over" Dawkins? Who is desiring such measures?

Your speaking my language lol The entire idea that you can't be moral without religion or god is SOOOO stupid. I can't even deal with talking about it with religious folks because as soon as I hear the usual crud about how without "divine authority" there is no right and wrong, then I just have to laugh. I can't even relate to it at all. If I was doing what I think is right because I'm afraid of hell or bad karma or because some ancient book says to, I would feel like a wimp and lightweight

I understand and appreciate the message. Relaxing is helpful. But sometimes things are stressful and tiring. If nobody was ever stressed or tired he wouldn't have that microphone, or that bottle of water, or youtube for people to receive the message, or food, or cleaning products and a shower. I may be a little unfair in my assumptions about what this guy thinks. I've just come across too many who subscribe to this idea, and don't realise the logical conclusion would be a primitive, unpleasant existence. It's easy to say relax when others are providing for you. And there is great satisfaction to be found in doing the grind. Not everything is pleasant and full of meaning. Sometimes it's unpleasant, but necessary.
