I can't walk into a store without fully draining my social battery so I can't imagine how a full-blown convention would go down. I still look forward to when I can go to my local con
Sitting here watching this on Saturday of Denfur 2021 in my room trying to calm down after panicking in the convention space because I kinda forgot how to exist around people
This video helps alot , I've been friendless for a long time and haven't known how to start making furry friends , life without others just feels empty and pointless , I hope to be able to attend local meets and sometime in the future maybe some cons , keep up the great videos , love your content !
Yeah, I know what you're saying too, I mean, I have friends back then but I'm not very social active which my friends are nothing more than strangers for company 😑,it's a bit different than you're situation but it's kinda relatable right? 🤔
Really solid advice here! I wish I'd had this advice for my first con. A lot of the points made here had to be learned the hard way for me. Go into a con with a plan, but one that's more loose than a strict schedule. I've missed out on panels I wanted to go to, because I was hanging out with a new group of friends, or another event caught my interest. It's more about exploring new interests and meeting new people in the end! Introversion and extroversion exists on a spectrum for most people. (There's no such thing as a 100% introvert, or 100% extrovert.) Some lean more towards introversion and become socially drained more easily than most, and others are social butterflies who thrive in large social gatherings. Most exist in the middle. I definitely lean more towards introversion, but become super outgoing when in the company of people who appreciate the real me. I've had really bad social anxiety for the longest time, but I started to become more accustomed to being in large crowds after attending a few cons with people who I trust. (It's nerve-wracking going to a huge con by yourself, as I've done before. Like anything, con-going is another skill that's built up with practice! For those who lean towards introversion, and have a small social battery capacity, I'd recommend going at your own pace. Go with what's comfortable for you, and retreat away to your hotel room when you're feeling drained and tired. After all, it's supposed to be a fun experience, and I know what typically happens when you push yourself when socially drained.
The best advise you gave was to just go with the flow. Especially at large cons. Making a list of things you want to do, and people you want to meet, at the larger cons will set you up for failure. When the con is over, that list might have one or two check marks on it. That'll make you think that the con was a bust, as you didn't get the things you wanted to do, done. I totally agree with you on the issue of going to a small con if one has issues with being social. I know how it felt like to attend a major con as my first con experience, it was kinda overwhelming to say the least. But I managed to make it out okay, and loved it. That con was Anthrocon 2007. Just as a kicker, I had only just got my fursuit two days before I left for the con. So I had him for my first con. I think that played a big roll in how positive I felt about that weekend. It left me wanting to attend so many more cons.
Thanks for your suggestion Beta. I am a Hong Kong Furry. And I am going to have my first local furry party tmr. This vedio really helps a lot how to deal with it. I am going to have my best experience and enjoy it tmr!
Honestly , for someone that is very socially awkward and wants to stay inside for most of the time im offered to go anywhere with people . This video gave a little more spirit to actually want to go somewhere . Sure if i went to somewhere with a HUGE crowd like the ones you mentioned , i would most likely hide for most of the con . But starting small , i feel like I can do it :]
all good points. my experience is that i dont have anyone to hang with.. so when i go to my meets, i generally sit alone ith my sis cause id ont know anyone.. and the times i do try interact people, everyone else is already talking to their friends about things or are to busy with other social things so yeah..
I wish I had this for my first Con x3 Luckily I was smart with my first Con and went to a smaller one first and that helped, but my First MFF experience I was so lost and got pretty disappointed I was unable to find or meet folks I wanted to that I knew was there.
my first convention was this megaplex that past and i went solo. at first my introvert self was screaming just to go back to my circle but i pushed through and eventually i manage to feel fine as i walked all over finding wonderful loot at the dealer den and playing irl Pokesnaps with fursuits i saw lol. i even met some nice people so i enjoyed my time. but after that day my social battery was completely drained and i was fine not going the rest of the days. even though i didnt make friends i was happy that i atleast was social and did something new
Here going to Colorado springs comic con, as much as it's not a furry convention I expect to see yall there anyway and it's my first time at a convention, so thanks for the info man
I find myself pretty overwhelmed by places with a bunch of diff little things going on so close together. It's why I'm too timid for comic con. Might freeze up and be dazed by it all. I feel like I would have to pre-filter out the many things I would prefer to not devote attention to and try to direct all my energies toward the main reasons I'd ever journey to a con. 16:28 maybe you're trying to figure out the wrong thing. The con is dependent on the people that are there. So the spontaneous is just going to happen. Not worth figuring out. It's all dependent on the people.
Great overview. The off the cuff worked fine, if you do something similar in future, I would say pre-con, @con, and post-con things to take in account for. Pre: Plan (or volunteer) to do something - Bring a friend At: Set reasonable expectations based on con size and what you planned Post: Get caught up with sleep, eating, work schedules, follow-up with others you met I think you did a fine job!
The first important step to any con prep is budgeting how much money you will need for the entirety of the con, not only hotel expenses but also food & drink expenses, but also if you want to be able to buy merch at the con or commission someone for art and whatnot. Decide if you will be travelling far enough from your residence that you may require a hotel room, plan out how many nights you will be spending in the hotel and how much that would cost. Another important thing to consider is travel, are you driving to the con or flying, how are you getting to the city that the con is being held in. If it's nearby then either driving, having someone drive you, taxi, train, or bus maybe your method of transport. If it's far from home then either consider driving, being driven, or plane as your methods. You either need to have a license and/or car or know someone who does and is willing to transport you and your bags to your hotel/hotel rooms if it'll be you and a group of friends. If not then plan out how much money you will need for either two plane tickets or a round trip ticket for economy class since that will be the cheapest option. If flying make sure to research all of that flight's rules and guidelines and how much it will cost to transport both yourself and your baggage. If you have a fursuit make sure to pack accordingly and try to keep the number of bags to two decently large wheeled trunks that offer enough protection for your fursuit head in particular. If you are planning on staying in a hotel for the durration of the con choose not only a hotel nearby to the con space but one that is affordable for your price range, also you may need to pay with either debit card or credit card for certain charges so keep that in mind. This means that if you are under the age of 18 make sure you are going to this con and hotel with someone above the age of 21 like your parents, a cousin, aunt, or someone else who will be able to pay for the hotel and any damages that might occur during your stay since you are too young to legally be liable for payment of damages to the hotel room. Also most if not every hotel that exists will not allow anyone under the age of 18 to book a room for even just one night so you will need an adult with you when you are booking that room. Or have the adult book the room online and go with you once arriving at the hotel to check yourself in. For conventions it is much quicker and easier to have prepaid for con passes online at least a week before the first day of the con otherwise you will have to wait in line to purchase a badge on the first day which can mean, if it's a well-known large con, waiting upwards of 2+ hours in whatever weather is occuring. Usually the first day of a con will have 3 different lines for passes, the first line is for those who have already ordered and paid for their passes online or known as the quick regestration line, next is the one day pass line where you buy a con pass for just one day of the event, and finally the last line is for people to buy passes for the entire duration of the con. If you are only going for one day travelling by car maybe the best method since spending money on a plane ticket for just one day is usually outside of most peoples budgets, also you would most likely have to spend one night at a hotel since most flights do not offer same day tickets, bascially you will not be able to return via plane the night of the day you attend the con, most likely your flight will be early next morning. If you are attending the entire con then a flight is probably the best option alongside a hotel room unless you know someone who lives in the city that the con is being held in, it will help you save money in the end if you can stay at a friend's house for the duration of the con and have them drive you everyday the con is occuring. Packing for the con is also important. If you choose to stay for the entire duration of the con make sure to pack enough clothing for not only the con itself but for any wardrobe changes that may happen in case of spills of drink or food, extra sweat, or even unexpected weather like snowstorms or thunderstorms. Nothing is more disappointing then not having enough clothing and having to use either the friend's washer and dryer or the hotel's washer and dryer just so you have something to wear the next day or that same day. Planning out what you want to get done at the con is also key. If you know that you get burned out when around lots of people easily make sure to plan for this by giving yourself some alone time in your hotel room or at that friend's house if possible, if not maybe find a less occupied part of the con to cool down and take some space. Figure out what events/panels are happening during the con, find out about when the dealer's den/artist's alley opens and if you wish to buy merch or art and if you have the extra funds for that. Most cons take place in heavily populated cities usually in the city center where there is a lot of resturants and stores to purchase food, hell the hotel you pick might offer room service or free breakfast alongside your stay, so plan for how much money you will need for meals and when you can partake in these meals. Do not only bring funds for merch, you will want to priortize meals and drinks first after hotel and travel expenses. Once you've come up with a budget, travel plans, and rooming plans, and your at the con always make sure to hydrate yourself since you will be doing a lot of walking and to pace yourself for what you are comfortable doing each day of the con that you plan on attending and also make sure to have fun. Taking pictures, meeting new people(if you are comfortable with that), dancing during raves, going to panels, and just experiencing the con's atmosphere should bring you happiness if you have less to stress and worry about if you've taken the right steps to plan ahead.
Great video Beta! I have been on a break after my girlfriend thought I spent too much money on furry things. We broke up and now I'm going full furry again. But so much has changed. In many cases for the better but my social battery really got drained during that time away. So nice to be back though. It's like I found my way home
Five months from now I'm going to my first con all the way over in Hamburg (I live in Australia). I don't know anyone else who's going, online or in person, and to make matters worse I've never even traveled alone before. I've vulanteered to help set up some equipment and possibly do some backstage work for a musical theatre performance, which is how I was planning to meet people. To tell you the truth, after watching your video I'm worried I've bitten off more than I can chew
Yep, that's pretty much me, low social battery, introverted and social anxiety. I only been to 2 conventions but neither of them were furry conventions. In both cases I went with a group. Both were small conventions
Sympathies with the story about Pineapple. Passed you in the dealer's den yesterday and went along to tell my husband... who proceeded to go say hi to you himself. We're very much on opposite ends of the social energy gradient.
At first I was worried when you said that starting with a big con might not be a good thing since I'm going to one of the main furry conventions in my country. But then I checked and MFF whick you mentioned had an attendance of over 13 thousand ppl last time while the one I'm going to had only 250. I think I'll be fine with the starting small thing. Might still try and stretch my social battery in various ways until the con just to be safe tho
I've wanted to attend a furcon for a really long time! I've been a furry for maybe 10 years, but I haven't gotten to go yet. I've gone to a local comic con and some events in suit and that's it. I hope to attend anthrocon this year! Don't have any furry friends yet but I'm trying to convince my sister to go with me. 😅
All really solid advice, and a solid video. I just desperately hope that the pandemic properly starts to wane so people can actually put said advice to use. Man I miss conventions. Nice to see some opening up but hopefully that progress isn’t lost.
The M60 is a belt-fed machine gun that fires the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge (similar to.308 Winchester), which is commonly used in larger rifles, such as the M14. It is generally used as a crew-served weapon and operated by a team of two or three individuals. The team consists of the gunner, the assistant gunner (AG), and the ammunition bearer.
I'm not new to the fandom (been around in some shape or form for 15 years), but I've NEVER been to a FurCon yet. All the Cons here in the UK are down south, or in hard to get to/expensive locations >.> And I'm a cheap-arse northerner ^.^;
I am very socially awkward but i want my first con to be big because while i might be nervous, i dont usually get overwhelmed by mass of people, just will be nervous if a conversation is initiated, but even though im not very social, i feel not a massive but a not small con seems right
Slightly upset that I live in Pittsburgh, and didn't realize Anthrocon was the biggest in the country.... I went in 2016, and had a great time!! best con I ever went to.... but it must have grown alot since then.. I went back this year 2024, and had a horrible time... very overwhelming,... felt isolating.. because there we so many people there that people kept to themselfs or their group and didn't have that intamate feeling where people would want to reach out and talk... more like (the overall vibe of the con from someone who felt like an outsider.) if I did go talk to someone, felt like they were "huh??... who's trying to talk to me now???" especally as a non fursuiter... i was very bummed cus I took the whole week off of work for the con, (unable to go on thurday) but only went to the con on friday... and didn't go back..... i let AC staff know through the email surveys, that having some games in some of the seating areas like board games, or those big connect 4 games you see in bars, to have more of an opertunity to connect with people and make you want to stay.. or just having more decorations, and make it feel more welcoming.. (because seeing most of the con floor empty, it felt more like a business convention rather than a fun and magical place..) even just having loose ballons on the con floor would have been so fun, to keep me and others with bad and overwhelming social anxiety entertainted tossing them around. or having entertainment like a balloon artist!!! (they have enough money to do so for 80 for admission + the 400+ dealers room table fees... ) small things like that would have helped alot.. but im going to try to go to local fur meets, so that next time i'd just be better. 💖
Im rn at furcan 2022, just standing in a corner, i still didn't make any friends or at least talk with someone lol, so yeah im just watching videos of how to socialize in a furry con lol
I am actually going to TTFC which is in Tulsa and I’ll be going there next weekend. Oklahoma City has one in January too so I’ll be going the if it’s still going on
I'm going to FWA. I'm so nervous. It's my first con and I'll be 3/4 partialing. I'm bringing an entire water bladder and a day bag. I feel prepared but I have absolutely no clue what I'm going to do. 😅
I’ll be attending my first when I go to AC in 2022. Should be a wild experience but at least I’ll have a friend to meet up with and I have a good ability to mingle
That was a great video Beta! Thanks for sharing the tips and everything. I have only been to 3 cons and I still feel like this helped! Gonna try to plan out what to do at Blfc and but also just go with the flow in case plans change. ^.^
Had to tell my friend that if I ever did go to one of them some day I am forcing her to come with me and she just said 'YEEESSS, but can we take (her crush) as well?' Literally the two just need to go out cause its so obvious its mutual and if they don't get together by the time I drag them with me to one I will cry.
You forgot to mention you should be ready to plan ahead financially and be willing to spend around $500-$1000 for a hotel. Plan on saving money for food too, cause some cons don't sell food there.
I've been going to cons since the first one, Confurence Zero. I learned to stay offsite. I haven't stayed at the con hotel in some time. If you need to control your interactions, stay offsite. Learn to De-geek. Remove all of your con gear when you are off looking at local non-con places. Avoid unwanted attention by not looking like you dressed from purchases in the dealers den and artist alley. Also, shower daily. The "pungent fan" routine is nasty.
i like in a remote town in canada bc and there is littrelly no furries anywhere to be found. so im kinda one of a very small group out here. i dont even know if theres any in vancouver cuz ive looked and didnt find much. i REALLY dont wanna have to go down to the states to meet other furries but at this point there isint any options.
I feel like furry conventions are so expensive. I really wanna go to Eurofurence 27 but it’s 120€ to access to the whole convention. + I need to pay for a hostel which is also 200€ again. :(
I can't walk into a store without fully draining my social battery so I can't imagine how a full-blown convention would go down.
I still look forward to when I can go to my local con

i’ll keep this video bookmarked until my parents aren’t keeping me from going to a con
How do I learn the power of being able to tell parents I want to go to a con
im 18 but i wouldn’t be able to explain where im going and why 😭 and also i don’t live near any big cities so they are all miles away 😍
@Orange Protogen telling them its a normal party won't work if it's at a big building, you should tell them its a big costume party
I love how everyone here in the comments is like 15

Im goin to save this for wen someday i go to my first con
Five months from now I'm going to my first con all the way over in Hamburg (I live in Australia). I don't know anyone else who's going, online or in person, and to make matters worse I've never even traveled alone before.
I've vulanteered to help set up some equipment and possibly do some backstage work for a musical theatre performance, which is how I was planning to meet people. To tell you the truth, after watching your video I'm worried I've bitten off more than I can chew
I still remember the video about the pineapple plushie.
He looked so happy with his plushie, it was beyond adorable
Me going to my first con in 2 days not knowing a single person including my room share partner:
Oh no
Oh, which one did ya go to?
Yep, that's pretty much me, low social battery, introverted and social anxiety. I only been to 2 conventions but neither of them were furry conventions. In both cases I went with a group. Both were small conventions
This is like asking how to breathe JUST HAVE COMMON SENSE
even with you saying you didn't know how to say things, you did a great job. it helped me a lot. now i have more clear plans
if i went to a con i would probably die after realizing i dont know what to do.
same lol
My first was indyfurcon 2021 and I enjoyed it along with the panels. I didn't spend much time or energy hanging out with people though
whenever i see that little beta in the corner always makes me laugh. i get so distracted looking at it LMAO
I know you are not gonna read this still I want to thank you for being the best youtube I know and hope you are doing well.
Sympathies with the story about Pineapple. Passed you in the dealer's den yesterday and went along to tell my husband... who proceeded to go say hi to you himself. We're very much on opposite ends of the social energy gradient.
Wow! Such a good fight scene!
You forgot about the room parties fun ;)
The M60 is a belt-fed machine gun that fires the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge (similar to.308 Winchester), which is commonly used in larger rifles, such as the M14. It is generally used as a crew-served weapon and operated by a team of two or three individuals. The team consists of the gunner, the assistant gunner (AG), and the ammunition bearer.
bro shut up
Bro I kinda want one now. Sounds like a cool gun.
I'm not new to the fandom (been around in some shape or form for 15 years), but I've NEVER been to a FurCon yet. All the Cons here in the UK are down south, or in hard to get to/expensive locations >.> And I'm a cheap-arse northerner ^.^;
I am very socially awkward but i want my first con to be big because while i might be nervous, i dont usually get overwhelmed by mass of people, just will be nervous if a conversation is initiated, but even though im not very social, i feel not a massive but a not small con seems right
Me just not knowing what the heck you do at furry conventions or how to properly navigate FWA...
Now i just gotta find a way to get a ride to my first convention... or a convention even close to me... darn Canada...
POV: you aren't financially able to go to any conventions that aren't Vancoufur, but it's your first con ever and have extreme social anxiety
These are real good tips I will apply to cosplay conventions as well!
I spat, for the devil to pass
wanting death and sleep
then the boy died, somewhere in me
that he called his mother weeping
I am actually going to TTFC which is in Tulsa and I’ll be going there next weekend. Oklahoma City has one in January too so I’ll be going the if it’s still going on
I'm going to FWA. I'm so nervous. It's my first con and I'll be 3/4 partialing. I'm bringing an entire water bladder and a day bag. I feel prepared but I have absolutely no clue what I'm going to do. 😅
Woulda gone to one this weekend if I knew about it sooner than I did. F
I’ll be attending my first when I go to AC in 2022. Should be a wild experience but at least I’ll have a friend to meet up with and I have a good ability to mingle
Beta: "start small"
Me: *Goes to tff as my first con*
ACFI will be my first furry con.
That pillow on the left looks familiar… 🤔
Can’t remember who it is, probably a hyena.
You are so smart thanks for the info
I’m at denfur currently 😊
Nice :D
Very nice, I live just south of Denver and need to go sometime
@@someguy166 yes you do it’s so fun but nerve racking at the same time
A....FOX MADE FROM PINEAPPLE
*french gasp*
_Vore_
That was a great video Beta! Thanks for sharing the tips and everything. I have only been to 3 cons and I still feel like this helped! Gonna try to plan out what to do at Blfc and but also just go with the flow in case plans change. ^.^
Im gonna save this video just in case
I might hate furrys but i still will respect them and idk like them.
What if I wasn’t a furry? Could I use this guide too?
Yes
Im so happy to see you making these vids again (Its Ammy)
F u r c o n s
Man I wish I could go to one
Wait till you can go to one
What of you have no friends online or in person.
Does FWA count as an ok beginner? It's the closest convention to me personally..
I have a question for you. Who made your fursuit?
hey i really liked this video. is there any advice on making friends in the fandom?
Day 57 of telling Beta to look up Lackadaisy
Cool
one thing when you put the Head on that not talking to want not one talking to people goes away like 90 percent of the time
how to find furry convention ?
ps : i'm french and live in Rhône-Alpes so fi you know some sai it
search up on google/whatever you use, "Furry conventions in ________ coming up" then you MIGHT find one, if not you might go somewhere else
Beta: don't wait for people to come to you
Me: no, i think i will
Had to tell my friend that if I ever did go to one of them some day I am forcing her to come with me and she just said 'YEEESSS, but can we take (her crush) as well?' Literally the two just need to go out cause its so obvious its mutual and if they don't get together by the time I drag them with me to one I will cry.
When I go maybe I will give it a few years I will just say I’m on vacation with my friends or something and try to survive social anxiety
i needed this video, but im still not going to a con until im older than 18
I see a convention as a Walmart full of endless possibilities from basically endless people.
There's a Con in New England? Where? When?
Was this helpful?
Yes No
^
Im excited to be near one finally
5:00 start small
my nearest furcon is Eurofurence :'D
Will you be at Midwest furfest this year?
You forgot to mention you should be ready to plan ahead financially and be willing to spend around $500-$1000 for a hotel.
Plan on saving money for food too, cause some cons don't sell food there.
Thanks for mentioning something my parents will likely never say yes to.
*_HELP PLEASE._*
I’ve been to a convention just not too furry con
Me during the entire video: *distracted by the chibi fursona in a hot tub*
I don't know what to comment but here's a like Betaeta (I'm gonna call u like this for now until I find a better way to call you)
Hi beta
I've been going to cons since the first one, Confurence Zero. I learned to stay offsite. I haven't stayed at the con hotel in some time. If you need to control your interactions, stay offsite.
Learn to De-geek. Remove all of your con gear when you are off looking at local non-con places. Avoid unwanted attention by not looking like you dressed from purchases in the dealers den and artist alley. Also, shower daily. The "pungent fan" routine is nasty.
Thank you Beta
i like in a remote town in canada bc and there is littrelly no furries anywhere to be found. so im kinda one of a very small group out here. i dont even know if theres any in vancouver cuz ive looked and didnt find much. i REALLY dont wanna have to go down to the states to meet other furries but at this point there isint any options.
One of the larger furry conventions is in Vancouver, it’s called VancouFur and it happens annually
@@copperlaktronics6705 yeah i laerned abot that recentrly
Personally I'd love to try a fur meet, but there's literally no fur meets in my state
It doesnt matter which place it is for a furmeet
@@RBToys_yt what do you mean?
We need a mail video.
I feel like furry conventions are so expensive. I really wanna go to Eurofurence 27 but it’s 120€ to access to the whole convention. + I need to pay for a hostel which is also 200€ again. :(
