To carry on your main point, the whole purpose of communication in this scenario is to establish CONSENT. That's THE big thing we really need to hammer home in our fandom, because receiving consent for an interaction matters more than coming off as awkward or annoying. Otherwise you end up getting situations like someone following you into the headless lounge, since they weren't willing to communicate with you at all. My relationship with you is different than most since we at least know each other, but that core concept of consent remains true regardless of who's involved and how. We should always treat people as human beings, regardless of their status or popularity, and respect their boundaries relative to how well we know them. I know most of us are pretty awkward when it comes to social interaction, but if we want to ensure that our con experiences are mutually fun and enjoyable, we owe each other that bare minimum of basic communication. -Vela
what gets me confused is when people call you a creep when you were given permission to tag along... at furrydelphia i followed a goat around that i was talking to in telegram and i had the goats permission... as soon as she got with her friends they got agressive calling me a creep and then tried to publicly shame me in group chats and i had no idea what happened either because there was no reason or autistic issues made it impossible for me to understand there was a change from when she said it was okay for me to hang out with her
She wanted your attention until she got with her friends. Which is mean. That’s why when conversations end with me, I wait for the person to ask me to join. If I have to ask, it makes me look desperate especially if the person IS “popular” or “known”. That power dynamic leads to you become an accessory and not a friend.
To be fair, this actually goes for any convention. You don't just stalk someone. I don't go to furrycon, but I do know when people stalk you, anything could happen, even you getting hurt or kidnapped. This is why people don't like it.
I've had what I refer to as a "table stalker" several years ago at Morphicon. This guy started out talking about commissions then after deciding he didn't have the money to get one stayed and just kind of poked around at the items on my table. When other people stopped to look he'd interrupt them when they tried to buy from me or would stand in front of my table and not move to let them look. I asked him to please let people through several times then eventually had to tell him to leave. At the end of the day while closing up he showed up again saying he was there to help me tear down. I told him no but he wouldn't leave until a staff member ushered him out, then he stood in the hallway waiting. The staff hung around with me until he left. The next morning he showed up again, this time the staff members called security on him. Turns out he didn't even have a badge to be in the con space ( he was covered in hand drawn character badges so it was hard to tell) and had been caught doing some other seedy stuff so he was escorted off the property.

I had a well-intentioned "stalker" for an afternoon at a furcon because I'd chatted with them briefly because they looked anxious and I wanted to put them at ease, and I guess they took that as an invitation to follow me *everywhere.* I don't bear that person any ill will, because it was clear that they clearly struggled with socializing and just didn't know the right way to proceed. It's a bummer when someone isn't malicious or bad-intentioned, but annoys, offends, bothers, or hurts others with their social faux pas even so. Ignorance or "good intentions" don't excuse bad behavior, mind you, but it does make me wish that those people had better outlets for learning and practicing social skills.

Every time i wanted to tag along with furries or fursuiters, especially in the evening when it was quiet and i had nothing better to do, I asked and made sure that i am allowed to walk along with them. Following along without them having your permission and no specific reason (like asking for a photo, or anything ) is just playing weird. There where times when i was out at the lobby, wondering what to do and there was a time when i asked for a picture and asked, if i can tag along and look around.
I had one of these experiences at my first ever convention and I’m no where near being a recognizable person within this community/fandom 👀 I don’t even post entertainment stuff anywhere 😅
There is a level of communication below talking which is bodylanguage purrfectly suitable to establish consent. In a mere second coming closer an inviting gesture, a shy hug and friendly pressure built up. I'm happy to have to resort to talking in fursuit only to those who are blind to it (which i dont blame them for). Of course it is deniable consent and in rare cases will be missunderstood and need verbal clarification. Talking in fursuit ruins my headspace for acting as my fursona. Of course building up a 100.000 subscriber channel triggers problems and a reality other people would never experience or have to worry about.
