One of my favorite movies of all time, with so many great and memorable charakters like the landlord, the gay tailor (who has the most "masculine" fighting style), the leader of the Axe Gang, etc. And besides of all the absurd action and funny scenes there is still the really nice lovestory with the mute girl.
Bill Murray called Kung Fu Hustle "the supreme achievement of the modern age in terms of comedy." The actress who played landlady didn't originally intend to be in this film. She had been in some movies, including the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. But she had retired from acting in the eighties. She accompanied a friend to an audition for Kung Fu Hustle, where Stephen Chow noticed her smoking a cigarette with a sarcastic look on her face. He offered her the role without an audition. This movie is brutal, but the action is so ridiculous and over-the-top that it doesn't bother me. It's like watching Elmer Fudd shoot Daffy Duck. In the scene where Landlady is in the car with the Axe Gang boss, the threatening gestures she makes are taken from the movie The Way of the Dragon, in which Bruce Lee made the same set of gestures. Other movie references include Landlady saying "Tomorrow is another day" (a line from Gone with the Wind), Donut saying "This could be the end of a beautiful friendship" (from the last line of Casablanca, "This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship"), the blood coming from behind the doors in the insane asylum (from the blood coming out of the elevators in The Shining), Donut saying "What are you preparing to do? in his death scene (from Sean Connery saying "What are you prepared to do?" just before he dies in The Untouchables).
Shaolin Soccer is also a lot of fun, and you will see a lot of the same people in it. Stephen Chow had a string of hit movies that he wrote, directed, and starred in, each getting more worldwide recognition. He was great at getting a bunch of fantastic martial artists who may not have the appearances for leading roles, and mixing action with humour. Shaolin Soccer really broke through, with Kung Fu Hustle being even bigger a couple of years later. Unfortunately, his next film (CJ-7) didn't do nearly as well, and he stopped doing all 3 in the same movie. His earlier stuff is also fun, but with lower budgets.
"Who are you? No wonder he can take his wife's beatings..." The rascal landlord, played by Yuen Wah, is one of my favorite characters in Kung Fu Hustle (along with his abusive wife 😅). Yuen Wah traditionally plays villains (check him out in Eastern Condors, a Hong Kong remake of Rambo 3), so it is nice to see him play a hero here.
@@NiaMakiReacts and also, since you already watched Shang Chi: he plays the elder from the dragon village (i've forgotten the actual name of the place)
😁I had the opportunity to meet master Chiu Chi Ling (the actor who plays the gay tailor) some time back. He is every bit as delightfully insane in real life as he is in his roles!
One of the two men who was cast as a man using that instrument as a weapon was the late, great Fung Hak-On. He played a lot of villainous roles during his career and was a great martial artist as well. He is probably best known to a lot of people for being in a prominent role in Jackie Chan's first _Police Story_ (1985) but also appeared in Jackie's first major hit _Snake in the Eagle's Shadow_ (1978) when you briefly see him at the beginning in one of his rare good-guy roles, as well as a grandmaster in one particular scene in the Donnie Yen-starring film _Ip Man 2_ (2010). Sadly oesophageal cancer took him away from us in 2016 at just 67 years old, but what an impact he made as some of the most memorable villains in classic Hong Kong action cinema history.
The best description I tell my friends when talking about this movie is it's like a live action anime. The humor, the martial arts themes has a similar vibe to anime.

Comedy is the genre that's most difficult to make. It's easy to make people cry. It's difficult to make people laugh again and again even when you watch repeatedly. In this sense, this movie is a piece of master work. Stephen Chow could not surpass himself after this movie. Your reaction is good because you accept the setup without trying to be "smart". Some people's reaction was like "This is ridiculous. People are flying." "People don't run like Road Runner." Yet people accept Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider man. We are accepting fake "sciences" and question imagination like one is better than the other. You also added your own humor to the reaction. Well done.
"What are we witnessing?!" The Beast's toad-style (indeed foreshadowed by his cell being full of froggies) is a reference to kung fu masters in movies having a 'secret style'.
That unique style is Toad Kungfu or Hama Gong. The unique technique from one of "5 Great Masters" in Condor Heros series. The Western Poisonous, Ouyang Feng.
Just FYI you watched an edited version which took out some violence and blood. There's also the dude that had his but out in the panning shot and he was actually taking a dump onto a piece of paper. This movie is so great and fits the mold of the more classic kung fu movies. Villages, gangsters and kung fu. This movie subverted my expectations when they killed off the three masters and then revealed the two other ones. The pantomime that the landlady did in the car was one that Bruce Lee did in one of his films. Donut speaking English and reciting a line from The Untouchables was great as well. This is my favorite Stephen Chow film. People like Shaolin Soccer but I like the more traditional storyline for this. Great reaction! Oh and the dude that played Paris was in Shang-Chi as the old man with the bow that was training Katy.
Oh wow!!! The Shang Chi cameo!!!! I would not have been able to remember that. I can’t believe this was the edited version 😂 go figure it was on RUclips to watch haha
Toads are one of the Five Vermin/Poisons in ancient (about 7th Century BC) Chinese philosophy known as Legalism, as especially espoused in an essay by Han Fei (in the 2nd Century BC). The others are Scorpion, Spider, Centipede, and Viper (all venomous creatures). [Interestingly tigers may be considered one of these poisonous creatures, but this is mainly because it is the result of a pun in Chinese.] Each theoretically represents a portion of the population that can pose a particular threat to the State. So their presence is a sure sign of the disruption of harmony and the natural order in the Wushu world (and anyone using their martial forms is essentially someone dealing with the dark arts). Interesting enough, the modern Chinese government appears to have revitalised this ancient analogy in recent years for it's own problematic portions of the population. Although it is less easy here to see who the Toad actually is. [In Legalism they represented the wealthy merchants and artisans.]
highly recommended this "A Chinese Odyssey" there are two parts! Plz at least have a look ,even the cover or the description😂They're also HK films acted by Stephen Chow!
FYI, this movie have references to another martial arts story called “Return of the Condor Heroes”. The married couple’s names are taken from those main characters which are way better looking(the names were supposed to be a joke). The frog stance comes from an antagonist who specializes in that fighting technique. Many Stephen chow movies references parts of Hollywood films to make the story interesting if spotted.
There are many references to other movies, both eastern and western. When Donut dies, the line “What are you prepared to do?” Was from Sean Connery’s character in “The untouchables”. The river of blood is from “The Shining”.
Chi Ling Chiu, who played the tailor, was 60 when they made this. He's pushing 80 now and as of a couple of years ago was still preforming in actions movies.
Watch this movie when i was still young boy, maybe around 10-11 years old & now going to 30. so much memories & miss those days. thank you for your reaction.
"Turncoat" is an old word for "traitor"; someone who has turned his coat into another - as in, swapped his fighting uniform for the uniform of the enemy
There's just something in these film's where there really are people who can do martial arts that fight scenes are so gorgeous. Something in the movements its so natural and fluid. Beats any Marvel fight sequence post Wesley Snipses Blades.
Some kungfu's techniques taken from Jin Yong's novel. *"Guzheng" technique (sound/sonic attack) from "Xiaoao" (The Smiling, Proud Wanderer/The Swordmen) story. *"Lion's Roar" from Yitian Tulong/Heaven Sword Dragon Sabre *Toad Kungfu (Hama Gong) from Shendiao series (Condor Heros).
There's just something awesome about a gangland group of axe-wielding killers that can also perform the Latin Hustle as a group like that~ Hustle's an awesome and unusual movie, the director (and star) Stephen Chow reportedly cast the Landlady for her level of attitude on display _while attending her friends' visit to the audition, she wasn't even there to try out~_ And even with all these oddities and nods going into it, the movie's also a great standalone flick, a kind of Wuxia film (kung-fu stories of heroics, villainy, and martial arts) I hear tell Chow has expressed interest in making another one too! Crossed Fingers Technique~
I lived in Japan along time ago and never heard of "Orochimaru". However, I can really appreciate your "Spiderman" comparison after reading a few things about "Orochimaru". Even though I have that movie, I probably haven't seen it in over 15 years. Thanks for another rewatch. By the way, do you think the 2 blind guitar Kung Fu masters are blind? Anyways, Be safe out there.
The Landlady and Landlord are all martial arts grandmasters, whose mastery level are superior than Coolie, Tailor, and Donut combined. The Landlady is the master of the Lama Pai aka. The Lion's Roar and the Landlord is the master of Tai Chi.
You should watch Shaolin Soccer (2001) next. Since you enjoyed this one. Shaolin Soccer (2001) is also brilliantly Directed, Produced, Written, and Acted as main character by the legendary Stephen Chow himself. Same as Kung Fu Hustle (2004). Please get the original cantonese language version, hong kong version. That's means preferably not the Americanized version if you can find it. I think English streaming sites would all be americanized version (which is also cantonese spoken, but they edit in English text overlays and dubbed sound effects, changed some music). Stephen Chow made both films emphasizing for the international audience in mind. It is his first big break into western market. He is already very famous and well known in Hong Kong, south-east asia, Asia in general. We love his unique style and humour. By the way, just last month, Stephon Chow announced to the public that he has finished the story draft for Shaolin Women's Soccer. He is auditioning for female actresses and we are finally getting another Stephen Chow directed movie (which is very rare nowadays), which is also a sequel to Shaolin Soccer (2001), after 22 years.
i remember seeing advertisements of this before it came out, and seeing the end part where the "chosen one" sent all the gangsters flying into the air, and thinking this is a "Matrix" wannabe film, so i didn't pay any attention or watch it for years. little did i know, the same people who worked on the matrix, also worked on this film. another thing the Land Lord, and Lady were stunt performers in the 70's and 80's, the Land Lady was a Bond girl, and the Land Lord was a stand in for Bruce Lee, when there was a stunt too dangerous for Bruce, this guy took his place. great reaction! 👍
A comment! the gag about the guy with his butt hanging out (besides his butt being out) is that his character would poop wherever he stood when he felt like it. it was cut as too crude, but you can still see him squatting in the background of some scenes sans actual poo.
Great movie! A movie I would watch from time to time. I know the comment section others would suggest "Shaolin Soccer" because it's another of his film's that did well in the US. If your interested of his other films I recommend "Chinese odyssey: Pandora's box" and " Chinese odyssey: Cinderella"
This was definitely one of those movies where you walk in expecting a goofball comedy but in the end you just get a great kung fu movie. Pretty much everything up to the music twins is just silly, but once they show up the whole movie's tone shifts and it's actually serious. Not that there aren't still jokes or absurdities, but that it steers away from the jokes and tries to deal with a serious situation. Once that is handled it can go back to being silly like the booger kid at the end.
Great reaction! One film I'd recommend is a Kung Fu classic called: "The Five Deadly Venoms". It's got a great story, excellent fight chorography, costumes, characters and it's a mystery with a twist ending. Worth checking out. Have a good day!
*Nia, thank you for watching this as I was having a rough month and this was one of my favorite childhood movies! Your reaction made me smile because my Big Sister put me on to this movie as a joke. I was getting into a lot of trouble in the streets back then and she wanted me to get back in to Martial Arts (discipline). She would have been 51 in two weeks* *Also can you react to Jet Li's Fearless and Jet Li Unleashed (aka Danny the Dog)? My Senior in Martial Arts executive produced that movie*
Hey, I’m so sorry you’ve been having a rough month :( I hope things start getting better for you soon. Also that’s a lovely thing your sister did for you, to give you a different path to keep you out of trouble ❤️ For sure about the movie! Excited to check it out!

I dont think ive seen any of her films back when she was younger but i do remmeber seeing an old martial arts film with the actor who played the landlord and he looked very handsome and aged well too. I really don't think the sign language was gibberish. Just like speaking languages, there are different kinds of sign language and dialects to them. In fact, in China, there are 3 dialects of Chinese sign language -- Northern, Southern, and Hong Kong Sign Language. However, since I truly don't know what those signs are, I can't say if it's wrong, but I doubt Steven Chow would have gotten that wrong.
The edit got messed up, but it’s me I was talking about, not her. It was a trending TikTok after there was a case again in the US when someone was hired for a press conference or something but clearly didn’t know sign language
Great action film! The only thing I never liked was the scene of the young defenseless lady being shot in the back in the beginning. In Stephen Chow's other film, "Journey to the West", another innocent person is killed at the very beginning that was even far worse (Though I think it may have been done to stay accurate to the original ancient Chinese mythology story).
So the whole thing about why our goofball hero is so bad at kung-fu is because while he learned the damn pamphlet right, his chi was misaligned. After Granny and her husband fixed him up, all the blockages were gone and his abilities actually _worked._ The really hilarious thing is that I seriously doubt that old monk knew the pamphlet had actual kung fu in it.
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this. Much better than I was expecting.
This is going to be on my rewatch list for sure!
I've watched this 6 time in the past 3 days
OMG!!!! I don't believe I've ever laughed so hard as when you did the "it's happened again...sign language gibberish" bit!😂 well played.
Hahahahaha!!! I forgot about that scene and cropped it with the rest of the layers in editing though! I’ll need to re make the short

Yet people accept Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider man. We are accepting fake "sciences" and question imagination like one is better than the other. You also added your own humor to the reaction. Well done.
One of my favorite movies. Funny, awesome action, and i even cried at the end. Love it!
22:55 - Ha, that made me literally laugh out loud, well played!
Fail I accidentally cropped the footage there 🤣
Yesss!
This movie is a cultural landmark!
Damn I’ve been missing out!
"What are we witnessing?!"
The Beast's toad-style (indeed foreshadowed by his cell being full of froggies) is a reference to kung fu masters in movies having a 'secret style'.
I couldn’t figure if donut was a style or of there was another animal I just missed reading captions 😂
JinYong adopt this Toad Kungfu in his novel Condor Heroes series.
@@DyonBosch I do love Eagle Shooting Heroes.
@@reverance_pavane Condor Heroes story always 👌👍
highly recommended this "A Chinese Odyssey" there are two parts! Plz at least have a look ,even the cover or the description😂They're also HK films acted by Stephen Chow!
Great choice. I would recommend “Out of the Dark”. This one is funny too.
Your version had the best translation ever, most accurate, even though it cannot fully represent what they say but it’s close enough
How Stephen chow is not a household name everywhere is beyond me
😭 yeah I feel guilty cause I don’t know him at all
Absolutely hilarious movie
There are many references to other movies, both eastern and western. When Donut dies, the line “What are you prepared to do?” Was from Sean Connery’s character in “The untouchables”. The river of blood is from “The Shining”.
I never realized, the axe gang member's punches had the beast bleeding, but the couple who are masteres punches didn't do anything lol
everything is a reference to something in this movie, the Frog style, the jumping on an eagles back etc are all Easter eggs to kung fu history
Oh man I’m sorry I must have forgotten to add that layer in!
One of the best movies ever made...and one of the funniest. I've never laughed so hard. Great reaction, thank you
Stephen chow is a underrated actor. producer and director. This is my second favorite movies.
Suuuch an iconic movie to me. I used to watch this all the time as a kid and never found anything like it since.
"Turncoat" is an old word for "traitor"; someone who has turned his coat into another - as in, swapped his fighting uniform for the uniform of the enemy
Glad you watched it with the native voices. Though, the English dubs aren't so bad.
If you do not love this movie it will bring you 'Horrifically Bad Fate' ... just saying 🤣
This movie is one of my favs now! Absolutely hilarious!!!
The blood scene in the asylum is a parody of The shining. There's lots of different influences in this movie
I grew up on this back in the day
There's just something in these film's where there really are people who can do martial arts that fight scenes are so gorgeous. Something in the movements its so natural and fluid. Beats any Marvel fight sequence post Wesley Snipses Blades.
Kung Fu Hustle is one of the greatest martial arts films, that this 65 year young Aussie has on DVD
Great movie indeed!
Some kungfu's techniques taken from Jin Yong's novel.
*"Guzheng" technique (sound/sonic attack) from "Xiaoao" (The Smiling, Proud Wanderer/The Swordmen) story.
*"Lion's Roar" from Yitian Tulong/Heaven Sword Dragon Sabre
*Toad Kungfu (Hama Gong) from Shendiao series (Condor Heros).
There's just something awesome about a gangland group of axe-wielding killers that can also perform the Latin Hustle as a group like that~
Hustle's an awesome and unusual movie, the director (and star) Stephen Chow reportedly cast the Landlady for her level of attitude on display _while attending her friends' visit to the audition, she wasn't even there to try out~_
And even with all these oddities and nods going into it, the movie's also a great standalone flick, a kind of Wuxia film (kung-fu stories of heroics, villainy, and martial arts)
I hear tell Chow has expressed interest in making another one too! Crossed Fingers Technique~
Oh yeah this was great! So many unexpected silly moments 😂 I loved it
@@NiaMakiReacts ooh, also, if you want the music that assassin played on the guqin, its called.. well, 'Midnight Assassin' on the soundtrack
@@NiaMakiReacts ooh, also, if you want the music that assassin played on the guqin, its called.. well, 'Midnight Assassin' on the soundtrack
Shaolin Soccer needs to be on the list now. Its the same cast :o
For sure! So many comments for it, excited to watch it now
I lived in Japan along time ago and never heard of "Orochimaru".
Shaolin Soccer (2001) is also brilliantly
Directed, Produced, Written, and Acted as main character by the legendary Stephen Chow himself.
Girl - I can't handle this much comedy, action, and excitement today...
...ok well maybe I'll hang out
😂 hahaha yes yes stay for a while :)
i remember seeing advertisements of this before it came out, and seeing the end part where the "chosen one" sent all the gangsters flying into the air, and thinking this is a "Matrix" wannabe film, so i didn't pay any attention or watch it for years. little did i know, the same people who worked on the matrix, also worked on this film. another thing the Land Lord, and Lady were stunt performers in the 70's and 80's, the Land Lady was a Bond girl, and the Land Lord was a stand in for Bruce Lee, when there was a stunt too dangerous for Bruce, this guy took his place. great reaction! 👍
17:46 comment... A DVD could dub different languages including spoken English to make this understandable for your son.-Ernie Moore Jr.
A comment!
the gag about the guy with his butt hanging out (besides his butt being out) is that his character would poop wherever he stood when he felt like it. it was cut as too crude, but you can still see him squatting in the background of some scenes sans actual poo.
Lmaooo no wayyyyyyyyyyy 😂 😂
Great movie! A movie I would watch from time to time. I know the comment section others would suggest "Shaolin Soccer" because it's another of his film's that did well in the US. If your interested of his other films I recommend "Chinese odyssey: Pandora's box" and " Chinese odyssey: Cinderella"
Big brother......In Chinese, the word 'big brother' can describe a boss.
I'll take the curls however they come! This movie is premium comedy
😂 😂
Highly recommend all of these Stephen chow's film:
.Hail The Judge
.Tricky Brain
.Shaolin Soccer
.From Beijing With Love (I forgot the exact title)
Shaolin Soccer is a great follow up to this.
It’s up on Patreon but it might take a few weeks to edit down
the fists and swords are just visualizations of the qi
Can't believe I actually forgot about this channel. Naruto brought me here and I hate that I couldn't watch you finish the series
As I understand it snakes can’t really hear, just feel vibrations. They more follow the movements of snake charmers.
Technically that’s what hearing is. Our brain is simply more advanced
One of the best eastern movies out there.
Great reaction!
One film I'd recommend is a Kung Fu classic called: "The Five Deadly Venoms". It's got a great story, excellent fight chorography, costumes, characters and it's a mystery with a twist ending. Worth checking out.
Have a good day!
Thanks! I’ll check it out!
Great movie and very funny! I own this one on dvd. It never fails to make me laugh because I love obscurity 😂
I need to have a collection actually 😂 love it!
She would have been 51 in two weeks*
*Also can you react to Jet Li's Fearless and Jet Li Unleashed (aka Danny the Dog)? My Senior in Martial Arts executive produced that movie*
Hey, I’m so sorry you’ve been having a rough month :( I hope things start getting better for you soon. Also that’s a lovely thing your sister did for you, to give you a different path to keep you out of trouble ❤️
For sure about the movie! Excited to check it out!
@@NiaMakiReacts Thank you for doing what you do!
@@NiaMakiReacts Jet Li has got a bunch of great films, Fearless and Unleashed are both very much worth your time! I would also recommend Jackie Chan's film Drunken Master from 1978, absolute legendary status as a kung fu flick.....
You really should watch Shaolin Soccer. I believe it came out before this and has many of the same actors in it.
Sounds like another fun movie!
one of my favorite films. i loved the land lord and land lady and rabbit tooth jane as they called the character who ran around in her lingerie lol. I dont think ive seen any of her films back when she was younger but i do remmeber seeing an old martial arts film with the actor who played the landlord and he looked very handsome and aged well too. I wished they had made a sequel to this I would have loved to see these characters again maybe more on the land lady and land lord if they had a sitcom series of their life running pig sty alley I'd watch it
Other than IP Man this is the best
Ip man is def goated
2004 is almost 20 years ago!!!!!!!!!! 😂
Shaolin Soccer same actors.....very good
Watching it over the weekend hopefully!
I LOVE this movie.....first saw it in theaters in dub ( which I love btw) but its just such a great movie and callback to Martial arts films.
Whenever its on I will 100% watch it and the dub and sub are not that far off...fun fact lol
recognized him by the stench of the pee is nice XD even when liking this kind of movies, but, yeah, has to think about it sometime. XD thumb up
😂
Can you be the Landlady for Halloween?
Omg! That’s brilliant!!!
Find the Axe kicking edition of this movie for your kid. Its a bit longer and has English dubbing.
Thanks!!! This movie felt too short so I’m happy there’s a longer version too lol
Such a weird movie, but great. Good reaction too.
This is one of the few titles where the English dub is ok
@34:50 you've never heard of 5 Deadly Venoms? The styles in a lot of kung fu films, and toad is one of them
I haven’t :( I’m not too knowledgeable on kung fu
@@NiaMakiReacts don't be ashamed just more to enjoy

Brother means basicly like comorade(as a respect) in russia or something like that. (As far as i have understood over the time.)
Fun fact: the movie title, written in Chinese, simply says "kung fu".
🤣 10 bucks for a 2 cent pamphlet too
Aren't we all kind of disappointments to our parents ^_^
Unless by chance or by maiming our souls, our value is never in the expected places.
