I used to watch this at least three times a day during college (back in 2004-05) and I still laugh at that scene especially. The whole movie is just laugh out loud funny.
Stephen Chow is a legend of HK cinema. Unfortunately ~50% of his jokes are cantonese puns that are very hard to translate, so his early works aren't popular overseas. It's a good thing he made Kung-Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer with international audiences in mind.
@CiviliNation 7 So as a kid growing up in Africa you say you understand most of the puns that are even badly translated? Loving the movies is one thing, comprehending the jokes across all movies is something else. Admirable if true O_O
I think it depends on what culture you were raised in, but to my knowledge, Stephen Chow's film does not rely heavily on Chinese culture references (I watched his films way too many times XD). Even when he does, it's pretty superficial so (hopefully) the audience can understand. I mean, some of his films are spoof/parody of some western movie, and was made with 'global audience mindset' in mind. I'm an Indonesian (that's SE Asia); I don't speak Chinese, and I have very little knowledge of Chinese culture, but I haven't got any difficulties understanding his humor or jokes so far. I mean, sure, we probably missed 1 or 2 inside jokes but no, it wasn't 50%. If the audience can't understand 50% of the movie it means the movie is a failure and Stephen Chow was failed as a director and actor :)
As an American I can say most of his movies have a fairly universal appeal. They depend a lot on physical humor, which is universally funny. His older stuff is considerably lower budget, which can be an obstacle to most Western audiences.
@@ididthisonpulpous6526 I am a HongKonger, his earlier works focus more on dialogue humor, I am just so glad that more and more RUclipsrs are reacting to Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. But I am not sure if westerners would like them, some of the jokes are really hard to translate, for example, there was a part where a mad scientist is notorious for making useless invention, he made a "Solar Torch", a torch that turns on automatically if there is light (This is direct translation) This part was so funny in Cantonese but might not have the same effect if it's in English.
The pervert landlord, was Bruce Lees stunt double in most of his movies. In enter the dragon, all the scenes where Bruce Lee flips, it was infact the pervert landlord. Also, the scene in the car when the land lady balls heat fists and doeant speak, was also from a Bruce Lee movie.
Stephen Chow is known to be Bruce Lee fan. In Hustle, he wore Bruce Lee's famous garment, the white top with black pants. And we can see a lot of Jeet Kun Do (plus a bit of Wing Chun) in the fighting choreography.
As far as I remember, pretty much all of the older members of the cast are various legendary stuntmen (and women in the case of Yuen Qiu playing the landlady!) that Stephen Chow gathered together.
And Bruce Leung, who played The Beast, was in Bruceploitation films and, like the actress who played the landlady, had been retired for a long while before this film.
I love her reactions but his smile when he knows something good about to happen is priceless. And he gets a bigger kick out the movie when she catches on . Could watch you guys all day

@@Momon143 Stephen Chow gets high praise from Tarantino, whom called Chow “one of the funniest comedians in cinema” and “Hong Kong’s best actor.” This is from the article “10 Great Kung Fu Movies Recommended By Quentin Tarantino”
The landlady had a martial arts role in a James Bond movie at age 24, The Man with the Golden Gun. She went with a friend who was applying for a role in KFH, and the director recognised her and persuaded her to apply. She gained 40 pounds to take the role.
Wait... THAT WAS HER??? HOLY SHIT! I remember those two young (at the time) actresses. It was kind of a bizarre scene. They saved Bond. So happy people are starting to react to this movie. Literally waited years for that to happen. Bill Murray said at one time this was the funniest movie ever made
The woman who played the landlady in this is Qiu Yuen, a veteran actress who trained in martial arts performance with Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. She learned alongside them and it shows. Hell, one of her last film appearances before this was in James Bond - and she didn't audition for this movie. She was accompanying a younger actress to the auditions and Steven Chow saw her and spent *weeks* begging her to be in his film. Before movie she hadn't acted since 1985, and had recently become a grandmother, and is still one of the best dang things about Hustle.
19:45 - wow this is the only subtitled version I've ever seen translate that section correctly, normally the joke is ignored in the official subtitles! The joke is that the dying Donut speaks his last breath and says "What are you prepared to do?!" In full english instead of cantonese, and then the landlord basically responds, "You are speaking english, why don't you speak chinese?" It's actually a recurring joke in the film with the Landlord character but the subtitles in every version I've ever watched seem to ignore it
Just wanted to mention that watching films with people who haven't seen them is my most favorite thing. Because I can't do that right now, I really appreciate being able to live vicariously through you two. Thanks a bunch. 🙂
I'm delighted that you guys finally got around to this one. Personally, I don't necessarily have to be in a mood, because this film puts me into "a mood". It's a very positive mood. I tend to like the subbed version a bit better, though the dubs are pretty good. The voices were well chosen - for a change. The dubbed one, in some cases, seems a little too "Americanized". In other words, some parts seem too abridged, because slang is occasionally inserted, which changes the meaning, sometimes. I really like the chase scene, which follows up the knife scene, and you can see the landlady approaching in the rear blade mirror. Like everyone else, I recommend "Shaolin Soccer". I also recommend "All for the Winner", for one of his earlier films. It's an experience of its own. When you are done with Stephen Chow, (I will never be) I recommend Jackie Chan. There is a huge wealth of those films. The problem with poll films, is that you often end up watching the good ones first, then the less good ones end up falling slightly short. Hopefully this won't happen with Shaolin Soccer. I recommend starting with "Drunken Master", in the version of your choice. It is one of Jackie Chan's earliest amusement movies. Some of his earlier stuff is a bit more serious classical Kung Fu stuff. I do recommend the early stuff too, but keep in mind it's a tad less refined than the later stuff. Keep going with Stephen Chow. One thing you'll probably notice is that he often goes by "Sing", in whatever he does. You might also like "The Magnificent Scoundrels". Chow likes to do parody stuff, but that one is its own concept.
The fights are choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping, whose work includes The Matrix trilogy, Kill Bill 1&2, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Fist of Legend, etc...
The knife throwing scene always has me doubled over laughing!! I play in Pinball tournaments and the scene with the pinball sound effects is my absolute favorite!!

Another brilliant "revenge of the retired badass" action movie... When people talk about _John Wick, The Equalizer, Taken_ etc they often forget this movie and the Chinaman.
This brings back a lot of good memories with this film. Stephen Chow who starred, wrote, and directed the movie drew inspiration from a lot of movies, cartoons, and childhood imaginations for this movie. Glad you guys enjoyed it.
They should definitely add "Kung Pow! Enter the Fist" to the movie list ... would definitely line up with they "HE HE TIDDIES" theme (all those who have seen the movie know what I'm taking about).

Fun fact - the high-kick the Beast delivered to split the wall into the casino had just a *little* CGI added to make it purely vertical - the actor himself managed to get it almost there by himself.
I read it somewhere that the vertical split was Leung's signature move back in the 70s and 80s. By the 2000s he'd retired from acting. So they had the split done in CGI.
23:11 the reason why the landlord has to cartwheeling his wife is that she will get injured if she goes against the turn that hit from the villain, instead of that she has to go along with the turn to prevent getting hurt just like when people fall from a skateboard they will roll with it 👍
I think the most common description of this movie is "70's kung fu movie mixed with Tex Avery cartoon". Fun Fact: The tabletop RPG "Exalted" lists this movie as one of its inspirational materials, calling it "one of the best examples of Exalted-level martial arts in cinema".
this movie is amazing because even tough it is a comedy movie, it have a real slid story with a realy beautiful mesage... and a realy touching storyline with a wonderful ending... they manage to make a comedy movie, that is still super deep in many regards.
Have you seen Jet Li's The One (with early Jason Statham) This and Kung Fu Soccer are so fun, I haven't watched it in a while, I have a copy but its the wrong region code and I don't have a region free player (mildly peeved) Enjoy, part of the fun with a lot of these is the really dodgy dubbing, especially when the subs are different to the dub, can be very different If you haven't already The Long Kiss Goodnight is worth a look, Older films - The Trouble With Harry, almost any Powell and Pressburger movie (The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp, A Matter Of Life And Death and A Canterbury Tale are all worth a look, especially if you don't mind B&W) and Most Marx Brothers movies (some are a bit cliche and ropey today, but they were the ones inventing the cliches) Akira, My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away are worth the time (IMHO)
I have to admit, usually I hate watching subbed reactions because it's so small and hard to read on my phone, but y'all did it so good. And there really were so many jokes that I had missed in the dubbed version. Great job y'all
This movie is Brilliant (My 3rd Favorite Movie of All-Time). But if you watch it a second time, there are all sorts of "Tells" and hidden reveals at the start of the movie. The Opening Credits has a Butterfly which symbolizes the main character's Metamorphosis. The first time you see the Coolie, he "Kicks" a bag of rice onto his shoulders. Donut's poles are featured prominently in his Congee Shop. The Tailor's Rings hang in his Dress Shop. The first reveal of the Landlord, he drinks "Fluid" revealing his fluid fighting style. The Landlady's first appearance, she's "Screaming", and last when the Beast is revealed, he's surrounded by Frogs... This movie is so brilliantly set up
Forget Citizen Kane, forget A Matter of Life & Death, forget Howerd the Duck, this is the greatest film ever made. Once again I loved your reaction guys, you are definitely the Abbott & Costello of reactors. Love & best wishes from your fan in the UK. 🥰
People say that people who understand his films can't laugh. The bitterness shown in the film is very real. What he has experienced is presented in a funny way
The landlady is the “senior” of Sammo Hung,Jackie Chan & the landlord Yue Hwa is a underrated martial art actor...(also did some some somersault stunts for Bruce Lee). The landlady used to be a stuntwoman and also acted in one of Roger Moore’s James Bond movie. She retired but Stephen Chow the director(Buddha Palm ✋) tried many times to get her to act for this role.
This is one of the best movies ever made for its simplicity. you DONT judge people. Everyone who is bullied in this movie., finds out they picked on someone a little more than they can chew. Its about finding out who YOU are not tearing other people down. The landlord couple were retired taichi and kung fu legends, the tailor was a iron wrist master, the coolie was a kicking master and the baker guy knows the 8 trigram staff.
Yeh this 2nd react I seen that says "i love this movie" and then gives it a 7. There is no movie like this and it has so many influences and callbacks its also chow'' magnus opus.. It at least a 9.
Phenomenal movie, I love how despite how slapstick and over-the-top it was in so much they actually gave it a thought-out conclusion to the grand battle. Siu-Lung Leung's character is so despondent about being the greatest martial artist that he knows of, only caring to find someone who might be able to rival him brought to tears when he found someone worthy to be his master.
I tried Congee after seeing this film and it is delish. :) Also if I remember right, Stephen Chow grew up in Hong Kong watching Looney Tunes cartoons. Soooooo......
Ok, fun facts: he's been around since the late 80's, and he's consistently doing this style of action-comedy. Whether you watch his new stuff - like Shaolin Soccer, or this Kung Fu Hustle - or his old stuff, you'll get tons of good laughs. Enjoy the journey!

Emily needs a shirt with dolphins on it. Then she can make puns on porpoise.
That landlady is one of my favorite movie characters of all time.
23:11 the reason why the landlord has to cartwheeling his wife is that she will get injured if
she goes against the turn that hit from the villain,
instead of that she has to go along with the turn to prevent getting hurt
just like when people fall from a skateboard they will roll with it 👍
I think the most common description of this movie is "70's kung fu movie mixed with Tex Avery cartoon".
Fun Fact: The tabletop RPG "Exalted" lists this movie as one of its inspirational materials, calling it "one of the best examples of Exalted-level martial arts in cinema".
03:20 and I'm already "done," I swear to God, "butterfly in the skyyyyyy" took me out. XD
this movie is amazing because even tough it is a comedy movie, it have a real slid story with a realy beautiful mesage... and a realy touching storyline with a wonderful ending... they manage to make a comedy movie, that is still super deep in many regards.
One of my favorite things about the panorama is watching people bide the time by discovering movies I love.
The landlady and the landlord XD
#relationshipgoal
Yes....Yes!.....YESSSSSS!!!! My all time favorite movie, both in action and comedy!
So. Freaking. GOOD!
Have you seen Jet Li's The One (with early Jason Statham)
This and Kung Fu Soccer are so fun, I haven't watched it in a while, I have a copy but its the wrong region code and I don't have a region free player (mildly peeved)
Enjoy, part of the fun with a lot of these is the really dodgy dubbing, especially when the subs are different to the dub, can be very different
If you haven't already The Long Kiss Goodnight is worth a look,
Older films - The Trouble With Harry, almost any Powell and Pressburger movie (The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp, A Matter Of Life And Death and A Canterbury Tale are all worth a look, especially if you don't mind B&W) and Most Marx Brothers movies (some are a bit cliche and ropey today, but they were the ones inventing the cliches)
Akira, My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away are worth the time (IMHO)
I have to admit, usually I hate watching subbed reactions because it's so small and hard to read on my phone, but y'all did it so good. And there really were so many jokes that I had missed in the dubbed version. Great job y'all
Around the 21 minute mark: You missed the opportunity for a Hot Shots reference "Who put that crab there?!"
@Just SUMM Reactions
Matthew is Kung Pow: Enter the Fist on your list? Perfect movie to watch after this one. Even more ridiculously funny
This movie is so brilliantly set up
28:25 what's that look by matthew when she said " aeeew that's cute " ? ? ? loool
Forget Citizen Kane, forget A Matter of Life & Death, forget Howerd the Duck, this is the greatest film ever made. Once again I loved your reaction guys, you are definitely the Abbott & Costello of reactors. Love & best wishes from your fan in the UK. 🥰
Kung Fu Hustle is one of my favorite movies ever. The knife scene is my favorite bit ever. I never knew Landlords had that type of speed. Lol
People say that people who understand his films can't laugh. The bitterness shown in the film is very real. What he has experienced is presented in a funny way
19:50 "Why don't you speak Chinese?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is going to be FUN! 😁
Loved it, thanks for your reaction
Memories can be painful. To forget may be a blessing.
I didn’t know you can be so deep.
This is nowhere near 7. It got everything. Action, funny, and a lot of heart.
I'd even side eyed people who gave it an 8 point.
Perfect 10
Also if I remember right, Stephen Chow grew up in Hong Kong watching Looney Tunes cartoons. Soooooo......
I grown up with this movie and this is stuck in my head about 20 years
Ok, fun facts: he's been around since the late 80's, and he's consistently doing this style of action-comedy. Whether you watch his new stuff - like Shaolin Soccer, or this Kung Fu Hustle - or his old stuff, you'll get tons of good laughs. Enjoy the journey!
Did you know...
The main character of the shaolin soccer and kung fu hustle main character is the director at the same time....
He is really gifted🎥🤩
Has cannon ball run been mentioned , maybe a car them series . I dunno, But this was fun one guys ... !!
I love your movie reaction ❤❤
7:09-7:20 that way of thinking has gotten a lot of innocent young men in trouble haha. PLEASE don't judge off just appearance. Yes it matters, but it isn't the only thing you should look for
I love how she kissed her husband with the cigarette still sticking out of her mouth.
3:10 The joke didn't land for me until Emily started to laugh at her own joke. She was so pleased with herself that I couldn't help but bust out laughing with her.
😂 I like you. You're funny.
You should, if you haven't, watch Shaolin Soccer, I laughed alot more with that one, don't get me wrong I love kung fu hustle.
A shame, I've still neer been ale to see that one.
