  • We've had moles destroying our yard for years. I've used the Wire Tek "Mole Eliminator" trap but in this video I give the GopherHawk snare trap a try. Spoiler alert: I caught the mole (and it's pictured at the end so avoid it if that bothers you).

Thank you for doing this comparison video. I've attempted to use the gopher hawk for several years to no avail (moles were superficial in their digging). Saw this vid regarding wire-tek. Ordered from Amazon, received today, deployed it, & a few hours later: bagged a mole.

I have been dealing with moles for a long time now so I decided to fight back. Tired of the little boogers destroying my yard. I purchased traps like these on Amazon. The first couple of times my son put them out for me, nothing. Finally after locating a new run, he put out one of the traps. The next day we noticed it had tripped. When he pulled it up, there was a dead mole. I was so happy. One down and I don't know how many to go.

I’ve had really good results with the wiretek. There is a trick to it. You have to align the trap perfectly in line to the tunnel. If it’s crooked or on a corner it may not trip. Also moles move constantly And they don’t always come back to an existing tunnel so you have to explore your yard and move traps if you find a new tunnel. I just caught one this morning 😂. 9 last year. 5th one this year

My scissor traps work wonderfully. It can be tricky to set them properly sometimes and you need to clean the dirt off of the trap to help prevent it from triggering too easily but every tool requires some level of maintenance. I've heard good things about the trap your using but the scissor style trap is less noticeable by the kids that live on either side of me

I have both deployed right now as it’s prime time for moles in my yard. I agree with your comments about the scissor trap.

Good video, but I did the exact opposite. Over the last decade we've tried many types of mole traps that failed. A few years ago we discovered the Gopher Hawk. It worked great until we made a garden. Everything changed for the bad. The moles are ruining our garden and lawn. We get false hits and find our Gopher Hawks tipped over empty. We think the problem is the moles seem to be running shallower. So, to attempt to save our lawn and garden, we're switching to the Wire Tek.

I consistently have moles in my yard. I got two last year and one so far this year. I don't know why but they keep moving into my yard. I know that moles will sometimes use the same runs as another mole but they're fairly territorial unless it's mating season. There's a bit of wildlife in my area but how many do i have to catch before they quit moving in? My trap kills them in case you were wondering. But my preferred method of dealing with creatures because i love animals but, i just can't take it anymore

We water when our neighbors don’t. That encourages worms and grubs (mole food) so they live our yard. They like the previous tunnels and the sprinkler system trenches because it’s softer dirt to dig through. At one point I did a perimeter of grub killer and that kept them out (no food) and some castor granules (they don’t like to dig in). It’s a constant battle.

Love the design. I find my mole tunnels are not that deep so it's hard to set the trap shallow. Wish they would make a smaller version for moles.

    Nice VW tee shirt :-)
Anyway, I can't speak to the Gopher Hawk but the Wire Tek is much better than any other scissor and spike traps I've used.
That's over thirty years of war with moles on our property. I've only had one instance where a trap was tripped and no mole.
Find an active run, flatten a small section with the foot, the blades push easily in, set the trap with your foot.
It's kind of an acquired skill, setting straight and perpendicular to the ground in the middle of the run, the base plate square and even. One trick I use, once set, pull slightly up on the trap without tripping it. Lightly wiggling it up works for me.
It helps clear a path in the dirt for the blades to move freer. In terms of ease and effectiveness, nothing beats the Wire Tek IMO.
BTW how do you get the mole off the Gopher Hawk? Is it as effective in killing the moles quickly as the Wire Tek does?

    • @onFIREfamily
      @onFIREfamily  3 года назад +2

Thanks! You can remove the mole by pushing down on the end of the tube while holding the other part. Very easy. I found the wire tek harder to unload. I do find the GopherHawk to be less lethal (often capturing just a head or foot but requiring intervention to dispatch the critter). Good luck on Mole Season!!

@@onFIREfamily I am not particularly interested in watching or activity dispatching a live mole or Gopher.
I think I would prepare a bucket of water ahead of time, dripping the end of the Gopher Hawk in the bucket, and coming back 5 minutes later.

My first catch was a rock with the Gopher Hawk 😂 also make sure that the wires on the trap aren’t in line with the tunnel, spin so they are open to crawl right in. Also I use the tube opposite to the point with the probing handle removed to make a clean hole with no dirt push, spin and twist it in the dirt, then use the handle from the probe to pack down any loose dirt within the hole. Put in trap and put a little dirt around the trap so no light enters the hole.

Between 2020 and 2021 I have caught 9. 5 with the Wire Tek, 4 by walking slowly around my yard with a shovel when there lots of activity, looking soil that's moving. Then plunging the shovel in behind the mole and flipping the mole up onto the the grass and...well...giving the mole a stern talking to.

Can you see the difference? You are using a gopher trap to catch gophers. The other trap is a mole trap to catch moles. They are two separately animals. Gophers make big dirt mounds and moles make tunnels under the grass roots. You can luck out catching one with the wrong trap but it's easier to use the right trap for which it is made for.

Fools! The WireTek trap is 10 times better than the gopherhawk trap!! If you place them correctly, the wiretek will catch 100% of the time! Ask yourself one common sense question: Would you rather have a trap that leaves part of thr trap in the tunnel? Or one that doesn't leave anything in the hole?? Do yourself a favor, save money and just buy wiretek traps (not the Chinese versions either). Makes sure you buy the flat bottom one
