Honestly, it sounds like it has the power and torque for another gear or basically changing the sprocket for highway speed. I have no doubts this engine could touch 95-100 easily with the right gearing.
Holy shit why does it have so much power mine can't even wheelie in 2nd
What year? May be time for a rebuild. Start with the basics of maintenance and a compression check
My1989 kdx 200 DC does 86 someone else built it before I bought it has v3 reeds yatta yatta yatta and other stuff done and I weigh 160 I love mine but yeah spot on speed 78 to 90 depending on rider size
i had a 1990, first gen of liquid cooled theyre great bikes
That's pretty impressive, considering my XR250R with stock gearing will top out at only 67 mph. I've ridden a KDX220 once last year and it was definitely more powerful than my XR250. It even seemed to have about the same low end torque also, nice bike the KDX!
Thanks man!! And yeah it really surprised me how well it goes compared to the 4 strokes of the same time period, it keeps up pretty well in the woods with most other bikes the 6 speed helps a lot too!
Oh dude I had a plated '95 XR great bike but no Earth Mover in the power department -- I had two NX250's that would just leave it for dead. In fact the NX250 could definitely keep up with an uncorked WR250R -- in a straight line, on even ground. Not so good as anything more than a fire road trail bike. My KDX 220 with the usual external mods will handily walk all of those and the WR250F
I have had most of the Japanese enduro bikes I had a KMX 200 they are like KDX , I liked the KDX better, I have had 4 Yamaha DT125R s and a Honda MTX 125 and a 91 YZ 250 , I would rather had a DTR or a KDX
Never had a dtr but always wanted one!
@@hashtag_moto_ yea they are good, but hard to find these days
KDX 220 best bike ever fuckin made nice video man
Thank you!! I love this bike too I questioned a few things about it at first but throughout the summer it ended up being my all time favorite bike and will never leave me because of that
120... mate you really cant be serious, the extra hp needed after 100mph just isn't possible in my opinion.... if so why not race it in production race class as they dont hit 120 so you're guaranteed a win...pmsl
You should honestly have way more subs you deserve it👍
Thanks for the support!!
I just bought a 97 220 so far so good!! But never enough 😂What pipe would you recommend and if the reeds are a must?
Great vid, thank you for posting it, and it being stock..... top man, Great vid
Been riding my 05, 220 since new. Have never touched the engine. Other than the usual stuff, tires, plugs, oil changes, etc. she just keeps plugging along. Probably put most miles on this year alone due to covid. Riding nearly every day.
I’ve got 227 hours on my top end bottom end from 2002 now! Just keeps going and going!
I’ve got a 2000 220 and also never touched the engine. 2nd owner since 2002. Has an FMF gnarley and Powercore II and jetted. She fires up every time and I’m not the most consistent with maintenance. Such a great trail bike
@@joe429t I love mine!
I enjoyed this video while researching a bike I am buying. Thumb up, subbed. Can't wait to see your newer content.
thank you, i sadly sold the bike after several years, but i will buy her back one day. New videos are coming on cars if you are interested feel free to give them a look. Also my instagram is in the channel description if you have any kdx related questions!
I might have to get one soon, how close are you to getting monetized?
I'm not sure to be honest I think you have to have atleast 1000 subs and 1000 hours watched on your videos per month I'm atleast half way there though man!!
very accurate test honestly. I used to own a kdx220 ab 5 years ago, fastest I ever pushed it was 92mph downhill 5th gear pinned 😂 these things are monsters dude
You mean 6th.
@@adamsmith5913kdx only has 5 gears
@@DirectoutdoorsTVnah man my kdx220 has 6
Nvmd I was thinking of my old bike
a ttr 125 with a 150 kit and every other mod you could possibly do would still be waaaaaaaay slower than a kdx 220
That’s true
Nice bike, sounds great. I have an 04 200 with a new top end, same reeds, and same FMF duo. Do you recall what your jetting is?
Stock jetting, 1.5 turns out AFR screw, middle needle position and the bike runs crisp
Wait a minute.
"It's just been rebuilt 4 hours ago..."
"I'm about to do a top speed run...."
Whoa. I can understand running things in fast but I might take a couple days before wringing the snot out of it :)
No such thing as breaking in your engine. Maybe a heat cycle to bring the rings up to temp and temper them but that’s it
Breaking in are my heat cycles and then taken it a little easy for the first hr to see if anything comes unglued from recently being torn apart but that’s when I’m patient lol. 4 hrs is way past any (break in period one could think of). Send it
@@Junior-fd8ux exactly
I would say, definitely "rebuilt 4 hours ago.... Top speed run".... If it blow, go back to your shop and rebuild it properly.
i agree. i do 3 15 minute heat cycles the last of which i rev it once every 5 mins. after that i ring it out and let it rip!!
This is one of my favorite bikes.
Same here!
I know a man named mike robshaw he won a 5 trail race in France 20 years in a row with a stock 1998 kdx 200
Congrats on the 500 subs!!
Thanks man!!
I am looking at a 2004 220kdx... 2,500 miles $2000... is that kinda high for a old bike? It has turn signals but will have to get title bond. To get a tag ride on the road.. What's the lowest offer I should make on it? Someone painted the frame a goofy creamy blue... plastics are blue... I would definitely have to strip it done go back original colors... sorta ugly now tho..lol
I would offer the guy 1600$ honestly these things are becoming pretty valuable. Just sold mine for 3600$
I love the old kdx. They last way longer than the race geard 2 strokes. I rebuilt mine last may and it blew up in October. Pretty impressive. I’m a Honda guy but I’ll choose my kdx over my crf anyday.
Me too man me too!!
I’m going to look at 98 pretty much all oem kdx 220 that’s had a top end recently done this morning waiting on the call. Iv always riden 125s and 250s.. I don’t like revving the 125s to death plus I’m not a little guy so I’m a 250 t2 guy.. iv never rode a KDX period but have always wanted one and hoping it will be what I’m looking for power wise. 1800$ for a clean one in this market at that, if it’s good I can’t say no lol
hope all worked out well, i loved my 220 never should have sold it!!!
You have the gnarly desert pipe on there? (also called the rev pipe)
Actually it turns out to be the woods pipe, the guy told me desert and I didn’t know any different. I had the gnarly on another kdx I bought and realized the difference
@@hashtag_moto_ Good to know, I have the torque pipe (woods) on mine too. Read that the rev pipe is more desirable on the 220. But mine still doesn't ring out as well as yours does in this video. I might have to play with my jetting some more.
@@SkillCollectors jetting, air filter, and reeds
I have boysen power reeds, it’s well jetted for the pipe, and I popped out all those little foam blocks in the airbox to give it a little more airflow
@@SkillCollectors it was also cold in this video and these bikes run great in the cold my other 200 wirh the rev pipe was so much fun in the snow. It screamed!
@@hashtag_moto_ Also a good point. I'm currently tuning it in Vegas and it's anywhere from 80-100 degrees right now when I'm riding. It's getting close, may just need to wait a month for better weather.
Dual-sport? No, it's a real enduro bike. KDX200SR was a dual sport. It had a steel tank and smaller 28mm carb.
This is correct information sorry for the false information in the video
I'm thinking about selling my YZ426 and getting a kdx. Do you prefer to 200 or the 220?
Personally I prefer the 220 over the 200 but either bike is a very good very reliable bike
I am buying one this weekend. 2003 kdx 220 for $2000 (low miles) They seem to be just as much a classic as they are reliable - is my observation correct? thx for the video
Yes they’re amazing reliable fun bikes!!
Hi what’s the app you are using?
i have a 220 kdx with a bigger cam loabs and top spead dident feel like any where near 82
A two stroke with a cam huh?
how does it have bigger cam lobes without having a cam
I’m about 5’7 will this bike fit me?
If you adjust the suspension down it should fit you fine! I’m 5,9-5,10ish and I fit pretty well on it
I have the same bike. Mines a 98 though. It's an animal. Bored out 25 over, resized front and rear sprockets. Love the vid!
It’s an animal? LOL try riding a 500 two-stroke
Shadowdust, have you ever actually ridden a 500 2 stroke?lol Ive owned both a honda and husqvarna 2 stroke. The husqvarna I bought when I was 16.
@@michaelcorreia4097 lol I was going to reply back to him try riding a 500 yourself first but you beat me to it lol. Wish I had that Honda cr500 you had
I am looking at getting a 2000 version that's just had full rebuild, as a 2 stroke that should hit 120mph with a bit of tuning work done, my old 98 KMX used to get to 110mph easily with a port tune and gutted standard expansion chamber & DEP tailpipe, now at 56 I won't need to tune the 220 for anymore power, I just need to lower the seat height a few inches, for the short legs I have
they're not your average 2 stroke. these kdxs are kind of slow for their size. the stock top speeds of these bikes is high 70s low 80s. theyre slower than a 125 2 stroke on the same gearing. i lost all but 2 races to 125 2 strokes on this, and a freshly rebuilt 04 200 with porting and head work, reeds, a full fmf system and a larger carb. the 200 was faster off the line than the 220 even when it was stock. the 220 is more of a cruiser or enduro bike. they lose miserably to ktm150s or most 125 2 strokes
@Hashtag Moto I love 2 strokes, I had my first aircooled 1975 DT125 in 1979 and many 2 strokes since & tuned most of them when I learned about them, I wish RUclips was about back then, when we only had a black & white TV lol My best 2 stroke was my 87 Aprilia AF1 125 it started life on the road with just 12hp but ended up on the track with 38hp after much tuning including some magicians work on the CDI as electrickery stuff is not my thing.
@@rickburnout666 oh wow aprilla you don’t hear that name much anymore!
@Hashtag Moto not so many of them now, my last Aprilia was a V twin Mille 1000 in 2003 a few of my friends now have the new V4's and one has a RS250 two smoke that had more HP than my old Ducati 748
@@rickburnout666 I knew a guy with an rs250 pretty sweet bikes. Crazy the power you can pull out of a small motor like that
I just got a kdx200. What shoukd i run it it for premix? 40:1? Previous owner said he always ran 38:1
I run 32:1 in all my bikes and jet it accordingly. From the factory they call for 32:1 I run amsoil dominator 32:1 with 93 octane fuel
@@hashtag_moto_ oh okay. Mine is bone stock besides boysen reeds. Appreciate the feedback! Also havent gotten to ride it yet. What do these bikes have for power?
John Brown bone stock they’re not very powerful put a fmf gnarly desert pipe and the power core 2 with houses reeds and air box mod step the main jet up one size and it’ll be a whole new machine! I would still run 32:1
@@hashtag_moto_ okay sweet! Askikg because ive only ridden a kx80 2t nothing bigger and just stepped up a few cc to a kdx200😅 should be a whole new animal compared to the 80
John Brown yes they really are they’re great bikes if you can learn how to control it and keep nimble on the bike it will be a great bike for you!
Good video
How old are you
Never saw the comment I’m 15
Seven minutes to show me wide-open throttle?, This new generation sucks. It should be a 30 second video.
just skip through it if it's such a problem lmao
