I thought the BeatYo ship happened because in JSRF, Beat voiced concern for Yoyo when the latter had gone missing, and was especially proactive about searching for him.
My theory as to why Yoyo is popular in the fandom is because of the prominence JSRF gave him. He got a more striking appearance, he's the first playable character, and there's that whole arc about him being kidnapped, replaced by a robot, and needing to be rescued.

I ship Yo-Yo/Beat. Why? Because Yo-Yo is Autistic, Gay and uses no pronouns/He-Him and Beat is ADHD, Gay and uses He-Him pronouns. I know that's not enough, but it's enough for me. Plus I do like the idea of sexual tension between the two. Also when I learned this I realized that Yo-Yo and Beat were gay before it was cool. Maybe Sega's true problem is they have too much foresight?
YoYo was always one my faves in both games, strange but also kinda cool to see he gets so much love (pun intended lol)
