  • I went foraging and found this giant puff ball mushroom. I've dreamt about making a mushroom double cheeseburger from it for months and so when September came here in the UK I decided to have a go. In the film I go out foraging for mushrooms and then return to show you mu mushroom cheese burger recipe. Lemme know what you think below

    Foraging for mushrooms can be a very precarious business. I know an experienced forager who picked the wrong mushroom and now has to have regular dialysis. So be warned.

      Absolutely. But Giant Puffballs are, in the UK at least, are one of the safest and most unmistakable fungi to identify. The Golden Rule is if you have any doubt then don't eat it.

      Puffballs are pretty easy tho. you want a smooth exterior & white interior. I've done the spiny...but that can be dangerous waters.
      Smooth, white w correct root is all you gotta know.

    I used to regularly toe-punt puffballs when I was a kid back in the UK. Didn’t even know that they were edible.
    I’m not sure if they grow out here in Oz.

      @@davesandford226 We would go out behind my grandparents farm towards the river to search for them. We'd slice them up and fry them like a steak. I'd almost forgotten about them. Nostalgia is wonderful.

    Love to see the mushroom sourcing. Brilliant chefs are great don't get me wrong but I like the more "down to earth" stuff.

    I will cook it, but not with the huge puffy mushroom. I live in Sweden and you can't find them here. But we have other mushrooms! I'll also skip the coriander as I am in the 14 % who find it tasting like Yes (other brands are available). Parsley instead. That sexy jam will come in handy for more than only this burger!!!

    Well John 10/10 I would eat, but when you described the taste you mentioned everything except the mushroom! Is it just padding for the other ingredients? What does she taste like!

    Think making this burger with polystyrene instead of that mushroom it would taste the same. Peppers, coriander, blue cheese.

    I found a puffball the size of my head in my backyard last year, but it was past its prime. The kids and I had a good time spreading the spores around. My 5-year-old son kept saying the puffs of dark spores looked like "cartoon stink". I was sure we'd have puff balls everywhere this year but I haven't found any yet. I wonder if it takes a couple years for them to grow from the spores?

    tommorow i go into the forest here in germany to harvest some chanterells, porcini ;> i love wild mushrooms, one of the best gifts from mother earth.

    Well... I love mushrooms.. And ive never heard of the Puffball Mushroom.. Does it grow in the States? Anyway, its huge.. its like you have to walk the land looking for skulls on the ground.. Well, i will find this mushroom one day.. and you made me hungry.. This sandwich looks great! Nice vid.

    I would tooootally eat and cook this !!! I loooove mushroom. And I love going mushroom hunting. However I don’t know these giant room.... do you have tips on How to make sure it’s THE one and not its toxic cousin (everyone have a toxic cousin right ? Even mushroom... :D)

    Looks great! I've got some home grown chillies that are begging to be made into a jam!
    Any tips on finding puffballs? I live in a pretty rural area in the North West of England with both woods and open fields nearby so I figure they should be around somewhere, but I've never seen any around here (and I think the largest I've ever seen anywhere was about the size of a tennis ball).

    JQ, are there unmistakable indicators that what one finds is indeed an edible puffball and not some look-alike that might make you sick (or worse)? Is there an etiquette for collecting them as we have here in the US when foraging for morels or other mushrooms, that you collect them in a mesh bag so the spores can be distributed whilst traipsing through the countryside?

      There the easiest of the 🍄family to forage as there’s no impersonators. Mesh bag is a great idea mate 👍

    Always wanted to forage for my own mushrooms but I'd be too scared to pick a poisonous one by mistake! I am confident with morels though because I have done that before.

      Puff balls are the entry level forage mushroom as it’s so distinguishable & no impersonators

    never seen a mushroom like that Chef ..... but will i cook it/eat it the answer is no ... i don't like mushrooms but tomorrow i will be making a chicken burger with a chicken breast & panko bread crumb lightly shallow fried in olive oil then cooked in the oven then slice open a Scottish home made morning roll (as i like to bake my own breads & scones) and actual tomatoes from my mates garden and some rocket leaves instead

    While this does indeed look wonderful about the only thing from the 'burger" I would eat would be the bun. Not a fan of anything else that went into what looks to be a fine meal. I am not seeing my being able to change 49 years of of being a picky eater sadly, pretty much a meat & potatoes kind of guy.

    ..... last time I ate one of those was just after a floatation crossing at the pond in Warcop in the North East. It was cooked (fried) with army butter ..... thats it. 1993.
