Giant Puffballs - Foraging, Cooking and Tasting

  • Some friends of mine have a local orchard and one of them invited me to forage giant puffballs in part of their adjacent woodland.
So let's take a look at this curious fungus, and cook some and eat it.
Foraging books sometimes mention that this fungus can grow to such size that it has been mistaken for sheep, although tantalisingly, they never seem to cite who made that mistake. I suppose it is plausible - the largest recorded specimen was apparently 1.62 metres across.

When he was a kid, my brother and some friends found a giant puffball in the shape of a head. They carved out eyes, a nose, and teeth and put it on a tall stick. Since it was a long walk home, they put the stick in a ditch for passing motorists to admire their artwork.
They thought nothing of it until the next day when police came to investigate the human skull that had almost caused accidents. When my brother investigated later, he found the puffball broken up and stomped flat.

one of my favorite edibles to find. the aroma and texture is just delightfully tender!
-you can eat them raw. thin strips are a great addition to a salad.
-briefly grilling or searing them on _brutal_ heat brings out a lot more aroma. (a lick with a gas cooker or blowtorch works too)
-dont toss the peels, dried they develop a lovely aroma. especially good in chickin stock.
-finely minced in a french omlette. that's the ultimate use, IMHO.

Story time: When my mum was little, she saw this giant football on her grandmother's lawn. So mum goes barreling up to it and boots that ball into the stratosphere!
