    • @manlystyleunder50

      no, it is not the correct way
      in fact, it is a terrible way to sharpen your bits to only 50% efficiency and have to regrind them very regularly
      you might as well buy new bits every time if you are going to sharpen them like this, since you are such an amateur

    CONGRADULATION SIR. From all the videos on YOU TUBE on how to sharpen drill bits (I,have watched maybe 50 or more) you are the only one that have the moves that will come only with experience . All the others , have , I would say , beginners ways to sharpen drills . It still does the job " ok" but nothing like the real thing. I'have worked 45 years as a maintenance machinist and ground lots of drill bits. And
    all the beginners watching , keep on grinding, you will get better. No need to buy expensive machine to do that job.

      Thank you! You may not believe me, but I made this video right after I learned how to sharpen drills. And I learned in just half a day after watching a video of an old Russian master from a tool shop (he transferred his videos to Russian RUclips - Rutub). His name is Viktor Leontyev. Probably later I improved my skill a little more by sharpening a box with fifty dull old drills; I had it lying around since Soviet times.

      Well good for you , but you must in a trade related to machining in some ways.........
      Next step , try to make your drill bits center less........ All you need is a grinding wheel very sharp on the sides. No radius........JP.........

    Finally a good video that speaks from my heart. You don't need any equipment, just a little knowledge and practice.
    I learned it properly in 1955 and can happily confirm what is shown here.
    Unfortunately, it is not easy to see that when grinding, a slight rotary movement is carried out in addition to the tilting movement.
    As already mentioned, the point angle of 118° is not that important. However, chip removal is only more difficult in the case of larger deviations and deeper bores.

    • @grain-diose
      @grain-diose  10 месяцев назад +1

      No, I don’t do any rotation at all, it’s an unnecessary action. It may have seemed that way in the video, to be honest, it’s very difficult to show in a high-quality manner when shooting a video - the horizontalness of the drill, the edge, maintaining the angle, etc. Yes, I saw in other videos some people rotate, but this is unnecessary - the back surface is naturally rounded in the process of raising the top of the drill.

    I've been watching a lot of videos showing complicated jigs for bit sharpening. After watching this I used my vertical sander with 80 grit and some 60 degree lines on the support. I sharpened 5 bits in 5 minutes. I used my magnifying glasses. Thank you.

    • @grain-diose
      @grain-diose  3 года назад +2

      This is the standard sharpening of drills, as do ordinary workers in the tool shop, plain and simple, just a couple of hours of practice. I am glad that it benefits many people. Manufacturers and youtubers take advantage of their people's ignorance, invent and sell various gadgets (from which there is no sense) to people far from this business.
      I watched a video of one device (about 50-60 euros), an ordinary person was trying to sharpen a drill. When he showed the result in close-up, I realized: point 3 is not fulfilled there, as in my video, there is no bevel for cutting into the metal. Of course, such a drill will not sharpen, but only warm up, which was shown by the person in his video. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I saved this link.
      Yes, magnifying glasses are desirable, especially if the drills are of small diameter, I also use that.

    Of all the sharpening method , I like your method most. First , you are the only one who said tip angle is not so important as long as it is symmetrical, and you proved it . Second, without worrying about the tip angle, the rest becomes simple . I had tried your method, and I can get the drill bit to drill again in less than 5 minutes . Thanks .

    Good video for beginners! As a machinist/tool and die maker you could not drill D2,A2 or stainless with a 90° angle lol. 118° which is the standard angle struggles and dulls quickly. Anything above stainless is 135° split point. You also peck drill through almost all metal with a HSS drill. I run both HSS and carbide drills.

    Excellent ! Parmi toutes les vidéos que j'ai regardées, elle me paraît la plus complète de bout en bout. En effet elle est formatrice par une explication des points importants à comprendre et respecter pour atteindre le résultat sans bricolage. J'adhère à cette méthode avec succès, bravo Monsieur !

    Maybe I'm old and grew up around this stuff . But I am surprised there is a RUclips video teaching people how to sharpen a drill bit . WOW !! I thought anyone who worked with drilling things would have and should know this stuff !!

      Any trained person should know that, but the average amateur has seldom the opportunity to get such knowledge without someone to teach them. This is a very good starting point.

    Thank you!... Very informative, i like the way he present it... simple, direct to the point and straight forward. Furthermore, he talks slowly and explain it clearly this is how video tutorial should be especially for non-english speaking individual.👍

    very good video. Thank you! On the degrees used determines the hardness and thickness of materials. You don't want your drill to grab on thin material but be productive on thick hard material. Your narrow flute helps with speed but also doesn't walk on the material as much. Thanks again.

    I once needed to drill a 1 1/2 inch hole in steel. The only bit I found was broke in half so I flattened it and resharpened it. It cut through that steel plate like butter. My old boss taught me how and gave me a box of dull bits to practice.

    As a Fitter and Turner in Oz its how we start to learn but if you look at that lovely demonstration at 5 min which tells a bigger story. If you look behind the cutting face their is a big gap, this needs to be filled but not higher that cutting face, this is what the drill "rests" on in the hole, it stops it from shaking and drilling of center and more importantly biting like a tiger when it breaks through the other side. + their is no need to thin the web on a small drill especially as small as 5mm, look at a new drill they don't come thinned.
    But for DIY its a great video to get you to start to re sharpen your drills and understand the basic's.
