    Man I’m really invested in this because I have a 3208(naturally aspirated) that was bored out, rebuilt, and been sitting for +25 years. My family farm bought it, rebuilt the engine, used it for a month before they bent the frame in the truck. Ever since then it’s been sitting. I’ve always wanted to start a project, but I had no clue what to do. You’re living my dream man!!!! I love the videos keep it up!

    Hey started that project 10 years ago. It’s a f350 1990 set up 3208 cat twin turbo on it. 5 speed, 4 speed behind, and a 205 transfer case. When it comes to turbos you can buy the manifolds for the 3204 cat, and the turbo will come out the side.

    I've heard similar arguments about 3208 engines being 'bad' engines. I think they are pretty good powerplant if not pushed into too much HP range. Just bought a 3208 for my project build. Cheers 👍😁

    I really like your take on the reliability aspect of the engine, all engines have a weak spot and if properly accounted for then it's all good. The cooling is a non issue because it's all going to be made again with the swap completely different from the original use case, and the whole sleeve thing is also a mute point since it can still be resurfaced if needed and after a million km of wear then sure just bore it out and sleeve it, but as you said sleeves are sometimes the cause of engine problems like in the rover 4.6L v8 where it is quite common to have sleeves slipping

    I use Siginaw power steering pumps, Ford pumps are 1100 psi relative to Sig pumps, Ford uses on diesel vans, due to 1400 psi. Also easy to find and rebuild. My idi turbo comes off the driver's side exhaust manifold, y-piped in from the right side underneath. I've often considered making my own, plated manifolds using black pipe from the home Depot, they are cast, and bevelled, 45's, 90',s, etc already made, for a turbo on each side.. it's all about the grunt torque anyway

      We ran that 3208 Cat in the 82-83 model school buses. They were naturally aspirated and they would walk dogs and kick cats with the power output. Throw a turbo on it and it’ll be like a juvenile delinquent left to their own devices.
      Not enough attention’s being paid to the old International Harvester’s DTA-360 and its bigger brother the DTA-466 also found in school buses and medium grade trucks. If you’re wanting to go with an automatic transmission the Allison AT-643 is a direct bolt-in for your 3208 and similar I-H engines. All are mechanical and requires no electronic controllers

    • @stephenmiller5023
      @stephenmiller5023 Месяц назад +1

      Sorry to say this , but as an Ex Caterpillar mechanic , I say again that naturally aspirated 3208 will not tolerate a lot of boost as is . The marine versions had upgraded pistons , oil squirters under the “ V” inside the block to shoot oil up underneath the pistons for cooling & much larger oil cooler & intercooler / heat exchangers that used cold salt water running around the closed system cooling that all worked in conjunction with a mechanical boost control that increased fuel delivery as boost increased to supply proper air / fuel ratios to keep them alive at the 400 plus hp levels . Twin turbos will “ look cool” but be prepared to have issues if you “ shoot for the moon “ power & boost wise . Running over your crankshaft laying in the road after the bottom end let’s go won’t be fun . Those engines weigh in just around 1100 pounds , and front suspension will need to be set up for added weight as well & add in whatever trans weight you choose to use also . Not a hater here at all , but a realist . Have fun as I’ve commented before .

    You might be able to use the NA exhaust manifolds just flip them to point upwards. You could use the 6.0 air intake location. Just do it for both side to get a cold air intake for both turbos if your not running a intercooler or even if you do. The 7.3 frame you used for mockup may have stronger leaf springs in the front for the weight of the diesel. The gasser won’t so you be want to switch some parts around.

    the injection pump body needs to be overbore'd with larger injection pistons, to spool out a turbo. they are non-emissions engines so they were built to be emissions compliant. 5 low on the 10 speed will be a bunch of nothing gears in a F250, should be able to take off in 8th gear up a 20 degree hill from a stop on the hill all the way up to 60km/hr then into 9th... get a double overdrive transfer case.

    16:20 if ya got a metal yard near by, sleeves can be made for a 3208 that down size it to 9.6L, just 2.4mm sheet metal and a roller jig weld the pipe seam and add another welded on roller ring for the deck seat. JB epoxy press fit then the 3126 steel top pistons go in with a wrist pin bushing change. if ya pull something real heavy, its the rev and dumps on the clutch that brake the drive shafts because the stall torque is three times higher then the SAE ratting 2krpm 550lbft, and 1500lb stall, at 4krpm that's 3000lbft stall at the clutch. dump moves a little rev out dump rev out dump till it runs out of gear then it stays floored in 2nd... their are old 3208's with cast iron cranks then their are new 3208's that got those laser etched 4340 stainless assemblies, one being a $10'000 3208 and the other being a $50k quote from CAT as mentioned. 70K for a CAT 3406 15L. proper reman 3208's run smother then the 5.4L gassers.

    no.... if you put a turbo on that engine it WILL blow up. the non-turbo 3208 has higher compression ration than a factory turbo 3208. the turbo 3208's had piston cooling jets for each piston. and pretty sure a different cam shaft ... also that engine is around 1800 lbs! its super heavy! so start bracing up your frame. you'd be miles ahead starting with a factory turbo engine.

    I mean i get it its a Caterpillar 3208, but its like exactly the same hp & torque as the 7.3 its replacing so whats the gain. Just mechanical diesel stuff? You could put injectors, turbo & ts5\hydra in a 7.3 and double its power. 3206 i would understand more like deboss did. Also id keep the air compressor on the engine for on-board air & air bags, horns etc. I'm not hating just wondering why, cause surely this will cost much more than keeping the 7.3? Do you though, I'll keep watching.

    • @STROKER-GARAGE
      @STROKER-GARAGE  Месяц назад

      The compressor would not fit under the hood.
      The cat 3208 is less problematic than the 7.3

    So those turbos look 10x too small like that big ol iron behemoth... Diesel turbos are huge... Ebay a Detroit Diesel turbo you would see and the turdos you have would work for the 5.4 though

    • @STROKER-GARAGE
      @STROKER-GARAGE  Месяц назад

      Yes. They are small, I do agree, I am not going to be pushing much pressure but they are the right air volume for the engine…. I will upgrade if the perform poorly, these are just to get the build started.

  • @Sinister12v

    Man I would really urge you to reconsider the 3208. I just think it'll be more trouble than it's worth. My dad had one in an old tandem dump for about ten years, and it seems like he was constantly working on it. Rebuilt it once, replaced it once. They don't make much power, they weigh a ton, and you'll never get it to not leak. Have you thought about a 7.8? Those are a way better engine. That's what my dad is running currently. They're P-pumped so after I tweaked the pump there's plenty of power, way more torque, and he never has the hood up. Says he wished he would've had a 7.8 this whole time. A 3116 is also an option.
