  • Melatonin is the hormone that tells our brains and bodies it’s time to sleep. But if you think melatonin supplements will significantly improve your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep, you may have been misled. Sleep scientist Matt Walker shares how this “hormone of darkness” really works.
Sleep -- we spend one-third of our lives doing it, but what exactly do we get out of it? And how can we do it better? In this TED series, sleep scientist Matt Walker uncovers the facts and secrets behind our nightly slumber. Check out more episodes on TED.com: go.ted.com/sleepingwithscience

Same here. Melatonin helps me sleep deeper. I have narcolepsy and often times, falling asleep is not an issue. But my sleep is very light and I wasn't getting enough rest and wake up tired no matter how long I slept. It didn't cure narcolepsy, but helped a bit. Like what supplements supposed to do.

I slept 2 hours every 48hours for a a year when I got diagnosed insomnia, and accidentally tried cannabis for the first time and finally could sleep. Then since discovery of melatonin I get more quality sleep.
But when I slept as little as I did then everything was dim and hazy, a whole year went by almost like a dream, with the same memory losses aswell like when you try and remember a dream you had, its on the tip of your tongue but not really there.
It’s horribly scary tbh, now im in my 30’s and has since gotten diagnosed with (c)ptsd and adhd which can explain some of the root issues. Anyway, melatonin and a puff of cannabis every now and then and I sleep enough and good enough to function.
      And thats enough for me.

I used melatonin for some time, and it really helped me to adjust my sleeping pattern to better hours. It helped me fall asleep, but it also left me a bit more groggy in the morning. However without that aid in falling asleep, I could not get to sleeping at normal hours at night, I'd be up till 2 or 3 am, wake up at 8, feeling tired, but in the evening, would be up till 2 or 3 again. The melatonin helped me fall asleep at 11 pm and get a decent night's sleep and over time my body settled into that rhythm (mostly).
I think in addition to what's mentioned in the video a problem might be acclimatization, after some time, the melatonin simply did not help me anymore. Sometimes, my pattern breaks, and I try to use it again to help me get back to 11-8ish but it doesn't seem to work :-(.

Yup. It's barely a 'patch' on a grid of a dozen holes. Sleep is complex, and, if you're not good at it, trust me... you'll die young. It is what it is.
Personally, I'm ALMOST willing to begin searching for illegal means to help me with my ailments... but I also know that absolutely *NOTHING* (and I mean nothing) can help me. Again, it is what it is. I have to live and die with it.
Lack of REM sucks. I have known for decades, because... no matter where I am, I'm surrounded by people who sleep with ZERO ISSUES. Snore like morons... sleep through horrendous clatter... nothing bothers them, nothing (and I mean nothing) keeps them up at night.
Myself, I'm *already* like a ghost, so... I'm only one step away now.

We visited countless doctors, they would prescribe sleeping medications for her, and when she was off meds, it came back even worse. The sleeping problems just got worse, she couldn't even attend school. When she was 6, i gave her melatonin gummies for kids. I swear it took her just 30 minutes to sleep, it used to take her 2-3 hour just to fall asleep. She is now healthier, happier, and no dark circles around her eyes. She can finally make friends and attend school. And i finally get to sleep normally after all these years. I mean her sleeping problems also took a toll on me. I was sleep deprived because i had to stay up with her 😂 and then i had to wake up earlier.

I've been on 5mg of melatonin for a couple of months now. My Garmin watch actually recorded the difference in my sleep patterns while on it as compared to off it. Before melatonin I was always able to fall asleep pretty quick but my trouble would be staying asleep...often waking up after only an hour or so wide awake then feeling really tired as I should be getting up. Taking melatonin not only helps me get a better deeper night sleep but also keeps me asleep throughout the entire night getting a solid 6-7hrs of good quality sleep compared to 2-3 without it. I've noticed no side effects apart from more vivid dreams and occasionally a bit groggy in the mornings which soon subsides once up and about. I can honestly say this is a real life saver for those who can't stay asleep during the night. I take mine with some water as I get I to bed and read for about 20-30mins and then it's lights out and Zzzzzzz for the whole night and sweet dreamzzzzz

Melatonin has been a very researched substance, and I cannot argue with the facts you bring up. You mentioned how taking melatonin before bed only increases the quality of sleep, what you called sleep efficiency, by 2.2%. I wonder how felt this difference is, if it is even noticeable. Another thing that is significant to me is how it affects the time it takes to fall asleep. 3-9 minutes may not seem drastic, but personally that easily can make the differences between falling asleep right away or getting distracted and waking up again. I’ve never had problems falling asleep once I’m tired, but in the time I’ve taken melatonin I’ve noticed taking it about an hour before I plan on falling asleep does help me feel more tired and ready for sleep. I have no argument against the idea of a placebo but, even if it were a placebo it’s not causing any problems I know of. I’ve also personally noticed melatonin’s effect on quality of sleep and among this frequency of dreams. When I take melatonin I fall I sleep faster, get better sleep, and dream more.

What's fascinating is that tart cherries naturally contain melatonin, and incorporating them into my routine has had a noticeable impact on my sleep. 🍒 I love that it's a natural source.
For those who, like me, are always on the lookout for more holistic approaches, tart cherry extract is worth considering. Plus, it's not just about melatonin - the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties in tart cherries make it a double win for overall well-being! It allows me to fall asleep much easier under those conditions. Without it I'd just lay in bed wide awake for hours. I use it for 1 day per hour of jet lag then after that stop using it because my body clock is properly set.

Just bought some from Walmart on a whim. I find myself needing more sleep and having a harder time sleeping at nighttime hours. I took it in the past several times (3gummies) and I swear that stuff had me yawning nonstop 15mins later. It’s true, people react differently to melatonin but I’ve lucked out with it’s success in the past. Hoping it helps as it did a few years ago.

Now, I have not taken melatonin, but am looking at such videos because I bought some.
I already do all the last things listed. I go to bed roughly the same hour everyday, exercise daily, don't use anything with blue light in the evening, and nothing helps.
As of writing right now, I had not even a second of sleep, despite doing all the above.
I tried Zonoct, and it does work, but I really do not want to be dependent on sleep medication, so I thought melatonin might make it easier for me to fall asleep - perhaps even at a small dose? I don't know yet.

I normally don’t need melatonin as I can sleep quite easily, but there are certain odd days where you just can’t sleep I guess maybe the brain is too active. I do buy a bottle of melatonin gummies for those situations. It helped me especially recently when I got a cold and my nose was absolutely stuffed up I couldn’t sleep at all. I popped two in which helped me a lot. I do take them sparingly so that it’s more effective when I actually need them.

  • @connieespinosa3745

Oh it works. This video can scientifically explain it away but melatonin works. It started about 3 years ago I couldn't fall asleep until 3, then 4, then 5 it became worse and worse. My husband bought me melatonin and finally it put me to sleep. I'm getting a full night of sleep and do not feel groggy in the morning. Articles say oh the side effects are this and that, well what's worse than getting no sleep? What's even cooler is that it's regulating the time that I go to sleep and I am not waking up in the middle of the night. The only downside is that you dream long dreams and very detailed which I dislike but I can deal with it. They are peaceful dreams and not ugly.

when you take the extra supplements your brain doesnt need to produce its own natural melatonin so now i dont know what to do because i cant fall asleep naturally
also melatonin makes me fall asleep fast but only gets me through a couple hours and then i wake up consistently through out the night so if you are considering starting to use melatonin please think about it first

A Harvard study concluded that very low doses of melatonin were effective in helping people to get to sleep. The levels were somewhere around 1/10 of 1 mg, yet I commonly see 5 and 10 mg tablets. Personally I buy 3mg tablets and divide it into quarters. Seems to help me get to sleep but does little to sustain my sleep.

Yeah they over size melatonin tablet s in many places.
      Which is concerning,
It only takes around 5-25 mg for someone to overdose on melatonin, depending on many factors.
(Which isn't like life threatening or anything, just vivid hallucinatory dreams that are impossible to discern from reality, until you wake up. Which also isn't really that bad unless you're dreaming of something that might make you panic.)

I've had to use melatonin for decades now--there's been no other choice, and nothing else (natural) helped nor worked. I stayed AWAY from 'pharmaceutical cocktails' like Ambien and ALL chemical drugs, period. Would never use these.
My sleep has been poor since childhood--I doubt that I get legitimate REM sleep very often, if at all.
Pretty certain this has easily shaved about 20-30 years off of my life, and... it's beginning to truly show. 😓 In the last 6-8 years, I feel like I've aged 20. The desire for death (or, at least, escaping the anguish of physical, psychological and emotional suffering) has become worse, more and more frequent... even though I have a LOT I'd like to accomplish.
It is what it is, but... I predict that I'll never make it to 70 nor 80 years old. 90 is DEFINITELY out of the question. No possibility.
I used to be an athlete, had TONS of energy, and I smiled far more often than I was upset or downtrodden. Life beat me down over the decades, though. It is what it is.
