      This matchup would be comical at best. Wolverine does not possess heightened superhuman strength; he is perhaps only two or at best three times stronger than a power lifter according to his comic book feats, with enhanced agility as an additional trait. In other words, while a world-class power lifter may be able to deadlift 1000 pounds, he cannot slam dunk a basketball.
      Logan, on the other hand, could likely deadlift 2000 lbs (certainly not the movie version, that's for sure), but could also jump up and stand on top of a basketball net.
      Considering this, people seem to forget that adamantium is literally described as "nearly indestructible," which is a far cry from being completely indestructible.
      Wolverine would still need considerable force to cut through solid steel, and in the realm of comic books, we often overlook the laws of physics with many abilities, so accuracy might be questionable at this point. However, it would also depend on the sharpness of his claws. Regardless, if they were sharpened down to a few nanometers, they would not be able to pierce Superman's skin, which is considerably stronger and harder than adamantium.

      Well I once fought against a Hydra, it was horrible, worst part was it was made up of Nokia 3310, Nokia 3320, Nokia 3410 and Nokia 3420. It lunged one of it's heads towards me, making a loud ringing noise as it roared towards me, E¹-D¹-E-F#-C#¹-B-D-E-B-A-C#-E-A. It was terrifying. My trustworthy steed died, with one swipe the Nokia Hydra made my iHorse's battery die. The only weakness of that Hydra was that each time I cut off one of it's head, 2 new heads sprouted out from the neck, but thankfully the weak point is that each time the new heads were of newer and newer models. After a while it's battery died out, and I barely survived, my iBlade was heavily damaged. and my iKnight armor was in shambles and I lost both legs and an arm, 4 teeth, and got 6 broken ribs and a broken collar bone.

    theoretically,wolverine could cut through Superman's skin. The problem is that his claws would never actually reach his skin. Superman has an invulnerable aura around his body that is unbreakable against anything that isn't kryptonian so the claws would skid off without doing any damage

      That's easy. It stops moving, or the the thing it hit starts moving. The same thing happens if you hit a relatively sturdy object with another relatively sturdy object. If one can't break through the other, then the moving objects stops moving, or the stationary object starts moving.

    For those arguing that I didn't take into account Superman's skin strength and force field:
    1. Force fields aren't a thing, so I didn't want to just make a ton of assumptions.
    2. Nanoblades have been shown to cut powerful versions of Superman: i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/kc-137.jpg Even though Wolverine's claws aren't "magical," I think the claws being able to cut Supes is a good compromise between the science and the comics based on panels like these and what I said in the video! -- KH

      There are only 3 constants that come into play when it comes to damaging Superman:
      1: Kryptonite
      2: Magic
      3: Other 'super' beings
      Since Wolverine is none of those things, I still can't see Wolverine hurting Superman, especially since we're ignoring Superman's speed in this scenario, in which case, Wolverine would never be able to land a hit in the first place.

      Nerdist sure force fields as we know them in fiction aren't a thing but they are an extension of the concept of magnetic fields are they not? Magnetic fields exist and can apply a force. The earth, the magnet on your fridge, fields being used to steer protons in colliders.
      Some scifi writes force fields as just high energy oscillating fields that resist energy weapons and physical weapons. Stargate for instance. Usually the downside of these fields is the required energy to maintain resistance to a threat or finding the fields oscillation frequency and penetrating that by slipping through the periods where the field is not present.
      Doesn't Superman have a bioelectric field now? I'm not well versed in comics but I remember seeing that one DC animated movie where they talk about his bioelectric field and powers stemming from it. If they wrote it in such a way could wolverine penetrate that field? I'm assuming they'd have to write that superman can make his field generate that much force to resist that sort of pressure from wolverine?
      His bioelectric field protected him from solar winds or something in the movie would that not lend credence to it being able to stop wolverines claws?

    • @JimGiant
      @JimGiant 7 лет назад +6

      The magic nanoblade here is orders of magnitudes sharper than obsidian and superman did that to himself, he could have been applying a trillion times more force than wolverine could attack with for all we know.

    • @livedandletdie
      @livedandletdie 7 лет назад +8

      There are no such thing as force fields. There are field propagation of the four fundamental forces, nothing more nothing less. Electrical currents such as magnetic fields can't do shit against physical objects moving unless the atoms of that object are 10% or more aligned in the same direction.
      And if the magnetic field was so strong that it didn't allow metals to pass through it and repulsed everything, then anything in that field living or dead would have each and every atom forcefully aligned in the same direction, instantly turning anything into plasma. Just due to the amount of energy needed.

And the only things that have ever resisted his claws cutting force in the comics has been Cap's shield (also adamantium) and Mjolnir (made of an asguardian/dwarven metal similar to adamantium and enchanted by Odin, who scientifically speaking would be considered a reality warper)

    But that's not how superman's durability works... his durability isn't a function of material toughness but of a protective forcefield around his body powered by the solar energy he absorbed... so Wolverine could not generate the force needed to get through Superman's energy shield to get to his skin... • @robertcorinhoward4417
      @robertcorinhoward4417 5 лет назад +6

      Probably not, as Nightcrawler can't usually willingly teleport himself into something solid; the molecules of his body become entangled with whatever he intersects with (which is strange, considering that his powers work by shunting him through a wormhole and he displaces air fine.) Kitty Pryde, on the other hand, almost certainly could phase a pipe through his skull and leave it there, if she could get him to sit still long enough. But as long as his super speed is still a factor I'd wager that even if she got the pipe in, Supes could probably get away faster than she could let go to unphase it. Reacting faster than most humans can think is a perk.

    Great video. 2 things. 1) You say that given ''enough pressure '' wolverine's claws can cut through anything, but Wolverine only has so much pressure he can apply. He isn't super strong. 2) An idea for another video: If we were to take someone with an increased healing factor and cut them up they would grow back to normal given enough time (although not much time would be needed depending on the individual). What would happen though, if we were to cut them up, or maybe just take a he part of their body away and restrict their space (i.e. putting them in concrete or a very small confined space)? Without sufficient space what would happen? Which would win out, the concrete or Wolverine's healing factor?

      technically, it is said in several occrence of superman that he have a thin force field around himself (explaning why his costume is so resillient). I don't know if it is boelectric, but that would explain why his costume is torn apart in hand fight sometimes. But let's get to the idea that it is bioelectric (Supereel powaaaaa)
      We've seen that Wolverine adamantium is subjet to electromagetism (Magneto in da place, bitch!), so his claws wouldnt even make it to the body of Kal-el in the first place, Logan not being strong enough to force through the fiel by pure strengh.

      Kal El that's only the newer versions of superman. At his peak power in the '60's he had no aura, he was impervious to any attack, and could dive through the heart of suns (albeit not red giants) His clothes were indestructible because they changed like he did when he came to Earth. Somehow. And it doesn't matter if Wolverine can cut through him or not, Logan's strength and speed are far inferior and he couldn't even get close to Superman to try.

In the Digimon franchise, a being called WarGreymon has an attack called "Terra Force" and what its descriptions said was "Takes all of the energy within the atmosphere and concentrates it into one spot, then fires it as an extremely dense, high-temperature energy shot."
    How much energy would that require to make the Terra Force attack?

    A few questions:
    1. Would the cities from the Bioshock series, Rapture and New Columbia, be possible to build?
    2. What would be required to make them work?
    3. Is the concept of plasmids and vigor from the series something that could potentially be a real thing to any degree?

    For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The crown applies a counter-force against Logan's claws from the center of the diadem out towards the point of entry, but this is oblique to Logan's actual trajectory, which results in a shift in the direction of his velocity. This process is continuous over time such that it results in a centripetal deceleration.

    A materials strength is based on how much energy it takes to break the bonds between the atoms (or, more usually in metals, the grain structure of the metal, which breaks first). So if the blade is thin enough that it doesn't matter how strong those bonds are, then it isn't breaking them, just passing through them, therefore not cutting.

    And Kyle, if you do actually do this, don't say Jimmy's IQ is 210, because the person who said that was Beautiful Gorgeous and she, at the time, knew absolutely nothing about Jimmy except for what he had told her, and it's never been explicitly stated. Jimmy himself did say his IQ was "literally off the charts" and he has a machine that measures IQ in 3 digits, so his IQ has to be at least 1,000 if that's the chart he meant. BUT PLEASE DO IT.

      See the thing is that IQ's over ~170 aren't possible unless you are adjusting the score for age. So he gets a super high score, but it's on a child scale and if he were taking a adult test he wouldn't get higher than 170.
      The thing is you really can't get that high on a IQ test, at best you can get every question right, which only gets you up to ~170.
      The point I want to stress, is that the IQ scale just doesn't work for individuals too much smarter than the range of normal human intelligence.

    • @CatholicismRules
      @CatholicismRules 7 лет назад +1

      Valcor Wabajak I've already taken that into account, but the thing about an IQ test is this:
      People take it and the highest they can get is a 170.
      What about the people who made the formulas? Let's say there was one person in the world who had invented every single formula and every language, grammar rule, etc. Would he still be at 170, making him just as smart as the people who learned the things he invented/discovered or would he be smarter? Plus it's a TV show where they tried to rationalize breathing in space, so anything can happen, and very easily with IQs. The IQ test itself may not list you higher than another individual, but that doesn't mean you aren't any smarter. There really is no "limit" to IQs, especially in Jimmy Neutron where Sheen's estimated top IQ in one episode was literally infinity.

    • @vakusdrake3224
      @vakusdrake3224 7 лет назад +2

      Sensei Jack My point is just that the IQ test isn't really useful for measuring superhuman levels of intellect.
      Even abstracting it; the IQ test works off percentiles, however if you are the smartest human alive, no IQ test could measure extra intelligence beyond that.
      The IQ test is fundamentally a comparative metric, not a measure of absolute intelligence.
      People using IQ in scenarios where you are dealing with entities smarter than any human, really irks me because _that's not how it works_.

    • @CatholicismRules
      @CatholicismRules 7 лет назад +1

      Valcor Wabajak Oh I see what you mean, I misunderstood what your point was, but (I could be misunderstanding again) Jimmy made a machine that measured his IQ above 170, and for the sake of argument I'm going to assume it works, because he's made much more ridiculous things.

      @wishbone346 7 лет назад +4

      StupifiedRex There's a difference there. I mean that difference makes no god damn sense because a black hole should just tear literally any matter apart, but a blade that cuts a molecular level is causing damage far different than a black hole would. You can't compare the two. It's like how some material can withstand a nuclear explosion but can still be cut by other more conventional means.

    • @samuelcurtis7470

      wishbone346 I do have to agree. although theoretically if we could create something denser than a black hole. such as superman's skin. then nothing could cut down to that molecular level. because as we know it, black holes are the densest thing known to man. and the strongest theoretical metal is amazonium. worn by diana. aka wonder women. so I would have to say that as long as there is a sun. there is a superman. so wolverines claws would prove to be nothing to the son of krypton

    Hi Kyle. These sections are always educational and I like this one. There is a nerdy thing that sort of stands in the way of your analysis from a fictional perspective though.
    Superman's toughness is not a physical property of his skin or flesh. A lot of Superman's powers are explained by the idea that he generates a powerful bio-kinetic field in most situations. This explains how Kryptonians can carry and even catch falling objects much larger than himselves without them falling apart, their flight and biologically impossible speed and strength and their vulnerability to red sunlight and kryptonite. If Kryptonian skin were simply dense and tough, they could never be made instantly vulnerable by those kinds of radiation, not without their skin literally melting off. Kryptonians project a biological force field under yellow sunlight, and hurting them requires some means to disrupt that field or deplete it somehow. I'm not sure how this is consistent with Superman simply getting overpowered by physical force, but I think Superman is literally invulnerable to conventional edged weapons under most circumstances. So unless Wolverine's claws have a specific interaction with psychokinetic fields I'm not aware of, they wouldn't hurt Supes.

    I'm convinced, but would still like to know more. How deeply would Wolverine's claws be able to cut into Superman's body.
    I've sometimes used razor blades in sculpting clay. The blade will easily cut through the clay, but the deeper it goes, the more pressure I have to exert. I suspect this is because of the friction the clay causes on the sides of the blade, which builds up surprisingly fast.
    So, assuming Wolverine's claws will cut Superman, do they make kitten scratches? Do they make shallow cuts? Deep cuts? Lop of limbs?

  • @geniegogo
    @geniegogo 5 лет назад

    regarding spinning around the crown of the statue (is that a thorny crown?) if Wolverine can have individual control of each blade for example if he flexes muscles inside his hands such that he can slightly angle the claws sideways to create more friction the he could feasible "grab" hold of what he is cutting or slow it down enough so that he can swing over before completing the cut. There is such a thing called "edge alignment" when test cutting with a sword that if your form is poor then you will have a harder time or be unable to cut through your material for example wet tatami with green bamboo in the center. Or ... when you make chips with a hatchet do you not chop and when the edge bites the wood then twist to flake away material? This is using a cutting tool beyond just cutting.

    • @geniegogo
      @geniegogo 5 лет назад

      the true test is to ask Wolverine to jump up and impale the ceiling with his claw and then hang with one arm ... Bub. Then ask how're you hangin'? He will say "I'm gripping the ceiling with my claws Bub" ... then to show off Wolverine pulls himself up with said arm then without declawing he pulls his claw out and instantly jam it back up to impale the ceiling again, then he stabs the ceiling again in quick succession punching holes in the ceiling without falling down then finally end up hanging again with just his claws vertically embedded casually looking at you, Bub. (The only telltale sign is that his arm muscles are taut from gripping with the sides of his claws to hold up his own weight). Then he relaxes and falls gently down from the ceiling. ... OR ... take your own sword, an XVa type for example and impale a watermelon with it then pretend you can't pull it out by twisting the blade as you pull thus causing drag against the weight of the melon ... but when you relax and pull straight the blade comes out easily (and now you have to clean up after). Thank you .(Snikt)

    6:00 Starfleet as well as other technically advanced space-fairing cultures couldn't always send messages instantly though. Various episodes and movies talked about it taking time for messages to be sent (when the plot called for it to force the characters to make their own judgement calls or when they can't call for help fast enough). The established explanation for this is that their territories contain vast networks of communication satellites that relay communication data through subspace from the source through the necessary number of satellites until it reaches the destination.

    They may be able to cut through anything with the force he can generate but the cut would only be as deep as the depth of the edge of the blade on his claws. Each claw is many, many times wider then their edges, I'd guess somewhere around half an inch thick. So even with the edges being sharp enough to push through the molecules of steel, there's no way your forcing the material to spread open to thickness of the claw body without a ridiculous amount of force, far more than Wolverine could possibly generate.

      Wolverines ability to cut Superman has nothing to do with the materials it's made from, it's completely because of his claws's sharpness. Considering how Captain American has hit many things and people with his shield and haven't sliced all of them in half I highly doubt it has any sort of sharp blade, not to mention that sharp.

  • @SKy_the_Thunder
    @SKy_the_Thunder 7 лет назад

    One thing though: For a cutting weapon the edge geometry is even more important than the sharpness. Sure, the actual edge of a blade would penetrate something if sharp enough - but that doesn't do you any good if it can't go deeper than a few micrometers before the thicker part of the blade gets stuck between both sides of the cut. As thick as Wolverine's claws are portrayed it's doubtful that he'd be able to cut steel even if we assume maximum sharpness. He simply wouldn't have enough force to bend the metal away from the actual cut to make space for the rest of the claw.
    You can make a splitting axe razor sharp but it would still be worse at cutting vegetables than a dull kitchen knife.

    • @Gab8riel
      @Gab8riel 7 лет назад

      Lo Wai Ip
      Exactly, the hardest things are often the most fragile. If you throw a diamond (the hardest natural material known to humans) at the ground, it will break into a million pieces.
      Hard materials are very weak to impact, they are only good when you need something that can't be cut, scratched or easily deformed.

    • @jackywaiiplo2476
      @jackywaiiplo2476 7 лет назад

      This is with the assumption of you are hitting the scatter point, some ending of its molecular structure. Otherwise, it is very difficult to break a diamond. On the top of that, some of the material that are among the hardest are metals. They have relatively strong tensile strength allowing some degree of deformation. Tough, I just found out that obsidian actually is as hard or possibly harder than glasses as they hold the blade better, which mean it is not that fragile as I am thinking of.

  • @whiskeybeerbeer
    @whiskeybeerbeer 7 лет назад

    @Nerdist Wolverine could Start a cut along lady liberty, and then twist his arms to gain friction from the side of his blades, since what he is cutting has fairly high tensile strength it would cease to cut. Hopefully he gains enough so that he can adjust his cut and hold technique to get all the way around. Not sure is i am explaining myself correctly, but I am sure you get the idea.

  • @dongeonmaster8547

    Thanks for doing this episode. I have argued for and against but mostly against this notion of Wolverine's claws cutting through "anything" I argued with less facts or pizazz but with the same basic theory that if they were sharp enough and strong enough, like you described here, than Wolverine should definitely be able to cut through "most" things. Where I started having issues with it is against nigh indestructible or so-called invulnerable characters like Supes or more commonly the Hulk , the Thing and other Marvel heavy weights. Like Wolverine’s claws they are by comic book definition, unbreakable. I know some materials are resistant to blunt force trauma and other do well against piercing or cutting damage but these invulnerable characters are supposed to be impervious or near impervious to all forms of physical damage. This video seems to say that anyone with a little strength and a really sharp object can cut Superman and by proxy any equal or lesser physically robust character. Isn't it also demonstrated in the comics that these characters can't be pierced even with needles or cut with scalpels to undergo medical procedures? Many of these objects also being exceedingly sharp.

    One thing nobody thought about, When project Cadimus creater superboy (pre new 52/rebirth) they determined that though they could not clone Kryptonian DNA, Due to Supermans body being protected by a shield of some sort. Even Dead (or so it seemed) they're sharpest needles could not even touch him. it was determined by this that he had some sort of shielding as opposed to simply tough skin. this was how they figured out how to make superboy bulletproof, but manipulating his human DNA to use a similar force field. While i do think Supes has tough skin, i also believe there is some sort of force field, to further protect him. it's also how i think he fly's as well.
