I planted a James Galway in my perennial border a couple of years ago. I didn't know it was a climber. Thanks for the pruning lesson. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! Bonny

🤣 That's so funny - I have terrible vertigo since having our kids and I was very dizzy. Not sure how often I'll attempt it with something sharp in my hand!

Fabulous roses Annette. I love James Galway too. Sadly mine died and I now have a gap on my trellis. Obviously i can't plant another rose so am going to invest in some group 3 Clematis. I like Prince Charles and am not sure what else I am going to choose yet. Rhank you fo another fab Vlogmas 😃x

Thanks Be. What a shame about your James Galway though. Do you know what killed it? Roses grow so well here in my clay soil - rubbish for some plants but brilliant for roses 😁

@@cottoverdi I can't work out why roses die here. I too have clay soil and they should thrive, but eventually they die. I have lost Buff beauty, Pink Perpetue, James Galway and New Dawn form my central trellis. Roses seem to have done ok along m fence line though. All were planted 10 years ago when we laid out the garden. Maybe there is something in the soil- the previous owner was a car enthusiast and kept lots of car bits in the garden and in various sheds. Other than that maybe when his wife dies and he didn't do the garden( his wife was the gardener) he tipped weedkiller over it to make the garden less overgrown for selling? I have also lost peonies from this bed. We nver know what we inherit when we take over an old garden. I no grow any new rioises in pots and am making a new large raised bed for my planned new rose garden. x

What a nightmare! It breaks my heart when I lose a treasured plant. I may have killed my Koko Loki rose this year by planting dahlias too close to it - I have my fingers crossed that it''' bounce back but it may not...

I've got a better understanding about pruning roses having watched all of your videos. Annette, I don't suppose you know why we reduce our shrub roses to stop them rocking in the wind and then prune again in Spring? I've always wondered why we don't do just one hard prune.

Hi Wendy, thank you for your lovely comments - glad the videos are useful. Good question about the rose pruning.
I believe we only prune the shrub roses now if they are tall and leggy so that they don't rock in the wind and break. The roses I pruned in this video already had broken stems from the storm over the last day or 2 and so I felt I had to take those off to prevent disease. My understanding is that any pruning of roses will probably initiate new growth (because they are super hardy) but the young, tender, new growth would get damaged in the hard frosts so it's best not to prune hard before those hard frosts end. I only prune shrub roses now if they are too leggy to withstand winds. This includes having too many leaves still on the plant. I think some people de-foliate their roses but I never have.
I've tried to explain this better in the video today (Vlogmas 23). 🌹😁
