I'm Annette and I'm lucky enough to have a walled garden in the beautiful Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, UK. I love to grow plants from seeds, cuttings, bare roots and more. My channel is a detailed look at everything that we're doing in the garden, with specific details about the plants we have and how to care for them.
I hope to inspire you to confidently care for your garden plants throughout the seasons and will share tips for growing for stunning flower arrangements so that you can bring your garden indoors too.
I love flowers - the fluffier, the better! I grow a huge variety of tulips, roses and dahlias each season, and grow hundreds of annuals from seed each year.
Follow along for inspiration and in-depth instructions so that you can join in too.

Creating A Stunning Tulip Display In Containers // Cottoverdi
Planting tulips in containers for our patio garden is a priority for me every year because we relish the display in the spring. The anticipation during the colder months is rewarded with splashes of vibrant colour come spring.

Thank you for explaining how to cut the flowers in a way that the stem size is big enough to hold up the next flower. All the best for 2025 to you and your family!
You are very welcome. Happy New Year to you too
Why do you need to fill the box with woodshavings? My (only) dahlia is in a little box, filled with nothing. The buld is doing well. I'm missing something here.
Hi there, the wood shavings act as insulation against the frost and freezing temperatures. We need this here where we live because the temperature can drop below 0°C and this would damage the tubers beyond repair - they would rot and become squishy and they cannot recover from this damage.
Very helpful video. Just planning for next year! Did the Penstemon Twizzle Coral turn out as you’d hoped?
Yes it did - it was better than I hoped and I had so many blooms - I'm planning to grow many more this year. You can see how it was in this video ruclips.net/video/C-0jllW0QVQ/видео.htmlsi=cEG88RvJXKbgA-18
Just discovered your channel, and really enjoyed this very informative video. I'm having my first go at growing dahlias...here in hot Western Australia...in last week's heat wave I moved the pots to a spot under shade cloth. Can you tell me why you don't just plant your smallish pots (after you see shoots) directly into the ground? Would it impede the growth? Wish me luck, Tracey
I just bought 2 hudge bulbs from costco now! 5f only, they are in wax, wax is not big problem tu removing but underneath is balloon! Straight away i remove that but was already a bit moulded. If you like to putting this later for next years to this Straight away ❤
Annette and Richard, Have a wonderful Christmas Day and all the very best to you both for the New Year. Xxx Merry Christmas to you both xxx
The Canadian Columbine is totally familiar! We used to pick them by the side of the road and bit the holes out of the bulbs on their spurs. 😊. A happy memory. I am off to put more seeds on top of the soil and see if I can put the seeds outside so they can have their cool period. 😌. Practice and research hopefully leads to progress! 🤞
I have just planted sweet William yesterday, December 22nd! This video is most helpful for what I will need to do if they sprout. I am told I can plant them out six to eight weeks prior to my last frost date and they will bloom next summer. 🤞
Absolutely love your channel, so inspirational 😊
The bigger the plant for prick out the better..
Your joy is infectious ❤️❤️❤️😊
Love your beautiful garden thanks for sharing 🌸🌼🌻🪴🙏🙏🙏
Wow! you have a beautiful garden my dear friend! I admire the beauty of your flowers in your garden.
This is the best video on Dahlias I have watched thus far. Exactly when do you remove them out of the ground? When they have fully died off? And when does that occur? Autumn or Winter? What do you mean by last frost date? How do you know when there will be a frost? Is it the last month of say winter? You didn't explain why you place them upside down in storage. Another video said something about curing them before storage. What does that entail? Your tubes look like they have been washed clean. Were they washed? Someone in another video stated that they stored theirs in the garage and they died. The response was your garage was too hot and they dried out. What is the appropriate temperature for them in a garage? What month did you pot the tubers? You said splitting the tubers rejuvenates them. Does that mean that if you don't, they will form a large clump and die sooner? Will splitting the tubers increase their lifespan? I reside in Melbourne Australia and have been informed that I could leave them in the ground. Would the dangling tubers and rotted ones damage the better tubers when they are left in the ground, since you didn't dig them out and separate them? Why is snails and slugs such a problem? Don't pellets that kill them save the plants? Can you elaborate on what a copper ring is? Thanks.
@@altinsilsile36 It’s late now to be passing this on, but the last frost date is issued by most state agricultural agencies every year and is the same, almost, every year. You can Google it for your info I’m sure.
I thought Wine Eyed Jill would be rosier, and not thàt yellow. Too bad I ordered one.
I didn't deadhead my cosmos, I collected ALL seeds and I now have several (little) bags full of seeds. So I'm looking forward to a jungle of cosmos next summer 😉
Loved everything you did.
I saw your other video on lifting and storing tulip bulbs. Apologies if I missed it in one of your videos, but would you mind sharing roughly what percentage of your tulip bulbs re-flower with this method? In the past I've had about a third rebloom if left in the pots, so had taken to treating them like annuals but now realise that I could have been lifting them!
I'm going to order some bulbs. I have some in my garden already, like for the last 15 years (!), and I wasn't aware they aren't that frost hardy. I'm going to order cream, white and soft yellow, they'll combine nice with my dahlias.
I'd just sworn off dahlias after a year of endlessly battling the slugs and the flopping and poor dahlia planning, and then I found your channel and I'm not sure my resolve will last!
I can not wait for tulips..so nice to see them in ur video
thank you!!
thank you for sharing, fantastic overview, you've got me excited!!
Hi Annette. How are you? Your tulips look gorgeous. I still have roses on my climbing rosebush (single petalled ones) and other kinds. We have a lot of sunshine especially around 12am. It almost feels as if spring is coming. So I take my mat and drive to the beach next village, put my mat on the shingle and lie down but dressed in a jacket. My pansies and alissums smell like honey and of course we have the tangerine tree full of fruit but also the orange and lemon tree which are near my garden.
Hi Annette! 👋🏼 New subscriber here. Thanks for the great instructional video & for including the measurements on your pots…that was very helpful! 😊 I have about 90 tulip🌷bulbs which I need to plant up in 3 large containers and thanks to your video I now have a plan. Can’t wait for Spring and looking forward to seeing your beautiful tulip show! Have a lovely weekend! 😉
Would you mind sharing the name of the plant with lime green flowers at the front of the border visible at 12:36 please?
Hello there, great video with full information, thanks. I just love Dahlias, is ok to bring them inside in pots in witer, do we have keep them dry or little water to moist them pls.thanks
The rush I get when I realize one of the flowers I'm admiring in the video is a variety I bought for next year 😍
Beautiful roses! Your James Galway has a much deeper pink than mine. But I grow it in a much colder climate (Canada, 4a). I am trying to figure out what factors affect the colors of the roses. Do you have clay soil?
Hi Annette that’s for another great video just a quick question what do you do with your tulips after flowering 🥰
Beautiful tulips Annette. I use mesh pieces over the holes in my pots to stop the compost falling through- I ran out of crocks ages ago.I have just finished prepping my begonias and dahlias for storage\. So relieved that job is done. I have been planting garlic and onion bulbs on the allotment yesterday. The storm brought down my bean arches, sadly. My hubster says he will repair them so they will be ready for the next growing season. I have about 20 pots of various bulbs on my decking. So worried about the voles, mice and squirrels. I have covered the pots with large pots and bell cloches until they come through, then I will remove them and hope the mice won't attack them then. Last year I lost all my bulbs, bar the narcissi to the little critters! So upsetting when you spend so much money and time on them! I have ornate wrought iron pot stands under my pots. They tuck underneath. I use them for my tender salvias in the summer and the bulbs in the winter. Happy gardening 🙂 x
@bewoodford2807 You should live in Greece where little stones or any size are everywhere. You can pick them and have them for free.
Annette thank you great video
Good morning Annette, the tutorial was well done, you have done all the necessary steps to ensure a glorious display of your much loved tulips. I so enjoy to see people recycling items year after year with the planting procedures. It encourages new gardeners and reminds us to use what we have in storage already. Hope the high winds will not be devastating, we are still trusting for good rains in our area, a cyclonic development on our eastern side near Madagascar which could bring rains for us. It is very stressful presently, cannot use municipal water they will explode so we save what we can as we always do. Happy planting, will watch for your next adventure. Enjoy a wonderful day, keep snug. Kind regards.
Great video, thank you for the tips.
Always love watching your videos and learn so much! Can’t wait to see your tulip display next spring 😊
Melissa Anna Marijke: for the 'Marijke' pronunciation: Mah: Like "ma" in "mama." rijk: pronounced like "rike" (rhymes with "like"). e: A soft 'uh,' similar to the 'a' in "sofa." So: Mah-rike-uh

thanks Annette have a great week, kind regards Joke.
Spring is going to be glorious 🌷💐🌷
I'm in love with those Dahlias!!! 💕 🥰🥰🥰💕
Lovely. I hope your Mum is doing well. Do you ever cook with garden herbs that you could share some recipes?
Great video thank you I now know all about Dalias!
I collected loads od seeds from my cosmos. What do you think is the difference with single leaf dahlias?
Cheered up my morning! Thank you so much for your videos!❤
It's beautiful, I would like to try a group in my backyard. Thanks for the idea.
Such an unbelievable warmth. The temperature is 17C and it's very wet. It feels as if May is coming. Today December 6th is St Nicholas' nsmeday, a big one. Nicky,Nicholas, Nick are celebrating.
Good morning Annette, your display on the table is absolutely stunning. In the large container many green plants but all different shades of green. Nature is marvellous hey? The one particular pot with the cedar is so beautiful, I love those designs on the outside. You know what, get some outside fairy lights, as they are battery operated, just cover the little box in a small plastic packet and drape the lights, like weaving through your plants and you can hide the switch box and you can come and switch them on for a time at night. Then you can really fall in love with your hard work. Making that display was not easy, alas, it turned out smashing. It is a joy to watch your enthusiasm. Do take care, keep snug. Much love and blessings to you.
That is a lovely planter. My balcony is looking bare and bedraggled, so I need to get moving on it. You have got me thinking I could do something smaller, but similar. We had our Christmas Party at work. There is a group which put on a raffle of various baskets to raise money for the Food Bank. I won the garden basket, so I have just potted up yet one more amaryllis! I am going to have to make more space for my indoor plants as the Amaryllis are going to be taking up a lot of real estate before spring when I can put them outdoors. There is also a peony corm which I will plant on Saturday and pray for it as I suspect it wanted to be planted earlier. Thank you for the inspiration. I need to remember that I will have to pot up what I plant in the spring, so I will need to have a list before I go shopping so I don’t buy too much. 😊
So Nice Video
