I always prune roses hard. I pruned my elderly neighbour’s roses last year too (at her request), she was horrified and told her son I’d probably killed them; they’d never flowered so well as they did last year 😂

I know that I'll be watching this video a lot over the next few years. I just ordered my first climbing rose, a David Austin Strawberry Hill, that I am planting in memory of my mother who passed away earlier this month. She loved roses. I know I'll be nervous the first time I prune it, but Laura's instructions will guide me through. 😊 Sending much love to the GA family from Illinois zone 5b.

Spring 2022 was our first in our first house, and I watched your videos all winter, Laura! It perhaps had me coming up with too many ideas so the growing season last year was a little intense for this first-timer. When the dormant period began the last thing I wanted to do was think about my garden for months! But with February thaws I’m back on my gardening kick and this was the perfect video to return to as I hope to tackle our inherited climbing rose after learning from you.

pruning roses is one of the most satisfying jobs, isn't it? "cleaning the clutter" my hubby likes to say... this is a great video! i like to hard prune mine, too, esp since we deal with rust and blackspot and aphids (ugh) but oh so worth it when they bloom and scent the air... i love those colettes but have nowhere to grow them.. i have a community slope behind my house and i've often said i want to just "accidentally" plant a few vining things on the slope.. haha.. i'm thinking if i share vining veggies with the crew that tends to it, it might be ok!! not sure how'd they feel about thorny roses, but it sure is tempting!! it looked cold out there! how do you work in the cold? i'm such a wimp! 🥰❤thanks for the video!! 🥰❤

Good morning from Northern Michigan. We have lots of snow here. My big garden project this year is to put in a rose arbor despite everyone warning me the deer will just eat them. I spent weeks pouring over roses trying to decide what to do. I was so tempted to go with Collette as that is one gorgeous rose. But I hear it is also very thorny. I decided to try the arborose series. Honeymoon and Tangerine Skies.

I wanted to take a moment and say thank you. I have been watching your videos for sometime now. I have enjoyed them very much. I have spend the biggest part of my gardening life not ever being able to grow roses. My mother in law gave me a climbing rose prior to her passing more than 13 years ago. So I got the rose just before she passed. It would only have 2 cane and only would get around a couple feet and then the canes would die and the next year new canes would grow and the same thing. I dug it put and transplanted it in another spot. A new trellis. And I spent some time following your rose trimming videos. I am happy to say I now have multiple canes, with a ton of growth. I now cut red roses and have them on the kitchen table almost daily. The ones I leave are currently growing up the entire back side of my shed shed. I can not even begin to tell you how excited I am to have gotten it through all those years limping and this year boom shaka laka! Roses everywhere. I feel like a true Gardner now. I have since bought 4 of the at last roses and they are just loving life now that I am more mindful of how to care for them. Again I can’t thank you and your team enough. You all are really an inspiration to me and I am sure many other daily. Take care. Happy gardening. And may god continue to bless you and you family. See you in the next one.🌹

How you can take the drudgery part of gardening and still keep it enjoyable is kind of amazing I think it’s a little like you are a friend that we are just hanging out with while she trims her roses and she teaches as she’s doing. I doubt you’ll see this but there is a climbing rose you should look into. It’s called Sally Holmes. It is a ‘white ‘rose but not really. It’s buttery or creamy looking and the rose blooms grow in bunches as it climbs up your wall, etc. & from a distance you aren’t sure if it is a rose or something else because of those big bloomy bunches of creamy flowers. It’s beautiful.

Between you and Paul Zimmerman I had the confidence to prune all of my roses and even move a few bushes around to better locations. But after doing this job with
regular gardening gloves (ouch!) I quickly ordered some felco gloves. I have regular long sleeve rose gloves but they are so thick that I could not even use my pruners. 🙂

I planted a clematis in with my trellised rose (mine is a rambler, not a climber, I think) last year. Can’t wait to see the intermingling of the two this summer!

Thank you so much for this detailed pruning video Laura! I’m about to tackle my climbing rose that is on an arbor the end of this week. I’ve been so afraid to really get in there and do a hard prune. This video has given me the courage. I always trust you 😊

As usual I learned very quickly what I needed to know regarding any and every garden issue ! I was so afraid to prune my very large climbing rose so of course I learned from the best! She explains everything so throughly and easily showing us exactly what to do. The best of the best! I have been gardening as long as I can remember (I’m 62) and learn something new daily by watching Garden Answer! Thank you!,🥰

Thank you for teaching me so much about gardening. I was wondering who named Russell? His name seems to fit him to a tee.😺

That’s a beautiful scarf or cowl you’re wearing. Did you make it? Is it a pattern you can share?
Also, I am a caregiver for a 94 year old lady who has climbing roses surrounding her house. I followed tips from a previous video of yours and pruned them hard last year. They bloomed beautifully! Thank you for this refresher video! I can’t wait to get her roses pruned again! Happy gardening! 🥰
