I would tell any entry level coder to not just code for one specialty. Broadened your horizons early on in your career. Try and learn every specialty if you could. I coded ophthalmology for 25 plus years and then the pandemic hit and I end up getting laid off after 33 years, and now I’m navigating all these other specialties coding for an Ambulatory Surgical Center who does a lot of everything. Don’t limit or sell yourself short!!!

The pandemic opened a lot of jobs for pulmonology which provided my first opportunity just starting out but I agree with you, I would like to learn it all at a pcp or hospital? I’m already kind of tired of doing just one area of coding

I agree with the below comment. I finished school around 2016 and taught myself how to study for the credentials with the AHIMA study guide and a few other books. I have literally coded every area of outpatient. The VA hospitals are short staff on coders now and though it was hard to get in initially, now it isn’t as hard if you apply. There are over 600+ openings in the HIMS department. Many areas to be promoted to, coding can take you in various directions. For example, Informatics, CDI, Auditor, Lead Coder.
Also, because of the pandemic there are a lot of schools that are offering free tuition, especially in the medical field.
Staying in one area starting out, will make you a weak coder. If you decide to choose a specialty, do it after you get experience under your belt. It makes you more marketable, especially in this environment where there is a demand for coders.
Good video and i can tell that you love your job. Keep up with the value of what your credentials are worth because you can always do a counter offer for more money once you have experience.

I am about to start my classes for coding & billing. Im nervous because i know absolutely nothing about it. I decided on this because I hope eventually to get a remote job. My labor went terrible & they told me to wait mynturn in line for a c section that 4 girls was ahead of me.. My daughter was stuck in the birth canal near 5hrs, when we both was in distress all day anyways. She was born blue, they did CPR twice & she was in a vent 5 days, in the hospital for 3 weeks. She's severely brain damaged, she's 23 but like a 5 month old baby.. So im hoping to get this certificate and a remote job to be home with her. I started nursing school to become her homecare nurse but our nurse if 10yrs quit & I couldn't be in school 5 days a week for 1yr.

So, I am in my mid 40s, my friend decided to go into nursing about 5 years ago from coding. You can think on the lines of a NP for your current specialty in coding and the annual salary will make it very easy to cover your student loans. Just food for thought. You are young and you can do it. You would also gain the qualifications to be a coder for certain insurance companies that require at least an RN for claims review...

    • @fatherfemi7641

i agree, she should look into WHNP, since she such the passion for it. she’d do so good as in a clinical role, and it wouldn’t take as long as she thinks, AND it wouldn’t as long as she thinks. just 2 years rn, work in l&d while getting bsn, then 2 years while getting NP. I plan to do the same route with coding but PICU np or crna

Hello, Thank you for your videos. I am wondering if you could give me any advance on what school is the best school to go to Medical Coding? Also do you recommend doing the Billing also? I am located in the state of Wisconsin. I also would love to do General Surgery and or OBGYN.

I have already decided to get my CIRCC. In my area of AZ they make 90k! The cardiology chapter whipped my butt for sure but I also know that is exactly why others would avoid it. WINNING!.
I do have a question. How did you schedule your CPC exam? AAPC told me to contact my local chapter, they haven't been very responsive and the response I did get said they don't have any test scheduled for January. I'm trying to take my exam as soon as possible because my current job is killing my sanity. Any answers from anyone would be appreciated. Thank you for vids the help so much.
