I haven't watched episode 1 yet or your reaction, but early chapters of the manga are certainly dark. It doesn't stay this dark though. It's kind of just world building. It will still have occasional reminders that there's messed up things that happens, but it's not nearly as much of a focus.
I really enjoyed the first episode and it was a great way to draw in viewers I’m definitely gonna watch this anime!

Been explained already but the reason they showed the Goblins doing such horrific acts is to make you understand that they are indeed monsters and are not to be taken lightly. By the time slayer comes in you are rooting for him to completely destroy the little brutes. This brings you right into Goblin Slayers mindset.
its the classic "bad guy so bad you cant stand him" trick, make a villain do stuff thats so bad its unthinkable (for example, the sexual stuff) then you cheer more when they get defeated, lovely trope not really used much now

The show keeps hammering it on over the next few chapters in the manga. Thousands of goblins are shown, all of them insufferable monsters who do nothing but pillage, murder and rape, and the goblin threat isn't taken seriously by most people because the quests pay next to nothing and goblins are considered weak.
Goblin Slayer knows how big of a threat they actually pose, and he's the only one actively doing anything to stop it.
Its even acknowledged by the sword maidens phobia of them, which is interesting since she helped take down the demon lord 10 years before GS and she is more afraid of goblins than the demon lord

SuperMechaFrieza Goblin Slayer is not for everyone. This episode is particularly brutal making you relate to characters before murdering them. You’re are supposed to come out of this with legitimate hatred for goblins. You need some happy show to watch this alongside if you do continue.

1. 15 as an adult is only weird if you're using this world logic, law and rules. Even in our world in the past 15 was considered adult. Every story has their own internal logic, law and rules.
2. "Disturbing but satisfying." I think that's why the author/artists/animator showed us those disturbing scene. To give us a taste of what GS or the adventurers are feeling; to make us hate the goblins.
well the authors did a hell of a job, it even made me want to catch up on the manga, and i can tell you now, i cant look at goblins in any postive light anymore in and anime because of this one, i mean i think of overlord or now the slime anime, and i cant help but not trust them anymore.... lol which is dumb since different series, different interpretation of goblins, but still it tarnished their image forever for me some reason lol.. also it makes sense why the goblins in this series are that evil, and its because they are actually demons in goblin slayer and demons are supposed to be on this level of evil at bare minimum which barely happens now and days in shows.

No story as sad as Goblin Slayer's childhood, after all he is just a damaged person with many problems, especially to socialize. He is not any hero or someone especially strong, he just wants to kill goblins. He's Goblin Slayer.

The whole point of the first episode is to make you understand why goblin slayer has soo much hate for the goblins. Maybe he witnessed something like that’s happen to someone he cared about
Try his entire village. When he was a child, his village was attacked by goblins, and his older sister hid him in the floor of their home. He saw everything. He subsisted on dirt for days until the goblins left, and then he finally escaped. There's more details in the manga and the Year One prequel.

This anime has a lot of reference to D&D and similar game, I had flashbacks of the very first session I played while watching this episode and I felt the desire to hit the table with my face at every error that I saw.

Man back then (70s, 80s and 90s) this was the norm in anime. AoT is Sesame Street compared to stuff we had. Just look up Genocyber as one example.

I love how the show is totally unapologetic about embracing all the tropes of the roleplay game genre, with character classes, healing potions, having a limited number of spells/abilities, quests, level progression, etc.

mean an adult at 15 (even 12 in some stories) is completely normal for fantasy themed stories. When you join an guild / become an adventurer (usually at age 12-15) that is when you become an "adult", even in our history we used to consider teenager adults at some point. Even as a manga reader of GS I didn't find anything disturbing, the beginning chapters in the manga / novel and now episode of anime introduce the readers / viewers to a world that, much like our own life is not all rainbows and fluffy and cuteness. Not gonna say realistic since we don't have goblins and elves, etc.. but they do a good job at connecting the "we live in a fucked up kinda world" theme. It shouldnt get any worse than the introductory chapters / episode the rest is all about Goblin Slayer interacting with members of his party and changing him little by little
I miss when anime fans were anime fans. Now everyone wants family friendly stuff because they can make money reacting to anime. But people don't actually appreciate the weirdness of anime. The first decently weird anime in awhile and everyone just crying and throwing fits

Nope. Apparently the anime is the most explicit version. The manga hides more and it has less impact (no screaming and animation and actually more scenes of it in the anime) and the novel doesn't graphically describe it.

Back in medieval times, you would basically be an adult at 15. You were expected to take on responsibility earlier on than kids now.
They didn't know how to fight as a group and so they failed.You would think that if you were going after a bunch of rapey goblins you would be overly prepared.I love this anime and every time he slaughters goblins it makes you smile.

Goblin Slayer is a series that looks into what happens when adventurers stop going after Goblins and other low-level creatures and they're allowed to multiply and get out of control.
I can see why you put "WTF?!" in the title... WTF indeed.
As a manga reader I suggest you continue. It's a very good series. They handle the mature content well in my opinion. The reason why the goblins do what they do makes sense.
This is a really good anime so far. Sure its grim but thats why its attractive. A lot of series are watered down and end up not showing consequences for actions and have no real sense of fear or threat to the heroes. The intensity is a huge draw, we will see if it keeps its tone as the show goes on however. Clearly not for everyone, but sometimes the darker sides of life are the most appealing for the emotional responses they bring out of us. They remind us of what we've been through and what we keep going through.
Honestly that is arguably the darkest the show gets. Goblin Slayer is the Batman of his world.

Idk I grew up watching a lot of fucked up anime. This didn't really do much for me lol This episode felt sort of inspired by Berserk.
Baki The Grappler was pretty dark when I saw it... I meant the old version... the new one on Netflix is a sequel... and it is still pretty dark... with lots of gore and violence...
Most newer dark fantasy style anime draw inspiration from Berserk, it has had the largest impact of that genre. As far a GS goes the inspiration is more noticeable in the manga where they had time to flesh out characters and motives a bit more.

To pile up to other comments, not only in medieval times but even in even ancient times, people didn't live as long as we live today due to wars and lack of advance medicine, so yes, 15 years old was considered to be an "adult"
Now we live in more "advanced" and less war like times than before so there's no rush to live faster anymore.

The setting is during the medieval ages, at fifteen both men and women were considered adults. They could get married, have children, and were even drafted into war during those times. Also the Goblins are doing those things to women because their species does not have females, they're all males. Thus why they kidnap village women and the like. This is actually heavily based off of myths of goblins in Europe, it is also hinted in Dungeons and Dragons which the author of the Light Novel has stated as the basis for his setting.
