I agree 100%. I knit a lot into my 20's, but having children and a job meant that I didn't have as much time for hobbies. Now that my kids are older I have started knitting again, and I have watched a lot of RUclips knitting tutorials. Yours are among the very best. Not only are your tips technically good, but you also give options for different types of knitters and give gentle guidance which encourages us to remember why fell in love with knitting in the first place.
I clicked in this video expecting to learn new ways to knit faster (which I did!) What I did not anticipate is how lovely, warm, and friendly you are. Those comments at the end were very touching for someone who struggles with perfectionism in everything, not just knitting. So glad I found you!

Love the pep talk near the end encouraging knitters not to be so hard on themselves! I have taught knitting for 45 year and it amazes me how often people take themselves to task and devaluate their craft. Knitting is fun!!!
“Speed knitting should never be a compromise” So well said. I have been knitting for less than a year and have been stressing about not being able to knit as fast as others on RUclips. So what if I can’t complete a pair of socks in a week? Thank you for encouraging me to continue enjoying my knitting rather than worry about how fast I am getting things done!
Kate, you got this! Exactly...besides, after only a year it would be quite the miracle if you were super fast already. Besides, this is a hobby, not a chore :P
Oh, BTW...you are making knitting fun again...also with your encouragement, I won't feel like I should just stick with my crocheting. You are very relatable and a positive person! 😁🌞
Oh Norman! That last bit about not comparing oneself to others is invaluable advice. God bless you brother! Thank you for your video posts. I think you’re great.
I'm usually a flicker,, but I can knit Continental style as well. In fact, I use both when knitting colour work. I carry one yarn in each hand, and work the individual stitches in the requisite colour, either flicking or picking as needed. Much more efficient than constantly dropping one colour and picking up the other.
I have been knitting since i was a child and i am now just figuring out thanks to you that there are differnt styles of holding needles and tensioning yarn! Its crazy how much variation there can be to a craft, thanks for the tips, super informative
Thank you for reminding us that it's about the experience of making and not how perfectly, or in my case imperfectly we do it. I sometimes want to give up when I feel like my tension and speed isn't improving. On the other hand, I've learned a lot in the last year. Glad I found your videos, they help tremendously.
Take your time April...most knitters will continue to do so until their 80ies. No need to get it all right at the begining. :) And as you say, you learned a lot in the last year and that's something you can look back to and be proud of! Some people don't try to learn new things at all.

Thank you so much for such an informative video! I really enjoyed it! I am an English knitter but recently tried knitting Continental style in order to speed up a bit. While it has certainly helped me with stranded colour work, I found Continental knitting quite painful for my arthritic hands so decided to stick with my throwing. Your video has reminded me that although my to do list just keeps getting longer and longer, I prefer to enjoy my knitting rather than speed knit my way through a sweater in under a week. Thank you Norman 💜
very well said. And really, do whatever does your good. Nobody else can tell you that! it's all about the joy :) PS: For me throwing is very painful in the long run. So, just another important reminder that there is no right or wrong in knitting.
I learned knitting the English style, which caused me a lot of pain in the hands and wrists, after a decade. I tried Continental knitting, but never managed to get the tension right. When I discoverd Norwegian knitting (through Arne & Carlos videos), it changed my knitting life, at least for the level of pain. If you have arthritis, maybe that style could help you. In the end, no matter what styles were knitting in, the important thing is to be able to enjoy our passion and have happy knitting time :)
Great tips and I love the last one the most. I don't compare myself to other knitters. I do what works for me and, most of all, I enjoy myself and my creations. Knitting is such an incredible and diverse skill and the people in the knitting community, like you, are simply amazing. 🙏

You are an amazing teacher. Love your tutorials because the slow motion makes it easy to follow along and you also do normal speed. Your directions are easy to understand and follow. Love your personality and thank goodness I found you
I know you said you don't have to change your style of knitting - but I think I'm going to. I learned with the English style, but I'm a far more proficient crocheter than knitter. I think holding the yarn in the left hand and "hooking" with the right needle might produce better results for me and allow me to go faster as this is quite similar to how the yarn is held and hooked in crochet. Thank you for this very informative video :)
Thank you for this tutorial. Being a Lever knitter, trying knitting on circular needles was a shock at how slow I was. These tips will help me. Thanks to you, I have knitted a hat in the round Thank you
I am almost 70 years old, have knitted on and off throughout my life and I findv this video is more helpful than all of the videos I have watched about knitting all put together. Your passion and care make your instructions and advice easy to follow and very encouraging. Thank you.❤️
You are more than just a knitter you are an inspiration to all who view you. I watched your tips on how to knit faster and I didn’t subscribe until the very in when you spoke about not giving up on something you are passionate about. Knitting is new to me, I crochet, draw, write poetry, cook, and well not much I wouldn’t at least try on. Knitting did come easy but the part of how slow was getting to me. Now I know I don’t need to worry about anything as long as I love what I see and others enjoy what is given. Thank you so much for such a beautiful lesson. May the sun always shine brightly around you. Blessings
These are great tips. I like what you said about loving the hobby being more important than being fast. The tensioning tip made an immediate difference for me - I’m sure eventually it will help me knit faster but in the first instance it simply felt better, like I had more control. The only thing I changed was wrapping it around my little finger once and suddenly it felt sooo much more comfortable. So in that sense I can enjoy knitting more even if I don’t knit faster! Thank you!!!
Norman, i love your last tip: knitting is not a race! We run around like headless chicken in our daily life fast enough without having to rush knitting. I have been knitting a 1950's fair isle cardigan since beginning of october and i'm finishing it today but i also knit a chunky sweater from start to finish for my bf last week. There was no competition which one i enjoyed knitting the most... yep, the number 3.25 mm fair isle cardigan is the slow knitting olympics winner!
I’ve recently found your site and I just wanted to congratulate you. I’m an old-time English-style knitter but so enjoy your refreshing and positive approach and am loving learning new things. I also wanted to say that your final comments are more than knitting tips - they’re tips for life! Thank you ❤
I'm not a very fast knitter, but I have been able to teach myself be more of a flicker than a thrower. Random thing, you have the most beautiful natural finger nails I've ever seen. I wish mine looked that clean and beautiful.
I like how you knit reminds me of my grandmother. She was Czech. She taught me when I was young then at school I was taught differently. Gave up knitting until I had my child now have combined both styles in a way that suits me.
Thank so much for this video! I have started learning stranded color work and it became clear very early on that learning continental knitting would help make it easier. I originally clicked on this to learn about knitting faster, but I ended up getting a lot of great tips on continental and finally got my tension to improve. I also love your comments about the joy of knitting, not the speed. When I have finished a project, I don't see how quickly I knit it, I only see the quality of it and have the sense of accomplishment that I made myself or someone else an item that they will cherish and enjoy. Much knitting wisdom in this video. :)
RUclips suggested this video for me and I’m so glad I watched! Your videos feature excellent photography and explanations and loads of content. Of course, I’m now a subscriber!
I'm so glad I watched this. Tomorrow will be for the needle review. Your videos are very helpful & easy to follow. I knit Norwegian style now but the other tips are perfect!
Working mom with multiple hobbies here… I love knitting, and I do a little bit almost every day. But we are talking a very little bit. I came to this video last year feeling bad that I rarely finish anything, and came away feeling renewed. It’s about process for me at this time in my life! I can enjoy knitting slowly, neatly, and over a long time - and stop comparing myself to others. Yes, I can work on my form and speed, and even make a bit of progress. Progress, process, and over a long time, eventually… a product I am proud of. This video is one for me to return to periodically! And it’s always fun to see Norman with long hair - and that sweater! 🔥
I love your Channels I found your podcast from Debbie the Canadian crocheter. Your the best! I ♡ the way you teach I was taught by my mother when I was 14. Then found crocheting was so much easier. Hello from the tropical island of Puerto Rico. Between May and June I decided to knit a couple of things for my son. Because I have not knit nor crochet after I learned years ago, I started watching knitting and crochet videos. I subscribed to a couple of them that I liked but nothing like your channel and Barbara Benson's channel. I have learned so much from you and her that you have no idea. Both are knitting channels but a lot of the information applies also to crochet like the advice to make a swatch, to block the swatch and the pieces, what type of needles to use, to enjoy what you are doing and to not compare yourself with other knitters or crocheters. Thanks!💜💙💚
always a pleasure to read from a fellow crafter from a tropical country. Happy to hear the hobby gets enjoyed all around the world and I can be part of that
My name is Regina I live in Texas I am just teaching myself all things textiles art teaching myself to knit and teaching myself to crochet this channel is very good you are very good teacher thank you
You are so sweet. Thank you for the pep talk. You are so right. We cannot compare ourselves to others. In fact, one can't know how other people are trying to stay happy. And knitting is such a happy pastime. Oh, and your eyes are incomparable. So beautiful blue with a hint of the stormy sea. Thank you for the tips on how to knit faster. I was afraid to watch it because sometimes I try to knit faster and end up knitting slower because I didn't know these little tips! Danka
Thank you! I thank God i found your website. I've been trying to learn how to knit....i stopped in frustration. But after i found your channel, i became encouraged again and i started to practice and learn again. You are a great teacher!! Keep safe and God Bless you more!!!
I'm so glad I came across this video. The picking explanation helped me quite a bit, can't wait to practice with the garter stitch. I also appreciate your kind closing comments. Knitting is not a race, how well said. Than\k you!
I have some Norwegian friends and you are so like them. Norman your style of knitting is so relaxing. I knit the Norwegian way. This is a quick way to knit but sometimes I like to knit slowly. I enjoy every stitch. Now I listen to your accent more closely I can hear the Germannic style. Germany is a lovely country and the German people are so warm and friendly. I hope we can keep in touch. Lol Jacqui from Seahouses UK x
Germans..warm and friendly? You must have been to a different part of my country. Here, far in the south, people are more like crumpy and reserved :P I do have some Norwegian friends as well. And I can definitely see where you are coming from. Probably cuz I grew up high in the alps, which is, in many ways, similar (despite the distance).
I love this channel. Whether I'm cooking or knitting along, I find them easy to follow along with. Your voice is also very soothing to listen to. I'm currently working on a dish cloth following one of your other videos, and it's just working up beautifully. I love my homemade dish cloths, and have been wanting to knit some up for ages (bored of the same old same old crochet options). I could see myself sitting and knitting over a nice cup of tea with you. Very pleasant person 💕
After learning to knit in my teens then having 5 children and now I’m 61 and teaching myself how to knit again. So, taking your advice not to pick up bad habits I’m watching your tutorials on continental knitting and I’m loving it. Slowly picking it up.😎finding it easier than the English method with my arthritis. And also keeping my brain working 😂 The way you explain things.. wonderful.!!
Thank you so much! that's really what I'm trying to do...helpful tips for beginners with little morsels for advanced knitters here and there so everyone can get something out of these videos.
@@NimbleNeedles why not both? I’m not opposed to supporting creatives who have something of value to offer if it means by doing so they can offer more content. Your expertise and way of communicating is impeccable. I think you would have a lot to offer on a platform like Skillshare or Craftsy. As someone who has used both and been mostly disappointed by what’s available there, i would have still saved money even if I paid for one of your classes as opposed to having paid for several classes from instructors who did not elevate my understanding of knitting in the same way you have. That said, I’m a broke girl so cut me a discount if you ever go that route? 😂

I just found you while searching for a tutorial on double knitting. You are very easy to follow and explain things well. I’ve watched a few of your videos and will watch more. Oh, I’ve been knitting over 50 years, but we can always learn something new.
Thank you for sharing your knitting techniques. I love your video. You are so relaxed and easy going that it makes it so much easier to follow along. As others have said, you should write a book. It would be a huge success.
I use picking AND throwing when I do color knitting, like when I make Icelandic style sweaters. It's very fast, and satisfying to hold three colors in my hands and knit like this! Nice video.
Thank you so much Norman! I knew there was a little tweak I needed to do to get better at continental and your very clear instructions showed it me what to do! ❤ from Melbourne Australia ❤
I learned the very basics as a child from my mom, but had to relearn once I became an adult. I subscribed to you, cuz it looks like your videos will really help me improve, since I no longer have my mom.
Knitting is an art. The creation of that art should be what gives you the pleasure and not so much having an end product. So enjoy the trip more than the destination. My son once asked my why I keep spinning more yarn when I haven’t used much of what I have made so far. He thinks it’s a waste of my time. I enjoy the process of spinning and watching fluff turn into yarn which I could use. I really like washing my winter creations in summer and seeing all the lovely stuff hanging there. It gives me a sense of pride. Nevermind that it’s not as even as it’s’supposed’ to be. Wasted time ? No! The joy in the process and the glow inside at the lovely hanks is worth the clutter in my cupboard :)
Watched this in its entirety! Outstanding job especially the end of the video! I loved your eloquent way of explaining how different knitters are! Beautifully done👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🌹 I taught myself crochet and knitting back in the 60s no internet then only black & white illustrations of how the yarn travels. Later in life I married, had 2 children, became a single mom, and gave it up after 30 yrs. Now I’ve returned to it, and realized that I still remember all the things I’d taught myself especially with knitting 🧶 and you e only proven how much I’ve learned Thank You very much for a remarkable job with this video👍🏽🌹
Ha..i guess it's like ridign a bicycle - you will always remember no matter how many years have passed. And happy to hear you came back to knitting It can be such a rewarding hobby Carla :)
I only realized a couple days ago that using my middle finger to knit and leaving the index finger to tension the yarn will improve my continental knit speed. Then, just when I needed it, you went into great detail about how exactly to pick. This information in particular, along with the other tips, are practical and very useful. Thanks so much!
Hey Lorraine, very happy to hear I can help you along on your knitting journey and learning how to knit continental. But do feel free to comment again if you are stuck or feel you still need any help! :)
It is so wonderful to see how you do things slow motion, and with all of your "helps"! The positive thoughts offered are probably the most important part of all your videos. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR GIFT TO EVERY ONE FOR FREE!!! GOD BLESS YOU....
That was a helpful one. :) I found that my Mom taught me exactly the same way to knit like you do. Exept of holding the yarn differently, I do everything the same way you do. :) Keep up these useful tips.
Hi! It's really nice that you are so enthusiastic and go into full detail. I've just started knitting and found your channel and I love it. I'm getting so much better thanks to your explanations. Regards from the neighborhood (Budapest)

I could listen to you all day.. Thank You for Being You.. I Praise God I found you.. Have a God Blessed Evening.. and Thank You Again..😔🙏🕊🤟
"Just because someone knits faster doesn't mean the hobby will bring them more joy."
Such a wise point that's true of any hobby!
You are an amazing teacher. Love your tutorials because the slow motion makes it easy to follow along and you also do normal speed. Your directions are easy to understand and follow. Love your personality and thank goodness I found you
And I am happy to have you hear on my channel. And thank you for your amazing feedback Pamela! :)
I love the way you encourage fellow knitters. Glad I found your channel.
always. there's so much stupid shaming in the world. if more people spread the love, we maybe can break the cycle one day.
Thank you for this tutorial.
Being a Lever knitter, trying knitting on circular needles was a shock at how slow I was.
These tips will help me.
Thanks to you, I have knitted a hat in the round
Thank you
I am almost 70 years old, have knitted on and off throughout my life and I findv this video is more helpful than all of the videos I have watched about knitting all put together.
Blessings
Very happy to hear that because it's a topic that is dear to my heart! welcome to my channel
that last piece of advice should be applied to life in general too! what a great insightful video. thank you!
The way you tension your yarn was a life saver! Thank you!
You are so welcome, Karen!
Your last comment on just enjoy your hobby and don't compare yourself to others was the best tip of the series.
thank you mariyln. I did publish a video recently that focused soley on these kind of things (5 things every knitter needs to hear)
Lol. Let's say I do have to put in quite a bit of work before each video...or it would look like I came straight from the garden 🤣
Really great suggestions. And that beautiful yarn had me daydreaming!
Ah..that is a lovely DK Wollmeise yarn. Has quite the lovely luster indeed!
I cannot believe that I have finally learned to knit by watching your videos. You are a very good teacher!
Wow, thank you!
I like how you knit reminds me of my grandmother. She was Czech. She taught me when I was young then at school I was taught differently. Gave up knitting until I had my child now have combined both styles in a way that suits me.
Well, my grandparents actually lived very close to the (then) border. So, that could explain things :)
@@NimbleNeedles Czech border? I'm from Czechia (Moravia) and my grandmother taught me to knit the same way you do.
I am brand new in knitting. Thank you so much for making videos that are informative, relaxed and uplifting.
Happy to hear that my little video was able to help you. Note: I have a fair isle video here on my channel as well!
RUclips suggested this video for me and I’m so glad I watched! Your videos feature excellent photography and explanations and loads of content. Of course, I’m now a subscriber!
Welcome aboard, nancy! Glad to hear you find my videos valuable!
You’re literally the best knitting youtuber ever!!! I love youuu ❤️❤️❤️
aww..thank you...tho, don't let my partner hear it ^-^
I'm so glad I watched this.
I've Crochet over 40 yrs just picked up knitting again 3 months ago. Thankyou so much. You're help me understand much better. I have completed a few washcloths, 2 scarfs, now working on a Raglan cardigan. LOVE YOU ♡♡
Dori from Virginia US
yah, I saw how she mentioned me in her last video. Do send her my regards, please (i already did so myself, but twice cannot hurt, right? :p). and very happy to hear I was able to help you dorene! :)
Happy to hear the hobby gets enjoyed all around the world and I can be part of that
Lovely, clear, useful video and fantastically with NO rubbish sound in the background. Thanks.
heh. thank you! though I do have to say some of my videos do have a very muted background music (to hide background noices :P))
You are a great teacher and such an awesome person. Thank you for being so kind to the audience you are speaking to. It is so refreshing to hear.
My name is Regina I live in Texas I am just teaching myself all things textiles art teaching myself to knit and teaching myself to crochet this channel is very good you are very good teacher thank you
Best knitting tutorial I have watched! U are right when u say go in slow motion and increase speed gradually
Thank you so much 😊
Oh my, another great instructional video. I await your videos daily. Great job! Thank you.
😊❤ though I am about to change the schedule to once a week, not daily 😅
You are so sweet. Thank you for the pep talk. You are so right. We cannot compare ourselves to others. In fact, one can't know how other people are trying to stay happy. And knitting is such a happy pastime. Oh, and your eyes are incomparable. So beautiful blue with a hint of the stormy sea. Thank you for the tips on how to knit faster. I was afraid to watch it because sometimes I try to knit faster and end up knitting slower because I didn't know these little tips! Danka
You really are a treasure. Wasnt expecting the motivational bit there at the end, but it makes me appreciate your content all the more.
These tips are invaluable. Thank you so much. What a lovely person you are ❤.
Thank you! I thank God i found your website. I've been trying to learn how to knit....i stopped in frustration. But after i found your channel, i became encouraged again and i started to practice and learn again. You are a great teacher!! Keep safe and God Bless you more!!!
Wonderful, Maridel. And feel free to comment any time you need help!
So glad I found this today ❤✝️
I'm so glad I came across this video. The picking explanation helped me quite a bit, can't wait to practice with the garter stitch. I also appreciate your kind closing comments. Knitting is not a race, how well said. Than\k you!
Awesome! I love watching others knit! You knit exactly like I do…..I am always looking for ways to speed up knitting.
Here, far in the south, people are more like crumpy and reserved :P
I do have some Norwegian friends as well.
Heh...I never can say no to a good cup of tea 🥰
After learning to knit in my teens then having 5 children and now I’m 61 and teaching myself how to knit again.
So, taking your advice not to pick up bad habits I’m watching your tutorials on continental knitting and I’m loving it. Slowly picking it up.😎finding it easier than the English method with my arthritis. And also keeping my brain working 😂
The way you explain things.. wonderful.!!
Wisdom along with tips! I’m so impressed with how you cover the bases AND have such incite to all the many types of knitter personalities :-)
Thank you so much! that's really what I'm trying to do...helpful tips for beginners with little morsels for advanced knitters here and there so everyone can get something out of these videos.
My new favorite knitting channel on yt. I’ve spent money on crafts classes trying to improve my efficiency. If only I’d found this first! So helpful.
oh wow...does this mean I should be glad to have you hear or sad as I should be charging money? haha :P
@@anchbom5407 well, putting out a course that brings value takes a lot of time..and as you said..i wouldn't want to put something up there that's not worth it. So..time really is the constricting factor here :)
I just found you while searching for a tutorial on double knitting. You are very easy to follow and explain things well. I’ve watched a few of your videos and will watch more. Oh, I’ve been knitting over 50 years, but we can always learn something new.
I'm a new knitter and I love your video, and especially your perspectives at the end of the video. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your knitting techniques. I love your video. You are so relaxed and easy going that it makes it so much easier to follow along. As others have said, you should write a book. It would be a huge success.
I appreciate your positive messaging on your channel!
Always! that's one of my main goals really - encourage people to have fun!
I use picking AND throwing when I do color knitting, like when I make Icelandic style sweaters. It's very fast, and satisfying to hold three colors in my hands and knit like this! Nice video.
Thank you for being that much generous and special thanks for your last note about comparing
I loved your comments at the end 😊💓thanks for teaching us!
Thank you for the remarks at the end! Such warm, kind, and, for me, much needed and appreciated reminders.
I’ve never learned more in one sitting out of all my 50 years of on again off again knitting than l have
From you. thanks so much
Happy to help!
Welcome to my channel 🥰
Knitting is an art. The creation of that art should be what gives you the pleasure and not so much having an end product. So enjoy the trip more than the destination.
My son once asked my why I keep spinning more yarn when I haven’t used much of what I have made so far. He thinks it’s a waste of my time. I enjoy the process of spinning and watching fluff turn into yarn which I could use. I really like washing my winter creations in summer and seeing all the lovely stuff hanging there. It gives me a sense of pride. Nevermind that it’s not as even as it’s’supposed’ to be. Wasted time ? No! The joy in the process and the glow inside at the lovely hanks is worth the clutter in my cupboard :)
exactly!
Watched this in its entirety! Outstanding job especially the end of the video! I loved your eloquent way of explaining how different knitters are! Beautifully done👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🌹
I taught myself crochet and knitting back in the 60s no internet then only black & white illustrations of how the yarn travels.
You're a very lovely teacher, thanks for this. I'm trying to knit continental after years of English.
❤❤❤ I’m a thrower and knitting socks takes forever. Hoping to speed things up by changing things up
You are a breath of fresh air and very practical thank you
glad to hear that Mel :)
Thanks norman, I’m slow and joyful as a beginner.
I’m proud to say that I’m the slowest knitter on Earth. I’ve been knitting for 50 years and it’s the process I enjoy.
You are so welcome Gregg! :)
That was a helpful one. :) I found that my Mom taught me exactly the same way to knit like you do. Exept of holding the yarn differently, I do everything the same way you do. :) Keep up these useful tips.
I like your holistic view with this theme!
Hi!
It's really nice that you are so enthusiastic and go into full detail. I've just started knitting and found your channel and I love it. I'm getting so much better thanks to your explanations.
Regards from the neighborhood (Budapest)
*Waves back from Vienna*
You are a great teacher. I really appreciate the tip about starting slow for muscle memory and relaxing my hands.
Great tips on becoming a faster, better knitter. Thanks also for the inspiration.
OMG!! THE PICKING!!! Danke schön 🙏🏽
Heh. Bitteschön 😊❤
You are a great teacher. My name is Regina I live in Texas. I am new teaching myself to KNIT
Wonderful. Welcome to my channel Regina!
This just brought my knitting skills to a new level!!♥️
