Oh. My. Word. What a difference your video has made! I’m a crocheter who is trying to teach myself to knit. I was practicing Russian style, but was still struggling to achieve a smooth hand movement. Norwegian is so much easier! I’m still very rusty and loose, but I believe I’ll get it. Thank you so much!
Yay!!! 🎉 Your tension will 💯 improve with practice! So no worries there. When I started this style I practiced on a blanket until I got comfortable and then I was knitting everything with confidence! You will too! Congrats! It’s a fun method 💖
@@cathyheffner8002 I, too, am a crocheter and I am trying to teach myself to knit! You're right - this style is what I need to make the process easier.
@@cathyheffner8002 it is so interesting to see other people's perspective and abilities. I'm a crocheter who thought all knitting was just knitting I didn't know there were various Styles and each time I thought I wanted to learn how to knit someone was teaching me some different way or I picked up a book and didn't pay attention to the title just look to see how the movements were supposed to go... I had beginners luck every time I tried, but I began to realize every time I tried it again, it was different then I remembered and then I came to learn that they're actually are different styles of castons just like there are different styles of knitting however unless you know this and you look up a video that says how to do this way or that way you don't know. So I was just watching all knitting videos and tutorials that were showing some really pretty stitched just so I could get used to how the needles are supposed to move. And then one day I noticed that the easiest way I could figure things out was on these wordless videos that had Russian titles. So I just asked Google what is the old traditional way of knitting called in Russia. I found out that there are three names, which are Eastern, Eastern European, and Russian knitting. I also found English titles to show you how the basics of Russian knitting is and there are lots and lots of Russian titles showing you how to do lots and lots of pretty stitches, and believe me they are very good at demonstrating you can pick it right up just by watching. If you happen to be a question asker before you get very far in doing something, let me tell you if you quit the asking and just keep watching and apply some super Focus you will learn that you don't need words.
Game Changer!!!! I'm an English style knitter, in fact, more lever style than anything as I can get a good speed with that. I have never been able get on with continental knitting and I've tried numerous times. I could just about manage the knit stitch although it was more like this picking style but the purl stitch and bringing the yarn in front was beyond me. I envy people who can do the continental style. However, this I have managed to grasp in just a few rows, even the purl stitch. You must have a magic touch when it comes to teaching. I shall practice it a bit more but I already feel confident enough to give it a go in my next project. I'm still a bit fingers and thumbs as it's only been an hour but already I'm really liking this style. I know it will take a while to master it but it's a learning curve I'm enjoying. Thank you, so so much, for sharing this.
Thank you so much for commenting!! It’s wonderful to hear the tutorials are helpful ❤️ i found it takes a little practice to get the tension down but after that you’re golden! I practiced knitting a stockinette blanket to get my tension and that helps immensely! Good luck!! 💖
I found combination style for continental was the game changer for me, allows you to pick your purls and knits, you just knit through the back loop! Yarn is automatically on the front side for purls and backs for knits!
My exact feelings. English style knitter. Tried continental style - knitting sort of okay but purling awful. I also crochet. Will definitely try this Norwegian style purling …
As a crocheter all my life, when I learned to knit, I went straight to Norwegian style and didn't even know it. I thought I was doing Continental. I've just never been a fan of having my fingers sticking in the air. For purling, I initially tried Continental purling and was like, "Absolutely not." Norwegian purling saved my knitting journey.
Thank you so much for showing how to do this! Ive been struggling with different styles of knitting and you just made this beginner knitter actually enjoy knitting!
I do the Norwegian knit stitch, but found the purple stitch was too much movement for my hands. I now bring the yarn to the front and do a close continental purl. It's made doing ribbing really quick.
I knit stockenette Norwegian Style. After I got the hang of it, I loved it so much better, but for me, when I purl, I guess you would call it picking. I just bring my yarn to the front, grab it and put through. So fast and easy. I think purling this way is fun, but no matter how hard I tired, I personally had issues with uniformity.
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I also struggled at first to get a nice uniform look. I practiced with a blanket and that really helped with tensioning. But honestly if you enjoy purling the other way, I’d do that then. It’s all about enjoyment 🩷 So happy you found my channel!
I was taught russian style way back when (10+ years ago) and just recently i got back into knitting and i was following a korean tutorial which is apparently Norwegian style. You do the same as you do at 6:50 , go from the front and pick up the thread from the back. I do the same thing for every row and the pattern looks like waves, it's so pretty 😺
Same! I also started with the Russian style. It does make it look pretty! It twists the stitches. But if you’d rather it didn’t just pick the yarn the other way. When I’m designing I pick the opposite way so they don’t twist. Sorry I should have mentioned it in the video but it comes so naturally I don’t notice all the time. Happy you found my channel 🩷
I've subscribed because your video is super-clear to watch the knit & purl techniques of the Norwegian style. Am an English style knitter needing a change ... and a challenge😊. Thank you.
When you do a purl make sure on the last step the needle is on the right side of the yarn to your finger . If it on the left side it will make a yarn over . Ask me how I know. Lol . folks once u get the hang of the way she is knitting you will love it . I’m self taught and this is how I knit.
I'm a crochet girl, I'm uncomfortable English knitting so have up. I just tried continental knitting but could not do the pearl stitches. Hunted around and found you! What a difference, I can keep my working yarn in my left hand and just get on with it. I think this pearl stitches h is the easier than my previous attempts. Thank you so very much. I'm looking got to creating something soon😃
Thanks for this video! I’m always reteaching myself the different ways to knit and purl. It is taking a little time but I’m sure my tension and muscle memory will all even out quickly! Anyway… thanks so much. I’m having fun and loving Norwegian purling!
Thank you!!!! I am a crocheter who is brand new to knitting was struggling so much with continental! I do like English bc it feels like I have more control, but this feels so smooth I think I can actually knit with this! Especially the purl, which is tricky but feels 100 times easier this method!
Wait… I’m on the same boat! I want to make a cardigan for fall/winter but at the rate I’m knitting with continental it’s going horribly 😤 I put it down in frustration after trying for an hour or two. I go back to crochet as my comfort zone 😂
I wanted to learn knitting bc I always see these beautiful color worked sweaters and I want to make one so bad! But I was feeling the same where I would get discouraged and just stick to crochet - I thought no way I would be able to knit something decent sized bc I struggled so much it just felt so strange in my hands. I think part of it for me is how free the crochet hook is vs how stiff I have to hold the knitting needles to not lose stitches, but I think I am getting better at it. I can say I just learned this technique from this video a few days ago and I am already halfway through a sock! Lol it’s slow going, but it feels like something I could get faster at eventually with more muscle memory. It is so worth it to try different methods bc some things just work better or worse for different people!
Ok so I typically knit continental & Swedish style but I need to practice the Norwegian purl way! Not having to flick the guide yarn to the front & back between pirl & knit could speed up my knitting so much & prevent wrist tension. ❤🥹 Thank you for the very clear demonstration & explanation! I also greatly appreciate the measurement reference for how to measure the yarn for an appropriate length to use in LTCO. Liked & subscribed with all notifications on. 🥰
You’re very welcome ☺️ It can be intimidating at first but you got this! It’s just practice. When I taught myself the Norwegian purl stitch I made a blanket so I could get the hang out it plus it really helped with tension. Which made all the difference. Good luck! 💕
Such a great and helpful video. The only thing that’s missing is at the beginning when you’re casting on you don’t specify whether the tail end should be around your thumb or your index finger. I found almost every video I’ve watched from any creator neglect to tell whether or not the tail is at the front or the back of the work when your first casting on. Can anyone help with this.
I struggled with Continental knitting, keeping that finger in the air was just not working, couldn’t keep it taut enough and my hand hurt after a while. Norwegian knitting is sooo much easier. Thanks for this
Have always knitted English style but hard to do with circular needles so tried continental style. Knitting okay but just can’t get comfortable with purling (I also crochet) but I think your way is brilliant and will try it. Thank you so much.

I definitely experienced that at first. I practiced with blankets to get the tension right. It helps to give it a slight tug as you knit. Wish I could explain it better but that’s what I do.
Long-tail cast-on: 1:19
Knit stitch: 5:37
Norwegian purl stitch: 9:47

This is how I have always knit. Didn’t know it had a name. Just evolved for me as the easiest way to knit.
Love that. That was my story as well but with the Eastern or Russian knitting method
As a beginner, what needles do you recommend trying out? Metal or wood and sizing??
Great question! I would go with sizes 4 mm, 4.5 mm and 5 mm in wood. I say wood because metal is way more slippery (great for speed when you’re more comfortable knitting). I suggest these sizes because it gives you a range to work with DK and worsted weight yarns. Chunky yarn (especially super chunky) will hurt your hands- experienced or not so for a more pleasurable experience I’d go with worsted weight to start and then a DK (which is a little finer). The needles I suggested with go both yarn weights. Happy knitting!!
