- Story time! Today I'll tell you a brief history of why/how I wound up in Russia so many years ago at this point in time. I'll also show you something about Moscow which I absolutely hate, something that many other foreigners all seem to love.
Sorry about the shaky camera work. The selfie stick + auto-stabilization (especially in a mix of light and shade) doesn't make for the smoothest video experience. When I do these in the future, I'll be working to make them easier to sit through

The fact is that Russian weather conditions wear out road surfaces within a few years. In this case, it is cheaper to replace the entire coating and put this thing on a constant flow than to try to install something durable in the hope that it will not deteriorate.
The area behind the fence is a botanical garden; people are not allowed there for an obvious reason; rare plants grow there in their natural environment. But you can get there as part of an excursion group.
I don't buy your explanation. There are winter weather conditions akin to Russia in other countries and they're not ripping out last year's asphalt (if that's even the material they choose to use) every summer. I've literally been watching workers chew up two lanes of a local road that they replaced just last year and that's in absolutely normal condition and they've done it nearly every year, like clockwork. I feel like there are maybe other motivations (budgetary?) connected to the roadwork, but as far as curbstones, that's got nothing to do with weather
And about the gardens: you're right, they do take tours through there, at least once a day almost. I go walking and biking around there a lot in the summer and I've never seen anyone in there so I figured it was just closed off. I'll have to take an excursion through that part some time (we went and saw the peonies last year, great stuff)

@@russiaincontext I agree with you that the system is not perfect. If there is a sufficient budget, the authorities are based on dry numbers, and not on the real situation. Replacement of curb stones occurs in a planned manner throughout the city, and on the scale of one street, authorities simply may not pay attention (or turn a blind eye) to the historical importance or preservation of objects of a particular place.
But now it has become much easier and faster to contact the authorities; if people have comments, then through social tools these comments quickly reach the city authorities.

I love Moscow and I agree it’s one of the best cities in the world. I’ve lived in many countries around the world, I’ve lived in many major cities. I’ve spent about 19 years of my life in NYC, so I have something to compare Moscow with for sure. I can attest that Moscow is a very comfortable city to live in, especially, with such vast variety of services and business, delivery services available virtually 24/7. You can get almost anything delivered to your door within hour or hours of ordering it. I find it super convenient. Since 1990s Moscow has changed a lot and mostly in a great way. Also I’ve noticed that people have become more open, more friendly and they smile a lot more than they used to. I believe Moscow is going to be one of the best and technologically advanced cities in Europe within next 20-40 years.
The fact that Moscow has actual forests within its limits and not just its outskirts is crazy. 😅

Этот парк очень популярен среди родителей с детьми. Там так же гуляет много пожилых людей и молодых людей на велосипедах и роликах. И иногда там по громкой связи передавали объявление о том, что не следует близко подходить к кабанам и лосям, так как они могут быть опасны.😄Иногда их даже можно увидеть купающимися в пруду. И если ты найдёшь на карте московского метро станцию "Сокольники", то поймёшь, что это очень близко к центру. Всего 10 минут до красной площади на метро.

this is Soviet way of expanding cities - not to cover all territory by buildings and road but leave some forests untouched. i live in Minsk and it is green. no, it's GREEN :) it's even can be seen on satellite images.
We thank the city planners for that a lot.

I loved my time in Russia. You are lucky. I lived in Zelenograd for 2 years and 2 in Moscow. Make sure you visit Siberia and stay near Lake Baikal. My favorite.
BTW the new curb stones near the Moscow University are going to be granite. I saw them today, piles of granite slabs waiting to be installed.
Also, tourists are allowed into the botanical garden, there’s a gate across the street from Biology department. You need a ticket though.
I've been to see the peonies and someone else said that you could go into that area on tours. It's amazing what you can learn when you actually check the garden's website))
I think that it is a normal practice to renew a city facilities each time when it becomes too dirty or broken. Otherwise, everything will be like in NY or Berlin.
Sure, but there is nothing wrong or broken with the old curbstones that are being torn out, nor with sidewalks and road surfaces that are chewed up and replaced annually, that's my complaint - not that they're doing work on road and sidewalks, but that they're doing it in places that don't require it, just for the sake of doing it

@@russiaincontext most people making comments are not specialists in road construction and/or city budget allocation rules and constraints. It is a common Russian pastime, to blame the government if you don’t understand the logic of something: it would be fine if the proper research was conducted before doing so, however it is rarely the case.

@@Zanna_pr Блат в СССР был густопсовее. В царской России ещё того паче. На западе это вообще в порядке вещей (вплоть до степени лобби и чеболи). В нынешней России как раз минимизация этого явления (уже и губеров с министрами гоняют, включая министерство обороны). Так что снимать надо черные очки - помогает от агнозии.

Так что нет, памятник ему пусть Неизвестный лепит (как и нашим воронежским Кстенину и Гусеву -- тоже, безусловно, город хорошеет, но через плевок в душу, сколько исторических достопримечательностей сломали, причем без особой необходимости, где нагло, где подло, даже "аки тати в нощи", и в некоторых таких местах уже несколько лет просто пустыри, даже щебень после разгромов толком не вывезли (в частности, любимый Воронежцами "Полтинник", готический комплекс Первого хлебозавода :/

Однако, хочу добавить что разумно было бы на тротуарах делать плитку, а велосипедные дорожки асфальтировать. Тогда велосипеды и самокаты не будут досаждать пешеходам

@@russiaincontextПлитка - это хорошо (кстати, с нее заметно раньше сходит снег, чем с асфальта, поэтому у нас сильно расширился велосезон). Но вкупе с велодорожками -- самое то (особенно теперь, с гурьбой самокатчиков).
Это если пешеходы не будут ходить по велодорожкам, а велосипедисты и Иже с ними не будут съезжать на тротуары. Однако этого не происходит (я пару часов как с Воробьевых, наблюдала). Потому что, как известно, строгость и противоречивость российских законов уравновешивается необязательностью их исполнения
Отличная история о значке и последствиях. Так-то сам символ - это не то, что обычно пишут в популярных книгах, но в данном контексте это и не важно.
В те времена, когда Вы впервые приехали в Москву - этот город было сложновато любить, как и большинство городов России на тот момент. В 90-ые картина была еще печальнее. Но сегодня изменения очевидны. Даже в небольших городах (вероятно, не во всех) прогресс, в хорошем смысле этого слова, виден не вооруженным взглядом.
По поводу каменной кладки - да, не очень удобно по ней ездить на велосипеде и т.д. Ходить? Возможно, когда они немного сотрутся - в принципе, будет вполне комфортно. Может быть даже полезнее для здоворья ходить не по гладкой поверхности, если обувь имеет тонкую подошву (это просто мои фантазии, скажем так). И такого рода явления хоть и выглядят как "деньги на ветер" - имеют вполне себе чёткое экономическое обоснование: они дают работу людям - это раз, под это дело выделяются большие деньги - это два. В принципе, этих двух пунктов достаточно, чтобы понять почему это происходит.
С другой стороны, многим хочется сохранить прежний вид Москвы, тут Вы правы. Для многих людей - это воспоминания, дорогие сердцу моменты и всё такое прочее.

Для этого вы можете зайти на сайты мэра города или городской думы и сделать своё заявление он-лайн через специальную форму на сайте правительства. Заполните все положенные графы обращения и вы получите оффициальный ответ от властей на свою жалобу, кажется это займёт не больше 30 дней или меньше , это срок в течении которого они обязаны будут дать вам ответ. Далее вы сможете показать нам что они вам написали. Думаю, что мы будем вместе смеяться или нет. Желаю вам успехов, вы достойный москвич и патриот своего города!

It's kinda funny when I was in the 10th grade I walked into computer class and the teacher said we could sit wherever. So me being a shit head I went to the back. When I sat down this tall brunette sat down right besides me. Well the teacher did roll call when he said her name Natalia and she said her last name I looked at her I'm like your from Russia? She said yes Moscow. We became somewhat friends she started hanging with the seniors and she went her way. And I'm not trying to be mean or anything but she wasn't a "looker" so to say but had some cool stories. Her people had money I'm not gonna put her last name on here but yeah I know it didn't have much to do with the video but I'm kinda new to the channel and I wish I could travel the world and channels like this are the next best thing. Cool video man and good to get actual news and see the the other side of the "boogyman"
Thanks for the story! I actually forgot to mention that during my junior year, we had an exchange student from Vladivostok in the Russian Far East, around the same time I was falling in love with Russian literature. I didn't talk much with her, but the limited interactions we had made me more interested to break through a language barrier and learn more about people who seemed so similar
What did you do for a living upon arrival to Moscow? Teach English? Did you continue to study Russian when you arrived?

I am Russian. The reason why they change curbs and the other stuff supposedly comes down to kickbacks. That is they hire contractors and the contractors make kickbacks. I can't say that's really true it's just that some Russians think so. Maybe it's not true but rumor has it.

What's wrong with replacing old curbs with new curbs and putting down new asphalt? From what I saw in this video, these changes are indeed required. In general, Moscow mayor Sobyanin is absolutely amazing, he is the best, he has already done so much for the city and continues to do so much, he thinks about the city 24/7. Show me a place where it was good and he came and made it worse. There's just no such thing. He's making things better everywhere. I love his work, I trust him completely.
And I'm very glad you're completely satisfied with everything and love all the changes all the time. It must be wonderful

Есть предложение , организовать компанию по строительству тротуаров и укладке, уверен, что Вы сделаете все супер, нужно людей нанять и выиграть контракт с Мэрией Москвы. Not a complaint, but I am quite agree with you that 'construction', or 'repair' works have really become an obsession for city administration, for whatever reason - clean or not so much. In my neighborhood we have 2nd e.g. curb stone replacement in 2 years, i guess. Possibly it is just a warranty replacement - when initially placed stones decay too fast (= quality is too low), contractor is made to replace them... but it is at least annoying to constantly have construction sounds everywhere, road blocks, some dirt etc..

В нашем городе тоже существует такая история с перекладыванием плитки или асфальта, которые в этом не нуждаются, и это жутко бесит. И вы имеете право высказать об этом мнение как житель города
As a person who lived in Moscow my entire life I hate never ending unnececcary construction. It is a waste of resources, it introduces sound pollution, blocked roads, requires shady construction workers, etc.
It’s funny to complain about construction, tell that to those villages where nothing is being built.

Как человек проживший далеко не всю жизнь в Москве, скажу, что кроме Москвы вам следует побывать в других городах нашей страны. Тогда может начнете ценить то, что в городе постоянно что-то строят и ремонтируют. начать советую с Махачкалы 😅
Great video Wyatt. It was interesting to hear your story. The curb stones are the worst in the winter as the snow gets in between the gaps and they rise up all over the place. Bring back the tarmac everywhere I say.

Nice walk & talk! Thanks! Hello from Moscow. I agree that it’s completely unnecessary changing the pavement and all such things around the city every year. Not only it’s unsustainable but it also annoys us to no end, those of us who live in the city. I wish they stopped doing this. I wish they preserved as much of the old historic center of Moscow with its pre-Soviet as well as Soviet architecture as possible. I don’t appreciate those modern buildings and urban areas because they seem soulless to me. Its rich history is what makes Moscow -the Moscow we love! We need to preserve it as much as possible. I’m a new subscriber btw! ❤

Hi Wyatt. I love Moscow too and Pitr. I visited during Soviet times and Moscow was somewhat rundown, dirty cars, and lackluster advertising and nothing to buy in the shops. I’ve always wanted to return and from the many on this forum see it’s much different today. I like the wide Prospekt’s and sidewalks and numerous green spaces in a huge, press out city with much to see. I’d like to return but am concerned about geopolitical situation. Much of Moscow and St. Petersburg are shiny showcases compared to American cities now.

It's the territory of Moscow State University. They have a fairly large forested area, about two kilometers in the perimeter under the trees

You are soooo right, man. Everyone’s annoyed (to say the least) by the annual curbs and asphalt removals. Seems like they make them from poor quality materials on purpose to be able to do such high budget changes every year. Of course, there’s a way to do it properly and make everything look good for many years. But the city government has chosen a different path.
Anyways, the city does look wonderful nowadays.

Where I live in Louisiana we still have old style building like those of the University not near as big but some Catholic churches a couple of old 3 story mansions. We definitely are the biggest small city in Louisiana
I've only been through Louisiana briefly, so I haven't seen much, but I do remember the architecture being memorable

I think if curb stones are your biggest concern with the place you choose to reside, then you are in quite good shape.
Don't you know who is the Mayor of Moscow? The one who has it's own factory which produces curb stones, paving stones etc. So they rebuild all the Moscow, year by year only with one reason - to get money from the city budget

As an American I absolutely HAVE to ask you about the baseball park on the southside of Moscow State University. I believe that is the only Soviet Ballpark in existence and a unique piece of history. How's it doing and what state is it in? I would love an update on that.
I'm Russian. While i don't deny that some of the construction is redundant and is probably connected to corruption, in terms of your particular sidewalk, it is my impression that the old curbstones were pulled out to be releveled and then the sidewalk will be repaved. So, to me it looks like the idea was to actually save the curbstones, because they're still in decent shape.
That might be the case, I'll keep my fingers crossed, but they already had a pile of new curbstones further down the road...
When Sobyanin became the mayor of Moscow, one of his first initiatives was replacing asphalt sidewalks with pavers. People joked that his wife, who presumably owns a paver-producing company, must be the reason for that. I'm not sure if that's actually true, but rebuilding sidewalk cover almost every year definitely doesn't make much sense. Asphalt sidewalks are also significantly more convenient for prams.
Not true in all, this jokes come from previous mayor and his wife. Sobyanin was divorced since 2014 and his wife was never related with that business in all.

I might have the ultimate answer. First, I been all over the world, I can say Moscow is indeed one of the greatest cities. When they build more business centers like Moscow-City in the south of Moscow, it will complete the modern look. I wish they treated old era buildings better but still. Second, you know that we are in a transition period. I been living here all my life and I can see it getting better and better. But in the 90s and 00s it was not pretty. So the transition to modern Russia is underway. Now the staff replacements are happening in the military sphere. I know few years into the future the government will turn their attention to the urban infrastructure industry. So the problem that exists for now is obviously money laundering. I am sure you guessed it yourself. The mayor, who has achieved a lot btw, has a curbstone and tile factory. You see the logic. This is the echo of the late Soviet Union ladies and gents. Now the same problem is with asphalt roads. They replace them on the circular road like clockwork creating traffic. This is a more shady topic, but the rumor is that this industry in many cities is owned by the Armenian diaspora. And supposedly they found the way to abuse the system. This problem dates way back and they retained their powerful presence in this business. Overall, Moscow is still absolutely beautiful, diverse and safe (for the most part), but let us hope these issues are addressed by the Investigation Committee once the major crisis is over

The reason of all of this annual summer mess in Moscow is mr. Petr Biryukov and his ambitions. He is the Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Government of Moscow for Housing and Communal Services and Landscaping.
He came to mayor Sobyanin's team from the team of former mayor Luzhkov.
It looks like mr. Biryukov has some ties with some of big boses in Kremlin. And probably mayor Sobyanin can't just fire him. Because you can see the inconsistency of his activity with all the rest.
They not just change sidewalks every several years, but they do it so unprofessionally 🤦♂️

What a typical American.. Stop walking on the lawn, that's a first, I am pretty sure its still illegal, and its very rude. Second, you don't understand that due to the weather, the pavement in the sidewalks always has to be updated every few years due to salt and snow eroding it. Third, I am pretty sure locals don't care about your opinion. You don't like it, "luggage, aeroport, and back to Americanstan". You don't see what is going on in the USA. How much wasted money and how long construction of things goes on here. The city government fixed a tiny small local park and play area around here, it took over 4 years, and they didn't even fix the baseball field. So technically, they fixed only half of the park. I have tons of examples, and sidewalks and potholes and holes on the roads that your car's whole wheel can fit in. The city poured a fix in and a few weeks later its back to the same hole reappearing in the same spot again, the hole was there for at least two months before they poured the fix the first time. As a person born in the beautiful Moscow, I think you should be grateful for being allowed to live there as a resident.

Plenty of ridiculous things will land you in hot water with the authorities here, but they haven't gotten around to outlawing that one yet, though if you write a letter to the mayor's office, I'm sure they'd be glad for another brilliant concept for legislation; one can never have enough fines, after all

I love your take on the current political climate in Russia unlike some other youtubers who just reiterate official kremlin narrative/ propaganda. Most of your fellow North American expats, in my humble opinion, are men of a certain age who either have a Russian spouse or came here to find one, and I honestly don't blame them because they can find some beauty here who they'd never be able to even strike a flirty conversation with, let along a romantic relationship. And most of these men have very basic, if any knowledge of the language , history or culture. You, on the other hand, strike me as someone who deeply interested and invested in the local cultural environment and understand the social peculiarities of ordinary Russian people, most likely because you've studied the literature and fluent in the language, while also keeping your fingers on the pulse of current events /affairs .

The scheme is quite simple: Moscow , and to some extend St. Petersburg, is Russia's so called showcase and thus the federal government allocates exorbitant amount of money for it's upkeep and flaunts it as the most comfortable and desired city to live in. Plus the city is enormous and most businesses are registered here all contributing in with their taxes. So corrupt government officials can't walk past this opportunity resulting in making connections with some not-so-honest construction companies. The shady contractors secretly conspire with local government instead of having an honest competition for the construction projects bidding. Then they exceed the cost of a project and split the profit between them. And then they repeat that every year, citing that either due to the local climate or some other strange reason it needs to be re-done. In the perfect world the government would hire a competent honest contractor who would use proper materials and cutting edge technology to do it for years to come, just like they do in Scandinavian countries because the climate is identical.
The funny thing is that most Russians know about it, but can't really do much. This whole field is called "Гос. закупки" and it's synonymous with corruption in Russia.

You are absolutely right, the situation with the curb stone is very old and unresolved. Instead of qualitatively solving this problem for many years, they simply “cut” the government’s money over and over again. This benefits the contractor workers.

Насколько мне известно, снятые бордюры обычно разделяют по состоянию и те, что получше, отправляют в убыточные регионы за даром либо за очень дешево. Там их используют для ремонта райцентров и пр.- звучит не очень, но в мелких поселениях и бюджет мелкий и износ не такой, как в Москве (на порядки ниже плотность населения)
На самом деле. проблема бордюров в Москве немного бесит и меня. Так часто менять бордюры это довольно не рационально ( есть такая шутка по поводу смены бордюров, что они есть летние и есть зимние, как колёса на автомобиле ). Хотя технологии не стоят на месте, и сейчас я в центре вижу совершенно другие бордюры, они шире прежних, у них обработка более эстетичная ( врать не буду, но как мне кажется бордюры со снятой фаской по краям. Выглядит они намного красивее прежних. По факту же я прожил в Москве всю свою жизнь, видел её в разное время, разной. Учитывая что мне уже за 60, понятно, что жил я в советское время. Поэтому могу сравнить тогда и сейчас. На мой взгляд, как бы не ругали Собянина, но именно он подхватил упавшее знамя из рук Лужкова ( который по сути начал перестраивать Москву. Лужкова можно критиковать, но он не мало хорошего сделал для Москвы. А Собянин продолжил делать из Москвы современный город.
Может быть под бордюрами шли коммуникации и их нужно было заметить? Вот и раскопали?🤔 У нас трубы уже не первый год по всей Москве меняют.😊
This is a problem worldwide with materials and products nowadays. They have built in shorter lifespan because they want to sell more products, where as 50 years ago products were made to have the best quality to last as long as possible. The costumers like it better because they last, but modern companies didn’t like it because they want to maximize sale. Apple computers and other companies have been sued over this when they intentionally built in too short lifespan in their products.

Хотя может они их выкопали чтобы приподнять и выровнять так как они просели за много лет и перестали выполнять свою функцию и земля с газонов после дождей стала стекать на дорогу превращаясь в грязь, а потом в пыль. They are very busy in the South of Moscow. The side walk and roads surfaces are not in good shape.
I think the suburbs where never design for the number of cars people own, so they are widdening the side streets and creating more parking once done its really nice.
Dragging loaded trolleys across the potholed side walks and roads is not great.

Давайте не будем лицемерами. Большинство россиян точно так же переезжает в другие страны, чтобы улучшить свою жизнь, а не потому, что они безумно любят выбранную страну. No offense to any foreigners who are watching this video, but your thoughts on foreigners coming to Russia with the primary goal of finding a woman, or women 😉 a video on the dating life and scene culture would likely be very interesting, as you’ve lived close to 20 years in Moscow.
Many of these foreigners especially North Americans and Europeans seem to think their passports alone will make them better than local men. Or their knowledge of the English language, or simply their citizenship (related to passport). I suspect even the influx of African and Latin students and foreigners to Russia has to do with finding women. Thoughts?
Bro there are many more women here than men so we need yall to even out the demographic. In terms of Russian ladies, they like manly guys who got money and who are smarter than them. It is not about the game but it's about what you actually have and know.

And unlike you, most of these men are recent arrivals and likely not speak Russian well. Your thoughts? Some of these Channels have attached the attention of anti Russ trolls and NATO trolls.
In part, yes. A newcomers view, especially people who move here not out of a love and interest for the country, is going to be one of rose-tinted sunglasses. I also wanted to make the channel so my grandparents/parents/relatives/etc could see more of the city and get more information about what I see and what's going on. Lastly, in the hopes that for people who lived here before or visited and are no longer here for whatever reason, that they can have some glimpses as to how it's going

What would your response and advice for people particularly westerners (as they seem to be the audience these RUclipsrs are trying to put the rose tinted glasses on) who would like to live in Russia, for employment opportunities, if they do not have working proficiency of Russian (which I believe will take minimum of 3 years to archive , if not longer) . Not every White man in Russia can teach English.

It’s absolutely outrageous, especially during the war, and sanctions. In 2014 I thought the third because of the sanctions the corruption is going to become less. I mean I thought that because the country is going to have troubles with the economy, that authorities will really try to fight the corruption. But it’s only getting worse each year
I have a dacha outside of Moscow and since our area got included into Moscow they started to replace good roads with good asphalt and put bad roads instead
The same thing that you showed is happening in my neighborhood in Moscow, I also filmed it but I have so much trouble since my personal life that I don’t have time to try to deal with it somehow. And that’s the thing, most people are just so busy with solving their own lives that nobody has time and energy to fight with this

But it’s not only about Moscow, I just don’t like the communist architecture so I have the same criticism for every post soviet city
